Honestly, this shit with Hogwarts Legacy is just like what happened with Chick-fil-A like ten or fifteen years ago. Some of y'all might be too young to remember it, but it went almost exactly like this shit today, only the target was technically gay people (not like we aren't all lumped together when push comes to shove, but gay was the political scapegoat in US politics at the time, as trans people were still on the fringes of social awareness).

It came out that the people who own Chick-fil-A were donating to organizations in other countries that were actively working to get gay people there killed, and were also very monetarily invested in stripping gay people of any legal rights they'd amassed in the US. So a lot of queer folks were asking for allies to boycott Chick-fil-A to show solidarity.

And it turned into a giant fuckin circus for bigots to rally around. There was even a support Chick-fil-A day, I remember it because I was a server at the time and our restaurant was empty most the day - while the line for Chick-fil-A down the road was like a mile long consistently.

But while that was obviously annoying, that wasn't what hit people the hardest. Cuz we expect clowns to wear the shoes, right, it's not shocking.

What disappointed people, or really demoralized a lot of young queers at the time especially, was the allies who would still go there. Because they like the sandwiches or fries or whatever. The people who'd march with them in the parade or be supportive of marriage equality, who would then turn right around and give their money to people who were trying to actively harm their friends.

Because the chicken was good.

I remember a friend of mine being really just absolutely broken up over that, trying to understand some of her friends reasoning and at the time I couldn't give her an answer. I could now, though.

And it's this:

Talk is cheap.

It costs nothing to say things. A person can say whatever the hell they want, any feel good flowery thing, and it doesn't really cost them.

But when they are asked to actually give something up - or put their money where their mouth is and just....can't do it. Well then there isn't much else for them to say, is there? At least nothing that's worth anything.

Some people had to find out the hard way that the choice between a chicken sandwich and funding people who did not believe in their dignity as a human being was, in the eyes of certain allies, apparently really hard. Too hard, in fact.

These allies would march in the colorful parades and go to the bars for drinks, but in the end, you couldn't actually depend on them to inconvenience themselves. They were fair weather allies, and they were there for the party and that's about it . They wanted entertainment, and it didn't matter if that came from having fun gay friends or a tasty sandwich.

This is the same thing, really, or pretty close to it.

These types of people just wanna have fun. Either you, their friend or whatever, are fun or the game is fun, and if you stop being fun by incidentally making them feel a little guilty about where they spend their money , then they might just choose the thing that doesn't make them currently uncomfortable.

And I'm not saying these people who say trans rights online but who also really, really want to play wizard game and already have are horrible people or anything - they're just not very good. They have no real character. And unfortunately there's not much you can do to change that, other than investing time and energy in people who do.

hi sorry I've vanished the tldr; of it all is I'm dealing with homophobic pushback from my family that killed my motivation to do much of anything but !! I have also gotten into two exhibitions and received runner up for a highly respected artist grant this month alone which has been amazing and surreal — I don't usually share my art but here's two pieces framed and ready to head out into the world !!

The first time I was called a slur, I was ten years old.

I mean, it wasn't a slur, but it sounded like one when she said it.

I was ten, and a girl in my fifth grade class asked who I had a crush on.

I said no one, I wasn't interested in boys.

She made a grossed out face and said "oh, so are you a lesbian?"

Lesbian doesn't have to be a slur. But in her voice, it was a weapon.

I was twelve before I could say lesbian out loud, and fourteen before I was comfortable saying it.

All of our words are slurs. That doesn't mean lesbian is a bad word. That doesn't mean no one should say it.

Some people have used queer as a weapon, and that's shitty. But it's not a slur any more than lesbian is. It's a good word that can be used to say bad things.

How things have changed. Daegu is one of Korea's conservative and homophobic strongholds. Last year Daegu Pride was obstructed and subjected to homophobic hate crime. Police did little to help.

1 year later: Daegu police receive education session on Daegu Queer Culture Festival. pic.twitter.com/FVV788RmVL

— Raphael Rashid (@koryodynasty) May 25, 2019
Crazy homophobia in South Korea: Daegu mayor Hong Joon-pyo has ordered the mobilisation of 450 people to *demolish* Daegu Pride that "disgusts people" if planners dare to setup booths tomorrow.

*But* major discord: Daegu police say they will protect pride's "freedom of assembly" https://t.co/AuxOhj4DOH

— Raphael Rashid (@koryodynasty) June 16, 2023
A court has already rejected the Christian right's injunction application to block Daegu Pride. Mayor Hong argues that Daegu Pride's occupation of the road is "illegal" and that citizens' "right to passage" should take precedence, has vowed to demolish the festival.

— Raphael Rashid (@koryodynasty) June 16, 2023
Daegu police, on the other hand, have promised to protect the festival and will assist with car/bus detours. It stated that the festival is in accordance with relevant laws and that freedom of assembly is guaranteed by the constitution. Will ensure no human or material damage.

— Raphael Rashid (@koryodynasty) June 16, 2023
An unprecedented and absurd showdown between intolerance and freedom is unfolding in Daegu right now: 100s of civil servants (yellow) deployed by the homophobic mayor who wants to demolish small pride festival vs. 100s of police ready to protect event's assembly freedom. https://t.co/ZQDhSe71Yd

the police in daegu protesting against the city mayor and removing christian protestors at the pride festival oh wow pic.twitter.com/9szHVLubkj

— 햄냥 ★ (@hwngbun) June 18, 2023

Wow, Daegu (South Korea) went from not protecting Daegu Pride in 2018 the way they should've to receiving education sessions on Queer culture and becoming public allies and vowing to protect Pride from then on and doing exactly so every single year culminating in this year when their hobgoblin of a mayor tried to destroy Pride, and now even protesting in favor of Pride? Growth.

Daegu court: freedom of expression basic human rights. Pride festival will be allowed to go ahead, injunction applications by anti-pride groups denied

Daegu mayor PPP Hong Jun-pyo: Queer festival is unlawful and I’ll hold Daegu police chief accountable

Daegu police: ?
Me: wat https://t.co/b5QQIi4nX9

— Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) June 17, 2023

It's important to note that the courts also supported Pride and the mayor publicly threatened the police chief, yet the police still went to protect and support Pride.

Daegu court: “… Freedom of expression, which ensures the exchange of diverse ideas and opinions, is a fundamental right that forms the basis of democracy. Therefore, limiting such freedom of expression should be exercised with caution."https://t.co/KUZJRaKKwI

South Korean city officials clash with police at protest against LGBTQ festival | CNN
CNN
Scuffles broke out in the South Korean city of Daegu on Saturday as local officials led by the mayor clashed with police during a protest ag

"South Korean news agency Yonhap estimated that about 500 protesters and 1,500 police officers were at the scene. The festival ultimately continued, with the parade taking place as planned."

Embassies are also at Daegu Pride at the moment. While their presence at pride events is sometime the subject of scrutiny by LGBTQ activists themselves, it's more than just distributing stickers. Their role has transformed into one of protection and shielding from hate violence. pic.twitter.com/etgrgZuZyE

— Raphael Rashid (@koryodynasty) June 17, 2023
Following the hideous homophobic violence in Incheon in 2018, like-minded embassies made an informal agreement to attend all the major pride events in Korea when possible. By being there, police have an even greater duty to protect the pride event. https://t.co/eKtjwoS5ls

I'm wishing a very Happy Pride Month to all the queer people who:

are disabled

are chronically ill

can't celebrate for health reasons

disability gets in the way of their gender representation

disability got in the way of a relationship

don't have anyone to celebrate with

have homophobic caretakers

Happy Pride Month to all disabled queer people

a rant by me

me and my tired self is just here to say: kids aren’t inherently transphobic or homophobic.

while there are exceptions **cough parenting cough** most children won’t look at a trans and/or gay person and think “evil ew evil get away from me”

when I was younger, my parents didn’t even tell me about the existence of non-hetero, non-cis people. one day, I was watching TV and saw a girl who had a crush on another girl; I didn’t even find it remarkable. I just said to myself “hmm I though the crush was gonna be a boy, but ok. you do you” and kept watching.

I listened to Taylor Swift’s You Need To Calm Down the day it came out and completely agreed that you can’t just wish a minority away until they disappear, even though my parents curse out and mock and wish death upon LGBT+ people in my home to this day,

but I disagree with them.

with information and a chance outside of an homo/trans/[insert-here]phobe’s manipulation, a kid will see a toxic mindset vs. a community that cheers everyone — especially LGBT+ people and other minorities — on. I saw the difference, and to this day, I know I chose the right one.

Roman’s first love was Circe, one of the most popular face models working for Janus Cosmetics back when his parents were still alive. Upon learning of Roman’s romantic interest in the woman, Charles and Victoria Sionis explicitly forbade the relationship on the grounds that Circe was ‘only’ working class instead of belonging to one of the wealthy, upper class families of Gotham they hoped their child would marry into someday. Not only that, but any relationship with her was out of the question because of how ‘scandalous’ it would be if word got out that Roman was involved in a same sex relationship. Furious at being denied the love of his life, Roman began plotting the death of his parents so that once they were out of the picture, he could be with her forever. When the lawsuits began piling up and Janus Cosmetics started going downhill, Circe was quick to abandon his side. Spurned, Roman sought revenge by placing a mask laced with the hazardous chemicals he’d invested in on her face, destroying the natural beauty he’d fallen in love with.

Ok so I’m watching finally free for the bajillionth time and this has probably been said but I had a thought: what if Luke wrote Finally Free to help show his support for Alex after he came out to his parents. Ignoring all of the other boys possible sexualities, let’s see what we know.

Long post btw.

1. We know that Luke wrote it before he died because it was in his journal.

2. We know that Alex came out to his parents and it didn’t go well. With his anxiety on top of the stress of coming out and being met with rejection, this would have been a really hard time for him.

3. Luke connects with people and conveys emotion through music and that music has connected the boys from the very beginning.

4. The boys support Alex and his sexuality very much!

Going almost line by line:

“Hearts on fire /We're no liars/So we say what we wanna say/I'm awakened/No more faking/So we push all our fears away”

This is like how Alex couldn’t hide who he was from his parents any longer and told them, even though it must have made his anxiety go through the roof. Also “I’m awakened” refers to a sexual awakening and Alex realizing that he was gay. He couldn’t lie to his parents, so he faced his fears and told them. Luke is congratulating him, even though it didn’t turn out well.

“And you're a part of me/Hands up if you're with me/Now 'til eternity/Hands up if you believe/Been so long, and now we're finally free”

This part is Luke talking to Alex saying that even though things aren’t great, it’s ok. You have us and we’re gonna be with you no matter what. Screw your parents. You’re finally free of them. This is also the vibe I get from Luke in the scene before This Band is Back where they’re talking about what happened to Bobby and their families.

“We're all bright now/What a sight now/Coming out like we're fireworks/Marching on proud/Turn it up loud/'Cause now we know what we're worth”

This one is a bit more self explanatory. It literally says coming out like we’re fireworks, which are very colorful and rainbowy. Next it says marching on proud as a reference to pride. “Turn it up loud” because Alex refuses to hide anymore. Finally “cause now we know what we’re worth” says “Hey Alex. You’re awesome and even if your parents don’t see that, you are and you’re worth so much more than they know.”
