The 'Healthy' Couples

I thought of this a few days ago and wanted to put this up but I realized how all the established couples in Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss that are meant to be healthy and stable... become problematic later on. Like, even though it's obvious the two involved in a couple love each other, it doesn't take away the problems that end up forming regardless of that love. So far, I'm thinking of three canon 'healthy' couples so I'll just talk about them. Also, I'd like to give credit for a youtuber named Sarcastic Chorus because I like listening to his videos and I thought he had good points. I'm bound to word them in my own way since I would up agreeing with Chorus

Millie and Moxxie. Yeah, this is the first couple we really followed, especially when Helluva Boss made way, and they became problematic over time. Their relationship consists of nothing more than Moxxie doing big, romantic gestures for Millie, Millie protecting Moxxie from physical danger if she happens to be there, and those two being attached at the hip. And as for the middle thing, yeah, I put physical danger because Millie does fuck all whenever friends and family insult them. I'm not counting the angry glares and dirty faces because it's not like they're actually effective at getting her husband's bullies to stop picking on Moxxie. Finally, it's seriously sad that Millie and Moxxie don't have much in the ways of family and especially friends (a point I wanna bring up while I'm here). For Moxxie, his family is just his parents and one of them is dead. The mafia members only count as family as people who do crime together so no to them. Then there's Millie's family, which consists of a mom, dad, and a bunch of siblings. Except Millie never mentions them both before and after Harvest Moon Festival and she still lets them get away with treating her husband like shit. Then again, it's worse in the case of their 'friends', who are just Blitzo and Loona. It truly sounds sad to me that there's no indication that Millie and Moxxie ever hang out with anyone outside of I.M.P. or even try to. As a result, Loona and Blitzo, Moxxie's daily bullies, are the closest to friends that this married couple has and of course Millie lets them get away with the shit they do to her husband even though it should be less hard with them than with family. If anyone brings up that Millie and Moxxie will lose their jobs, well, there's always job hunting, which neither of them ever seem to do

Fizzarolli and Asmodeus. Since their characterization seems to differ from episode to episode that they appear in - to me, anyways - I think I can sum it up like this. Ozzie's protectiveness makes Fizz feel like he's being smothered and Fizz gets undermined quite a bit. Like how he's insistent on going to the pageant and Ozzie hires Blitz to talk Fizz out of it, I think it made Fizz feel like he can't handle things on his own. Granted, he was written bizarrely sensitive in that episode (I guess I might as well get to that on another post on a later date) but it's like, has Ozzie ever thought about asking Fizz what he wanted before just doing his own thing? Sure, Ozzie pampers him, praises him, and all that, and if Fizz is the kind to let others take the lead, that's all fine and dandy. However, I think that, even if you're the kind to let others lead and take care of you, you still want things. You still want independence. So I can imagine how frustrating it must be that you never seem to be able to really make your own choices. I don't think there's been an instance so far that Fizz was able to do what he wanted without having to debate Ozzie over it or charm him with puppy dog eyes first. Even though Fizz needed to get away from his horrible work environment, especially since he'll definitely have Ozzie by the end of the day, but Blitzo and Ozzie still seemed a little too take-charge of Fizz that it's like they think they can just tell him what they want of him. Really, all this was just tolerable because Fizz's strangely gung-ho for a stressful situation that he didn't need to be in to start with and that Blitzo and Ozzie just kept their attempts at talking him out of it. There's also the fact that Fizz doesn't seem to have anyone other Ozzie and Blitzo so his social life is severely clipped despite Fizz being a celebrity. Really, that's a problem that couples 1 and 2 seem to have, that their work lives and romance lives are directly intertwined. As unfair as it might be to some couples, there's a reason why people don't want relationships between coworkers and there's especially a reason why people don't want relationships between bosses and their employees

Charlie and Vaggie. So this is bound to be an unpopular opinion but, throughout the show, I kept thinking that Charlie was a grown up child who had a babysitter instead of a girlfriend. Charlie never listened to Vaggie on anything, never took her into consideration at any point (barring their fight or whatever in episode 7), and apparently didn't know a thing about her. Yeah, the past as an exterminator angel is a big secret that obviously Vaggie isn't going to want to tell Charlie, but then I hear that they've been dating for three years. Who dates someone for three years and never wonder about their past or their background? I don't mean doing a freaking background check, either, like if someone wanted to adopt a child. What I mean is, don't people who love each other naturally want to know more about each other? Yet Charlie never wondered about that concerning Vaggie before? Then again, when Vaggie tried lying to get out of going to Heaven, Charlie actually never asked why she would do that to begin with. Then it's not any better on Vaggie's end. She got kicked out of heaven, abandoned in Hell, left for dead, so everything familiar to her is gone. Charlie's the closest bit of heaven that Vaggie's got left so that probably makes it that she wants to protect it with everything she's got. Not just protect but pamper and coddle, too. Otherwise, Vaggie might have issue with Charlie caring more about Vaggie messing up the performance of trust exercises than the fact that Vaggie fell on her ass on the floor or that Charlie legitimately behaved a lot like a toddler in episode 4. Even then, their relationship consists not much more than reassurances and comfort from one side to another

It's funny how these healthy relationships still end up having problems once the story expands enough. Really, they just look healthy and it's just on the first appearance of the couple. Like maybe there could turn out to be problems between Ralphie and Martha but we won't know because they're bound to not show up ever again past the first episode of Helluva Boss. So for now, Ralphie and Martha are just a healthy couple because we have only one episode of them to work with

At least I'm happy for these unintentional problems that the writers created for these couples because it means that we the fans can fix them with fanfiction

My Gripes with the Midseason Special

Yep, another post that I put down my less-than-favorable feelings about Helluva Boss. This time, it'll be about the currently latest episode, the Midseason Special. As always, any fans who love it as is should stay away from this post

So I had my gripes for a while and I finally got around to writing it down. The bummer about this is, it's actually something I would have loved seeing but I got bogged down by the spectacularly bad writing that is Helluva Boss by then. A heavy focus on Asmodeus and Fizzarolli, especially together, and minimal showcasing of Blitzo. (I don't think I'm alone in thinking that he really should have just stayed in the flashback but at least he didn't get shoved in too much outside of it)

Although Blitzo's actual screentime outside the flashback did get to me. First off, him taking his sweet fucking time shooting the entitled, creepy asshole. Seriously, he was there for freaking security; yeah, Ozzie intended Blitzo to talk Fizz out of continuing to work for Mammon but he was supposed to be security, especially as far as Fizz knew.

Yet Blitzo never shot the bastard when he started trash talking Fizz. He never shot the bastard when Fizz was very clearly having a panic attack as the rant went on. Blitzo never even shot the bastard when he gave a damn warning that he would. No, he just flat out punches the creep instead. That feels so lame! And of course, Blitzo let that creep kick the door down to Fizz's dressing room with a knife in his hands. Why would Blitzo let it get that far?

What makes all that even worse is that Blitzo was able to shot a dirty humper off Fizz while they were swooshing around in the air so you know for a fact that Blitzo was more than capable of shooting the creep before he even laid a hand or foot on the damn door. It was like the writers just wanted Blitzo to see Fizz and Ozzie be all lovey-freaking-dovey with each other and do the hypocrites joke on them

Honestly, the fact that Blitzo was so incompetent about shooting this one asshole made me feel pissed off to see Blitzo being caring for Fizz. Seriously, he had the freaking gall to ask if Fizz is okay when he let the creep trash-talk Fizz for as long as he did

That's my biggest gripe with Blitzo in the episode but I did get annoyed at him for that dirty joke at the end because why wouldn't a Helluva Boss episode end with some dirty joke if not melodramatic moment or someone being an unfunny jerkass for the sake of an ending joke? (Seriously, I started building up a decent opinion on Blitzo in Exes and Oohs, only for Blitzo to thoroughly tear it down to smithereens with that last line of his in Unhappy Campers. I seriously hate that I'm stuck with that asshole as the main character as I weather it out for my actual favorites)

My other biggest gripe is, unfortunately, Fizzarolli. Because the thing is, as much as I hated that Blitzo was forgiven by Fizz and that flashback so weakly establishing what beef they had for each other, I did enjoy Fizz's characterization in that episode. I loved that Fizz was a non-combative who needed to be protected from physical danger but he didn't let that stop him from being so damn mouthy and sassy. Seriously, Fizz was duct taped by the fucking Mafia and was threatened by Striker and Fizz still had the guts to call Striker 'fuck face' and heavily imply that his breath was bad. Even then, when he got on the field - so to speak - Fizz still did whatever he could to protect himself. He tried that horn thing he used on Ozzie in the morning, he tried using a banana peel, he ran with as much gusto as possible, and he readily provided a distraction for Blitzo to do his thing. Fizz was amazing! Even though he didn't know how to fight, even though he wasn't good at fighting, Fizz didn't let that stop him from fighting back however he could or from surviving and I loved that.

Then the Midseason Special happens and Fizz is so bizarrely sensitive all of a sudden. He was so non-combative and sensitive that it kept me thinking back to the last episode and wonder 'why is this different for Fizz? Why can he mouth off the fucking mafia but not a random asshole who clearly doesn't have a life?' My feisty jester who didn't let being physical weak stop him from fighting however he could is gone! Seriously, how am I supposed to enjoy a characterization that Stolas has already owned since the beginning of fucking season 2!?

I don't mean any disrespect for people who gone through what Fizz did in the Midseason Special, just so you know. What I have a problem with is that it's specifically Fizz who's the way that he is in this episode. I can get Fizz not being able to do a thing about Mammon, deadly sin and all, but why is he letting this random asshole get to him this much this easily? And Glitz and Glam, for that matter. Why is Fizz just letting him be bitches off stage? Season one Fizz or even just the Fizz from the very last episode wouldn't let it slide, regardless of preparations to beat them in the competition

The last gripe I could have is that Fizz and Ozzie are too soft for my taste now. It's like Millie and Moxxie if both sides were male and they actually get a conflict with some meat to it in an episode they star in, even if the conflict's definitely going to be resolved by the end. Anyways, I was okay with how their relationship was like in Oops but then the Midseason Special happens and now it's too sweet that it legit feels like cringe to me. It actually makes me miss the season 1 portrayals, where Fizz and Ozzie seemed like a villainous couple who not only enjoyed each other's company but also enjoyed being villainous together. They were an awful couple who was more awful to everyone around them but completely loving or at least caring towards each other. That was great! I would have wanted to see that! I'd still want to see the Fizzmodeus show over the Stolitz one but they're still way too sugary sweet

This ship is so cute! Even tho these two are pretty sexualized in the show (Fizz being a model for a sex doll and Asmodeus being the Lust god or whateva (honestly don't know if Asmo is sexualized but because of his name and status ppl expect a certian personality from him like what we saw in S1: ep 5)), their relationship is really wholesome and I love it so much.

Also, love this art for Fizzarolli cooking. It's very vague in the show when it's mentioned that he can't cook, but I imagined just like this!

Welcoming the end of the day, you laid relaxed and especially comfy on the couch with Fizzarolli snuggled up on top of you. You were watching your favorite comfort show on TV, listening to the distant sound of Asmodeus humming and shuffling around in the next room over. "Is anyone hungry? I'm thinking of making burgers~" he suggests, peeking his head around the corner with his eyebrows wiggling suggestively. 

Fizzarolli, who gasps excitedly, almost launches himself off the couch when he shoots up from his position. You fling your arms out to hold him steady by his hips as he bounces in your lap with a raised hand. "Ooo! Me me me me!" You grunt as he almost knocks the wind out of you. "I think he wants burgers," you giggle out jokingly. He sticks his tongue out at you and you return the childish gesture, earning a chuckle from Asmodeus. "Alright alright! So that makes two burgers." He then calls your name in a gentle voice, "Would you like one? I can make you something else too if you'd like…?"

Before you realize, you're blurting out, "Oh no, I'm okay! I already ate." Asmodeus hums in thought. "Well, what did you have to eat?" You swallow. Technically you DID eat today, just earlier…

"I had the leftovers from last night! They were so yummy even a day later!" Now why did you feel the need to say that? You tried to give him your most convincing grin, knowing you were lying straight through your teeth. He watched you carefully for a moment. The pause silence was enough to even calm Fizzarolli down, now both of them eyeing you suspiciously. Asmodeus sighs in defeat and makes his way into the kitchen. "Alright, well let me know if you change your mind. You know I’ll make anything you want, baby." 

Once Asmodeus is back in the kitchen, Fizzarolli's focus shifts back to you. His hands settle on your tummy as he straddles you. "Babeee," He calls to you teasingly. You give him a smile and call back to him in a similar tone,  "Yes babeee?" When he leans down to give you peck on the lips, you giggle and reach up to tug on his shirt, pulling him in closer to kiss you again. The temperature in the room seems to skyrocket as the kiss quickly gets more heated. You pull away briefly to catch your breath, only for him to chase you back into the kiss.

 Keeping your lips connected he maneuvers his legs between yours and slides his hands along your thighs. Grabs the backs of your knees, he slowly pushes you into a mating press and grinds himself against you. You gasp at the feeling of his hardon dragging against your core, trying your best to match his rhythm in your position. He pulls away and begins  kissing along your jaw, continuing to move your hips together. "Mmm baby, tell me something..". You offer him a whiny ‘mhm’ at the sound of his gruff voice. "What all DID you eat today?" He asks matter of factly. Confused, you let out a breathy 'what?' in response as you lift your hips against him, seeking more of his touch.

He murmurs the question again into your neck, pulling away just enough to see your reaction. You look up at him as he continues to hump himself against you, making you moan out softly, "mm...what do you mean?" He pauses for a moment, leaning down to give you a slower, sweeter kiss, then sits up, still holding your thighs. "I meaaan, what all did you have to eat today? You SAID you ate earlier, but what did you have?"  You blink up at him slowly before answering, "I told you guys I had left ov-" He cuts you off. "I know what you said…”, His voice starts to get quiet, more careful. “But I also know that's not true..." 

Shit. But how would he know that...? "I-I'm not sure what you-" he cuts you off again. "Babes, I ate the rest of the leftovers this morning for breakfast." You swallow and shift uneasily under him, even as his finger run comforting circles along your thigh. "So what did you actually eat today?" He asks again gently. You avert your eyes and laugh awkwardly, already knowing how this conversation was going to go. "Well, I had an iced coffee and one forth of a cookie this morning...hey, don't look at me like that!" He covers his face, fighting a smile "I’m sorry! I wasn’t looking at you any type of a way..." You grumble back, "You were...anyway I was..." A pause.. "...busy today so i forgot about lunch, but as soon as I got home I had some soup and crackers.."

"Babe, you came home with Ozzie at 11 this morning. It’s now 9 o'clock at night. " He says in a scolding tone. "Mhm yeah, I don't wanna talk about this anymore. I'd rather you kiss me," you say dismissively. Stretching your arms out, you make grabbing motions with your hands towards him. Fizzarolli leans back from your touch, making you frown and drop your arms. "Hun, you NEED to eat. And I don’t mean just coffee or soup either. You need REAL food! You can't take care of your body properly if you're not getting the right nutrition. Trust me, I know more than anyone how hard it is, but you'll only make yourself sick..." 

You know he's only trying to help you, but you can't help but feel defensive and snap back. "I DO eat Fizzarolli and I'm perfectly fine! I don't need you talking to me like I'm some child or something, telling me what to do." He falls backwards as you suddenly sit up and move off the couch, storming away into the hallway. As he sits in shock for a moment, trying to process how things escalated so quickly, Asmodeus peeks around the corner. "...Is everything alright in here?" He asks, eyebrows knitted together in worry. Asmodeus watches as Fizzarolli throws himself on the couch and lets out a muffled yell into the cushion. He then sits up and sighs, "I ate yesterday's leftovers." Frowning, Asmodeus crosses his arms. “What do you mean? I thought baby said-" 

"Yeah well baby lied. And on top of that they barely ate anything today! I just-," he takes in a shaky breath, wringing his hands together. "I'm just worried, ya know? I know what it's like...I don't want baby going through that..."

Meanwhile, in the room you're sprawled out in bed, yelling into the pillow you have squished on your face. You then lay still for a moment, trying to calm yourself down your heavy breathing. You do find some comfort in the softness of the pillow, using it as an attempt to hug your problems away. The click of the bedroom door opening and the soft call of your name has you holding your breath. Light footsteps make their way to the bed, and you hear and feel the springs make way for someone else. 

You hear your name again and surrender when the pillow is moved from your face. Asmodeus gives you a knowing smile and moves to prop himself up next to you. "Sweetheart," he starts, wrapping an arm around you. "Do you wanna tell me what happened?” You don’t immediately decline, mulling over the previous conversation with your other partner in your head. “I dunno… I just got upset I guess…I really didn’t mean to yell at Fizz…” You roll to face away from him and he pulls you closer. “I know you didn’t mean it…I think he knows that too.” He kisses the top of your head. “You know you shouldn’t miss meals hun, we’ve talked about this before. Froggy and I..we’re just worried about you because we love you.” 

You can’t help the tears that threaten to fall, nor the soft sniff of your nose that breaks the silence in the room. “I’m sorry…” The arms around you tighten and you find yourself tucked under Asmodeus’s chin. “It’s okay baby...” He murmurs comfortingly. “We’re here for you every step of the way.” You both stay cuddled like that for some time before he suggests rejoining Fizzarolli since he had been eating alone. Reluctantly you agree, gathering yourself and making your way into the kitchen. 

To your surprise, there were only two place settings at the table, one where Asmodeus sat down to eat and the other where Fizzarolli was sitting. You sit down in a chair next to them and look over to Fizzarolli. “Hi…” you speak to him shyly. He raises an eyebrow and gives you a gentle smile. “Hi…” He responds. Asmodeus interestedly watches you to share your awkward exchange, biting into his food.

Ready to peel off the bandaid, you begin to apologize, not for forgetting to eat, but for speaking to your partner harshly when he was only trying to express his concern. Fizzarolli listens and offers you the same, knowing that it’s a sensitive topic for you. After you talk things through, he asks if you’d like a hug, which you accept graciously. When you sit back down you notice Fizzaroli cutting into his burger with a fork and knife. Odd. 

He takes a small piece and turns to you, suddenly making train sounds. “Choo choo choo! Here comes the train!” You stare at him dumbly as the fork moves closer to your lips. “Open wideeee!” Rolling your eyes, you let out a laugh and open your mouth, taking the fork in your mouth. He grins looking between you and Asmodeus as you slowly chew the food, preparing another forkful for you. Asmodeus coos from the other side of the table, watching you take another bite. “Good job baby, if you can finish some more we can have WHATEVER you want for dessert~”  

I think I figured out why I like Fizzarozzie more than you do, I actually do see all relationships as transactions, at least to an extent.

It's a big part of the reason I kin Mammon, granted I also consider the emotional aspect as part of the "transaction", extracting value from a fun or otherwise valuable experience with someone else (something I incorporate into my Mammon writing), but I would say Blitz and Ozzie are evenly matched in that regard, at least in Fizz's eyes as of the mid-season finale (I know you'll disagree with this, but this is my final stance on the matter).

Realistically speaking, I probably wouldn't care about Blitz if I was in Fizz's position and had Ozzie. I'm not saying my opinion is the be all end all of this discussion, but I just thought it would be useful to get this perspective out there.

That twitter post is so dumb. Saying Blitzo doesn't have anything to offer to the table that Oz doesn't? What about a personality? That's a start. He isn't perfect so Fizz would actually have some ability to be his own person and character since Blitzo isn't capable of being everything always all the time. It's a better relationship because it's more grounded as a whole and also just a better story.

I hate that thread if it’s the one I’m thinking of. Maybe if you let characters interact for more than one episode a dynamic could be established? Notice how it’s also implying that blitz and Asmodeus are remarkably similar in their protective caring dynamic with him ? Seems like he was the blueprint

I think this show has just hardwired everyone into seeing all relationships as a transaction. Oz has a big bank account and a nice house what does blitz have? Checkmate.

Blitz offers him, and always has offered him loyalty, protection, reassurance and a feeling of safety. He lets Fizz yell and show when he’s annoyed without feeling like he has to cushion his words, he doesn’t have to say “pweeease?” And pretend to be all submissive and cute to get what he wants. People pleasers need someone who isn’t biassed by a need to benefit off of them, to give it to them straight. Ozzie doesn’t offer him that because fizz only thinks Ozzie is with him because of who he is at his best, meaning he’s been putting up a front with Asmodeus, and he feels like it’s thanks to Mammon that he got to be with him. He says he barely feels worthy.

Another thing I had to laugh at is. Fizz doesn’t like he blitz talks too much. And it shows fizz’s annoyed expression. Um. You may as well be talking about “if you keep talking about pirates I will punch you” they have a back and forth. Fizz keeps him in check. He also doesn’t like how Oz pampers him too much and makes decisions without telling him. In both episode six and seven of season two of you pay attention, Fizzarolli and Asmodeus are actually arguing almost the entire time. Because two people can disagree and that isn’t grounds for ending things.

People who knew you and loved you before you were famous are irreplaceable. It’s more than ‘nostalgia’ and ‘some solidarity in that they’re both imps or whatever’ it’s community, history, belonging, and understanding. And that last one means the most to fizz.

And you’re right it is also just a better story

The second I saw this I just bolt right up and HAD to draw it. As my fist comic this took me SO much longer that it needed to -_-
