DISCLAIMER: this is my original work that i have chosen to share on this platform. plagiarism in any form will NOT be tolerated.

Okay hi everyone new WIP!! Yay camp!! This is one of three short stories I’m hoping to complete in April, and is a part of my untitled short story collection including Death Wears Daisy-Chains and The Ribs of Saint Anthony.

WHO: Augustina, Freddie, Aunt Mags

WHAT: A teenage girl and her cousin reflect on their very different relationships with their grandmother after her funeral. It gets very dramatic & very traumatic.

WHERE: Their deceased grandmother’s house

WHEN: mid-century America, like 1940s to 1960s ish.

POV: probably third person limited we’ll find out when we get there

STATUS: planning/outlining

WORD COUNT GOAL: 3,000

THEMES: difficult family relationships, suppressed trauma, art appreciation, jealousy,

AESTHETIC: old mansions with marble staircases, the renaissance section of an art museum, rainy days, wearing fancy dresses with stockings and no shoes, playing a grand piano, elaborate frames, candelabras, taking walks when you can’t sleep

Let’s break down these characters!

AUGUSTINA

-19

-raised by her grandmother, aka Auntie Mags

-suppresses everything and keeps it all to herself

-refuses to see the bad in people

-impeccable fashion sense

FREDDIE

-21

-also raised by Auntie Mags, in part

-keeps absolutely nothing to himself

-he gets mad about things a lot but only cause he cares and he hates things that aren’t fair

-really likes art history

AUNTIE MAGS

-dead

-totally sucks

-i hate her and so does freddie

-augustina’s indifferent though (that is, indeed, the main source of conflict)

WHEE i’m really excited to write this Augustina and Freddie have a great dynamic and the aesthetic of the house and setting is absolutely beautiful. The Ribs of Saint Anthony did a LOT in helping me with descriptive imagery, but I so prefer writing nature imagery. This story is entirely set on one staircase so that'll be a challenge and I’m very excited.

Intros for the other two stories coming later this month!

send me an ask to be added to my taglist!

I love learning about everyone's characters and all the inspiration that went into making them! I normally don't go for historical fiction but this sounds amazing and genuinely well-researched. :D

Writers Challenge#4

Author Interview:

Hi guys.

It's me again and I guess I have another challenge this time and this is too all writers who haven't found their title, even if you have a title you can join.

OC inspirations.

And book inspirations.

How did your book grow into it now?

Was a fanfic to original story?

Vibes?

Optional.

What inspired you to write your WIP? It could be a book, a show, a person or even a character.

My current WIP is based on a Wolfblood, Twilight and Avatar:The Last Airbender.

Wolfblood gave me the way to write controlled werewolves, Twilight gave me my protagonist, Thalia but she was a nameless Black girl who had a relationship with a vampire and Avatar for my panther shifters but slowly the book changed, and the Avatar gave me inspo for her abilities and she was a mortal who lived with supernatural creatures.

So yeah.

Thats it.

The vibe is a snowy winter wonderland filled with secrets and monsters and strange happenings after a strange human girl meets a tribe of Inuit werewolves.

The tone is quite dark at first.

Excerpt From My WIP

Feel free to critique my writing :D

Have you ever seen someone's vulnerable interiority? Those few moments far in between where a human decanter has been abused and left to pour their despair at your feet. As if you were a God? As if they were praying with their cries as hymns?

I always feared those moments. I feared many interesting things growing up.

I feared the day when mom would die. How I would be the only person who could be at the funeral.

I feared the day when someone would confess their love for me. How the light in their eyes would be twirling like flames with hope, or maybe shaking with fear?

I feared the moment when I could see someone in their purest moment. How I would be left with the choice of saying "I see you" or letting the moment fall past.

I feared those moments not because I was scared of grief, or scared of romance, or scared of another person.

In reality, I was scared of myself. Or my lack of self to be more apt. Confused? Don't worry. I'll explain myself.

To say that I "lack" emotions would be inaccurate. I can feel annoyance whenever a distraction interfers with my necessities. I occassionally have pangs of joy. I have felt grief. Joy. Love

unfortunately.

My emotions aren't strong.

When I was confessed to by a school companion in my youth with a two dollar flower and a million dollar smile, I felt an underlining of annoyance at this lackluster gesture. I quitely rejected them. I still made sure to grab the poor flower and put them in a vase as my mom always told me I should. Although, I never thought about them since that moment.

When a radiant sunshine revealed a tiny little hint of deeper awareness beneath their conspicuous joyfulness, I ignored it. That was the only time I had ever seen a pained smile of their face. There were some tears lighting up their eyes. I would never have that moment again. I ruined it.

The moment that sealed my fate was when my mother died after forcing her way through torturous chemo treatments and her own deterioration. At the bedside of own of the most loving angels that could ever grace this world, I couldn't even wring enough emotion out of me to cry authentically. I felt genuine sadness for her passing and joy for her rewarded sufferance, that was true. But it didn't feel like enough. This was the woman who raised me and I didn't even have the heart to be sad for the rest of my life.

At that moment, my greatest fears had come true, I was a grotesque monster who couldn't even bring myself to cry genuinely at my own mother's funeral. I spent more time in my childhood cottage thinking about my father more than my mother.

My father always called me a "nothing child" when I was younger. I still remember the exact words my mother said to me after she chased my father out of the house for the last time, "you aren't useless".

Maybe that was what my father meant when he called me a "nothing child" Maybe he really was trying to call me useless. But when my angelic mother died, when my companion was lost in romance, and when I lost the opportunity to discover humanity underneath my friend's exterior, I truly was a nothing child.

When Sylvia Plath said:

“I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life. And I am horribly limited.”

I felt that.
