The Joker and Plastic Man have the exact same origin story but you don't see Plastic Man blowing up orphanages over it

This page, from Terrifics 11, always breaks my heart, not going to lie. It really contexualizes Plas’ character into a man who is so committed to being one thing, a hero, that he doesn’t (or maybe can’t) let himself be anything else, like a father and husband.

To me, that gels a whole ton more with his characterization from way back in the Golden Age. Then, you NEVER saw Eel even referenced after issue 26*. He got depressed at the thought of being unable to be a hero. And not because he was a gloryhound, but because it’s just who he is

He lived and breathed being Plastic Man, he never was (or maybe let himself be) anything or anyone else. No romance, no raising a family, just being Plastic Man. His home was even addressed in name of Plastic Man!

So seeing Plas that actually had a family, actually let himself fall in love with someone, raise a son, and then having it all fall apart because he can’t let go of being a hero… it’s sad. But good stuff.

But really, it’s all how I see it, and how I feel about it. It’s probably not what anyone else thinks of it, haha.

* The last story Eel was used as an alternate identity for Plastic Man was issue 14, and was last SEEN in issue 19 (in what I feel is a very character defining moment)

Imagine you’re a Gotham mook out for your daily mugging and you’re holding up some punk kid but the idiot won’t stop laughing and it’s freaking you out because kid, what’s wrong wit ya, I’ve got a gun here

And he’s still laughing and he goes “man, are you unlucky today” and you’re like “what” and he goes “my dad’s in town” and nods at something behind you

And you turn, your heart dropping because oh Christ did you just mug one of the bats but then you see a giant red leotard and you’re full of relief because oh it’s just that rubber comedian guy from the Justice League

But then you see his face

And more importantly, the expression on it

And you’re suddenly struck with the realization that you have just pissed off an immortal, invincible lunatic with fists the size of skyscrapers who will not hesitate to beat you into a pretzel and you’re about to become a casualty of Gotham’s natural selection process while learning why the first rule of being a crook in Gotham has nothing to do with the Bat or that goddamn clown, but rather is if you value the integrity of your bones do not FUCKING touch Plastic Man’s Goddamn SON

I also find it really smart that in the comics they show him being arrested and he has like a funny little belt box (look guys I'm a theater kid™) muzzle thing ⬇️

bc that makes so much sense and it's like the only time we've ever actually seen how they prevent him from using his powers after he's been apprehended, because in his debut episode NOTHING HAPPENS. We never see it 💀 he just got away ig. I also did not look at reference while drawing the face thing and you can tell lmao

Quick headcanon that at some point, the Justice League makes a time-off calendar for every time a leaguer is busy and needs someone to keep their city safe while they’re gone. Maybe they have a work trip or a family thing or even some vacation they planned.

All a hero has to do is request time off, and another member will sub in while they’re gone. The only problem is that it creates a pattern. It would be suspicious if Green Arrow is only replaced when Oliver Queen is on a business trip, right? So to keep the public on their toes, JL members are encouraged to take a random day off each month or so and switch out with no rhyme or reason. Just any random day, any random hour.

The outcome is complete chaos.

Clark Kent has the pleasure of interviewing Wonder Woman at the scene of a car chase she just stopped in Metropolis.

Some muggers in Star City are scooped up into a giant glowing cage while Green Lantern riddles off bird puns to an exasperated Black Canary.

A team of robbers hit a bank in Central City but get roasted by Plastic Man for their poor their safe-cracking skills as they’re taken into custody.

Black Manta uses his high tech weaponry to wreak havoc in the Atlantic only to be hit with a torpedo as the Bat-Sub dives towards him at full speed.

Cyborg is lecturing a group of teen vandals in Fawcett City when Captain Marvel just waltzes up, says, “I’m tapping back in,” and continues the lecture where he left off.

Complete. And. Utter. Chaos. No one knows who will show up at the scene now, not even the cops, but criminals are scared shitless.

The JL decides to keep the calendar. If only for entertainment.

The Justice League had been a pain in Dannys side the last few weeks. They insisted that Danny needed a mentor, someone who could help him right in his ever growing list of abilities and whatnot. Danny snuck into one of the JL meetings in the watchtower to find out the real reason and discovered they saw him as a massive powerhouse that needed to be brought into thier side so his power "doesn't fall into the wrong hands". Ick.

Phantom was also pretty sure this had something to do with the bat be it contingency plans or adoption papers that guy is never too far from the top of Dannys list of "people I want to punt into the abyss for the weekend"

Its not that Danny doesn't want the help, he just knows how the League would eventually view him. He is of Lazarus. He is part monster. He has been ever since he died. Danny no longer thinks like a human does, he's "too violent" "obsessive" and "impulsive" by League standards.

Unfortunately, Danny is wired like that. His people are a part of the Infinite Realms immune system and play a key role in its overall ecosystem. There are legitimate biological reasons hes like this, ones that keep him from fading. The League doesn't seem to understand and he can't explain it in further detail without revealing his own weakness and the weaknesses of others like him.

So he just keeps refusing thier help...until he finds someone who the League also don't "agree" with which was strange since he was on thier team.

Plasticman was an ex criminal who has temptations towards money and has a hard time resisting. The stretchy guy also could turn his body into any shape and stretch any length he wanted and had no regard for the human form. Danny was in awe but the moment he heard the guy make a funny joke he made a decision.

If he had to choose a mentor from the JL roster than he picked this guy.

He announced his decision at the next JL meeting sending the place into an uproar.

Alternatively: Danny gives no warning and Plastic man just gets surprised when this glowy kid and his green puppy appear in front of him smiling happily and introduced himself as his new sidekick.
