You know, I was kind of happy since my country made plastic bags not free anymore but I guess everyone else isn't doing too well

Okay. I Know I Say This A Lot But I Think This Might Actually Be My Favorite Piece

okay. i know i say this a lot but i think this might actually be my favorite piece

it started with a robot sketch, then a two page poem, then I started getting the full vision for what the illustration would look like. As I did that and figured out how i'd add text, the full idea unraveled.

This takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity is extinct and the natural world is finally starting to thrive, although there are issues and crises due to what humanity left behind. if this is well received I might turn it into a series, a way of approaching climate change in an imaginative and whimsical light, also i'm really excited I drew a fox for the first time.

it's a little different to what i usually draw but I'm on a higher dose of meds and a little happier, so while that lasts here's some illustrated whimsy :)

Hear me out, Climate Change (in my accords) is a hoax but, since last 100 years or so (mainly after industrialisation) the drastic change of temperature and environment around us have changed rapidly, causing an ecological crisis. The last time earth had such change was when it was just one billion year old. During the impact of an asteroid during the Cretaceous period led to the global temperature increase upto 250% which led to extinction of major flora and fauna.

The only difference is, climate changes gradually after a time due to the influence of nature, but according to the reports the heat waves we are facing right now, wasn’t supposed to be an issue for the next 150 years.

If earth is supposed to be habitable for 2 more billion years, just minus 150-200 years from it before it resents again or gets engulfed by our sun. It has always been a game of survival of the fittest and that’s the truth.

We humans have interfered with the natural balance of the earth. We are crying for the issues we have caused in the first place in the name of modernism. We intervened with the natural process, but we never created climate crisis. It always existed, we just added fuel to the fire for our own destruction and for the next generations.

In the end, yes we humans are the reason why earth is going to die sooner and making other species suffer due to our actions. But evidently earth will die out someday. It’s natural. That’s what universe has been telling us. But I’m against misuse of resources and deforestation. For our own benefit we have been making other flora and fauna suffer and making so many specimen go extinct. We need to make such resolutions to control certain issues but not blame everything to “climate change due to human actions.”

HELLO IF YOU LIVE IN THE US YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

If you're feeling hopeless in light of recent news headlines, don't panic!! There are still things we can do to turn around climate change!

CALL YOUR REPS AND TELL THEM TO SUPPORT CLIMATE ACTION IN THE BUDGET RECONCILIATION BILL

Hank (ya know, internet guy) explains this step:

The gist of the video is: budget reconciliations are special in that they don't need 60 votes to pass the filibuster. They only need a senate majority. And Democrats have that majority in the senate.

The budget reconciliation bill is capable of putting targets in place to drop carbon emissions by 80% by 2030. That is a big deal if we can get it passed.

Here's what you (a US citizen) can do:

call your senators (and representatives if you want!) and tell them to support climate action in the budget reconciliation bill. Hank has a script in the blurb of the video that's under the readmore - and I'll put my own modified script underneath as well.

Please. Call both your senators - Reps and Dems alike. We may not get this close to meaningful climate legislation for another decade.

Hank's Script:

Hey, I just wanted to call and say how important it is to me that YOUR REPRESENTATIVE OR SENATOR is taking climate change seriously. I know we've got a chance right now to set targets, like getting an 80% decrease in emissions by 2030 and investing a lot in new and existing technologies.

Anything that YOUR SENATOR OR REPRESENTATIVE can do to make this a reality really matters so much, and I appreciate it.

IF THEY ASK FOR MORE INFORMATION (sometimes you get a real person) I just know that the budget reconciliation bill is one of our last chances to pass meaningful laws that will affect our impact on the climate. Anything to spur investment in clean energy, carbon capture, or energy storage is really important. But most importantly, we need to see real, ambitious targets for decreasing carbon emissions.

My Modified Script:

Hello,

My name is YOUR NAME and I am a constituent from CITY, STATE. I wanted to email you and say how important it is to me that SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE is taking climate change seriously. Right now, we have a chance to set targets, like getting an 80% decrease in carbon emissions by 2030.

I am urging SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE to support climate change action in the budget reconciliation bill. This bill is one of our last chances to pass meaningful laws that will affect our impact on the climate. Anything to spur investment in clean energy, carbon capture, or energy storage is really important. But most importantly, I would like to see real, ambitious targets for decreasing carbon emissions.

Thank you for your time, and have a good day.

'selfish'

Selfish is a special word to me.

When I first was introduced to the world of politics, issues and injustice, people seemed to use every word except for selfish.

'disagreeable'

'committed to something far less important'

'suspicious'

I don't think that makes sense. Selfish means to think only oneself, to lack consideration for others. In a way being selfish has evolved to mean to preserve oneself at the cost of others emotions or in larger cases, rights.

If an entire country can print 'In God We Trust' on currency, surely we can agree that believing in what seems impossible couldn't be that much of a stretch.

Selfish is the word I think describes those who fail to act

On climate change

On pay gaps both racially and gender based

Even just the gap in rights between anyone

Why on earth in a golden age of technology and prosperity does the term of 'golden age' still only apply to the 1%

It's 2020 people.

Ten years and a 50% chance to change the date on the end of the world.

Stop being so bloody selfish and think about how cool it would be to be remembered for changing things. Instead of being dammed to hell because you refused.

Just, stop and think.

There is hope. I promise. Young people just won their case against the state of Montana. Ecuadoreans braved escalating political violence to vote against oil drilling in the Amazon. Brazilian deforestation is down by enormous amounts since Lula took office. They’ve invented hydropanels that synthesise pure water from the air. People are farming in solar parks. A ship just launched for its maiden voyage using rigid sails designed to mimic wind turbine blades. EV sales are taking off, and, more crucially, cities are re-assessing their very relationship with the car. By the 2024 Olympics the river Seine will be safe for people to swim in again. More and more people are replacing their gas boilers with heat pumps. Solarpunks are growing crops in their back garden and distributing them to their neighbours. Great tracts of land are being given back to nature. Young people are channelling their energies into meaningful careers. Pilots are leaving the aviation industry. Yes, the world is dark and terrible and full of awful dangers that keep you up at night, but we are a huge movement that grows every day in numbers and power. Your small actions matter. Our collective triumphs are increasing. Things are going to get harder, extreme weather will be more common, but with ingenuity, resilience and crucially, COMMUNITY, we can build an equitable world on this strange, tired old planet. See you in the future.

adding to this: space exploration can also help manage and even reverse industrial climate change! in addition to satellite monitoring, there’s a very effective atmospheric carbon recapture process called accelerated weathering, where a soft silicate mineral is exposed to air and rain and uptakes massive amounts of carbon as it reacts with the water and air during erosion. the best mineral for the job is olivine. guess what most asteroids are predominantly made of? olivine!

WE CAN FIX THIS IF WE TRY!

it’s a huge investment, sure. but cost is nothing when you’re investing in the future stability of the planetary environment.

March for Climate Justice Philippines - November 28, 2015

In the Philippines, to see people marching on the streets with colorful costumes, streamers, and banners, followed by a band playing loud and upbeat music, signify that there’s a fiesta going on. On the other hand, to see people gathered by the roads, chanting protests, would mean totally different - there is a rally. This time, however, it was a little bit of both.

Last November 28, 2015, many people flocked Quezon City Memorial Circle to march for climate justice. This was held in line with the Global Climate March happening in 150 other countries prior the COP21 in Paris. COP21 refers to 21st Conference of Parties, wherein global leaders discussed and agreed on actions to take in the future that will prevent climate change from reaching catastrophic levels.

Spearheaded by the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice, the march in Quezon City is just one of the many staged marches across the country; other sites (in Luzon only) were in Semirara Island, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Laguna, Bataan, and Zambales. Given that the Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, it is paramount for people here to stage a nationwide mass action. It is time everyone in the world considers more seriously and carefully the negative impacts of carbon emissions and our reliance on fossil fuels.

Many people from different sectors of society came together, may it be religious groups, labor unions, youth organizations, even groups of foreigners, just to name a few. Hearts all beating as one, we lobbied for Climate Justice around the 25-hectare QC circle.

Among the themes that echoed during the protest are energy transformation, right to food, land, and water, justice and reparations for affected people, protection of our common home, jobs and just transition, and youth. I was part of the Cut it Deep, Cut Now group demanding the increase in global temperature be limited to 1.5°C. Whether it’s reducing exposure to severe drought, flooding, spread of disease, intensity of typhoons or sea level rise, scientific studies conclusively say the damage will be profoundly reduced by staying within 1.5° of warming --- which was actually SUCCESSFULLY agreed upon in COP21 a few days after the global march! YES, you read that right!

For the first time in COP history, representatives to the COP21 finally reached a universal and legally-binding agreement on climate change last December 12. One of the agreed upon terms is that developed and developing countries will ensure and are required to limit their emissions to relatively safe levels - 1.5°C. Finally! If you want to see list of other agreed terms, check this link: http://www.c2es.org/international/negotiations/cop21-paris/summary.

COP21, as well as the March for Climate Justice Philippines, were momentous. I’m really proud to have been part of this grand, festive, and historic march. However, this is just the first step in the battle against climate change. There’s still a lot to be done, one of which is standing by the agreement. I hope the Philippines, the government and its people, act and contribute to this fight as it is our homes and lives that hang in the balance.

Line drawing of a drum, drum sticks, a trombone with the extinction rebellion symbol inside. Haiku (see below) floats alongside with the final line underneath.

Day 5: Build. This took me a while, I was stuck until early on Monday morning, London in rush hour - not usually the most inspirating time and place - when, walking into Trafalgar Square with the beat of the Samba band drumming at my back, I suddenly felt that things were things were finally, actually, changing.

Rebels everywhere, thank you.
