ONE PICTURE CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING: Changing British Attitudes Towards the Refugee Crisis

Below is a timeline of how the image of Alan Kurdi transformed the British response to the refugee crisis overnight. (With Lots of Pictures)
I realise tumblr has probably been flooded with posts like this, but I wanted to make my own, when I saw the above comic by OneMillionMouths, which really resonated with me in regards to this issue. People are naturally empathetic, you just need to change their perspective and get their attention.
1) ‘Perceptions & Reality: Public Attitudes to Immigration’ - Bobby Duffy & Tom Frere-Smith (January 2014), Recent report on British attitudes to Immigration.
2) Katie Hopkins, prominent British tabloid columnist and ‘deluded lunatic’ (her words), publishes a piece of hate speech in a national newspaper describing refugees as ‘cockroaches’. In a following LBC interview, she states ‘I would use gunships’ to deter fleeing refugees. (Monday 20th April 2015)
3) Photos of drowned 3-year-old refugee Alan Kurdi are taken by Nilüfer Demir, (Wednesday 2nd September 2015)
4) Within 24 hours, the image has spread across the world and internet, prompting passionate and fierce debate over the refugee crisis. The Independent UK, The Telegraph. There is a global outpouring of grief and empathy. The Independent (UK) starts a #RefugeesWelcome campaign. (Thursday 3rd September 2015)
5) The Sun Newspaper (which previously published the ‘cockroaches’ article) does dramatic U-turn and starts ‘For Aylan’ campaign, still manages to propose bombing Syria as a solution two days later. (Friday 4th September 2015)
6) British PM David Cameron announces UK to accept 20,000 more refugees. (Monday 7th September 2015)
7) The UK Marches in Solidarity with Refugees. (Saturday 12th September 2015)
8) Government Petition for UK to accept more refugees has amassed 438,312 signatures. Thus meeting criteria of 100,000 signatures to be debated in Parliament. Official Gov response has been posted from the Home Office (Last accessed: Wednesday 16th September 2015)
Humanity.
I was watching the movie Hugo today and its set in the 1930s where movies were really REALLY new. Ngl, I now notice, it is very hard to please people nowadays compared to the past. In the past, people were even amazed by the losing the thumb trick. Now, you can jump over 3 moving cars, scale Mt everest, hell, be the first person to touch the sun safely. And people would say: [yawn] I've seen that before. or. I coudl do that.
The only hope we have is in the youth, as they haven't seen that much and though I sound like a boomer, I am not. I'm just saying the truth.
We need MORE people to be amazed even by the littlest things.
i love my neighborhood so dearly bc ive known these people my whole life and we’re all family!! so i know that whenever i lock my car (i have to lock it five times, and it beeps every time) i know theyre not annoyed about it because they know that it means i’m home and safe :] anywhere else im worried about disturbing others but when i’m home i know that if anyone notices the “HONK HONK HONK HONK HONK”, they’ll feel good knowing im safe at home
For the second year, my daughter Wateen has been denied her right to education.
Where are the children's rights that we constantly speak of?
How can her fundamental right to a brighter future be ignored?

This is getting exhausting.
You feel it too, don’t you? Our planet is choking beneath the weight of a sky that grows heavier with every airplane, every rocket, every exhale the dwindling trees can’t catch. She is drowning beneath her oceans, falling deeper with every melted iceberg.
The news repeats in cycles. More fires. More storms. Stronger storms. Too much pollution. Too much destruction. And we’re not doing enough.
Instead we watch from the receding shores as our beloved planet plummets into disrepair.
Humans aren’t all bad, I suppose. There are some of us trying to save pockets of the world as we continue to infect it. Parasites. Maybe that’s all we are in the end. Parasites that think we can conquer the land that raised us, that gave us the semblance of control that we now turn back with fire and drilling and plastic pollutants. But we can’t stop time, can’t turn back the destruction we’ve wrought fast enough and now it might be too late.
We’re selfish, and this is our fault. We drag the planet down, ruin her and deny it for personal gain as if we are actually significant to the universe, and we drag each other down too. There is no survival with a hostile humanity. Not for us, not for our tortured planet. Not for her animals, not for her forests, not for her oceans.
She’s exhausted. And I’m exhausted of watching.

Highlights from Monday's event - chalk hearts, love bench, kind humans doing beautiful things, and a bit of squirrel-feeding therapy. Huge thanks for @stuartsemple and @maxreestore for highlighting the issue and creating something so special; to @bournemouthcouncil for removing the offending bars so quickly; to my children for being superstars despite the cold; to @jagovision for the photos. And to everyone who came, stopped for a chat, listened, wrote messages, and signed the petition. There is still so much to do to help homeless people.
