Hey! My name's Onyx and I'm a artist, which gives me incredible powers of creation that I use to make or redesign silly characters instead of focusing on my already existing art projects or simply my overall future : what a life.

So as the title says, I'm redesigning some of the om! characters as well as changing up the world they live in. As for the first redesign I chose (very self indulged choice ) to start with Satan :)

This isn't really an AU but just me ''fixing'' (changing) things that I (emphasis on the I, this is MY opinion, you don't have to agree with me) dislike about the game's world and/or characters. I also added things that were, yes, absolutely unnecessary, but so fucking cool 😎

Btw english isn't my first language so if something doesn't make sense just pretend it does, thanks :)

START OF MY RAMBLING

So, in my vision of obey me, all demons have access to magic (curses, hexes, potions...) but some demons also have a connection with one to two elemental powers (water, fire, wind...)

The ''regular'' magic as well as basic knowledge of the devildom fonctionnement and history is taught to young demons (just born/reborn demons and fallen angels *wink wonk) at RAD (which explain why the heck some litteral ADULTS that could easily have a balanced working life are still in an HIGH SCHOOL environment.) (I know that adults can go to school, no problem with that lmao, but lucifer or satan in the og! game for example have nothing to learn there anymore and could be having a ''regular'' active life like-)

But yes, the academy's objective isn't really to ''tame'' demons, because they can't change their very nature and the idea that a demon (Diavolo) is working on turning other demons into more ''human'' beings seems really fucking off to me

And the human exchange program was supposed to be more of a ''exchange of culture'' kind of things where humans would learn about demon's ways and vice versa, it wasn't as diplomatic as it was in the game. See it as these ''special week'' thingy in school we're you'd learn about other cultures and try different country's dishes everyday. Exept it's for a full year. And in hell.

ABOUT THIS REDESIGN

Soooo my Satan is connected to earth and shadows and is an expert in curses and potions as well as devildom's history which is one of his favorite subjects along with the optional Art and litterature classes. (there's multiple optional classes that are supposed to help students that can't keep up or have bad grades to balance their grades by just showing up and listening, for exemple, mammon sometimes goes to the optional business and trading classes. )

In the og! game, satan is supposed to be lucifer's opposite, but I felt like it was mostly showed with his design and wanted to make it go a little further by making them dress in a more androgynous way and changing a bit his personality, making him a bit more carefree. (he's still super self conscious about his dangerous changes of temper which makes him a very closed and silent person, he's also still introverted, but when I say carefree I mean that he often skips classes to go check on cats or go read, and that they don't feel obligated to fulfill a role of exemple as a head student or avatar of wrath like lucifer does) I honestly just wanted the opposition between these two to be more marked but not necessarily have this ''competition'' between them because it felt very childish.

As for the elephant in the room, yes, he has hooves, no, there's no other reason than the fact that he doesn't have an animal theme like all of the others have. Yes, I only chose it because I find it cute. No, you may not pet them. Oh and as for the ''but why do they show up, aren't they supposed to have a human form'' I just decided that being gifted at everything is unrealistic, so I officially declare that Satan SUCKS AHH at maintaining his human form. He's not helped by the fact that he's constantly concentrating on staying calm and having a neutral facade and would saturate if they also had to concentrate on his physical form. But yeah he's still bad at it.

I’ve had “The Vikings Have Their Tea” playing in my head all day.

And I feel like crying. Because RTTE is over, because HTTYD 3 will be the last one of the trilogy, and above all, because it’s a fictional universe.

My psychologist told me that I feel like this because I can’t accept the real world. It’s true. Real life sucks bad.

Why would we create fictional worlds?

And HTTYD is one of the best of these worlds. Despite being set in the Dark Ages, despite being frigging dangerous and barbaric, despite being set where it’s damn freezing, despite everything.

So keep creating fantastic worlds, people. Never stop.

Years ago, when I was barely a teen but I thought I was “too mature for that”, I told my mom I liked a series (it was Digimon Tamers), and I was obsessed with a character in particular (it was Impmon).

I felt ashamed because I thought it was “too childish for someone my age” (turned out, Tamers was anything but childish, but that’s another story).

I was then that her and I had one of the most heartfelt conversations in my life so far:

My mom: “Do you enjoy the series/character? Do they make you happy?”

Me: “Well, yes.”

Mom: “Does liking them hurt/harm you in any way?”

Me: “No, what a question!”

Mom: “Does you liking them hurt/harm anyone else?”

Me: “I really don’t think so.”

Mom: “Then why should you feel ashamed? As long as you enjoy something that makes you happy and it doesn’t hurt/harm anyone -yourself included-, then you should just ignore everything else and enjoy what you like”

You know what she did next? She sat right next to me everyday to watch the series with me… and she adored it! The series and the very character I loved! Still to this day, Impmon remains one of her favorite characters.

Now I’m about to turn 27, I have my own life, I’m obsessed with lots of new series, and my mom still sticks true to what she said years ago.

So fans -of ANY AGE, of ANY SERIES-, if you ever feel ashamed for liking something, remember my mom’s words.

ENJOY WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY, AND SCREW THE REST OF THE WORLD (as long as you’re not doing anything harmful to it)

A pain

While I'm in the midst of posting my college romance *ahem*here*ahem* I'm also working on like 20 million other stories, very specifically two stories I'm revising from my childhood.

I need to stop gatekeeping my damn stories so I figured there's be no harm in brain storming here.

So, there are two stories somewhat connected as they share the same universe. My main issue is I need better world building. Rn, both these stories are just BOTW or OOT, and I don't wanna copy them.

I'm not set on having a world with extreme climates but just a world with a lot of mystery to tie in with bith the stories themes.

Oh, what are the two stories about? Well I'm glad no one asked.

One is titled Kingdom of Bumalia and it's a origin story, since I like Zelda think of it as the Skyward Sword of my universe. The people of this world are de-evolutions of the "normal" humans that show up later. It's a spin on the classic thought of evoultuon that humans evolved from monkeys or lizards. My species are called Bumalians, their defining trait is they all have some animal apendage. For ex. My MC Cassie is a rabbit born from a rabbit mother and a wolf father, which every trait was more dominate, is what the child ends up with. So far I have:

Rabbits,

Birds (specifically hawks)

Wolves

Insects (I'm terrified of bugs so I really only have one that's been described -_-')

Aquatic animals (Dolphin, mermaid, and an Orca)

And Mice

During the course of revising this story, I added a TON of animals. Originally, I really only describes the main characters which were three wolves, two rabbits, the family of hawks, and a Dragonfly. I know now I need to add more and that's what I did. However, I can't just have animals, I need other things.

I creates a fruit called a Magadear and a herb called Grayseed for tea. I of course need more, but I'm just too disorganized to actually come up with some.

I wanted to make a staple flower for a certain scene that involves the Kingdom's current Queen, so I'll be thinking about that along the way.

Really I'm posting this (and a few others) in case anyone has any good ideas. Some people come up with things that get my brain flowing and it's always nice to discuss fictional worlds, who knows maybe we can start some kind of thread of ideas and play around with stuff!

I usually have a ton if fun discussing stories and I'm honestly missing that. This is a good way to get back into it.

All the Screams World Building >

So, while I try not to let my thoughts get to me as usual. I wanted to share this idea I was realy excited about!

Randomly, I thought of this old idea I had where a man who was "cursed" to transform into a wolf and a woman who's the only one who can tame him. This thing was dead officially.

Then this happened at the beginning of the month:

This is part of what I wrote that day.

Thus The Moon, Rabbit, and The Wolf was reborn 🕺

From there I started writing a story that I foolishly said would only be 6k words max. It's at 10k and I'm not even a little bit done with it 😷

So then the other day I wanted to see what "Shuichi' looked like.

Btw, his name got changed to Tsumi to match a theme in the story of him being a Mood God

I really enjoyed making this concept since I find him really adorable.

Backstory time: the top image is him before he "awakens" as his previous self/The Moon God. He's mischievous and a little impulsive. In general, he falls victim to his emotions too easily.

He's one part of this trio so if I ever get around to drawing the Wolf and the Rabbit I'll share them too 😄

Here's something else. Sorry if this is a little confusing, but the creature that I drew before isn't related to this planet at all.

I don't have a name for this because that is the one thing I suck at when it comes to worldbuilding.

But, this is the setting for a new story I'm writing!

I'll probably share more on it with another post I'm making, so look forward to it if you're interested.

But I wanted to detail some things about this planet, so let's begin 😁

Basic concepts

So, I wanted to do something that wasn't the typical fantasy Huge Ass Grass Field™ so I sat and came up with a really annoying concept that hurt my brain when I first made it.

That was essentially this:

Hell as the Ice world

The Ice World as a hot area

The Jungle as a desert

And lastly the desert as a jungle

From there, I came up with this concept that the planet is split into two halves. Two surface halves and two core halves. Inhabitants of each area have their own unique characteristics and usually don't intermingle. Kind of like states, counties, regions, or provinces. I decided to call them regions for reference.

Students (which aren't kids) of these regions eventually have to expand their horizons and either take up an occupation in their origin region or leave and expand their studies outside their region.

In this case, my MCs are the latter and are leaving their home region to explore the surface.

Characteristics

Since these regions are unnamed, I'll refer to them by their basic comparisons.

The surface

This half is a temperate iceland.

Characterized by it's massive icebergs/icicles. Inhabitants live on the very top of the icicles in order to stay close to the sun.

However, the surface isn't a frozen wasteland like it appears. The surface is actually warmer than the sky, but there's no way to grow anything on the surface as the ground is perpetually frozen. So, the Ice inhabitants remain in the sky instead.

The Core

A Frozen Hellscape

This half is colder than the surface due to the pockets of magma being closer to the surface. These pockets of magma are the core's only source of light. (I just though of this. Since the magma would be between the icicles, the ice would refract the light and in my head that sounds so pretty!)

Having an abundance of almost everything makes this region the most prosperous.

They have everything from food, jewels, gems, precious metals, and other natural resources.

Second Surface

This world's desert.

The tree is so big that it completely covers the entire surface on it's side. Making the ground below it devoid of sunlight.

I compared it to something like a farmer's crop field with no crops and just plowed soil.

However, the tree acts as the inhabitant's only source of food. This tree can grow any and all kinds of fruit, it also protects from natural disasters and is home to the world's largest collections of animals and bugs.

Second Core

This one's my favorite.

A tangle jungle.

Consisting of the roots from the surface tree, the inhabitants live within the roots system. The roots are so huge that buildings can be built on them.

The roots are searching for water that seeps into the ground from the Hell Core above it, but the roots can't go any further as they'll freeze.

Every location does have a kind of relationship and the cores well get along as the surfaces do. There is a bit of discrimination from everyone as most core dwellers think surface dwellers are soft and weak while surface dwellers believe those in the core are brutish and vile.

It's nothing major, just your typical region skirmish.

This is a recent WIP of mine, so I don't have much more to add but that, but I do have a bunch of facts in my head, so, if you wanna ask about something, I'd be more than happy to answer anything!

Okay, who has good worldbuilding advice for poor, little me?

Like, tips for creating a society with its own history and rules from scratch.

Preferably with magic and technology involved.

About worldbuilding

My style of worldbuilding is observation, feeling and perception, allowing the world to grow on its own, favoring ideas that resonate with me personally over those that are logical and realistic. It is important for me to see, feel and then - to understand what my world and characters wants to say and show me, and not to be their designer.

Because of this, I care little about the biology of the creatures, what they eat and why they look so strange. I don't know much about them, but I allow them to be mysterious, although I am always glad to finally see and understand some details of their life and nature.

«One of my favorite ideas/scenes is about wandering in the snowy mountains. It’s like a journey through the afterlife, lonely and very personal. Climbing the mountain, where the only obstacle on the way is the mountains themselves - snow-covered and cold, with blinding blizzards, and threatening steep slopes. One wrong step - and you will fall down and die. Or freeze to death»

This is purely emotional and feeling, there is no question of whether this is real for the character or not, and why this lonely Vaeraf went to the mountains if it is so cold and dangerous. These mountains are a symbol and a metaphor for his life, feelings, difficulties he faces, and his way to the top of the mountain - to the goal, to the sky, to realize something, to overcome difficulties.

Simply put, the emotion and feelings that I experienced from my stories or when I met, for example, a Vaeraf person in my imagination or dream, are more important for me. In my art, I want to share these feelings, and not to build and describe their biology in detail. I also don't try to give all the characters I meet detailed biographies or stories. I only know these characters who are my close friends, just like it works with people in real life. What makes my characters so dear to me is my personal relationship with them, and I love them as persons that live in my mind.

Sometimes I worry that my way of creating and showing my world is wrong or stupid, because I noticed that the vast majority of people interested in worlds and creatures are more designers and "scientists" than people for whom personal impressions and feelings are way more important. But I no longer want to try to change myself, my art and my world into something that is not close and not interesting to me personally.

I remember such an idea that there are two types of artists - architects and gardeners. Architects build their world and stories according to the rules, trying to do everything well and right, they intentionally plan, build and control every detail. Whereas gardeners let their world grow on its own, but take care of it and choose which grown ideas they keep and which they uproot. In that case, I'm a total gardener who also tends to let things just grow and die on their own, even if it turns into overgrown chaos. It is important for me to feel, experience and analyze this chaos as it is, but at the same time - to love and take care of those parts of my world that are important and dear to me.

Only this way feels natural to me and keeps me in touch with my world and art, and I sincerely love this way of working with the world, even if it is hard and sometimes inconvenient to explain things to strangers. But my art, characters and my world are inherently connected to my feelings, experience and mental state, and I do not want to destroy this connection for the sake of some "true" worldbuilding just because my way is different.

Update: (I decided to add and supplement these my comments in the post)

I also want to add that it doesn't mean that I don't try to analyze and explain things from my world. It's just that my focus is different, it is important for me to feel and understand Vaerafes as persons, so I focus on their perception, feelings, morality, philosophy and psychology, trying to understand how they see, think and feel, while their nature is part of their personality. But I rarely share it because it's usually too personal - for both me and my characters.

It may be their understanding of the world, their morals and values, their relationship with each other, and also - my own relationship with them. While their world as a whole is just the world they live in, I don't study or detail it as seriously and in depth as my characters' stories, which are quite personal and can be quite metaphorical. Besides, I have some different worlds/alternative universes with different stories and ideas. Some of them don't even have the idea of being at least a bit realistic/scientific.

It's not about worldbuilding only, but also about my personal interests. Things related to philosophy(?) and psychology, as well as symbolism, self-exploration and self-expression in art, are more interesting to me than the scientific side of nature and wild animals. I like science, and sometimes it's interesting to think about my beings from that perspective, but that's just not my focus and I still perceive it from a more philosophical point of view.

I would say that the truly "scientific" side of my world is the very fact of having a world and living characters in the head of me, a living animal being of the human species. Therefore, knowing me and my interests, I would rather dig into the learning more about these weird natural processes of my mind, to know what it is and how it works, than into what these fictional creatures eat and how their digestion works, heh.

This is just my personal perception, understanding of things and interests.
