The Witcher Netflix Review

Netflix’s The Witcher series starts with a bang. Everything within the world comes crashing down. Nilfgard has attacked and overtaken Cintra and Ciri has barely escaped with her life with the goal to find the man her grandmother told her about Geralt of Rivia. The first episode immediately pulled me in and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen in this story and world. The final two episodes made everything come full circle and I was left wanting more. Especially with the cliffhanger ending that episode eight left off on.

The series juggles three timelines with Ciri, Geralt, and Yennefer at the focus of each of their own timelines. Ciri’s timeline happens mainly after the fall of Cintra. Geralt’s timeline chronicles how he came to become Ciri’s fate. And Yennefer’s tells the story of an unwanted and powerless girl becoming a powerful and confident sorceress. All storylines were well told and got me to care for each individual character. I cheered when they succeeded and was sad when they failed. All three were well cast and now that I’ve seen their portrayals in the show I can’t imagine anyone else playing these parts.

Netflix clearly didn’t take any shortcuts with the production of the Witcher. All of the technical aspects look top notch. The CGI looks fantastic for a television series.The cinematography is also very gorgeous. The timelines and places are easily distinguishable from one another through lighting, filters, and set design. I never got one place mixed up with another. 

I did think there were a few moments that were slow. They probably could have cut some content to tighten up the episodes a bit more. Episode five was the weakest of the eight episode series, but it did contain some relationship building that did affect the characters moving forward. Overall these weren’t that major because the show typically moved at a pretty brisk pace with important story of character beats happening fairly often.

I recommend this show for both fans and newcomers. Fans will enjoy seeing their favorite characters adapted for the screen and newcomers will not be lost in the world and will come to understand the characters and their stories well.

Okay but, am I the only one who like the idea of The Witcher (Netflix) being like the Netflix show “Castlevania” ?

Just a small warning for people who either haven’t seen The Witcher or Castlevania, there will be spoilers and such, and I heavily suggest giving both a good watch, trust me it’ll be worth your time.

I love the idea of Geralt being a Witcher and Jaskier being the oh so attractive bard, but I also can’t help myself placing them in the world and setting of Castlevania. Hear me out, hear me out—

Geralt being a Belmont? Not the last, having Lambert, Eskel and Vesemir (along with other Witchers if I’m forgetting some) being the only Belmont’s left alive after the purging of them. Geralt just, y’know, likes to be alone is all. Well, that was until coming upon a small village for coin so he can settle. Upon being there, hunting for jobs and asking around, I do full on expect him to come across Speakers.

Now, in Castlevania, The Speakers are a group of nomad scholars who maintain oral stories and traditions. They are persecuted by the Church, who see them as sorcerers and responsible for Dracula's wrath (this small paragraph is from the Castlevania wiki explaining Speakers). I would like to think that, yes, in this mixed world, Dracula is indeed taking over the world from it killing his wife, and I will explain more of that later. But for now, the speakers I’m thinking about are more.... of singers? Not all of them, but young ones. Geralt does stumble upon them, hearing about a speaker who sings gets his attention and then he meets Jaskier.

Julian (who goes by Jaskier) is the youngest of the Speakers, and he is very bright in this dark little world. Going with Geralt after a long fight with creatures, Geralt learns that not only does this Bard like Speaker only carry information from village to village, he can cast spells and is excellent in helping Geralt heal. At first, Geralt doesn’t like the non-stop talking of the speaker, but by the next village, he does learn how smart the Speaker is. He puts in good word for the Belmont’s, sings of them, and Geralt is secretly thankful.

Now, back to Dracula. We can’t keep Ciri out of the mix, being a Child surprise and all, so I would like to think that instead of Alucard, there is Ciri. I know of the games and have heard of the books of The Witcher, but I don’t know a lot about either of them enough to know what Ciri is like in each, so I’ll stick with the nextflic version. Instead of grown up Ciri, I’ll stick with tiny Ciri, escaping the war broken out with Dracula and the world, and searching for the ‘hero’ Belmont who hunts vampires (and more). When she does come across him, she’s also happy to see a speaker who is more than happy to calm her with a song or two.

“Can we get a dog?” Geralt hums from where he’s working on the sofa, Ciri looking up at him with Roach in her hands.

“Why? Is Roach not cutting it anymore?” She gasps, holding the stuffed horse protectively to her chest.

“Don’t listen to him Roach, I could never get bored of you.” Jaskier nods solemnly from the other side of the couch, hiding his smile behind his notebook with the pretense of adding the final touches to his song. In reality, he’s waiting for The Cue.

“Good advice, Geralt has no idea what he’s talking about, Roach, pay him no mind,” he says and Jaskier grins as Ciri leans into her stuffie, ear pressed against its mouth.

“Roach says you’re right, daddy Jas, she also says that daddy Ger is a meanie!” Geralt frowns before looking down at her.

“We can’t get a dog.”

Ciri sets her little fists on her hips and Jaskier watches on in great interest as their daughter parts her lips.

“Actually daddy, we can. Daddy Jas told me you needed some con— coninc—”

“Convincing,” Jaskier whispers, ignoring the way Geralt glances at him as if he’d stolen the last bit of chocolate ice cream.

“Convincing!” Ciri yells, her tone victorious. “So we’re going to convince you,” she finishes with a solid nod. And there it is, The Cue.

Jaskier quickly jogs to their room, hiding snickers as he grabs two pillows; he hears Geralt ask Ciri just how they’re going to do that— oh and is his husband in for a surprise.

“Weapons at the ready, Ciri?” She carefully sets Roach on the Tv stand before grabbing one of the pillows, Geralt looking on in mild amusement.

“Ready, Jas!” Their daughter looks utterly ridiculous, one foot forward and the another behind her, her face so focused as he takes up the same position.

“Pillows raised!! And... chaaaarrrggggeeee!” Geralt’s eyes widen as they run the short distance to him, bringing pillows down on him as he curls smaller, laughing as Ciri grunts and trash-talks— you’re going down! Down like Valdo Marx in a singing competition against Daddy Jas!

Fuck, does Jaskier love them both so much. 

“Fine,” Geralt grumbles, a properly put on frown gracing his face though he has tears from hiding his laughs. “Fine!”

“Yield!” Ciri screeches, smacking him again, and Jaskier is so proud of her.

“I yield! I yield, leave me be—” Ciri and Jaskier back away, panting and sweaty as they look on at Geralt’s form still curled up, shaking with quiet laughter.

“You’re a bad influence on her,” he grumbles, and Jaskier raises his pillow in a threat.

“How strangely nonchalant for someone who almost just died a minute ago, Geralt.” Geralt bursts out laughing, shaking and teeth bared as he closes his eyes. He’s so beautiful that it makes Jaskier’s throat dry.

“So?” Ciri asks, her pillow raised to smack her dad again, eyebrow raised in challenge. “Can we get a dog?” 

Geralt groans. “Fine, we can get a dog.” 

Jaskier’s quite sure the neighbors hear Ciri’s squeal before she hides her face in his stomach. Geralt grins and rolls his eyes in retaliation to his wink.

They spend the rest of the evening looking for names.

not sure if you also follow marvel, but seeing as MCU *also* has a conjunction event, what would happen if the Witchers wound up on their earth (or anywhere else in the MCU for that matter?)

This is a good question!! Ngl, when I first saw this, I thought of Yennefer meeting Black Widow and kinda got really excited about that idea, but also Yen meeting Scarlet Witch is something too.

My mind wonders to Lambert second, and no I don’t really understand yet how his character is/works, like his personality, so not much comes to mind instead or maybe Rocket, or Loki. I personally feel like he’d make good jokes with Rocket, and I’m not totally 100% sure why Loki??? It’s probably because I kinda see his relationship with Geralt seem like how Thor and Loki are? oddly?? Like one of them is totally furious kitty, while the other one is like “he’s adopted guys”.

Along with Thor, Geralt also likes to talk to Hawkeye, purely because I once heard Geralt likes crossbows, he may also like Captain America because wasn’t he like, pumped with a super-solider serum ??? and then brought to a strange modern arc in the future at sometime ??? they probably help each other out with adjusting, also Steve saying Geralt isn’t a monster and helping him is kinda really soft to think about.

oh buddy do I have Eskel hc’s for you, I totally want to think he gets along well with Doctor Strange, magic???? it’s not realistic, because poor boy couldn’t comprehend, but this is fiction. I also bet he likes Bucky, cause he likes his hair (and cool arm).

okay, Jaskier. My first thought was Spiderman? but you gotta remember Jaskier isn’t young no more, he’s like 40, spidy is baby. it is a cool idea though. So I kept thinking, and I like the idea of him and Ironman getting along, both having a sharp tongue, I bet they can talk and talk for hours.

for Ciri, I really like her and Captain Marvel to get along, oh my gosh, I think it’s a click right at the beginning. Ciri does get fly rides, and!! I also think she’d get along with The Hulk, she’s curious, he’s willing to answer questions.

for Vesemir? I totally think he sits back with Odin, Vesemir is just surprised to see this. I do think they’d do old people things together.

Headcanons: Tissaia gave Yennefer that necklace she wears religiously.

Who do the writers think they're fooling, they expect us to believe that Tissaia's and Yennefer's relationship was a 'mother and daughter' one. What with Vilgefortz saying stuff like "oh me and her have some much in common like our rage and tempestuous and our need to win an argument and also our love for you". So they're saying that Tissaia fell for and got into bed with a man who has the same personality as her 'daughter'. Really? They expect us to believe that. If they wanted the two of them to pass off a mother and daughter relationship they shouldn't have thrown in that line. Let's all be honest Tissaia got with him because it was the closest thing she'd get to having Yennefer as a lover.

Headcanon: That bracelet Vilgefortz gave Tissaia had mind control enchantments on it that's why she was never worried about the novices going missing.

Vilgefortz knew that Tissaia had feelings for Yennefer so he faked her personality traits to get closer to Tissaia.

I really wish we could've gotten Tissaia teaching Ciri magic and Ciri knowing she had two moms.

I swear the scene where Tissaia walks in and sees everyone in cuffs and Sabrina ask Keira why isn't Tissaia secured and Keira is just like "what the fuck do you expect me do I'm not trying to get killed".

Like really Sabrina? This is Tissaia De Vries, The Rectoress of Aretuza. The person who trained thousands of girls including Phillipa and Yennefer. The woman who taught you all everything you know. You thought she could be put in handcuffs without a fight?

I decided to draw the Witcher medallion and add a twist! I know that canonically Jaskier isn’t a main character… but in the Witcher Fanfiction Universe he has a huge role and I love him💛

AFTER SODDEN; What if...after the untimely death of Geralt of Rivia(not sorry to kill him off) it's just Yennefer and Ciri constantly on the run from basically everyone.Place to place until they find a cabin to eventually call 'home'.

Seeing as Yennefer's chaos is in its shit after Sodden,she obviously needs help and who better to reach out to than the great Tissaia De Vries.

Basically Tissaia cannot refuse and agrees to help out with keeping Ciri's whereabouts to herself(and lying to the Brotherhood)and also agrees to help Yennefer help Ciri to control her chaos.Ofc the relationship between the rectoress and the wanted girl actually improves to a better one(you determine it) as time goes on and as for Yenn and Tissaia,it's a rocky one.

I think it would be funny because Tissaia is someone with a metal pole stuck so far up her ass,that it's majestic.Ofc. Yen wants to bend that pole to a 90°C angle for the fun of it.

OH! it would even be so funny if she got the Aretuza students in on it too !! 🤣🤣😎
