Visually Impaired - Tumblr Posts
WHAT IM SAYING!!! obviously it should go without saying that it doesn’t have to affect non-disabled people to be an issue but like. i’m not visually impaired at all and sometimes it’s even really difficult for ME to read some blogs. at least get some alt text man
pls yall im begging.. increase the contrast on your blog.. you do not need that extremely dark red on the black background or the neon yellow on the white background 🙏 please
Blind Tumblr users: don’t get the latest iOS app update!
I just updated my tablet to the newest version of the tumblr app for iOS and it completely broke screen reader access for both VoiceOver and Spoken Content. This has happened in the past already, so I will file a support ticket and copy-paste my text from last time, but this really sucks. I sincerely hope this doesn’t affect all screen reader users, but I’m unsure how they could program this bug in a way it only affects me. If you rely on a screen reader to use the tumblr app, I’d advice to not get the latest update to be on the safe side.
When I say “completely broke access”, what I mean is that no posts on my dash or on individual blogs get read or recognized at all. No plain text, alt text, tags, etc. Note count and buttons still work though.
If you also run into this bug, here’s my advice. If anyone has something more useful, please tell me
File a support ticket and report this bug
Use the browser web version, which still works for me
Interestingly, if you save a post to your drafts and click on “edit” the post text seems to get read correctly. This might be a work-around for some people.
If you have the latest version but your screen reader didn’t break, also please tell me! I would be fascinated to know if this bug is only affecting some people
TL;DR: The latest tumblr app update for iOS made it so screen readers no longer work in the app
Please boost!
I used to not understand why "to turn a blind eye" and "to fall on deaf ears" were considered ableist language because they felt like just some phrases. But now that I think about it, if the only instance where people brought up autism in a conversation was something like "to display autistic uninterest" I'd be pissed off too.
It’s disabled culture to put a bunch of typing quirks and fonts in your posts and then add plain text at the bottom nudge nudge
on a VASTLY different note, my friends were all really sweet and accommodating when I needed to use a screenreader and couldn't see their images. They all put image descriptions and/or alt text with everything they posted until I could see right again. THIS is how to make the world accessible. THIS is the type of "oh alright here's a tool for you" mentality more people need
Shoutout to GTVS, yall are awesome
Like this if you either or both are blind/low vision, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, neurodivergent, disabled, chronically ill, has a rare disability, apart of ROYGBIV crew, introverted, or you are awesome!!!
I want to make a rentry about screenreader accessibility!!
Why do you use a screenreader? Is it due to a disability?
What are common inaccessibility issues you come across?
What information would you like to see in an informational rentry or carrd about screenreaders, plaintext, and image descriptions?
Feel free to link to resources in your reblog for a resource masterlist as well!

I go in to two separate eye doctors, because I've developed some benign Intracranial hypertension and I think it's caused by optic nerve inflammation. I can kind of see it in my vision and occasionally my vision goes blurry. But most of the time it's fine, I'm just near sighted and have always had a hard time putting in contacts, so I always wear glasses unless I have migraines, then I layer over some sunglasses. But I did take a glance at the website and I thought they have prescription sunglasses. Like some you can see out of with your prescription. This is so important to me now I'll have to hunt down both my eye docs for the prescriptions after the appointments lol. Thank you! Also remember that they legally NEED to out you and put that you have driving restrictions on your driver's license. "Corrective Lens" is just another fancy term for "glasses" lol. So yeah it's a disability and it's nothing to be ashamed about. I started wearing glasses when I was 15. For reference that is 15 years ago.
Made the mistake of bringing up that needing glasses is a disability on tiktok and people got real mad.
“You can fix it with glasses” yeah, cuz they’re a disability aid? But like, I still have to pay 160 bucks to use my own fucking eyes?
Like, by definition, if your eyes do not work without aid, you have a disability to see.
Having a disability doesn’t automatically put you in what people consider the “disabled” category, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is in fact, a disability.
as someone who uses a cane every day for a visual impairment that I have and is referred to as a ‘fake blind person’ almost every day, I really do agree with this. thank you very much for posting this. :)
I really think they need to start teaching kids in schools that most blind people can see a little bit, most deaf people can hear a little bit, and most wheelchair users can walk a little bit. And they are still disabled.
This is a PSA...

Please for the love of god, if you have a DNI banner on your posts, make a fucking ID for it. It's an accessibility issue; I have trouble reading certain fonts, so do other people, and there are individuals who can't access your content at all due to visual impairment!
I get it, you want to have that fancy font cuz it adds to the aesthetic. My banners use a hard to read font, too. But you can't just have that without having a plain text ID! It's so incredibly rude and inconsiderate.
Just... put IDs on your posts. It isn't hard: all you really have to do is write out the text on the thing if you're feeling too lazy to describe every detail of it!!

[Banner ID: There's no DNI for this post. However, there's nothing stopping me from blocking you if you're a weirdo or an asshole. End ID]
Top 5 MOST useful tools for blind people just starting out
Top 5 most fave tools for the blind overall
Top 5 least useful
Top 5 fucking weirdest and/or funniest
This is a big ask and I will do my best to answer, with the caveat that I am just a single blind person with memory issues who doesn't remember everything my blind friends have told me. XD I am counting other people as tools in this list because a person with eyes sometimes is a handy tool for us. XD
Top 5 MOST useful tools for blind people just starting out 1. White cane 2. Blindness skills training through centers, government programs like Vocational Rehabilitation, Orientation & Mobility specialists, and anywhere you can find it 3. Membership with the National Talking Book Library aka NLS in your state (US); I think the UK is RNIB and Canada has one, not sure about other countries 4. Supportive family and friends and other blind people if you can find them 5. Screen reader (NVDA is free for Windows, iPhone has VoiceOver, Android uses TalkBack)
Top 5 most fave tools for the blind overall 1. White cane and/or guide dog 2. Text to speech, screen readers, audio books, audio described movies and tv 3. Accessible smart phones (often iPhone but Android is catching up) 4. Bump dots (stick-on tactile dots you put around your home) 5. Braille and refreshable braille displays/notetakers
Top 5 least useful 1. Sighted people inventing crap without talking to any blind people ("smart" canes, "smart" shoes, dangerous devices you hold in your only free hand that claim to tell you what's in front of you but actually don't, screen reader breaking "accessibility" overlays, etc...) 2. That ring which only shows one braille cell at a time (that's not how anyone reads) 3. Strangers giving/yelling vague directions ("It's right over there!", "Oh my god watch out for the stairs (that you are halfway down)!", giving directions to the guide dog who doesn't speak English or any language because they are a dog...) 4. Hot liquid measuring devices (always broken, the noise they make is so fucking loud it's caused me a lot more injury than just sticking my finger in the hot liquid, will wake up the neighbors) 5. All but one use case of AI claiming to be for the blind, at least as far as I've seen
Top 5 fucking weirdest and/or funniest 1. Ping pong balls (good for measuring hot liquids) 2. Funnels (really helpful for pouring liquids) 3. The lanyard strap that sticks to the back of your phone so you can wear it around your neck (looks silly, is incredibly useful) 4. White cane holster (yes it's a thing, I have at least three XD) 5. Things being organized Very Specifically (close your eyes and YOU try to find the remote after someone put it in a random place! XD)
Is it problematic to feel proud when doing something to make stuff more accessible? Especially my posts, I feel like me adding things like adding Image ID's and similar things should be expected of everyone, but whenever I complete one I feel slightly prideful, and then guilty because even though I've never posted art anywhere before and I've never had to describe art before it is kinda the Bare Minimum of what I might be able to do. Also, I feel like even though I'm glad that people who need Image ID'S can now experience my art more easily, part of me thinks it's selfish to expect people who use Image ID'S and screen readers and the like to even enjoy my creations.

edit: thank you for all the love! reminding that there are many, Many more comics in my omagpies tag, and honorably mentioning @things-about-cars-in-posts for unveiling the mystery
Are there any people here who read through my posts that are visually impaired and want me to include image descriptions? I'm sorry if I haven't before. Even though I am visually impaired, I never really use the descriptions or my immersive reader like I should. I'm still learning how to fully advocate for myself, but I don't know how to really get it into my current mindset yet. Sorry if I'm rambling and turning this post more personal than it needs to be.
Hey y'all! Your girl gets new glasses in 2 weeks! I'm finally getting rid of my current ones, because they were looking kinda gunky even after I had cleaned them over as best I can. I can't wait! Maybe I'll get Dark Blue or Black ones this time.
is it really true that the average person's pain level is a 0?
