20. Ewan McGregor Movie Review: Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones

20. Ewan McGregor Movie Review: Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones

Genre: Family/Action

Rating: PG

Director: George Lucas

Starring: Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Hayden Christensen

Synopsis: Ten years after The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker reunite with Padmé Amidala, now a Senator of the Republic. Their mission is to uncover who is behind the assassination attempts on her life. Anakin is sent to Naboo to act as Padmé's bodyguard and wrestles with his growing feelings for her as well as increasing visions of his mother. While Obi-Wan searches for her killer, he uncovers a secret plan to plunge the galaxy into war.

Ewan Review: Ewan McGregor returns to his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, now graduated from a Padawan to a distinguished Jedi Knight and Master to Anakin Skywalker. Obi-Wan has grown into his role as a teacher to Anakin though the two often don't see eye to eye. He must learn to trust in Anakin and give him the freedom to prove himself. Ewan speaks in an English accent and has longer hair than in The Phantom Menace. He also sports a beard. He gets in a few fights and injured in one of them. He also gets soaking wet and tied by the hands twice. His screentime doubles from The Phantom Menace so you get to see more of Obi-Wan's personality which is appreciated. He's very sarcastic and quippy in this movie. His acting performance is very well done.

Screentime Percentage: Ewan is on screen for a grand total of 33/142 minutes making his SP 23%.

To Ewan or not to Ewan: Is the movie worth watching for Ewan alone? Yes. Is the movie worth watching in general? Yes.

Where to Watch: "Attack of the Clones" is available to watch on Disney+ and fuboTV with a subscription, Hulu, Sling TV, and YouTube TV with a premium subscription, and for rent on Google Play Movies and TV, Fandango at Home, and Amazon Prime Video. You can watch it for free on soap2day.

“The Jedi we’re wrong to fight in the Clone Wars!” How so? Should they have just ignored what happened on Geonosis aka when Dooku and the CIS leadership attempted to murder Padme(a literal senator) and then threw Obi Wan into an arena because he was pursuing said assassin and then threw Anakin and Padme in there with him? Where hundreds of them were butchered trying to rescue them by the droid army controlled by the Sith?

The Jedi not becoming generals makes nothing better. The war still happens and Palpatine has even more free reign to order Dooku to commit atrocities. The Clones still have to fight and probably are gonna be worse off. And the Republic is gonna be pissed them for refusing the draft(because the Jedi were drafted) and that means a lot less ability for the Jedi to do anything(there is only 10,000 of them without Republic support they can do little other than be a roving band of vigilantes.)

Entering the war was a sucky choice sure, but what other options do they have when confronted with the fact the Sith have an army rampaging through the galaxy? When hundreds of their members were killed by said army? When that would mean leaving the clones to fight and die? When it would cut off many way of them helping anyone? I really can’t see how sitting out is better here.

Yoda: Dooku, unkind that was. If nothing good to say have you, say anything, do not.

Dooku: Of course, Master. My humblest apologies.

Dooku: Qui-Gon, you must be careful of what you say to others.

Qui-Gon: Of course. I’m sorry master, I don’t know what came over me.

Qui-Gon: Be mindful of what you say, Obi-Wan. You must strive to be kind, and not cruel.

Obi-Wan: Yes, Master. Sorry, Master.

Obi-Wan: Anakin! You should be ashamed of yourself. Do not speak again until we leave.

Anakin: But- (death glare from Obi-Wan) Fine. Sorry, Master

Anakin: AHSOKA

Ahsoka: FUCK YOU

Some Star Wars Things to Keep You Awake at Night

If ‘Amidala’ was Padme’s ‘Political Name’ and ‘Naberrie’ was her true surname and any person on Naboo serving in any Political Office used a Political name during their tenure in Public Office than does that mean that Palpatine isn’t the Emperor’s real surname and if it’s not than what IS his real surname?

Some Star Wars Things To Keep You Awake At Night

In TESB Vader offers to finish Luke’s Force Training, overthrow the Emperor together, end the destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy. Fast-forward to RotJ and Vader tells Luke that the Emperor will show him the true nature of the Force and that the Emperor will be his Master from now on. Why the shift in thinking? Is he just saying words just in case the Emperor was watching them? Doesn’t Vader know about the Sith’s Rule of Two: one Master and one Apprentice? Wait, he would have to know since he’s been a Sith for 23ish years but if he’s saying that the Emperor will be Luke’s Master . . . .

Oh, I think I see now, he wanted Luke to live and having Luke replace him as the Sith Apprentice was the only solution he could find to keep his son, the child he thought was dead for 20 years, alive.

Some Star Wars Things To Keep You Awake At Night

In the second Rush Clovis Arc Captain Typho had a medical droid called to tend to Clovis’s injuries and the medical droid put Clovis in contact with Dooku at Sidious’s request. Does this mean that ALL the medical droids in Padme’s building have hidden programs that have them report to Sidious? Is it just her medical droids? Did she get treated at any point in her pregnancy by a medical droid that would have reported her condition to Sidious? If so did he have the Droid tell her that there was just one? If things didn’t work out with Anakin was he going to take one of the twins and if Padme was alone and drugged she wouldn’t know possibly that there was two. Did Sidious have other Droids spying on Senators?

Some Star Wars Things To Keep You Awake At Night

Dooku left the Order after TPM and Qui-Gon’s death but at some point Sidious reached out to him and converted him to the Dark Side BEFORE TPM as he was responsible for Sifo-Dyas death about the same time as TPM and ordering the Clone Army. How did Sidious meet Dooku and why did he convert him to his side and just how many other Jedi were converted to the side of the SIth, not just during the PT time frame, but in the decades and centuries before TPM?

Did these secretly evil Jedi recruit Barriss Offee to their cause? Barriss did mention she was hanging out with some Jedi that had a certain view on the War.  If so did they ask her to frame Ahsoka for the Temple Bombing?

Some Star Wars Things To Keep You Awake At Night

If Maul hadn’t been killed on Naboo would Dooku have stayed in the Jedi Order and if so what role would he serve? Would he have voiced concerns about fighting in a galactic war? Would he have tried to divide the Jedi Order in two due to the war?

Or would Dooku have still left but Maul would have filled General Grievous’s shoes since Grievous possibly a replacement for Maul?

Count Dooku is a Shithead, but not for the reason you think:

So count Dooku was Qui-Gon Jinn’s master, but they were estranged because of very different personalities and outlooks, but Jinn was still his kid, so he very obviously cared for him

In fact, Qui-Gon’s death was the catalyst for Dooku leaving the order bc he had lots of critiques of the Jedi order (overly political, ineffective, hypocritical, not true to the code), but after Qui-gon died he was like “why bother?”

Which is my problem. Like sir, your grandchild is still perfectly alive and desperately in need of your help. His master is dead and he now has a traumatized child to raise while extremely traumatized himself. Qui-gon is dead, BUT YOUR GRANDCHILD IS RIGHT THERE?!?

No, instead of belong obi wan and offering support, he just dips

Reminder: Darth Sidious is canonically the ONLY Sith Lord/apprentice/darksider not obsessed with Obi-Wan Kenobi

Xanatos, Maul, Ventress, Grievous, Darth Vader, Dooku, and Savage Opress were coo coo for Cocoa Puffs about him

Reminder: Darth Sidious Is Canonically The ONLY Sith Lord/apprentice/darksider Not Obsessed With Obi-Wan

His locks were simply too luscious and his one liners too annoying

Watching the generational trauma be passed down through Dooku, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Ashoka, and Luke is so heartbreaking. Every dysfunction in one relationship can be traced by to the earlier one.

That s6 episode is also the one where dooku punts obi wan into orbit is it not? top ten Star Wars moment tbh just bc of how fast he forcibly exits stage left

YES, ANON, IT IS

image

It’s also the fight where Dooku literally rolls Obi-wan like a bowling ball:

image

But then I was looking at it again (for like, the thousandth time), and I realized just how good Dooku is in this duel. (And how almost good Obi-wan is.)

(And small disclaimer here, I have no knowledge of “real” sword-fighting aside from what I’ve absorbed through general cultural osmosis and a curious google instinct, this is just an interpretation from my over-excited brain.)

Anakin, for the most part, sticks with Djem So as his primary fighting style, incorporating elements of Ataru in his more acrobatic moments. This holds true throughout the entirety of TCW and is the form by which he eventually overwhelms Dooku in RotS.

Dooku, however, gives a minor masterclass in sword(saber) fighting in this sequence, not only using his preferred Makashi (although I have to say, the man can take on Obi-wan and Anakin at once with one hand behind his back and my gods, is that not evidence of skill), but also demonstrating his ability at

Djem So:

image

Soresu (at least a bastardized form, but I can’t be the only person who recognized that stance Dooku uses):

image

and Ataru (I mean, Dooku did train Qui-gon):

image

But what I really love is the fact that Obi-wan tries to adapt to this, matching Dooku’s *Makashi:

image

and Ataru (in this case, exactly copying his movements):

image

Which...I mean, Obi-wan is essentially being a mini-Dooku here, although he isn’t quite at Dooku’s level for a variety of reasons I have discussed previously in terms of Obi-wan never being on his game around Dooku and actually consistently underperforming when he’s in the presence of his Grandmaster.

But you have to hand it to Dooku for not only winning a(nother) duel against two of the best Jedi in the Order, but doing it with style.

image

I love this evil, old man.
