Tanaka x Reader: Puzzle Pieces

Requested by a lovely anon: hello!! i hope you’re doing well :) tbh i’ve been having a sucky day because multiple people have commented on my short height (~4’11) all day and it’s been making me really sad, could you do tsukki and maybe tanaka (separately) comforting fem reader about their height insecurity? tysm!! <3

A/N: Hi! Thank you for requesting!! This is sooooo late (I’m so sorry) but I hope this makes up your sucky day… I chose to do Tanaka because he’s kind of underrated I feel. I’ve had a couple people ask for Tanaka stuff with no prompt so take this longer piece! I hope that’s alright <3

Genre: Fluff, comfort

Word count: 1.3k

Tanaka X Reader: Puzzle Pieces

All day you hadn’t stopped getting the comments. All day your mood had plummeted due to their basic and uncreative way of poking fun. Of course, you were used to them, but today, for some reason they hit harder. The way the same group of people would poke fun at your height irritated you, but today you had had enough.

Couldn’t they just go away?

You never aggravated it, or gave them a reason to do it, but they did. Ignoring them had gone on too long, and it hadn’t done anything. Your only escape was your boyfriend. The time you spent together distracted you, Tanaka’s energy always knowing how to cheer you up.

Slowly, you were walking home, Tanaka stalking along in front of you. He bounced with each of his words, trying to entertain you with his stories about the mischief he got into with Nishinoya. He didn’t notice the way you were slouching your walk and forcing a fake smile. You made sure to look happy whenever he turned around to make sure you were there.

“And Yuu got stuck in the net! You can imagine how mad Daichi was! I swear, he was going to kill him,” Tanka whipped around to see your fake smile, but it flew completely over his head.

You nodded with a hum, “Yeah, I can imagine, babe.”

Tanaka stopped in his tracks, arms dropping to his sides. The sudden pause of his animation made you think he had finally caught up and noticed your shift in mood.

He allowed you to catch up, Tanaka then swung his arm around your shoulders. Crushing you against his side, he cackled.

“Come on, beautiful! You’re being slow today! Are you sore or something?”

“No, my bag’s just heavier than usual,” you told a half- lie.

Half of you wanted to just tell him, craving the comfort he would treat you to in order to make you feel better and forget about the disappointments of the day. However, you wanted to see if Tanaka could notice something was off himself. Academically, sure, he wasn’t smart. But, you had hope that he had a strong intuition, being a volleyball player, and all.

Tanaka grabbed the strap of your bag, tugging it off your shoulder.

“Here,” he announced, “I’ll carry it for you. My beautiful lady deserves for her man to carry her things!”

Your bag was thrust onto his shoulder, so now only the touch of his arms around your shoulders lingered. Physically, you felt slightly relieved, and his compliment made you smile a real smile for the first time that day.

“Why so formal?” You giggled, distracting yourself from the constant bad thoughts in the back of your mind.

“Because you’re my queen!” Tanaka exclaimed loudly, kissing the top of your head.

Your flaming insecurity made you hyperaware of the way he bent down to kiss you. What stuck out the most was that it wasn’t even your lips he kissed, but the very top of your head. Your boyfriend had to bend down just to reach the highest point on your body.

You let him continue his stories all the way home, laughing occasionally to mask your feelings. Rounding the corner to his house, you found yourself falling behind again. Tanaka’s arm around your shoulder dragged you forward. Helping you up to the front door, Tanaka continued to muse you with stories.

“Welcome home!” Tanaka exclaimed, unlocking the door swinging it open.

Smiling to yourself, you let Tanaka lead you inside. Changing shoes, the two of you headed up his stairs to his bedroom. The stairs creaked slightly, Tanaka reaching for your hand.

“Come on,” Tanaka ushered you, “I know you want to study but I think we should just watch some movies and get some snacks, how about that?”

You shrugged, “I don’t mind.”

“Great!” Tanaka turned into his room and pushed you inside. He dropped your bag at the door, before turning on his heal. “I’ll go get snacks! Help yourself to my hoodies…”

Before you could protest, he had hurried down the stairs. Giggling, you searched around to find the hoodie you always wore. It was one that you made sure he didn’t wash too often so that it smelt like him whenever you put it on. Dropping to your knees, you felt around on the floor under his bed. Your fingers felt the soft fabric and you smiled. Grabbing the hoodie, you stood on your feet and stripped your shirt. You slipped into the hoodie and caught sight of yourself in the reflection of Tanaka’s mirror.

His hoodie completely ingulfed you. Normally, you’d like the feeling of being wrapped up in the scent of your boyfriend, but seeing how it dropped to your knees just reminded you of the comments that had been bouncing around you recently.

Continuing to face the mirror, you backed up against the doorframe. Placing your hand on the top of your head, you measured yourself against the wood. You stood on your tippy toes, watching as it appeared for you to grow. Tears stung your eyes as you raised your hand to measure how tall you thought Tanaka was against you.

Pitifully, you frowned at your reflection.

You ignored the footsteps that hurried back up the stairs towards you, too concentrated on the tiny figure in the mirror. Tanaka’s face popped up in the mirror beside you, sneaking his arms around your waste.

“Hey, queen Y/N…” Tanaka mumbled into your hair, “What are you looking at?”

“Oh, nothing…”

“No, you’re lying. Who said what to you?! I thought you were quiet on the way home! I swear I’ll—”

“They made fun of my height…” You mumbled, afraid that Tanaka would find the reason for your downcast face to be stupid.

Tanaka pouted, twisting you around so that he hugged to you to your chest. Suffocating in his jacket, you squeezed your eyes shut to stop the tears from flowing.

“No, Y/N, I love your height!” Your boyfriend begun swaying you, “I can squeeze you, and cuddle you, and completely ingulf you in my sweaters! You’re so cute~”

You shook your head against his chest, but he grabbed your arms and thrust them over his shoulders. Knowing what he wanted to do, you held on, allowing for Tanaka to pick you up and carry you to his bed.

“If you weren’t so small an adorable… how would I be able to do this?”

Suddenly, he tossed you onto his bed. You bounced onto the mattress, slightly annoyed but not being able to help the laugh as he approached you with his arms out.

“Hey!” You cried out, as Tanaka’s fingers found your sides.

He tickled you relentlessly, you trying to squirm away. You didn’t get far as Tanaka grabbed your ankle, dragging you across the bed. Diving onto you, Tanaka cackled.

“No!” You laughed, struggling to get away.

Even though the size different was unfair, you began to realise that you liked how he could completely engulf you. Having him with you made you feel safe, and you didn’t want to part with him.

Finally, the attack stopped once you both ran out of breath. Tanaka’s arms and legs wrapped around you, rolling you to your side. He rested his chin on your head.

“Don’t listen to anyone except me when talking about your height, you got that?” Tanaka fiddled with your hair, “Because you’re adorable and I love you.”

The tears that had once welled in your eyes and dried up completely. You were satisfied with Tanaka’s response, even though it took him a while to notice. The way you lied on his bed with his behind you  just proved how you two fit together like two puzzle pieces. Height aside, everything about the two of you being together just made sense.

(a/n: he’s so cute what)

You love waking up like this most mornings. Sweet birds singing outside your bedroom window, your thick curtains blocking out all morning sunlight. This allowed you to sleep in as long as you liked. Unless, it was one of those mornings your overactive boyfriend felt like getting out and about.

Today, it seemed that Terushima was excited to go out, bolting up from his pillow. His arm ripped from your hold. It was this disruption that woke up abruptly, but you pretended you were still asleep. When it was one of those mornings, he always found a creative way to wake you up.

“Hey, baby girl,” Terushima shook your shoulder, softly at first, “I wanna go out to the park~ Y/N.”

His fingers brushed the hair from your face, exposing your features that battled to stay still. Your eyelids cramped as you forced them to shut and bit the inside of your lip to keep a laugh from bubbling up your throat. You always struggled to stubbornly reject your boyfriend during one of those mornings.

A smirk slid onto Terushima’s face, “I know you’re trying not to smile, you suck at fake sleeping, baby.”

You fought the temptation to smile, but the corner of your lips wriggled into a smile nonetheless. Unfortunately, Terushima had found a way to win in seconds on one of those mornings.

Grumbling, you blindly reached towards him, your hand slapping onto his face.

“Hey,” Terushima warned, muffled by your hand over his mouth.

He took you by surprise, his teeth latching onto your hand. You yelped, pulling your hand away with a glare. It was one of those mornings that he caught you off guard with his antics.

“What was with that?” You wiped your hand on his shirt, faking disgust.

You knew you should have seen it coming, but Terushima snatched your hand again and blew raspberries, kissed, and bit it all over. Yelping again, you saw no other means of escape but yo fight him off you. The two of you always let loose on one of those mornings.

“I want to go to the park,” Terushima hauled you towards him as you thrashed about, “and you’re coming with me.”

“No!” You protested, twisting your wrist in a means to break free. “I will kick you if you don’t let me sleep.”

“You wouldn’t dare, honeybun.”

“Oh, yeah?”

You swung your legs about underneath the sheets, one of your feet colliding with his shin.

“Hey!”

He tugged you into his chest, pecking you on the lips. The cold metal of his tongue piercing teasing your lips. You were always defeated on one of those mornings.

Pulling away, Terushima smiled, “Didn’t put up much of a fight this morning, eh?”

“Shut up, Yuuji,” you threw the sheet off the two of you, giggling, “You pulled a dirty trick. You cheated.”

“How dare you accuse me of something so low.”

You shook your head, swinging your legs over the edge of your bed, “Well, are we going to the park?”

Turning back to face him, you drank in the sight. His messy blond hair, spiked up in all directions. That stupid shirt he wore with “skaterboy” scrawled across the chest. His beaming smile after you giving in gave you a giddy feeling you only felt during one of those mornings.

You like to call your boyfriend cute when you talk about him to your coworkers, saying things like: “He’s so cute, he cooks for me all the time!” or “My boyfriend just bought me this flower bouquet for our date! Isn’t he the cutest?” and it planted an image into your coworkers mind of your boyfriend being this soft looking guy. So they definitely didn’t expect a tall muscular guy with a face that literally embodies “if looks could kill” to walk into the building claiming to be your boyfriend and that you had asked him to pick you up. But it did help a little when you run into his arms telling how much you miss him and for a moment, they catch his hard face turned soft. Ok maybe he was a little cute.

an: I don’t think I’ll be writing haikyuu for a while but this idea whacks me in the head every now and then sooo (❍ᴥ❍ʋ)

-ˋˏ✄┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈

The wind blows, and life goes on.

The sky fades into a myriad of periwinkles and peaches, complementing an expanse of miscanthus stretching beyond the horizon which sways in the salt-kissed sunset breeze. The scenery alone would be ethereal, have it not been viewed through the hollow, doe periphery of a heartbroken blonde. As Atsumu finds himself staring into the distance, the corners of his eyes are eventually glassed with a film of tears whilst his trembling fingers tumble with a dull bracelet.

1. “Tsumu! Where are you? I thought we were supposed to go on a date at the amusement park today?”

“Damn it — sorry babe! Practice calls, and it seems like our coach isn’t planning on letting us leave any time soon. I’ll make it up to ya next time okay?” Before you could even protest, your boyfriend hung up on the call. Dismay would had been an understatement to describe how you felt at that moment: conflict, chagrin, despondence — all of which bloomed like buds deep within.

This wasn’t the first time Atsumu called off a date at the last minute, and needless to say, you weren’t pleased at all with his actions. However, in spite of the seething frustration that bubbled in your chest every time he did this to you, you reminded yourself to remain calm. You could never bring yourself to hate the blonde (or at least for now). Volleyball was a prominent part of his life, but so were you. You understood how important the sport was to Atsumu, yet with the saying being “it’s every man for himself”, a teeny bit of you hoped that he could choose his girlfriend over practice.

And with a heavy heart, you chose to put those feelings aside. After all, being his partner, shouldn’t you be unconditionally supporting Atsumu in all of his endeavours?

With the place feeling like dejá vu, it brings back faded recollections the male wishes to hold onto before they slip past his fingertips. Bit by bit, shattered fragments gradually piece themselves together, creating visages of what Atsumu would deem as his ‘sweet old days’ that he yearns to relish. Moments of you and him lying on the hill’s summit staring as remnants of tangerine and gold bask the skyline, the two of you excitedly talking about what a shared future would’ve been like, the giggles and incessant bickering that reverberate in the air like chimes whilst both of you dance under a doom of shimmering starlight — all of them come back to his mind one by one.

2. “I’m sorry y/n! I — I know I haven’t been the best boyfriend, but I’m willing to change ok? I promise I’ll spend more time with you once interhigh competitions come to an end. Please ... just wait for a little longer.”

Evident disappointment was written all over your face, and the sinking feeling that had been bugging you did nothing — but only grew stronger once you heard Atsumu’s explanation. Nevertheless, a strained grin creased your face; you simply chortled it off, reminding the blonde that it’s alright and he should focus on his volleyball competitions for the time being with a simple “Alright ... I’ll wait, Tsumu”.

To be frank, you didn’t know how long you could wait. Atsumu had been using the same reason over and over; and if you had to be honest with yourself, you were long sick of his behaviour. Of all the countless opportunities you gave your boyfriend, it felt like he took them for granted — never learning his lessons despite being forgiven repeatedly without a single complaint uttered from none other than his girlfriend.

And if he wasn’t the one to treasure the present, to cherish the bonds made and the selfless commitments devoted by you into the relationship, then why should you give him another second chance?

Twilight beckons, and a tear slips down Atsumu’s face in melancholic tranquility. Those could be called the happiest days of his entire life. Reminiscences of your smile, your touch and your laughter have long been engrained into his head, taking him on a trip down the memory lane as he thinks about you every now and then. How are you doing? Have you found someone else to replace his place in your heart? Would your mind still wander off to him? The questions throb at the back of his mind, akin to a persistent toothache. Still, the blonde knows this more than anyone else.

No matter how tormenting his regret could be, there was no way he could turn back time and make things work again. Not when the damage is done and the pain of your breakup with Atsumu still stabs him in the heart even after all these years.

In hindsight, maybe this is a lesson meant for him to learn. Perhaps he should’ve been a better lover, devoting more time into the relationship with you instead of spending most of it on volleyball. If he had prioritised you over his passion, could the heartbreak be avoided? If he had treasured his blessings, would the cicatrix in his heart remain, acting as a grim reminder of his past mistakes? In all honesty, Atsumu don’t know. It is already too late for redemption by the time the blonde opens his eyes and realises what he has done to you. Yet one thing is for sure — he shouldn’t have taken all of this for granted.

3. “I ... I don’t think this is going to work between the two of us, Tsumu.” Mustering the remaining strength you got, you decided to confront the blonde setter on a certain day. “I think ... it’s better if we end this relationship.”

To him, your confrontation bore no resemblance to a nightmare. Deafening silence lingered, wrapping its ghostly tendrils around the blonde’s neck as the grasp around Atsumu tightened with each second. Confusion wouldn’t suffice to describe the hurricane of emotions which stirred havoc inside him. Weren’t the two of you head over heels for one another a couple of months prior? What went wrong?

Happiness is, and would never be everlasting — he should’ve known that very well. Atsumu should’ve caught onto the subtle signs that set off warning bells inside his head: the chaste glances, the sudden coldness laced within your tone each time you talk, the increasing distance between you and him as the months fly by. Yet the setter is naive to say the least, failing to discern how circumstances are on the verge of spiralling down a bad turn.

4. “Wait! I ... I don’t understand. Why ... y/n?”

Your heart clenched as you heard the desperation in Atsumu’s plea, eyes evading his shocked stare; you had made up your mind, and there was no way you would be turning back. It was excruciating for things to end this way, but you had no choice. Enough was enough, you were long exhausted of this one-sided romance.

“Tsumu, I’ve had enough.” You gritted out the statement, trying your best to hold back the tears that were threatening to burst from your waterline. “Love should be mutual, and both partners should play an equal role in the relationship by devoting the same amount of time and effort into making all of this work. But is this the case between you and me?”

Instantly, Atsumu fell silent.

“For all these months I’ve endured and endured, giving my everything in a forlorn hope that our relationship would still work. I’ve given many second chances, trying to support you with everything I’ve got. But have you? Have you did anything for me in return?” Your voice began to crack, recalling how you used to sob into your pillow in the middle of the night when the blonde only cares about volleyball instead of you.

“Not everyone is willing to give a second chance ... and not everyone is willing to wait for a lifetime.”

And that was the last thing Atsumu heard before you were completely gone from his life.

A whistle in the wind pulls the blonde back into reality. As his puffy sorrel eyes interlock with the empyrean, the heart-wenching memories dissipate within an instant — followed by an exasperated sigh while Atsumu wipes falling tears off his stained cheeks.

“I must’ve been a fool ...” He begin, confessions filled with none other than inexplicable lament muttered under his breath. A multitude of constellations greet his vision; blinking and winking down at the blonde, a cynical grin is all Atsumu can manage. For once, the night sky illumined with an infinite milky belt doesn’t look so empty; at least not so — when compared to the tenebrosity of the void deep within the blonde’s heart. It reminds him of the things he had lost, the mistakes he made, and what could’ve had been a beautiful future with you had he not been the culprit who ruined it all.

“To not cherish such an amazing girlfriend, that’s so stupid of me — ugh ... why is it that we learn the pain of losing something important, when its too late for regrets? Stupid ... so stupid ...”

The wind blows, and life goes on.

The only thing Atsumu wished that hadn’t gone along with the breeze, albeit painful to hold onto, was his recollections with you.

he looks starstruck.

the stars seem to hold their breath in anticipation and freeze mid-twinkle.  it’s silent for several moments and despite the darkness, it’s the clearest you’ve ever been able to see. his eyes are wide, and a little nervous, but they’re asking quietly. it’s adorable.

there’s a delicate balance that both of you are aware could be broken by the tiniest of things. the ringing of a bell, the sound of a bike. it’s a balance you’re not sure you want to break just yet.

you have always trusted yourself to have common sense. for most of your life, you have known what to do, sometimes what to say. it’s how you had survived life thus far.

except you aren’t sure you know anything right now.

kageyama is so, so close. if you were to lean forward just a little then—

well, the balance will certainly be broken. but this is kageyama. kageyama who had been there when you needed it most, kageyama who loved and loved volleyball and more but so quietly that no one would notice if they didn’t pay attention.

and this is the kageyama you love.

you settle for resting your forehead on his. his eyes flutter shut and yours do too. you both stay like that for a while. it’s warm. this is familiar, this is safe.

this is what home feels like.

he knows that he cares for you more than he should.

and yet how can he resist? you are magnetic. you had managed to see the darkest part of him and go head to head with it. you fought it, and in the process tore down his walls irreparably.

he’ll never admit it, but he is in awe of you. he wouldn’t mind spending more time with you.

ah, but you already have tobio. you’ve already stolen perfect, talented kageyama tobio’s heart. oikawa sees the way you look at kageyama, with muted adoration and pride. you looked at oikawa with fire and something that almost resembles care. and that was all it took to make him fall.

but he would be selfish to tear you away for himself, especially when you already have a soulmate in kageyama. he wishes he could be angry at the setter, at you, and yet you are perfect for each other. he can’t.

so he settles for the teasing insults, the little compliments, and keeps his feelings locked away. you know he’s hiding something, but you don’t push. he’s glad.

it’s better this way.

“this feels familiar, doesn’t it?”

the splashes of color on the horizon, the stars rising, the moon shining. the snow blankets the ground and the park.

“yeah.”

he takes your hand in his, interlacing them. you look down at them. you’ve always marveled at how pretty kageyama’s hands were, strange as it sounds. most people who played volleyball had weathered hands, bruised arms, stiff fingers, but then again, kageyama wasn’t like most people.

“y’know, i’m glad i met you,” you confess, lifting your head from his shoulder. “and i’m glad that you stayed.”

kageyama sucks in a breath and looks down at you. you’re hit with a feeling of deja vu. the last time you had been in a situation like this, you had chickened out.

his eyes flicker down to your lips briefly.

“can i…?”

you don’t give him a verbal answer.

it’s warm.

“oh, you are cruel.”

“is that so?”

oikawa stands there in the pouring rain, giggling. you tighten them around him a little more as he clings to your jacket, to you. you can feel his breath ghosting your skin, and his face is tucked into the crook of your neck. none of this had been planned, but nothing in your life is ever planned anyways.

“you can’t just steal my heart and stand there like you did nothing,” he complains, though not without a grin. oikawa raises his head and studies your face. despite the water, his hair hasn’t flattened at all, and you would never admit it, but he looks good. “and now we’re soaked.”

“well, sorry i can’t control the weather,” you retort, almost rolling your eyes. “and i think you need some new standards if i was the thief here.”

he pecks your lips. “i think we should get somewhere dry before judging standards here.”

“y’know, for once, you’re right,” you reply, pulling away. it’s not before you take a few steps that you realize oikawa hasn’t moved from his spot, a smile on his face. “are you coming?”

he snaps out of it quickly. “yeah—“

a beat.

“of course.”
