as some1 who's mixed [british and african] i hav my own opinions on this, i don't think the ppl who do this r trying 2 look black is the thing i think they r trying 2 look mixed, or rather what *they* think a mixed person looks like, they r trying 2 look "ambiguous" they r trying 2 get this "mixed look" that they will partake in eugenics and go hav sex w/ a black man in hopes their kid will hav 2, idk tbh i feel like a lot of ppl 4get that mixed specific racism is a thing and so try 2 act like racism that's more directed against ppl who r mixed w/ black is racism only against monoracial black ppl and don't mention mixed ppl at all, even in the poc community sometimes this is a problem, like if i hav 2 c 1 more youtube vid of a monoracial person in america talking abt how "mixed ppl aren't allies" and "mixed ppl r just the same as white ppl" 1] not even acknowledging that not every person is mixed w/ white and 2] demonising those of us who r like we're watered down and not "rly poc" im gonna lose my shit, [not abt the vid linked in the thread, haven't watched bc i already know what blackfishing is just talking abt how every1 is treating this so far like its only racist against monoracial black ppl] idk u guys just seem 2 only acknowledge that mixed ppl can experience racism when it's ppl talking abt the mixed baby fetish and even then most ppl only talk abt it thru the lense of it being bad 4 monoracial black ppl and not 4 yk the mixed baby, u guys just seem 2 stop caring we exist and go from almost acknowledging what we go thru 2 demonising us as soon as we hit puberty, bc that's when u start saying "we're just as bad as white ppl" when we hav 2 deal w/ the fetishisation of our very existence and girls doing fukin mixed face 2 try 2 look like a cut and paste version of us that was fed 2 them by media and then don't believe us when we say we're mixed bc we don't hav that mythical "mixed look" that never exists outside of a white woman trying 2 look like us and then any of us who r 2 "white passing" get called racist by the same white ppl who do this shit just bc we're saying that we're mixed bc we fuking r if u wanna talk abt the racism against monoracial black ppl, great, amazing, pls do that but don't fucking come on here and act like the racism that we as mixed ppl face is only against monoracial ppl, not only is it pushing us 2 the side it just boosts this idea that we don't experience any form of racism when we do and it makes things legit harder 4 us, also i c u guys dragging Arianna [which don't get me wrong i agree] but its also worth mentioning the Kardashians who imo r even worse when it comes 2 this and popularising and normalising this shit, not 2 mention all the ppl on tiktok glueing their eyelids 2 look asian or mixed w/ asian

i had a problem w/ eating where i wouldn't eat any more than 2 small meals a day and sometimes only 1 small meal a day and sometimes not even that and yet bc of how my fat distribution naturally is i still had my big thighs and ppl called me fat bc of it, not 2 mention the fact that most of the "positivity posts" abt my body type [im kinda a pear shape] is white ppl fetishising it and acting like that somehow makes them better

not 2 mention finding out that 1 of the reasons i exist is bc my dad had a race fetish but whenever monoracial ppl talk abt stuff like that most of the 1s ive seen on youtube still do a 180 2 then talk abt how "mixed ppl aren't our allies" and say we're the same as white ppl, it rly does feel that as soon as we hit puberty they demonise us especially when we start talking abt our own experiences

then there's the fact that the "mixed look" is defined atm by white ppl trying 2 look like us but then that gets labelled as oppression that's only against monoracial ppl

tbh this is y after years of putting up w/ this shit im starting think that the term white passing should b retired bc it's just the same as the term straight passing being used against bisexual ppl, dealing w/ bigotry and then on top of that dealing w/ erasure from ur own community and being told u don't belong there only 4 them 2 then turn around and call u stuck up 4 not interacting w/ them is not a privilege

idk much abt what what context this was supposed 2 b in when this person who originally said this said it but this is all the context i got 4 this tumblr post so it's going on here, let's make this clear; colourism is a problem and should b talked abt and we should try 2 get rid of colourism and some light-skinned and ""white passing"" members of the community can experience erasure and oppression both from outside and within the community r 2 ideas that can and should exist 2gether, just like how it's not ok 2 talk over or try 2 silence the voices of ppl w/ darker skin when they talk abt colourism it's also not ok 2 talk over or silence the voices of light-skinned and ""white passing"" ppl when we tell u abt our struggles like the constant erasure that we face from all sides [will add more when i find more]

yeh as some1 who is ""white passing"" [don't like the term 4 in it's current use 4 so many reasons] ppl just always assume im white and then when i tell them i'm not they try 2 tell me that me being mixed w/ black "doesn't count" or w/e bc it wasn't 1 of my parents who's black it's my grandma but like,,,

1] it still makes me not 100% white

2] fuk u if there was a literal racial slur made 4 ppl who r "a quarter black" like me then i don't think u then get 2 turn around and call me white and say that my black side doesn't count [not putting the slur here bc i don't trust like that but if u know u know]

3] my mother despite being technically born in the uk was raised entirely in zimbabwe and doesn't rly consider herself english

4] i've experienced racism on multiple occasions despite what so many ppl like 2 think, if im black enough 2 experience racism u don't get 2 tell me im not black enough 2 call myself mixed

5] im not even fully white passable [which i would still b able 2 call myself mixed if i was i just find it weird how ppl act like i am fully white passable] like,,, my hair and body r different bc im mixed pale skin isn't the same thing as being able 2 pass as white and it's not like ppl don't notice those things abt me

This isn’t like, specifically a fandom or media thing, but I’m kind of tired of the way people discuss (or often don’t discuss) multi-racial or multi-ethnic identities. Mixed people are literally so diverse and no two of us are going to have the exact same experiences. I remember once during class (I don’t remember what the exact topic or whatever was, but I think it was a writing class) we were discussing an article written about a mixed-race woman (I believe white/black) and everyone was just repeatedly referring to her as a black woman. And I didn’t say anything at the time because I was uncomfortable and I’m bad at speaking up for things that make me uncomfortable. But now I wish I had. Because maybe she thought of herself as a black woman, but none of us knew whether or not she did.

And like. I’m half-black, half-white, and I would be extremely uncomfortable if someone referred to me as a black woman. Because 1) I don’t look black. Straight-up, if you just looked at my face you would never assume I was black or part-black. I know because many people have guessed or assumed my race and they have never gotten it right. I am Ambiguously Brown. 2) I was raised by my mom, who’s white, and there are a lot of gaps in my knowledge of African-American history and culture (part of this is also a failure on the part of the American education system but what else is new). One of my friends and I (also a multi-racial woman, though not the same as me) used to joke that we were basic half-white bitches. No I would not be comfortable if someone who wasn’t a close friend, or if someone who wasn’t mixed, tried to do this with me. 3) Even if the first two weren’t true, I’m not black. I’m part black, and all aspects of my race are important to me, not just the ones that are most “obvious” to other people.

And that’s part of my biggest problem like this - people making assumptions about other mixed people’s experience with their identity. The first one that comes to mind is Keanu Reeves. I’ve definitely seen people make jokes about him being a popular unproblematic internet white guy - but he’s not white. He’s part white, part Chinese, part Hawaiian (his name is literally Hawaiian). And I can feel people rolling their eyes that it doesn’t matter or he still has privilege, so it doesn’t “count”. And I won’t deny that he may have privilege because of his appearance, but it is not your place to say that other people’s identity doesn’t count. You don’t live in other people’s brains, and you don’t know how he relates to his identity. You don’t know his experience. You don’t know how it’s affected him - or how assumptions like that affect him. This also goes for people on the opposite end of the spectrum, like my high school friend “Dimitri”, who was part black, part Native, and people typically assumed he was black. I wish now that we’d talked about this together - I don’t know how it affected him, but I do know how other people’s assumptions can affect you.

it's no mistake or coincidence imo that x-men is a series marketed 2wards ppl in minority groups and the representation of ppl who don't want 2 play nice w/ the oppressors is magneto, it's p obvious [at least from what little i've seen] that x-men is essentially just propaganda 2 try 2 demonise ppl who would rise up against their oppressors instead of asking them nicely if we can hav equal rights yet, not saying u can't enjoy x-men btw just wish that more ppl would watch media w/ their brains switched on instead of just ignoring all cultural context and then getting mad when ppl don't ignore said cultural context

it's like, disney villains were made queer coded 2 demonise queer ppl, and a lot of queer ppl reclaim those villains now bc of this, and no1 is saying that if a queer person reclaims a queer villain that that somehow now means that they agree w/ their actions in txt bc we r aware of the cultural context and keep that in mind

magneto was a character that was made 2 demonise ppl who's activism isn't oppressor friendly, i can't speak 4 what it was originally but at least what little i've seen it seems like it was written by the majority and marketed 2 minority groups 2 try 2 stop us from getting any ideas abt rising up against our oppressors

i feel like a lot of activism is hurt by "allies" that just hijack our movements 2 try 2 prove "what good allies" or "what good ppl" they r and then they focus the movement around them and their ego and what they will and won't accept instead of our activism being allowed 2 b centred around us, the oppression we face and our goals 2 work 2wards our own liberation, the ways in which a lot of these "allies" try 2 prove that they r good allies is in ways that hurts the community they r saying they r helping or in a way that hurts another community that wouldn't hav been caught in the crossfire otherwise
