The Truman Show (1998, with Jim Carrey), in my opinion is basically a comedy about existential horror.

Was Nothing Real?

“Was nothing real?”

Here are two variations I created based off the iconic scene from The Truman Show where Truman finds the end of his world and finally manages to escape. Upon deciding which still to use for reference, I chose the one I did because I felt as though the moment Truman decides to ascend the staircase, but not touch the wall, was a more poetic gesture to capture. It is not him coming to hard material terms and realisations about the nature of his world just yet; rather it is the moment of inquiry. The decision to go on without fully know what lies ahead. Reminiscent of Plato’s allegory of the cave, the moment a person decides to follow their curiosity rather than instruction or tradition, is perhaps the most significant moment of all, regardless of what they find on the other side.

The Truman Show - just some thoughts.

The Truman Show - Just Some Thoughts.

Although I've seen this film many times, there's something so captivating and alluring about this film that I always find myself coming back to it. The very prospect of the film is genuinely terrifying, where a man is being stalked by millions of people daily who cannibalize his very existence without knowledge of this. A notion that we see daily in our modern lives.

Everyone is constantly being documented and surveyed; CCTV, social media, videos, photos, etc. Any moment, public or private, could be made for someone else's gratification or even their own content - much like Christof's views on The Truman Show (seriously stop filming random people, TikTok is rotting our brains into thinking that it's an okay thing to do).

If we as people are consistently being documented while also documenting ourselves - where do entertainment and reality become two separate entities? We almost become the Truman in our own reality.

The Truman Show - Just Some Thoughts.

One of my favourite parts of the film is the feature of the pin that Sylvia wears, "How's it going to end?". You often hear this question in relation to consuming media, when a show is gripping you yearn to know how it ends and we can see this parallel through our lives through a philosophical lens, how is our life going to end?

Truman's life is monotonous and barren, in his mind he knows how it ends - he stays married and dies of old age. But living is about taking risks, the moments of joy and despair, the unexpected, and the absolute humanity. Truman realises at the end when he ascends the staircase towards the exit, he doesn't want to know and he understands that this artificial 'perfect' life isn't real, it's fiction.

A lot of people make fun of or just don't understand people who don't read books. And I get it, I get all the reasons people well read don't get why someone wouldn't read

But I feel the same way about movies and video games too, and I don't see that discussed as much

They've never seen Truman bow and step through that door

Or Andy craw his way from hell

Or John drop the man holding Nakatomi Plaza hostage out a window

Or Bloom come to realize his brother is dead

And they've never felt the chilling screens of Ravenholm

Or the sense of pride following a full binding pantheon

Or fear at your helpless to the system that will set you free

Or the tragedy of a screaming woman stuffed in a machine

I just feel those who she experience games and movies are missing out just as much as those who don't read

i'm just curious bc i'm watching How to Train Your Dragon and i always forget how happy and calm it makes me feel. i mean, i did name my cat after Toothless the dragon. but i also love Lion King, that's my Disney comfort movie. and my Ghibli comfort movie is Spirited Away. watching any of these when i'm in a foul mood or my anxiety is high always helps 🥰 but i watch them just for fun too, not only when i'm in a mood. what about you?

No one is talking about it but holy crap is Asteroid City good!

After watching the trailer the first time I was sold by the 1970s postcard aesthetic to the set design, and I had little idea of what the main theme or genre was.

Truman Show-esc in the script, each scene was amazingly written. I want to rewatch the movie a few more times to understand everything I didn't get the first time.

No one else was in the theatre

Which was disappointing since this movie was so good, but with Spider-man: Across the SpiderVerse playing, no one else was in the crowd.

Spoiler Warning:

Below is a video my friend took. Mind you there's 3 of us in the theatre and we all went together.

Make sense of it because I can't, it took us completely out of left field.

Love the flash of empty seats in front of us.

Go out and see the movie it's an experience you need to experience.

Imagine a Hatchetfield AU where Paul is in a Truman Show scenario. Hatchetfield is a completely fictional place built from the ground up, all for him, and he has no clue as he goes about his day as some bland business guy. He's always reminded me of Truman so, I think something like that would be interesting to think about through the lens of the Hatchetverse.

"Duvarı yıkmaya gücüm yetmiyorsa kendimi parçalayacak değilim elbette. Ama önümde duvar var diye boyun eğmeyi de kabullenemem." Der ya Fyodor Dostoyevski Yeraltından Notlar'ında. Truman Show için hazırlanmış bir söz gibi gelir bana hep...
