Idea for a Soldier Poet King AMV

This AMV will use Super Mario Logan charectrers

Soldier is Joseph, though it's more in the sense that he soldier on through life as it did deal him a unfortunate hand.

The poet is Cody, I would refer to him as a poet More into how he can be able to dismantle and and analyze others actions through words.

The king/ruler would be Bowser Junior ( I'm accounting for the originals, not the puppets), not only is he technically a prince (a form of royalty and a ruler, so for the sake of the video and the song he is refers to as a ruler) due to being the son of the king Bowser, he does seem to posses some qualities of royalty (for better or worse).

This is just an idea I had, If you use it credit me, and please, if you do not like it, you can be polite and disagree politely.

Torches-The Oh Hellos

My personal analysis of this song and how I interpret this song based on my knowledge and experience as an ex-Christian and Songwriter. Thanks @greatcelestialhieroglyphs for the idea to do this add this to the Masterlist or reboot if u want.

Trigger Warning for Religious intolerance, racism, Pedo mention, & general fear/hate mongering. This is a very eye opening song when looking at the lyrics and I’m glad a Christian band is willing to show the ugly side and it’s negative effects.

Lyrics in full: (my analysis in this color)

I got a venom like a snake running out of my mouth (Running out of my mouth, running out of my mouth) These first words show hateful words spewing unfiltered. I see this as hateful rhetoric.

It's got you burning at the stake. Innocent or not, you're not a bet I care to take A recall to the witch trials a time were paranoia and fear born out of the horrible lie spread by a man who hated a particular women. Taking the lives of thousands. The Oh Hellos are Christian and are against such hateful words when their religion is one of healing and forgiveness.

And Father Ignorance will make brothers of us all (Brothers of us all, brothers of us all) Again ignorance to fact leading to such a mob mentality.

As he sets our torch aflame. Witch-hunt and the modern day incident of white nationalists marching with Tiki torches in Charlottesville, Va.

Chasing down the flimsy specters that we co-create Making of a strawman enemy.

Over and over, again We keep that old wheel turning We spin it around This is a trend in history and now.

I got a terror I can't shake pushing down on my lungs (Pushing down on my lungs, pushing down on my lungs) Either an act of terror through verbal abuse or a feeling of terror that causes one to act aggressively and irrationally.

It's got me lying there awake with a hand On a gun while turning shadows into shapes Making a crowd restless and willing to commit grave acts of violence.

Mother Fortuna, O, she makes sisters of us all (Sisters of us all, sisters of us all) I don’t know

When the faces in her wake Look more like our own than the effigies we immolate I see this as the monsters become among the people than the others that are demonized. An example are Pedos often being youth pastors when drag queens are demonized as such.

Over and over, again We keep that old wheel turning Over and over, again We lay the next spoke down Over and over, again (oceans will roll in) Over and over, again We spin it around How the cycle continues

How this song weaves and hides the message of your not looking carefully enough:

Basically, this song is very beautiful and has a lot of call and repeat with Maggie calling and the rest repeating. Even I didn’t understand the lyrics cuz I was caught in the beauty of the song. I don’t know if it was intentional or not but it shows how such nasty elements can be hidden, either by ignorance (not a bad thing as long as your willing to learn) or getting caught up in what one believes in. Like getting caught up in the beauty of the song.

Once you realize what this song is trying to say, it brings a new perspective. I’m not christan but I love The Oh Hellos and how they are willing to face the monsters in one’s own group. I know my community aren’t made of saints but for others it’s harder. Passerine is also another song with similar themes.

omg soldier, poet, king is NOT a Christian worship song

folks on tiktok being like YALL DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS ABOUT JESUS??? and "better take it off my dnd playlist now!!!"

it's not about jesus holy fuck, i mean, it is, but it isn't.

Dear Wormwood is a concept album that uses biblical symbolism to talk about an abusive relationship. The Oh Hellos have a whole ass THING about retelling stories (biblical, mythological etc) to use to deal with your own story which is like...a whole thing in storytelling anyway (the new testament is a monomyth yall, Hero's Journey 1.0, in that regard everything is biblical)

Dear Wormwood is put in the context of someone writing letters (inspired by The Screwtape Letters, CS Lewis) to their abuser. "Soldier, Poet, King" is from the perspective of the protagonist, on the receiving end of the abuse, who (after the song "Exeunt") is escaping from the abuse and attempting to continue their life outside of it. The person who is the soldier, poet, king, is the protagonist. "your city" is the abusive relationship. "Wormwood" is the devil of this person's life.

If you look on Genius, yeah the story is about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In context? It's about the Second Coming of the protagonist. The rebirth they get after escaping.

The ending song of the album, "Thus Always to Tyrants", the last line of the album is

Where I go, will you still follow? Will you leave your shaded hollow? Will you greet the daylight looming? Learn to love without consuming?

The protagonist is attempting to mentally escape from the abuse, worried about carrying the trauma into the next relationship.

Soldier Poet King is not about Jesus. It's about fighting. It's about escaping the cycle of abuse. It's about the power that resides in stories, about people who have experienced this before and succeeded. It's about using those stories and learning from them.

Keep the shit on your dnd playlist, it's sort of the whole point.

Bitter Water Analysis:

So essentially I got board and obsessed with Dear Wormwood once again and I decided to analyze it lyric by lyric. I know plenty of people do this I just thought it would be neat to really tie everything together, and especially to pinpoint the crazy amount of biblical references. This is the first time I've done something like this and it was super fun!

Lyric by lyric:

Oh-oh-oh

Oh-oh-oh

Oh fair and flighty love

My aerolite above

The only dove I see

This is our introduction to the lover, they are described as an aerolite- which is a meteorite, and a dove- which is a Biblical symbol of peace and innocence.

Could you love me more

If by the sun and moon I swore

That I would never flee?

The narrator promises not to leave the relationship.

The imagery of the sun and moon, paired with the earlier aerolite and dove, paints the lover as something heavenly.

Well, I still taste you on my lips

Lovely bitter water

This is where it gets really interesting.

The ordeal of the bitter water was a Jewish tradition described in both the Bible and the Talmud. It was trial by ordeal administered a wife whose husband suspected her of adultery but who had no witnesses to make a formal case.

In the book of Numbers in the Old Testament of the Bible, God gives a series of instructions to Moses regarding his priests. If a woman were accused of adultery, she drank bitter water. If she had been unfaithful, it was said the bitter water would enact a curse upon her that would cause her body to swell. The nature of the curse, which is better described by the Talmud, is debated upon. It ranges from damage to her reproductive organs, to a curse of miscarriage, to immediate death.

And the priest shall write these curses in a scroll, and he shall blot them out into the water of bitterness. 24 And he shall make the woman drink the water of bitterness that causeth the curse; and the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her and become bitter.

-Numbers 5 JPS 1917

With this in mind, we can conclude that the narrator is being unfaithful by pursuing this relationship. The question is to whom?

The terrible fire of old regret is honey on my tongue

This is the first time the lover is linked to fire (but not the last.)

The biblical source of Revelation (a book we’ll be seeing a lot more of) contains this verse:

Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.

“It” is a scroll that God gave to John, instructing him to prophecy about the end of times. What is important is the metaphor of something being momentarily sweet yet ultimately harmful.

And I know I shouldn't love you

I know I shouldn't love you

But I do

The narrator knows the relationship is toxic on some level, yet is still infatuated by their lover

I feel it in my soul

I feel the empty hole

The cup that can't be filled

The idea that everyone has an inherent “emptiness” is prominent in Christian theology. This emptiness is caused by the sinful narrater of humanity and their need for God to meet their needs.

But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

Jonh 4:14 ESV

Despite the narrator’s passioned relationship, their lover is ultimately incapable of sustaining them.

I feel it in my blood

In the fire and the flood

The beast that can't be killed

The “beast” is their sinful nature.

Even now you mark my steps

Lovely bitter water

Oh, the days of our delights are poison in my veins

I know I shouldn't love you

I know

It may be a stretch, but while researching I came across this:

They gather together, They hide, they mark my steps, When they lie in wait for my life.

Psalm 56:6 NKJV

In this verse, “they” refers to the singer (David)’s enemies. He is asking God to deliver him from them. This is just interesting.

Days of delight turning to poison is reminiscent of honey on the tongue turning sour.

I am not a fool entire

No, I know what is coming

You'll bury me beneath the trees I climbed

When I was a child

I know I shouldn't love you

Well, I know I shouldn't love you

But I do

The narrator acknowledges that the relationship will turn fatal, yet still pursues it.

“You’ll bury me beneath the trees I climbed when I was a child” brings two songs to mind.

The first is the traditional folk song Bury Me Beneath the Willow. The song's lyrics relate that the singer's lover has left her. She asks that she be buried beneath the willow tree, in the hopes that her lover will still think of her. In the version of the lyrics, these are the ones that stuck out to me-

She told me that she dearly loved me

How could I believe it untrue?

Until an angel softly whispered

She could never care for you

The second is another Oh Hellos song from their first EP, Trees. Climbing trees is exhibited as an act of youth, as children are bold and unafraid of falling.

Climbing trees;

Haven't much since we were children

Shaking limbs

Tend to end up bent and broken

Conclusion:

Bitter Water introduces the lover and describes their toxic relationship with the narrator. This is the main conflict of the story so it’s pretty important. That’s it. That’s all I got.
