Second Chances

Aaron and Katelyn don’t initially plan on having kids. They’re both extremely busy and honestly, the thought kind of terrifies Aaron. What if he ends up like Tilda? What if he’s too angry, too apathetic, too much? Not enough?

But a few years into their practice, Katelyn starts talking about it more. Not pushing, just envisioning.

Aaron hates telling Katelyn no and she doesn’t ask because she knows he’ll say yes. For her, he would say yes.

But he knows she’s craving that experience; motherhood. And Katelyn? Katelyn would be a great mom. She’s unendingly patient, resoundingly kind. She loves people who don’t even deserve to be loved. She loves Aaron.

Aaron is a coward though. He won’t be a good father. He doesn’t even know where to begin.

Then one day, it happens. He’s working at the ER and a woman brings two little girls in.

Aaron can tell immediately that they’re twins, about four years old or so, but small for their age. They both have dirty faces and one’s is tear-streaked, though she isn’t crying now. She’s holding her arm delicately to her body, her eyes trained on some distant spot.

She fell, climbing from a tree, the woman says. She’s their Foster mother, she tells him. The girls are so clumsy and they never mind.

Their names are Kallie and Kacie. Kallie has the broken arm and Kacie doesn’t leave her side. She hovers nervously over her sister and screams and cries when they take Kallie back for X-rays. The foster mother leans down and hisses something in Kacie’s ear and Aaron feels a sick twist in his gut. He let’s Kacie come back into the room with the tech so she can watch her sister a safe distance from the radiation.

They cast Kallie’s arm. CPS has already been called, it’s protocol for injured foster children. But Aaron is watching closely, that sick feeling lingering.

He gets paged and goes to leave, but as he’s closing the door, he catches sight of the foster mother grabbing Kallie’s arm and jerking her close to her, whispering harshly into her ear.

The fear, the pain, is so clear on the little girl’s face.

Aaron’s whole body tenses with fury, fury like he has only experienced once before.

Fury that brings to mind a bloody bedroom and the slick feel of a racquet beneath his fingers.

He steps back into the room. It’s all he can do to swallow his fury, to make his voice something human. “You’re needed at the front desk,” he tells her, so coldly the room chills by degrees.

She looks nervous, but she complies, with one last look at the girls.

“A nurse will watch you, okay?” He tells the girls, making his voice as gentle as possible.

He turns to call for a nurse, but feels a little tug at his coat. He looks down at Kacie’s upturned face, her wide blue eyes, the dirt on her cheeks.

“Please don’t let her hurt my sister anymore,” she says in a whisper. A tiny plea that fractures Aaron’s heart in places he thought were long untouchable. “I’ll be good. I’ll be a good girl. Please, don’t let them hurt her anymore.”

CPS takes the girls away, but not before Aaron gets every scrap of information on them that he can. Not before Aaron takes Kacie’s little face between his hands and tells her his name, gives her a card with his number. “You call me, any time, if you ever need anything. I won’t let anyone hurt you or your sister again.”

He calls Katelyn on his way home. He tells her what happened today. He can’t help the tears that come when he reveals how helpless he felt for those girls who needed him. For a little girl begging for her sister. For another sibling, sitting in a courtroom, telling the jury what he had done for his own brother.

Katelyn starts the process to be fosters that night. They call and they make inquiries. They use every connection they have. Wymack, Kevin Day, doctors they knew from their residencies.

Three months later, Kacie and Kallie come home. There are fresh bruises on their skin, apprehension in their eyes. Katelyn cries quietly, but doesn’t let the girls see. They have made the spare room into a little girl’s kingdom. My Little Pony threw up rainbows on the walls. Princess bedspreads and lavender rugs and race cars in the corner, just in case.

Kallie and Kacie smile, for the first time Aaron has ever seen. They are resplendent and wonderful and Aaron would paint the whole world pink and lavender if it made them smile like that.

After the girls go to bed that night, Aaron makes a call.

It’s obvious he woke him up. Sleep makes his voice gruff, his speech slurred.

Aaron doesn’t wait for him to speak, “You’re an uncle.”

There is a pause. “Okay,” Andrew says.

“It’s not official, but it’s going to be,” Aaron says, cradling the phone in his hands. “It’s two little girls; identical twins. Katelyn and I, we’re adopting.”

“Okay,” Andrew says again.

“Something… Things have happened to them, Andrew,” Aaron says quietly. “I don’t know the extent. Kallie has a cast and Kacie jumps whenever a door slams. I don’t know how I’m going to do this, but I am.”

Andrew says nothing, so Aaron presses on.

“They shouldn’t have to wait for college for their second chance. We shouldn’t have had to wait for ours.”

Aaron hears a door open and close, the soft inhale that means his brother is outside, taking a slow drag off a cigarette.

“Do you want me to come down?” The question is blunt, just like everything else about Andrew. Blunt as a brick to the head.

Aaron closes his eyes and leans against the wall. He hears Katelyn singing softly to the girls in their room, singing away nightmares.

No one ever sang Aaron to sleep. Aaron knows no one sang to Andrew, either.

He’s tired, down to his bones, to his worn-out soul. Perhaps it’s exhaustion, or perhaps some other, rawer, emotion, that makes his voice thick when he says, “Yeah.”

There’s a click. Andrew has hung up, no salutations, no lingering presence, just the static of a dropped call.

Aaron is not at all surprised when twelve hours later, his brother shows up at his door.

Andrew’s face doesn’t change when the girls stumble out, Kallie’s arm still wrapped in a blue cast covered in her sister’s crayon doodles, but he looks over the top of their heads at Aaron and for once, Aaron understands what people mean when they say “it’s a twin thing”.

He can read worlds in his brother’s eyes. For once, he’s not left guessing what his twin is thinking.

“Girls, this is your Uncle Andrew.”

Imagine everything is the same but Allison is either Aphrodite in disguise (why? And why would she come to earth to end up with the foxes of all people? Playing exy???) ( Listen I never said this would make sense just let me explain) or she is a descendant of Aphrodite in some way and therefore she can feel when people are in love. SO I'm just picturing Allison being constantly hit by the unbelievable strength of Andreil's feelings for one another. I don't know you guys this made sense last night , just the idea of Allison loving love but at some point she starts to struggle because Andrew and Neil really can't get a grip, they are so gone for each other that if Allison is in the same room as them she can't really concentrate on anything and it's getting annoying. Also she's pissed because those two little fuckers manage to look completely normal and unaffected while she's fighting for her life trying to concentrate on anything but them.

now I'm thinking about Aaron getting cursed ( maybe by Allison??) for one reason or another to feel his brother feelings for one day and everything is going good and Andrew is being chill and unaffected until NEIL shows up and Aaron feels like his heart is actively trying to get out of his ribcage to be with him

Andrew Minyard passively saw his long lost brother watch a medical tv show and say 'I want to do that' while his abusive mum laughed and dismissed him and he said to himself I will get you into med school. You will do that. AND HE DID.

You can pry this from my cold dead hands but I have a head cannon that when they’re back at the dorms both Andrew and Kevin take ice cold showers. Because Nicky would insist on showering first and make his shower really hot and Aaron would go second and use the rest of the hot water. Andrew would complain about the shower always being cold but never take the initiative to shower first because he’s used to it and Kevin would go on about how it’s good for his muscles but secretly hate it. Idk how Neil would fit in there when he moves in but I feel like that boy probably just takes cold showers for fun

To me, it's fascinating how hell-bent Andrew is about protecting his people; people he didn't even know about for half his life. He gave up Cass - the one good thing he thought he could have - in a second when he found out about Aaron. He moved in with Nicky; a strange, older man who he had never met before, because Nicky could give a home to his brother (tbh I don't think Andrew even thought about himself in that scenario). He took in Kevin, and later on, Neil. And all that for what? For someone to keep near, someone to see him as useful, as important. Someone to give him purpose.

Oh right, this was supposed to be a question. Thoughts?

Oooooo honestly that’s a really great question! My memory of the exact timeline might be a bit all over the place so I could be wrong or misremembering, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it had something to do with Andrew immediately suspecting that their bio mom (Tilda I think her name was?) was abusing Aaron.

I think there’s a possibility that Andrew was able to see parts of himself in Aaron, no matter how much he might deny it.

I think that, for the first time, Andrew met someone who was at least somewhat familiar with the pain he himself had endured and decided that keeping Aaron safe above all else, was more important than his possible future with Cass. The fact that they were brothers probably added to that sentiment, but Andrew would’ve probably made the same decision even if they weren’t.

And from there Andrew attempted to carve out a home for himself surrounded by the people he chose to let in.

Maybe during that time he started to understand that he could have some semblance of a family without Cass, without having to endure what he did in order to keep her. Maybe he was so determined to keep his chosen family that he felt he needed to prove his worth in order to make them stay?

Sorry this got kinda long but I really enjoyed thinking of an answer for this! :DD

As I’m reading tsc I find it so funny how Wymack gave Jean an envelope of money and was like “Please…I beg of you…buy literally ANYTHING to wear that isn’t like, a couple outfits you infinitely cycle through I’m NOT doing this again.”

He is so real for that LMAO he already has his hands full with the foxes (which include ex mafia kids, twins with at least one murder each under their belts, etc.)

I hope he gets to take a long vacation after what he’s been putting up with, it’s what he DESERVES.

Does Katelyn ever get described in the aftg books?? Cuz I keep seeing her being depicted in fanart as basically like, the female version of Neil. The idea of the twinyards basically having the same type is SO funny to me

anyway as you can tell i enjoyed the bonus chapters. a lot.

andrew's such a fake idgafer no way anyone ever thought this man was apathetic or soulless like...he cares so fucking much??? he beat up four grown men trying to hurt nicky (as a teenager, btw). he enrolled them all in psu so aaron could become a doctor. he threatened nicky at knifepoint not to hurt or touch neil (and this wasn't about neil specifically this was because he's been there, he's been a victim, and he wouldn't want anyone else, even this strange know-nothing kid who he finds suspicious, to experience it). he says "spoil the ending for me, did you kill him?" when renee told him about the man who raped her and she can tell he cares about her answer; he cared to know if she escaped the man who abused her even though he barely knew her at all at the time. he punched matt (a guy like twice his size) for hitting kevin. he nearly choked allison to death for slapping aaron. he freaked out so badly when neil was kidnapped; he literally strangled kevin, lapped the campus multiple times, went through his bag and phone, checked hospital records, felt fear for the first time in years...and everyone's still just like "oh yeah he doesn't have a soul." what??? he yells at someone for the first time when bee has a heart attack. he didn't tell bee about neil even though he told her about so much else because he didn't want to risk her disapproval. he had to sit in silence for a few minutes just processing how easily aaron and bee accepted his relationship with neil. he said "everyone knows now, bee" after they all found out about dr*ke's assault because he couldn't stomach the fact that he thought his loved ones wouldn't trust him to protect them now that they thought he couldn't protect himself. he bought neil armbands to match his so he wouldn't have to see the scars his father's people made on his arms. he ran to neil like all of hell was at his heels when riko threatened him. who the fuck ever thought he was apathetic or soulless.
