Cruella 2021 - Tumblr Posts
Cruella is far and beyond my favorite of the stupid ass Disney reboots. The rest of this post is pretty much just spoilers: The soundtrack was great, we get found family like woah, me and my brother turned and looked at each other at the same point and go โyou know I really hope she actually does make a Dalmatian coatโ and she still got to be batshit crazy. It ran a bit too long, the dialogue was clunky in spots, and the cgi on the dogs was distractingly bad, but none of that was enough to really sink it in my opinion. And a big win, for once the villain who was queercoded by obsession with a clearly younger woman in the animated version wasnโt given a male love interest as part of her redemption. (this is a direct call out to Maleficent)
The costumes and aesthetics of the film were great as always, and this was the first time in one of these live action reboots that the โจ๐ฅฐ #girl-boss moments didnโt feel cheap, because it actually devoted a huge amount of runtime to relationships between women. And as a fun side effect you get to see a really cool battle that isnโt just a poorly lit fight scene between a cgi lion and hyena, and isnโt two women testing physical strength, but rather both doing an explicitly feminine thing in making and showing dresses.
I really enjoyed how it somehow managed to both make her a fairy tale protagonist, (yes her mother was pushed of a cliff by Dalmatians, her mother had to die tragically because thatโs how the fairy tale formula works, good mothers die early) and also still a black leather wearing, heachmen leading, badass who renames her house Hell Hall and herself โDevilโ because the one thing this film absolutely does right is make sure she doesnโt believe sheโs somehow morally superior, she knows sheโs a villain, and if you believe she had good reason to be thatโs your own fault. (take notes edgy villain character study movies)
I completely understand that this film wonโt be everyoneโs cup of tea, but all in all it was mine, 7/10.
Watching Cruella is the plan for tonight. Have a lot of work this week, so this will put me in the proper frame of mind don't you think?!
I want to make art... and I want to make trouble. Are you in?

Carlos was never really able to abandon Cruella. He carries her colours in his clothes, her marks. He doesn't understand why. Carlos doesnโt understand why every time Evie sews him a new jacket, he feels compelled to paint those damned Dalmatian spots against the white leather.
Nor does he understand why he must obsessively keep the same colour palette when dressing. He just knows he has to. It's familiar. Feels like home.
Carlos is still wary of dogs; Dude is the only exception.
One time, in winter, while strolling around Auradon, he saw a girl walking a beautiful golden retriever. He doesnโt know where the thought came from, but he did think, โThat fur would make a very nice and warm shawl.โ He immediately lowered his head and walked back to his dorm quietly.
The thoughts are always there, though. Sometimes he feels like he is in his fur closet, trapped, and hurting from a beating his mother gave him.
Sometimes he feels like he is in the streets again, jumping on rooftops and stepping on clean laundry with his muddy boots.
Sometimes he craves it. He doesn't want to go back, obviously, but he misses the routine, the familiarity of it all. He will deny it until he dies, but he misses home just like Mal does.
He still has the Isle in his mind, constantly. He thinks about the fun he used to have there. Carlos remembers stealing candies, apples, scarves... He remembers the thrill he felt. Life is not like this anymore. Life is different in Auradon.
At moments, he is disgusted. The colourful clothes, the bright blue sky... He goes out, anyway, and puts on the best smile he has.
On one particular family day, Carlos could barely believe his eyes. Across the field, the stupid Dalmatians were licking some food off a plate that was offered to them by none other than Anita Radcliffe, the mutt keeper. Carlos sank his nails into his sweaty palms. The voices were stronger than ever: "Skin it!" "Make a coat!" "Spots! Spots! Oh, such beautiful spots!"
Carlos couldn't trust himself to come near the dogs that evening.
When his eyes crossed with Anita and Roger, they were afraid. Of what? Him? He chuckled to himself; it did feel kinda nice... but Carlos does not allow himself to savour fear anymore, not like he used to.
Chad Charming made a fuss with Ben when they were training one day. One of their teammates fell and got badly hurt. Chad swears that he saw Carlos laughing under his helmet. Ben shrugged it off, saying, "Carlos is a good kid; he would never." Charming was not convinced.
What can he say? He's just an Isle kid, anyway. And he chose good! It's not like Carlos has ONE evil bone in his body... right?

Within reason I might add
they were down HORRENDOUS for eachother i fear
I love that movie!!
As someone whose mother's dog almost tore my arm off when I was 3 and still has a fear of dogs to this day, I get really uncomfortable when people make fun of the "dogs killed her mom" thing. As if going through dog related trauma at an early age wouldn't leave you with an aversion to them.
The whole "Disney villain hates something because of trauma" meme that started with Cruella makes me kinda angry because it's one of the earliest examples of people either not understanding what actually happened, or worse, people not bothering to actually see the movie in question and just basing their thoughts on reviews they've seen.
Estella/Cruella never shows any kind of real hatred towards the Dalmatians themselves. She steals them as revenge, but they're shown to be taken care of and never actually harmed. Most she does is make a bad joke about maybe turning them into a coat, but that never actually happens.
And she never blames the dogs for her mother's death. First, she blames herself, in a similar way to how Simba blamed himself for his father's death - assuming that her mother just got caught in the crossfire, since the dogs had been chasing her daughter and she got caught in the middle. And when she learns her mother was targetted, she turns her anger towards the person who sent the dogs after her mother, not the dogs themselves.
I think the marketing really screwed the movie, had it been promoted as a reimagining of Cruella or an original story about a similar woman who took a better path, instead of Cruella's backstory, I guarantee that it would've performed better. Hell, it may have even steered the rampant villain redemption stuff into villain reimagining stuff, which would've been way better!

She didnโt even do shit to the dalmations, how did this slip up like that. Theyโre alive, we see them during the burial. Itโs not two of them, itโs all three that we see. We only get the implication that she turned them into coats, because of Jasper and Artieโs song and The Baroness.
I am so sick of the trend to redeem/rationalize villainous behavior to the point where the audience is expected to sympathize with the bad guy. some people are just evil. some people are just greedy. some people just want to make coats out of dalmatians bc they think itโll look good on them. wtf is wrong with leaving it at that
You know, some people just donโt unlock their god complex until they watch their mom get killed by dalmations
Just watched Cruella and I, quite frankly, find this evil
Cruella 2021 is not bad
I think it is quite hilarious that everyone laughs at the implication that Cruella hates dalmatians because they killed her mom, while in the actual movie she not only does not harm said dogs (who were trained to kill by their previous owner), but does not use them as weapons, adopts them and cares for them. Cruella from the movie is not the OG Cruella, folks! Itโs an AU style retelling, like the Maleficent movies!
do you ever like...engage with a source material SO POORLY WRITTEN that you just redo it,,,like in your head and when you encounter others from the fandom you're just reminded that no, you have some barely remembered canon and A LOT of daydreaming....
girl im not gonna watch cruella to sympathize with the puppy skinner rich no im only here for the vibes emma stone and a good time watching a truly unsympathetic villain movie
Music in Film: Cruella (2021) dir. Craig Gillespie
I am so hyped for the Cruella De Vil movie like you have no idea!! I am a sucker for Disney villains
Here's my own headcannon. Major Spoilers Ahead!!
Estella is secretly afraid of fire after the Baroness set her home aflame and sometimes she'll have nightmares/night terrors though she would never admit it to anyone besides maybe Jasper, who will sit with her until she calms down, singing her favourite songs to her.
Fireplaces are fine as long as she is at a safe distance.
The others eventually find out and no one shames her for being scared of something.
Jasper: *Screams*
Cruella: *Screams louder to establish dominance*
Horace: Should we do something?
Artie: No, I want to see who wins.
Cruella: You lying, cheating, piece of filth!
Jasper: Oh yeah? Youโre the idiot who thinks you can get away with everything you do. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD
Cruella: Iโm leaving you, and IโM TAKING ARTIE WITH ME
Horace, picking up the monopoly board: I think weโre gonna stop playing now.
