Fandom Critical - Tumblr Posts
death of the author (or at least what fandom thinks death of the author is) needs to DIE. “hatsune miku ghostwrote *insert problematic media*” NO. your media is problematic. accept it like a fucking adult.
its not racist to acknowledge that china and russia have lgbt censorship and that a lot of asian countries are homophobic. however it IS racist to pretend america isn’t homophobic as well and pretend this makes you morally superior. saw that one Alex Hirsch tweet about Disney trying to get the lgbtq market then turning around and censoring gay relationships for russian and chinese markets. like. don’t blame american problems on Asia. america never needed russia or china’s help to be homophobic. yall are plenty homophobic on your own. don’t go ‘well if it weren’t for those damn commie censors I could have my queer rep angry emoji’; just. just stop. american fundamentalists and puritans are to blame; white conservatives are to blame. russia and china have been america’s convenient big bad bogeyman for decades now because racism lets you pretend your own country isn’t completely fucked up. don’t delude yourself into thinking this is just ooh backward asian censorship instead of a deep-seated problem in american society. if russia and china didn’t exist you still wouldn’t have your goddamn gay rep.
pro ao3 mfers and “fandom olds” need to realize there's a difference between “protecting fandom spaces from evangelical christian censoring of queer and subversive material under the guise of purging child pornography and anti-family values” and “using anti-censorship as an excuse to justify posting genuine fucked up shit like incest, cp, rapefic, racial/queer fetishization, gender essentialism, misogyny, racism and transphobia”
This site's tolerance and acquiescence to incest is so fucking insane like "I don't support it but my mutual is cool so I'll allow it" "richard siken's artistic contributions to society absolve him" "ethel cain can ship whatever, she's earned it" I'm not going to lie to you it's kinda looking like you do support it...
I mean, fanfiction can be fun and shit, but it is not...high art or whatever youre all making it out to be. it’s a form of consumption that takes death of the author to the worst degree, lacks meaningful depth or analysis, and is entirely predicated on breaking down a piece of media into a a handful or easily digestible tropes/ao3 tags. being a fanfic writer is not a job, it is a hobby. being a fanfic writer is not being a struggling artist. fan fiction is derivative and lacks originality. it is a way of engaging in fandom. it is not a replacement for published works, for original fiction, or for real literature. for people saying the premise of recycling or taking inspiration from preexisting works has always been around in literature, yes, it has. however, classics of the written word are not fanfiction. the slop churned out by teens and twenty-somethings, or, god forbid, full-grown adults with children, on ff.net or ao3 is not comparable to the divine comedy, or shakespeare! like. the nerve of some people to even suggest that...
idk who needs to hear this but ur white man slash ship isn't progressive and neither is fandom
It seems like young fandoms these days are programmed to react to buzzwords like 'Gay', or 'Queer'.
Young fans don't recognize good stories anymore or have that part of their tastes wired out by modern cartoons.
Is that just me?
Can you imagine the awkward cringe when Blake and Sun reunite? Their last moment together was back when blacksun was going strong with the implication they would pick things up when they see each other again. Something dumb like Sun hooking up with Velvet offscreen and becoming a bmblb wingman. Or him being single and accepting Blake moved on from him no questions asked and even though he had every right to still have feelings for her that aren't so easily forgotten. It's going to be a shitshow.
I imagine RT would just make it a throwaway gag during the final fight. Like Blake would see Sun with Velvet and they would just say 'good luck', and head off to fight Salem.
I have a feeling that RWBY is building toward an Avengers Endgame style thing.
I hate that DC fans, Marvel fans, and Invincible fans especially on reddit deny the existence of fandom racism and fandom misogyny.
I remember there was a time in internet history in which people were allowed to not like a character or just... Criticize it, now people take criticism of their favorite character as something personal and try so hard to justify their actions
Like, just because I don't like them, it doesn't mean that you are not allowed to do so. You can just like them, they don't need to be a goodie two shoes, or be morally grey or have every single shitty thing they do justified, just like pieces of shit and own up to it
And this also goes to the people who go "but he's evil" yes... And?
I'm not saying you are not allowed to make extensive posts about why you think a characters actions are justified, or why you think a character deserves to be skinned alive under the hot summer sun and then have water poured over them, I'm just saying we should be allowed to like characters even if their list of crimes is as long as the list of side effects from contraceptives but also we should be critical of the content we consume and the characters we like, we need to accept that their actions aren't always justified by a sad backstory and never forget that they are shitty regardless of their sob story
Maidenless and embarrasing behavior is when you treat your blorbos better than how you treat other people and when you bully others over your blorbos
The thing that i don't like from Tumblr and Twitter fandom is people take everything under the sun very personal and even the slightest of disagreement are seen as personal attack. Its even more worrying when clique are formed and any different takes are seen as something that need to be taken down by the clique followers, even more worrying if mass report and bullying happen over discourse
You people do have a life outside of Tumblr, right?
I'm also tired of this. I have already written a post about Gale's autonomy from Mystra. Now I will talk about other things.
1. Why cannot a character have more than one theme and plotline? It is quite natural for a character in fiction to be involved in different plotlines and to represent different concepts. Why shouldn't it be the case for videogame characters? And Gale is not the only complex character in BG3 (which is obvious). Astarion is both a victim of abuse and a racist high elf, Lae'zel considers herself superior to others (similar to Astarion is some way) and has been brainwashed by Vlaakith's followers, Shadowheart has problems with trust (and, quite frankly, cynicism) and has been brainwashed (literally this time) by Sharrans, Wyll has a difficult relationship with his father and has been manipulated by Mizora. In the same way Gale has a problem with hubris and was manipulated by Mystra. If you can understand only "simple" characters with easily understood archetypes, that's your problem.
2. Have you ever thought why the final song of the game is called "Power"? Because power is the ultimate leitmotif of the whole game. And the main problem of the whole game is who you give the power to. All of the companions lacked power and control over their lives. Gale LITERALLY has no control over his life in the second act, either you (Tav) or Mystra have to decide whether he lives or not. Mystra doesn't even show her face (unlike Vlaakith, come to think of it), she is 100% sure that her obedient former Chosen will do as she asks. Do you remember her tone when she says "You look well, Gale of Waterdeep"? She sounds like Mizora the first time we see her, Mystra is possessive and acts like Gale belongs to her (as all of her Chosen, because she doesn't hesitate to send one of her former lovers and also a 1300-year person to another of her former lovers). The way Gale talks about her, about all the gods, shows the bitterness of acquisition that all his former life was a lie. The only way to finally take control over his life, as he thinks, is to become a god.
3. Why do people think that if we take Mystra and Gale, one should be a 100% goodie and another 100% villain? Gale definitely was an idiot when he decided to "return to Mystra" some dubious ancient magic. And he's arrogant and impetuous, but he still was a victim of abuse. Just like Astarion, who is petty, who doesn't want to help anyone, who sometimes acts like a bitch. Really. And he's still a victim of abuse, you know.
4. Abuse can be not sexual and even not physical, but it is still abuse. Abusive parents and abusive teachers often do not "touch" their victims, but they make their life a nightmare. And the victims do not even know they are abused. You don't need to be a child to be abused in that way – just a highly insecure person. Gale is highly insecure behind this overconfident persona he tries to impress us with.
That's all for now, but I may come up with another lecture on the subject.
I do not have patience for "Gale wasn't groomed, and if you think he was you are just throwing around tiktok pseudopsychology buzzwords and refusing to acknowledge that Gale's story is about his ambition and hubris" discourse. That's an auto-block for me.
I'm happy to have a reasonable discussion as to whether or not what Gale experienced with Mystra was grooming in a sexual predator sense or merely a horribly unbalanced power dynamic between goddess and acolyte, but he was undeniably groomed for his role as Chosen in the "selected from a young age and trained for a particular position" sense. Elminster noticed his abilities and began training him when he was 8 years old. That's canon. He says as much his epilogue letter to Gale if Gale ascends. Everything in his life up until he got snatched up and tadpoled confirmed to him that he is only loveable if he is valuable or impressive, and that everything can be taken from him in an instant if he isn't constantly successful. A huge part of Gale's arc if you're romancing him and talk him down from ascending is him beginning to understand that he can be loved for who he is as a person regardless of his achievements and ambitions. Yes, he is arrogant. Yes, he is Icarian. But it's incredibly obtuse to ignore what information the game gives us about how his influences and mentors shaped him into who he is.
i mean this in the nicest way possible, but the fandom’s habit of not applying the same reasoning to similar situations is both frustrating and unhealthy.
if you’re going to say that what one character says is absolutely how that character truly feels, even if that’s said in anger or frustration, then you need to apply that to the rest. if c!dream saying he doesn’t care about anything is absolute truth, then c!tommy saying the same about the discs being worth more than c!tubbo is absolute truth.
it’s not, however, and we know this because people are not black and white, they’re complex, and sometimes say things they don’t mean. we can look beyond the words and see the person and the emotions behind it.
i feel like this also applies to things like the prison and exile. no, prison in minecraft isn’t comparable to prison in real life. neither is abuse in minecraft roleplay because it’s fiction. however, the story gives those things weight. treating one thing or the other as less awful or impactful is honestly fairly disingenuous. the story gives equal weight to both the prison and exile. saying that prison isn’t bad because c!dream isn’t actually there, etc. just isn’t valid.
and the thing is, no one is obligated to care about any one character. you’re not obligated to think the prison is awful. but framing it as fact isn’t accurate because the story gives it weight. the story says it is.
honestly, i feel like this has a lot to do with the way not only the fandom, but some of the characters, approach the concept of ‘good’ and ‘evil’. it becomes a very black and white thing where if a character is considered good, everything they do is good and morally correct and when they do something to hurt someone, it’s dismissed or excused. if a character is considered evil, everything they do is bad and morally wrong and when they do something good or show emotion, it’s painted as manipulative, and if they’re hurt, that hurt is dismissed or diminished. just something to think about.
its almost an insult to wilbur and dreams writing how some people in the fandom potray their characters lmao if i was them i’d be so frustrated

The coolest punk adventure out there! I did this Ashton a while ago and i still like it! I REALLY want to draw the rest...someday ! They're just such a cool character!

actually, stop infantilizing remi and evie
they're teenagers; they're not 'uwu girls' or 'soft babies' or 'innocent cinnamon rolls'. shut the fuck up.
Hey can we not speculate on wether or not someone has a disorder or not. It's weird. Especially calling them ADHD coded.
(I'm talking about a real person not a fictional character)
I don't know if it's just me but I feel like there is a difference between liking something and making something become a part of you. I've seen in happen a lot in fandoms, but not to the scale that it is with the fandoms centering around Vivziepop or Hazbin or Helluva.
There's a huge different. You can love something with all your heart, it can even be a part of you, but you can't do what Viv's fandom does. You can't fall that deep into the belief that any criticism of the thing is a knock at you.
I’m genuinely not looking forward to people turning on characters like Corlys, Addam, Nettles, and Rhaena for “betraying” the Blacks
(BTW this is not to hate on anyone but I predict it is what's going to happen)
