Menschen erzählen ihre Fluchtgeschichten
Papst Franziskus hat Hunderte Geflüchtete und ihre Helfer im Vatikan empfangen. In einer überfüllten Audienzhalle begrüßte er die sogenannten Korridor-Geflüchteten und dankte allen, die ihnen geholfen haben, nach Europa zu kommen.
Der Heilige Vater hob hervor, dass es sich um eine gemeinsame Aktion der katholischen Gemeinschaft Sant'Egidio, der italienischen Caritas, der evangelischen Kirchen in Italien und mehrerer europäischer Regierung handele.
In Anwesenheit des sichtlich bewegten Papstes schilderten einzelne Geflüchtete aus Libyen und dem Libanon ihre Fluchtgeschichten. Auch Helfer, die Migranten in ihrem Haus aufgenommen haben, sprachen über ihre Erfahrungen.
Papst: Mittelmeer darf kein Friedhof werden
Der Papst betonte, dass es sich bei der Flucht über sichere Korridore um eine wichtige Alternative zum oft tödlichen Weg über das Meer handle. Man dürfe nicht zulassen, dass das Mittelmeer zu einem Friedhof werde, so der Papst.
Die Organisation von humanitären Korridoren zur Flucht aus Kriegs- und Notstandsgebieten wurde im Jahr 2016 gestartet. Nach Angaben von Helfern haben seither 6.800 Menschen auf diesem Weg Europa erreicht, unter ihnen zahlreiche Kinder. Die meisten von ihnen wurden in Italien untergebracht. Außerdem beteiligen sich Frankreich, Belgien, Andorra und die Republik San Marino an der Aktion.
Auf illegalem Weg, meist in Booten über das Mittelmeer, landeten allein im vergangenen Jahr 105.000 Migranten in Italien, im Jahr zuvor waren es etwa 60.000. Jedes Jahr ertrinken Hunderte Menschen beim Versuch, nach Europa zu gelangen.
Große Bedeutung humanitärer Korridore
In seinem Redetext, den der sichtlich erschöpfte Papst nicht vollständig vortrug, hieß es: „Diese Initiative ist in tragischer Weise aktuell und notwendiger denn je. Das zeigt auch der jüngste Schiffbruch bei Cutro. Dieser Schiffbruch durfte nicht passieren, und man muss alles unternehmen, damit er sich nicht wiederholt.“ Die humanitären Fluchtkorridore seien „Brücken, die so viele Kinder, Frauen, Männer und Alte in Sicherheit, Legalität und Würde genutzt haben. Sie überqueren Grenzen und die Mauern der Gleichgültigkeit, an denen die Hoffnung so vieler Menschen zerschellt.“
Nach seiner Ansprache schüttelte der Papst bei einer Rollstuhlfahrt durch die Menge Hunderte von Händen und machte Kindern kleine Geschenke. Humanitärer Korridor

From Greece to Germany, volunteers are joining forces to help newly-arrived refugees and migrants get food, clothes and medical attention - plugging glaring gaps in the EU’s broken asylum system while Europe’s leaders still grapple for a common solution to the growing crisis.
“There was this Syrian family: a father with a small girl. She tried to open the door of my car. I thought she must be after the food, so I asked her father what they need. ‘You have the same car as us,’ he responded, ‘but ours exploded back in Syria. Her mother died in it.’
“And then I understood what the little girl was looking for.“
Konstantinos, a volunteer, looks away as he shares this story with me. Locals on the Greek island of Kos call him ‘The Hardcore One’, because he juggles two jobs with daily deliveries of food, supplies and support for refugees.
In Australia we imprison asylum seekers indefinitely, including women and children, without trial, in concentration camps where they are assaulted, raped and murdered.
Our politicians call then “illegals” and “economic migrants” and they are demonised for political capital amongst a lazy and misinformed electorate.
Its a joy and wonder to see even a small group like this one in Hobart come out and say “Not me, not on my watch, welcome refugees, welcome to Tasmanaia!”
New research conducted by Amnesty International shows that women and girl refugees face violence, assault, exploitation and sexual harassment at every stage of their journey, including on European soil.

It’s a brilliant project, aiming to make all the great music, art, film, theatre and events happening in Nürnberg more accessible to refugees through a multilingual website and Facebook page. I’m mega happy to be able to support such a great project with this poster campaign!

I realise tumblr has probably been flooded with posts like this, but I wanted to make my own, when I saw the above comic by OneMillionMouths, which really resonated with me in regards to this issue. People are naturally empathetic, you just need to change their perspective and get their attention.
1) ‘Perceptions & Reality: Public Attitudes to Immigration’ - Bobby Duffy & Tom Frere-Smith (January 2014), Recent report on British attitudes to Immigration.
2) Katie Hopkins, prominent British tabloid columnist and ‘deluded lunatic’ (her words), publishes a piece of hate speech in a national newspaper describing refugees as ‘cockroaches’. In a following LBC interview, she states ‘I would use gunships’ to deter fleeing refugees. (Monday 20th April 2015)
3) Photos of drowned 3-year-old refugee Alan Kurdi are taken by Nilüfer Demir, (Wednesday 2nd September 2015)
4) Within 24 hours, the image has spread across the world and internet, prompting passionate and fierce debate over the refugee crisis. The Independent UK, The Telegraph. There is a global outpouring of grief and empathy. The Independent (UK) starts a #RefugeesWelcome campaign. (Thursday 3rd September 2015)
5) The Sun Newspaper (which previously published the ‘cockroaches’ article) does dramatic U-turn and starts ‘For Aylan’ campaign, still manages to propose bombing Syria as a solution two days later. (Friday 4th September 2015)
6) British PM David Cameron announces UK to accept 20,000 more refugees. (Monday 7th September 2015)
7) The UK Marches in Solidarity with Refugees. (Saturday 12th September 2015)
8) Government Petition for UK to accept more refugees has amassed 438,312 signatures. Thus meeting criteria of 100,000 signatures to be debated in Parliament. Official Gov response has been posted from the Home Office (Last accessed: Wednesday 16th September 2015)
