I want to follow more Elder Scrolls blogs so if you post Elder Scrolls stuff (exclusively or not), give this a reblog or comment or something and I'll follow you if I'm not already following you :)
Knives in both hands
One thing that I think is really missing from the Lirin Discourse (from all directions!) is that Kaladin absolutely did want to be a surgeon. He genuinely wanted it. There were times where he wanted to be a soldier more, but by the time the recruiters came he had decided that he wouldn't join the army after all! In fact, the tragedy of the whole thing is that Roshone's cruelty forced Kaladin into a path he didn't want anymore.
I will never reveal my secrets.

Started reading Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. Every time Hoid narrates a story I just assume he's got Kaladin cornered somewhere and refuses to let him go.
Honeslty this is my one of favorite thing about these stories, how those characters are mentioned and you can find them elsewhere. And sometimes they do stuff like Gaz or the slaver who's name I forgot, or sometimes they don't, their life just continues away from the protagonists, like Hav.
Fun stormlight easter egg!
You remember Hav? A minor character, Kaladin's mentor when he first enlists in the army?
![a screenshot from The Way of Kings. The text reads "Many people were dying on the other side of the chasm, but Kaladin didn't feel a thing for them. No itch to heal them, no desire to help. Kaladin could thank Hav for that, for training him to think in terms of "us" and "them." In Words of Radiance, when Kaladin meets Zahel and thinks about his past as an ex soldier (close but no cigar buddy), he wonders if Hav wound up in a monastery
![A screenshot from Words of Radiance. The text reads, "“You’re a soldier,” Kaladin guessed. “Ex-soldier, I mean.” “Yeah,” the man said. “They call me Zahel.” Kaladin nodded, the irregularities clicking into place. Occasionally, a soldier retired to the ardentia, if he had no other life to return to. Kaladin would have expected them to require the man to at least shave his head. I wonder if Hav is in one of these monasteries somewhere, Kaladin thought idly. What would he think of me now? He’d probably be proud. He always had seen guard duty as the most respectable of a soldier’s assignments."](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9b5ec76dcd07e0283e2e3287a207ab49/375b23046d2a8f24-66/s500x750/82e45b4c4387e98260fdc01cc5b54c53e91c1d05.jpg)
Hav is not in a monastery. When Shallan is out on her first foray for the ghostbloods, we learn he's only a couple warcamps over guarding Amaram's manor!
![A screenshot from Words of Radiance. The text reads, "“Report at the guard posts from now on when you visit,” the man said, pointing toward a small, lit area in the distance behind them. “We’re going to start keeping a secure perimeter.” “Yes, Sergeant.” “Oh, stop harassing the lad, Hav,” the other soldier said. “You can’t expect him to know rules that half the soldiers don’t even know yet.” “On with you,” Hav said, waving Shallan through. She hastened to obey. A secure perimeter? She didn’t envy these men that task. Amaram didn’t have a wall to keep people out, just some striped posts."](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ac8fd578871fe0d2bd45995b74fd9e39/375b23046d2a8f24-29/s500x750/00790b7391b868ccde75c7b05915a1e3e185f78b.jpg)
And him and Kaladin never ended up seeing each other. Shame really.
This animation without the filter because it fucked with the framerate for some reason (this isn't the intended look otherwise, but bleh)
Nah you gotta become me first

Welcome to Dragon of the Day, where I give you your daily dose of dragons. Here’s todays dragon. My favorite, Paarthurnax.
God I love Paarthurnax so much. I love that dulled golden color of his scales. I bet they’d be soft if I hugged him. Speaking of hugs, I bet being wrapped up by his wings would be nice…
Anyways, Paarthurnax is from the hit 2011 game, Skyrim. He does cool stuff like debate philosophy, teach you a new language, and get you to kill his brother. He is pretty epic, I give him a 10/10. Screw you Delphine for trying to make me kill him.
That’s all for today’s dragon. I would say come by tomorrow, but you probably shouldn’t.
Reblog for a wider audience please!

That's really good! Wonderful art.

This brings me hope
getting defensive on behalf of a widely acclaimed and beloved media object is some of the most pathetic behaviour i can imagine for real. like i dont engage because i believe in nice times on the computer and i dont want to wade into mires of purposefully inflammatory bad faith discourse but the base emotional impulse behind those tiktoks about how anyone who doesn't like marvel just wants to watch ten-hour black and white serbian pigeon movies (and that's a bad thing?) inspires a reaction of profound disdain
You had had a plan, once. You figured if you acted impressive enough, got powerful enough, no one would stop you. And it worked quite well for a while. People cowed at your reputation, your grandeaur. Eventually, though, some hero had come in, convinced they could defeat you, and you realized they actually could. So you put up a good fight, whispered some cryptic final words, and vanished away, leaving nothing but dust.
You'd ended up in a small farming down, covered in dust and dirt, though with all your past equipment. The first person you talked to was kind, and you returned the gesture. This felt a lot better than them cowering in fear.
Your time there continued with that pattern. You made friends. Repaid kindness with kindness. You farmed. You wed. You had children. You truly enjoyed your time.
One day you stood outside, tending your field. You could see a dust cloud in the air, coming closer. Odd. At its head were soldiers, clad in shining metal, glowing with light. You wiped the sweat from your brow, then wiped that hand on on the coarse brown pants you wore. Well, it couldn't hurt to see what was coming.
It appeared that it could, you thought, as the tallest figure slammed you into the wall of your hut. They glared at you through the slits in their helm. You recognized those eyes. That voice.
"You will pay tribute. Understood?" Their voice was a growl. The last time you had heard it, it was desperate. Hopeful, but afraid. Now it was angry. But you did not think they recognized you.
"The tribute. The one of souls?"
"Yes! You don't seem to understand, farmer. The demon kind is still out there. They must be stopped. They must be found. And I can only do so with this tribute. Do you want to see this land be wasted, all your crops destroyed? Sacrifices must be made."
You glanced over at your spouse. Your children. This shack. Out the window to your farm.
You could not give them up. The irony alone made it useless. Give them up for this fool to find you, right where you stood? You laughed.
"Why are you laughing! Fine. I'll simply take them then." The hero let you go, and turned towards their soldiers. You stood up, wiggling your hands behind your bag. Remembering those spells agains. Summoning your armor. Your weapons. The treasures you'd amassed, though never used. Always to impress. You needed to work quickly. For your families sake, now.
Within moments, it was done. They had turned away from you, and your spouse, running, caught your eye. They gasped. You'd told them the truth, though never shown them. The soldiers turned. The hero turned, and froze.
"I don't think you're going to need that tribute, fool." You raised the dark blade, etched with pain and weaping shadow, towards the silver armored figure. "You see, I never got to try this on you last time. I've heard it strikes with the vengeance of all damned souls. Well, I thank you for making it that much more effective."
The hero gasped, stepping back, and you grinned. "I didn't have a reason to fight last time. I thought fear would get me through. But it seems as though it wasn't enough. No matter. You've gotten me to want to fight now, I'm impressed. Let's see how strong you really are."
You were once the demon king. “Defeated” by the hero, you went into hiding to pursue a simpler life. Today the “hero” has appeared, threatening you family to pay tribute, not realizing who you actually are. Today you show them what happens when you have something worth fighting to protect.
This reminds me of something i think i saw on the 17th shard, of a stormlight prologue being me stuck in a bathroom, trying to get out, for the entire prologue. At the end, I resort to Awakening, resulting in my exit, in front of guards, right after the assassination, dressed in white.
More Ways for Hoid to be Tortured
[Includes a spoiler for Tress!]
Hoid has sure had it rough lately. He’s had his memories siphoned off, gotten cursed, even spent some quality time as a coatrack. As @kingjasnah points out in this post, Sanderson is setting a precedent here: we’re all expecting ever new and more hilarious shit to happen to Hoid.
So here are some ideas for ways that Hoid might suffer in future Cosmere books.
1. Trapped in a dimension full of talking bananas…who don’t care about stories
Hoid: And that was the story of the banana who looked up.
Banana 1: [yawning]
Banana 2: Sorry, did you say something? I was thinking about radishes.
Banana 3: I feel so neutral about everything you said!
Hoid: …I may have found a place nearly as unpleasant as Komashi.
Hoid: Nearly.
2. A new and ever weirder food craving every day.
Hoid: Well, it seems that today I can stomach nothing except mayonnaise-topped pickles.
Design: And you’re sure you’re not pregnant?
3. Trapped on a planet during a time of no plot relevance
Design: Hey, will you look at that!
Design: According to the town newspaper, old lady Dennis FINALLY figured out who’s been eating her lettuce.
Design: Get this–it was a rabbit!
Design: That’s something, right?
Hoid: W-Was it an invested rabbit?
Design: Nope! Just a normal one.
Hoid (sinking further into his turtleneck): I have GOT to get my Luck back.
4. Can only communicate via song…after losing his perfect pitch
Hoid (singing): And thus you should learn, / that if I must, I will let this planet buuuuuuurn!
Design: Your pitch is off by a mere .0005%!
Hoid (singing): And it’s really not fair–this much is true, / that my perfect pitch, went straight to yooooou!
5. Turned into a rat
Rat-Hoid: The worst part is…it’s not even original.
6. De-Aged into a Child
Hoid: It’s not so bad, really.
Hoid: People perhaps don’t take me the most seriously, but then, I was the King’s Wit for a while so I’m used to that.
Hoid: …I do hear the word “precocious” a lot.
7. De-Aged into a Baby
Hoid: (furiously signing with his fat baby hands) What is this, an isekai?!
Design: Hmmm…I should start a babysitting business.
8. Unable to respond to anyone unless his response rhymes
Design: I love it, to be orange.
Design: If I ever need some peace and quiet, I just end every sentence with “orange.”
Hoid: Once again I must ask you to act a bit less like a poison-filled sporange.
Design: It’s fun to watch him incorporate that word into all of his sentences!
9. Grows to the size of a mountain
Hoid: It’s not (ouch) that I mind (ouch) the mountain-climbing business that Design (ouch) is running.
Hoid: But the constant (ouch) pick-axes driving into my shins (ouch) does get a tad…distracting.
Hoid: (ouch)
10. Handcuffed to Kelsier, ala Light & L
Kelsier: [eyes gleaming]
Kelsier: And this time you can’t escape me, Drifter!
Hoid: Hey, is that a spike in your eye, or are you just happy to see me?
Kelsier: …
Kelsier: T-That doesn’t even make any sense!
Hoid: …This might actually be fun.
Well, its not gonna be me, even when I finally do live up to my name.
All things aside, considering the sixth of the dusk sequel preview we got, I'm prone to say something new. Something we haven't seen before. Something that just pulls all the sides apart and it's just a big mess.
I feel like, though, there is a big bad that'll be around. It might be Odium, but considering stormlight, I don't think he'd still have the fused, after 10 books. Considering Kelsier, maybe, but I don't think he'd end up a bona fide big bad, just a meddler. Maybe a villain, definitely and antagonist, but I doubt the big bad.
We already have so many factions and I feel like we're just gonna keep adding onto that, especially as different groups leave planets in different ways, having different groups from different cultures on planets as well as different groups from the same culture on a planet to groups that are unified and from multiple planets.
I do think Kelsier is gonna last longer than Odium though. Hopefully I get the chance to punch him again.
I think we're finally finding the issue here, which is that dnd has pulled from so many different forms of media and archetypes, and often from different ones that are entirely different in set up and power scaling and magic and such. To simplify, we pulled wizards from things like myths and fancy magic users and the fighter is basically "well its medieval, gotta have a plate wearing sword guy" . And unless you set up a world to accomdate that, to either figure out the neccesarily limitations on magic to have a fighter make sense as being somewhat practical, or expand the magic (non-real elements) to include martial prowess and toughness, the fighter and the wizard basically come from different realities.
Anyway this is why wotc should publish more individual setting books with actual different rules that don't actually work together across settings. Because if you want different themes to your game world, the way players understand that is through the mechanics, and therefore how you define the theme. And if they want to have some big way it all works, they need to stop holding onto these fragments of tradition that say random things about how the rules should be, from earlier editions, that no longer actually work in the setting and world they're trying to build, but are just holdovers.
I doubt that will ever happen. But it would be nice, if they said "these rules are how greyhawk works, this is how eberron works, this is how the forgotten realms works." But at that point the ideal would be to have a different rpg for each one. Which won't happen.
I suppose a compromize could be to establish a firm setting, admit that the rules are unique to that setting and probably shouldnt be one to one ported elsewhere, and then make conversion kits galore for any kind of theme and setting, rather than trying to shoehorn them all into the original setting.
oh but as an aside: in terms of giving classes stuff to do outside their central domain of expertise, you don't really need to look for esoteric stuff for fighters, they've got, like, "being scary", "being beefy", "being good at smashing or moving things", "being athletic", and that's fine? Like if those aren't coming out as useful in a dungeon crawl, or if spellcasters are matching them just on the basis of some handwavey "magic can do anything!" explanation, maybe that's the problem and not that fighters need broader domains of built-in competence. those seem like things that should be useful and character-defining outside of fights, don't they?
Hell yeah.
![Hell Yeah.](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bc6d7685a31cfcc9910d796d94d0c307/6797431915df34dc-9f/s500x750/8e67c51ba604c937ec7037b9bc76b045ee8ee834.jpg)
Hell yeah.
Empathy. Motivation. Progress.
The secret to making your readers care about a character lies in these 3 sliding scales, according to Brandon Sanderson.
![Empathy. Motivation. Progress.](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ff5e30d51f254057413642f80b2d321e/d3bef90602cdd00f-cd/s500x750/734303729726ca6bcd3d7d99d8eb5b90347a6464.jpg)
Show throughout the story the answers to the following bullets:
Empathy (likability)
How relatable are they?
Are they kind or sympathetic to others?
How do other characters treat them?
Motivation (proactivity)
Are the character’s motivations interesting?
Can the character have what they desire? Do they initially avoid what motivates them?
How do a character’s motivations conflict with their flaws, and/or tie to the plot?
What steps is the character taking to get what they want?
People have many things that motivate them. Sometimes they can never have something they desire, sometimes they don’t want the thing they actually need at first. Motivations can conflict with each other, the plot, and a character’s morality.
Progress (competence)
What flaws does the character need to face in order to progress?
Does the character overcome their flaws, fail, step around them, etc.?
Will the character fulfill their promise(s)?
Motivation and progress often go hand-in-hand. Progression should be hard, to keep characters in check.
These sliding scales work just as well for protagonists as they do for villains, and everyone else in between.
Remember, the scales shouldn’t be maxed out. A character perfect at all three sliding scales is difficult to care about, and your characters are your story’s lifeblood.

Yes, regrettably, that wasn't me. That was Tolkien, or a shadow of him. An idea. The idea being if he ended up on Scadrial, like me. Though without my spaceship
HOID.
HOID IS ON PAGE AS I AM WRITING THIS POST HE CAME BACK AS ANOTHER INFORMANT THIS TIME IN FADREX CITY
ok but when he first got on page i was excited because i read his description as having white hair, and i know that his Yolin appearance has white hair. then, i thought it wasn't actually him, because he was also described as old.
then hoid mentioned spren and i knew it was him.
also skaa died really young pre-Collapse so his appearance might seem old to vin.
or he just Lightweaved himself to look older.
EDIT: IT WAS NOT HIM
i was talking about a character named Slowswift who i thought was Hoid, but Hoid himself is mentioned by name a page after but doesn't have screentime (at least in the part i'm at)

M51 and then some
Galaxies are often far more than the stuff we see, even in the best of Hubble photo's, there are stars, dust and gas that stretch out at densities too low to be picked up in some of the most iconic images.
Here M51 is recorded over 255 Hours, collecting all the light and gas at far lower densities, revealing the structure of M51 and the merging galaxy, and how huge plumes of stars and dust and gas are being kicked out way beyond the apparent confines of the spiral galaxy itself.
This is the same situation around most galaxies, the halo area reaching out from the Milky Way so far, it's thought in some parts to potentially be interacting with Andromeda's halo, over 2.1 million light years away, albeit at a very low level (so far).
Let's go visit it. Who's with me?

JWST Looks Towards the Most Distant Star Ever Seen
JWST was designed to look towards the early universe, and there we see countless galaxies, but individual stars are usually far too faint to really be able to separate from all the other stars around them. Even galaxies fairly close to us can be a huge technical challenge to zoom in to the point of being able to see individual stars, and when you consider the closest star (not counting our sun) isn't even visible in the night sky to the naked eye at 4.24 light years, when we're talking millions even billions of light years, just seeing the galaxies is a miracle within itself.
That was until Hubble picked out Earendel, an actual individual star gravitationally lensed across 12.9 billion light years.
![JWST Looks Towards The Most Distant Star Ever Seen](https://64.media.tumblr.com/96175d171511f5c9fd91cbefa7f88f92/38249bb23e1e74cd-f0/s500x750/3725be89af923f4d5afe3b13cbaaea2ae6a5452f.png)
What was exciting about this was that this star was in existence within the first billion years of the universe, so maybe it was a population III star, one of the original stars theorised to have populated that early universe. The problem for Hubble was, being an optical telescope, it couldn't see all of the wavelength data coming from the star, only that which had become visible after being red shifted.
Now, JWST has also done the same, and it has the data to see what kind of star this is, and interestingly it's a blue B type star, much more massive than our Sun, but similar to the kind of stars most visible in open clusters, and born today in our own galaxy.
What's more, JWST also detected red light, potentially pointing at a companion star, which wouldn't be too surprising given most B type stars are binary in nature.
![JWST Looks Towards The Most Distant Star Ever Seen](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1e511c65b045a0e88b4a462d67d987f3/38249bb23e1e74cd-60/s500x750/bbddf3f3a812afb1864182d6c7d4899147beb7e9.png)
While this star doesn't appear to be a Population III star, it is evidence that we can pick out light from some of the earliest stars in our universe, and expectations are that it's only a matter of time before such a star is detected.

It is sad, yes. All things fade, even the greatest things. The sky itself, around us, here.
But it's wonderful to me that we have it now, we can see it now, and we can study how it came to be.
And considering our lifespans, if we ever visit across it, it'll probably still exist.
Laniakea - The Supercluster of Galaxies🌌
Or: the infodump I'm writing to prevent myself from feeling upset.
Earth is part of our solar system, that is part of our home galaxy called Miky Way, which is part of a 'local group' of galaxies, which itself is part of a bigger group of galaxies called the Virgo cluster.
But the Virgo cluster itself is just one of a large number of galaxy clusters, themselves collections of hundreds to thousands of large galaxies which have been mapped out in the nearby Universe: the Virgo cluster, with the Centaurus cluster, the Great Attractor, the Norma Cluster & many others!
Together, they make up a much larger structure & if you sum up every galaxy in it, it is fully anticipated that the total number should exceed 100,000.
This is the collection of matter that is called beautifully after the hawaiian word which means 'immense heaven'
✨️Laniakea✨️
But let's start with the beginning, shan't we?
The Big Bang happened roughly 13.8 billion years ago & in the early stage of all that matter, antimatter, radiation, fields, etcetera, there wasn't a uniform sea of these energetic quanta.
Instead, there were tiny imperfections - at about the 0.003% level, which is VERY VERY SMALL- on all scales, where some regions had slightly more or slightly less matter-and-energy than average.
In each one of these regions, a great cosmic race ensued. The race was between two competing phenomena:
The EXPANSION, which works to drive all the matter & energy apart
The GRAVITATION, which works to pull all forms of energy together & causes massive material to clump & cluster together
With both normal matter & dark matter populating our Universe - but not in sufficient quantities to cause the entire Universe to recollapse (IMPERFECTIONS saved us!) - the first star formations happened & then star clusters, with the first ones appearing less than 200 million years after the Big Bang.
Over the next few hundred million years, structure began to appear on even larger larger scales, with the first galaxies forming, star clusters merging together, & even galaxies growing to attract matter from the lower-density regions nearby.
As time went on & on, galaxies gravitated together to form the Universe’s first galaxy clusters. With up to thousands of Milky Way-sized galaxies in them, massive mergers form giant elliptical behemoths at the cores of these clusters!
On even larger spatial scales & even longer timescales, the cosmic web began to take shape, with filaments of dark matter tracing out a series of interconnecting lines.
Dark matter drives the gravitational growth of the Universe, while normal matter interacts through forces other than gravity as well, leading to the formation of gas clumps, new stars & even new galaxies on long enough timescales.
Meanwhile, the space between the filaments, the so-called underdense regions of the Universe, give up their matter to the surrounding structures, becoming great cosmic voids.
Galaxies dot these filaments & fall into the larger cosmic structures where multiple filaments intersect.
On long enough timescales, the most spectacular nexuses of matter even began attracting one another, causing galaxy groups & clusters to begin forming even larger structures:
💫Galactic Superclusters💫
For me, it's a beautiful & a very comforting idea that represents structures on scales larger than a visual inspection would reveal.
But there’s a problem with Laniakea in particular & with superclusters in general: these are not real, bound structures, but only apparent structures that are currently in the process of dissolving away entirely.
There isn't just this "race" between an initial expansion & the counteracting gravitational force caused by matter & radiation.
In addition, there’s also a positive form of energy: dark energy. It causes the recession of distant galaxies to speed up as time goes on & gets more relevant the bigger the scale gets from which you look at it.
If there were no dark energy, Laniakea would most certainly be real.
Over time, its galaxies and clusters would all mutually mutually attract, leading to an enormous grouping of 100,000+ galaxies!
Unfortunately, dark energy became the dominant factor in our Universe’s evolution approximately 6 billion years ago & the various components of the Laniakea supercluster are already accelerating away from one another.
Billions of years from now, Laniakea will be torn apart by the Universe’s expansion, forever adrift as lonesome islands in the great cosmic ocean.
A bit sad, huh?
