My 8-year-old daughter and I celebrated Star Wars Day by watching The Phantom Menace. That was fun on its own, but even better when she called padawans "starter Jedi," and now that's what I will call them, too.

come morning light

Obi-Wan cuts Anakin’s hair, ahead of the victory celebration on Naboo. [AO3]

Besides the intermittent chirps of Nubian early morning birds, quiet snips of the scissors is the only sound filling the small space in the fresher.

On the stool, the boy is remarkably quiet. Slanting pale light falls into sun-bleached locks as they fall off his shoulder and onto the floor. Anakin watches it with downcast eyes, in a stillness Obi-Wan already knows is uncharacteristic of him.

Perhaps he hadn’t had much to sleep either last night, after Qui-Gon’s funeral. As for Obi-Wan, it would have felt disdainful to lay his head down on a pillow and close his eyes, after witnessing Qui-Gon being laid to rest on the pyre. He had instead spent the night in deep meditation, which afforded him strength and resolve enough to carry on through the day, but not much more. Focus on the boy, Obi-Wan thinks to himself. Now that morning has come, it’s time to move on. Your vows will guide you now, if the man you made them to cannot.

It’s still a couple of hours until the victory celebration, and they’re up early to put Anakin into the shape of a new Padawan, in preparation for it. There’s already a set of new robes laid out on the bed inside the room, which they’d apparently struggled finding, given Anakin’s small size. (Starched and cream-colored, Obi-Wan imagines it sitting stiffly across the boy’s shoulders.) The other part of it is, of course, the haircut. It’s something he’s done for young Padawans before, but this is different. Much too different.

Having cleared away some of the mop, Obi-Wan pauses, and carefully parts a strand of hair just above Anakin’s right ear, tying it off with a ribbon. Anakin doesn’t know, and Obi-Wan doesn’t think about how it wouldn’t be touched for another ten years, until Obi-Wan is the one to cut it off again.

After repeating this with another tuft at the back of his head, the clips of the scissors resume. Obi-Wan leans in close, combing through the remaining bristly locks— surprisingly soft now, having been cleaned of sand and battle smoke— and methodically cuts it down to even lengths. His hands do not shake, though it feels as though they should. The task is monotonous enough that Obi-Wan’s mind drifts, and he has to wonder why he can’t chase away the flashes of Qui-Gon’s body on fire, looking down at this boy.

Finally, he combs out any loose clumps, and comes around to kneel in front of Anakin. Their eyes meet. Neither speaks a word, but they both feel the light shifting around them, like it could encase this moment forever. Obi-Wan goes on. He unties the strand by Anakin’s ear, and nimbly weaves it into a short braid, which comes to rest just above his shoulder.

When it’s finished, Anakin tries to run a hand through his hair, only to be met with its abrupt end. He looks bewildered for half a moment, before his hand goes to the ponytail, the braid, and he looks up at Obi-Wan with a hesitant, but genuine smile.

“It’s just like yours.”

Obi-Wan matches his expression, and nods.

“Come on now,” he lays a hand on his Padawan’s shoulder, and gently guides them out. “It’s time to get ready. The Queen will be waiting for us.”

15. Ewan McGregor Movie Review: Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

15. Ewan McGregor Movie Review: Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

Hey y'all, I'm back! I took a break that lasted longer than expected and it's finally time for me get back to it. This is Ewan's first movie of 1999.

Genre: Family/Sci-fi

Rating: PG

Director: George Lucas

Starring: Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Ahmed Best, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd

Movie Synopsis: "The Phantom Menace" is about two Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, who are sent on a simple diplomatic mission to help a planet in crisis. What they discover is a much larger conspiracy and that their enemy, The Sith, have finally resurfaced after 1,000 years. Aid for the Jedi comes from an unlikely ally, Anakin Skywalker, who is an enslaved child and believed by Qui-Gon to be the Chosen One who will bring balance to the Force.

Ewan Review: Ewan McGregor plays the character Obi-Wan Kenobi who is an Apprentice aka Padawan to his Master, Qui-Gon Jinn. Obi-Wan is near the end of his Apprenticeship and is a very calm, focused, and prepared Jedi learner. While his Master believes little Anakin is the Chosen One and will do anything, even go against their Council's orders, to train the boy, Obi-Wan is not convinced. During their mission, Obi-Wan must use all of his training to confront the Sith and help bring peace to the planet. Ewan speaks in what sounds like a British accent for this role. He doesn't have any love interests, kissing, or nude scenes. His role isn't very prominent so he doesn't do much. He goes swimming with his clothes on if that is important to you and he has a fight scene at the end of the movie which is spectacular. His acting is fine for the little he's given to do.

Screentime Percentage: Ewan is on screen for a grand total of 23/136 minutes making his SP 17%.

To Ewan or not to Ewan: Is the movie worth watching for Ewan content alone? Sigh...no. Wait! Before you crucify me, just please take off your nostalgia glasses for a second! This movie and version of Obi-Wan is as dear to my heart as it is to many fans. However, my absolute love for this character doesn't change the fact that the man is barely in the movie. When he is, it's very brief scenes where he tends to be standing quietly in the background. He also has minimal lines. Even Ewan himself has joked about how he was basically hired to just stand behind Liam Neeson. The bulk of his screentime happens in the last TEN minutes of the movie. Ewan being in this film is a plus, not the reason you should watch. So, I'm obliged to say that this isn't the Ewan content you're looking for (pun intended). Now, is the movie worth watching in general? Absolutely! It's such a fun time, the world building is incredible and don't get me started on the film score! Plus, the lightsaber duel at the end is one of the best fight sequences in the entire Star Wars series.

Where to Watch: You can watch The Phantom Menace if you are subscribed to Disney+. The movie is available for rent on Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, or Fandango at Home. You can also pirate it on soap2day.

That last sentence gutted me 😖

Shatterpoints

so Mace's shatterpoints are a source of both comedy and tragedy to me. today we will be focusing on tragedy

in fics usually they're described as superimposed over a person but i like to think that they can have specific positions

like the absolutely massive one over Anakin's heart, because it's a struggle of his heart choosing

or a shatterpoint on Obi-Wan's hand, which he would one day raise in violence against Anakin

Mace does not understand the shatterpoint behind each and every clone's head

Obi-Wan Kenobi Held Thirteen Years Between His Fingers.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Held Thirteen Years Between His Fingers.

Obi-Wan Kenobi held thirteen years between his fingers.

The weight of it was feather light, but the burden on his shoulders made his chest heavy and his breaths short. As much as it weighed on him, however, it seemed impossible to let go of.

His thumb rubbed it, absentmindedly, smoothing over the surface of it, feeling the texture and the occasional curve of a silka bead or the tightly wound thread. Yes, each of which was placed there with care, accompanied by the words of wisdom and pride. Each one special, signifying his growth, his maturity.

Why, then, did he feel like that twelve-year-old again? The one now separated from him, and held within his fingers? Every memory and struggle, every moment he had lived as a Padawan was there, in his hand.

The funeral service would not begin for another hour. He had been there for two, standing vigil, feeling it was his duty. He felt it may make up for every lost second spent apart from his Master’s side. Every time he should have been at Qui-Gon’s side. And every time, from now forward, when he would no longer be.
