Wof Headcanon - Tumblr Posts
Idk if this is a unique Headcanon or not, but I wonder if the super big electric eels in Corals dungeons are artificially bred to be like that. Since electric eels are nowhere as big as they seem in Wof, I can imagine the Seawing royals bred the electric eels to be way bigger and more deadly.

Who knew working on headcannon sheets for each individual tribe (even as sketches) would be a lot of work. I put them in order of how I view their size, seawings being the smallest and icewings being the biggest. I didn’t wanna go through and color and line all of them bc again just sketching them took enough time. I took a lot of inspiration from people on here, instagram, and one of my close friends, ty btw it helped fill the pages a lot.
Anyway enjoy my little sketch headcannons for all the little tribes!
Mwehehe *splits the Rainwings into 3 different species*

Albino Nightwing idea. I'm sure these can exist right? Right???
Pyrrhian Tribes and their Natural Prey
-While farming is common place in modern Pyrrhia and you can now buy food many dragons, particularly younger dragons and those who live away from the cities, still regularly hunt for their food
-IceWings primarily hunt seals, walrus, and whales. Polar bears, reindeer, and ox are also hunted but food wise come second to the marine prey and are more valuable for their pelts.
-SkyWings hunt mountain ungulates(deer, goats, sheep) supplemented by fish. Despite their name they don’t often go after birds with the exception of turkeys and other fowl in the lower forest areas of the kingdom.
-MudWings are opportunistic hunters and will take any animal large enough to qualify as a meal. Cattle, boar, crocodilians, and large aquatic rodents are frequently hunted.
-Like MudWings SeaWings also hunt anything in their environment big enough to qualify as a meal. Fish, sharks, large marine reptiles, squid, and whales (though less frequently than IceWings) are all part of a SeaWing’s diet.
-RainWings hunted monkeys, capybara, tapir, and occasionally large bugs. They purposefully avoided more dangerous prey like crocodiles or jaguars and instead fulfilled the rest of their dietary needs with fruits and nuts.
-SandWings take whatever they can get but primarily hunt giant arthropods, snakes, tortoises, and desert ungulates like pronghorns. On the edges of the Sand Kingdom where desert turns to grassland there is much larger prey that is hunted, but they are not in your typical SandWing diet.
-In the old kingdom NightWings hunted desert animals in addition to their own forest animals because of the proximity to the Sand Kingdom. Coyotes, deer, and even bears were hunted in the piney cliffs of the old kingdom.
Random headcanon:
Turtle is a metalhead.
I love to imagine that some night/ice hybrids have dry ice breath💕
Random headcanon:
Nightwings back in Darkstalker's time had thicker British accents.
I raised from the darkest pit of hell only to show you this

Yep, some lecture sketches of Whirlpool. His face expression mirrors my emotional state for these two last weeks.

And there is a headcanon how he could wear rings on webbed talons. Idk, it looks kinda weird but... C`mon, we are talking about stinky piece of algae!

The moment when you get your new glasses
Very stylized Cricket. It was really fun to draw her. I made two versions of her because I`m still not sure how to depict hivewings

I mean... Compound eyes or simple eyes? Idk it`s difficult to pick one... I like both!
Can`t stop thinking about this headcanon...
Sandwings having these huge ears to cool themselves down in the hot desert

There`s also about expressions

[ID: two rough picters of dragons from the book series Wings of fire: Qibli (sandwing) covering the eye of Winter (icewing) with his own ear in a joking manner. Winter does not like it. The bottom one shows Sunny (sand/night hybrid) with different expressions wich are visually highlighted with her big ears. When she`s startled - they go slightly up and back, surprised - straightly up, calm - just hanging down, angry/protecting herself - they get turned into a position that reminds about the way cobra`s cape looks like (probably trying to look bigger or more menacing). End ID]
If your ears are that big, you can easily turn them into a certain position to make them look like the cape of cobra when angry or with the intention to impress someone. For example, Burn would keep her ears like this almost constantly

Individuals under cut

I have a headcanon to explain this. Because peril ate basically coal/ Black rocks most her life and sometimes burnt food that basically counts as charcoal.
I believe skywings are geovores! They can eat rocks, and gems like dragons in MLP. Animals in real life sometimes swallow rocks to help with digestion. But in my mind skywings are capable of getting nutrition from the rocks like mlp dragons, not so much following real life animals as there are no proper geovores.
I don’t understand how Peril manage to survive on burnt food and not starve to death? Does burnt food even give any nutrients? Or maybe Firescales are able to live off burnt food and stuff…
.
What's funny is that in Canon this dosent fully apply to all the animals as humans keep cows and horses(seen in dragon slayer)
But I love mentioning just how big things would be in comparison if everything actually was sized up.
In the AU I'm working on planet Phyrria is on is larger, has weaker gravity(similar ish to that of the moon???) And is populated by mega flora and mega fauna. How it's all sized up is we took the average man vs an animal then scaled it up to a sandwing. All the tribe's also have different sizes in this AU but what's important is sandwings and nightwings are basically the middle ground between the super large and super small dragons.
So things size up like this.
(Credit to my friend Diamyn on Discord she's the owner of the AU)

The funniest thing in WoF to me is how everything is sized up for dragons to use and whatnot. Of course it would be, given they're like 20 feet tall and such.
This makes it so that scavengers are incredibly tiny and small in comparison to literally everything else. Apples are almost as big as a person's head. This makes the sizing pretty funny to look at

Call me crazy but what if i go crazy and start making hc where every tribe in WoF are wyverns
What if i do it
What if i draw it
What if i'm crazy
Can i come over and be weird (show my WoF headcanons and ocs)
I love this sm I’ve wanted to do something like this for so long THIS IS SO AWESOME
Tribal variations (headcanon): part 1(?)
Icewings

The tribes live on quite large territories, and I think that within them there are different variations that differ in mentality and colours. Decided to start with icewings! I hope I will continue to do this. Who would you like to see next: skywings, seawings or leafwings?
hmmm. what are your thoughts on dragon size. tribe-wise, as compared to each other, and your headcanons on the main characters of each arc?
Before I move on to finalizing yesterday's and today's Smaugust submissions, lets change pace and grab a question to answer. I need a change of scenery for a bit.
Let's talk about dragon sizes and body shapes/types.
General tribe overview
My general thoughts on the size relations between different tribes would be something like this. This is based on average; you're going to have outliers in either direction based on the individual (i.e. Princess Burn is very large for a Sandwing, while Sunny is very small).
Mudwings are the largest of the Pyrrhian tribes by sheer body mass. They aren't always the tallest because their bodies are kind of squat and compact, but in terms of body weight they reign supreme at the top.
Skywings are the tallest, especially when sitting down, due to their long necks. They aren't particularly massive, in fact a lot of Skywings are very slender with long limbs and necks. But if you sit one down and constructed a cube around them, they would take up a lot of space, moreso than any other tribe.
Seawings come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they tend to be a bit heavier than you would think. In a way they are like a less extreme expression of Mudwings, not AS massive as them, as well as less compact. Kind of like a middle-ground between Mudwings and Skywings. What makes them a bit heavier is that their skin has a layer of blubber that insulates them from the cold of the ocean depths. The thickness of this layer is different between individuals.
Nightwings and Icewings lie somewhere in the middle of the size chart. In terms of mass they are roughly equal, but Icewings tend to have more elongated bodies and limbs while Nightwings are more broad and a little squat.
Sandwings are springy little bundles of wiry muscle. They like to keep their bodies close to the ground (making them look a little smaller than they actually are) and have powerful limbs for leaping on, around, and over opponents. If they were in D&D, their attacks would have the Finesse tag, allowing them to attack with Dexterity instead of Strength.
And lastly, Rainwings are usually small and light. This allows them to climb trees and sit on the topmost branches without their weight making them snap off. Their wings are also a bit smaller than those of other tribes; they're meant for short bursts of flight to help getting up on trees, while travelling long distances in the jungle is accomplished via use of wings AND tail in tandem. Their slight stature is part of the reason why so many other tribes dismiss them as weak and useless.
The Dragonets of Destiny
Clay is unquestionably the largest of his peers. He is enormous, even among Mudwings. I think he might have been the most massive thing in that cave under the mountain (weight-wise), and in a way Kestrel was lucky he was such a gentle spirit, because if Clay had decided to sit on her, there would have been very little she could have done. It's a bit silly they threatened Tsunami with hanging Clay from a stalactite, because the visual of Kestrel and Webs trying to carry him up there would have been comical.
Tsunami is, perhaps equally as unmistakably, the second largest after Clay. She clearly takes after her mother in terms of size and thus towers over a lot of other Seawings. While not as tall as Clay, her body is a bit longer and she has a very powerful tail. Most of her bulk is muscle, compared to Clay's roughly equal mixture of muscle and fat. I think she might actually be physically stronger than Clay, but is less durable than him.
Starflight might either be the third-largest, or fourth after Glory, depending on whether you measure by tallness or body mass. He might be the very definition of big-boned, appearing kind of plump but not actually being that fat. He didn't get a lot of exercise outside of Kestrel's mandatory drills, and he's not really in a rush to change that after escaping, so overall, he is quite out of shape.
Glory is what you could consider tall for a Rainwing, but she started out rather noticably underweight. This is because sunlight is a vital component to a Rainwing's metabolism, so her body couldn't get the amount of energy it needed while she was forced to live underground. This gradually got better as she went outside and got more sun time. She is still kind of thin now, but in a much healthier way.
And then Sunny is the smallest. She is just kind of petite, nobody knows why and it's not a health issue, it's just how she is wired. Maybe Stonemover's dad was really short and it skipped a generation.
The Jade Winglet + Peril
Carnelian is large and tough, being proud of her physique and aiming to be a career soldier, thus keeping herself in shape. Within the Skywing military I imagine there are two pervasive ideas of what "being in shape" means. Some train their entire body evenly, to fight strongly in the air, but also to remain formidable if they end up grounded (via wing injury, or having to defend a ground position). Others believe this is planning for failure and thus mainly train their wings while keeping the rest of their bodies light and easy to maneuver during flight. Carnelian is in the former camp.
Peril is very tall, lanky, and lean, with barely any defined muscle or body fat. This is because her fire scales affliction causes her body to consume vast amounts of calories to sustain itself, and thus she has trouble to build up any significant muscle mass or fat reserves. She would have to ingest two-to-three times the amount of food a regular dragon does to offset this, which she usually doesn't.
Winter is very toned and muscular compared to his peers (sans Carnelian), as is befitting for a royal Icewing. His tribe proudly identifies as a caste of elite warriors, so the idea of being physically frail is considered shameful and dishonorable. As a result most royals will exercise rigorously in their spare time to keep themselves in peak physical condition. Most Icewings pull this off while still looking refined and elegant. Winter looks a little broad and awkward compared to, say, his sister.
Moonwatcher is about average in terms of size. She has a bit of a curve to her due to growing up in an environment with abundant food, but underneath conceals a surprising amount of strength and stamina, owed to having to survive in the jungle on her own from a young age. She looks out of shape at a glance, but is anything but.
Umber's body type is a little atypical for a Mudwing. While still a bit broad, his frame is more wiry and light compared to his kin. He is also kind of short. His siblings can pick him up and carry him around easily.
Qibli is a bit taller than Umber and Moonwatcher, but much thinner and a bit scrawny. His frame is mostly wiry muscle with little body fat. He consciously keeps himself in shape to not be a burden to his queen, but not with the same intensity as Winter or Carnelian. He also doesn't eat enough to pack on a large amount of muscle. This suits him fine though, he is satisfied with where his body is.
Turtle was not graced with the same genes as Tsunami; he takes more after his father who was a bit on the average-to-small side. He also hates physically exerting himself and has a magical trinket that lets him double his food rations, so he is somewhat on the chubby side. Not quite obese, but noticeably plump.
Kinkajou is the smallest of her winglet, but manages to be barely taller than Turtle when she arches her back and stands on her toes (and Turtle intentionally hunches because he sees what she's doing and wants to please her). She is very slender and slight but has a surprising amount of stamina just because she is so full of energy and always runs around everywhere.
Whew... This took a lot longer than I anticipated, so I think I'm going to have to cut it here. Forgive me. I hope this is still entertaining and/or informative.
They are roughly in order from biggest to smallest, but it's very difficult to say in some cases. Like, comparing someone who is technically taller by height to someone who is shorter but has twice the body mass, where does one draw the line? I'm sure I've managed to find a middle ground here that pleases neither side.
If I wasn't so artistically drained and exhausted right now, I would draw a size chart or something.
PYRRHIA
*Alt text available!

Roughly 1.5x the size of North America, Pyrrhia is the largest continent inhabited by dragons. Despite it's monumental size, very few areas on the map are considered un-owned territory, with even fewer areas being considered unexplored entirely.
Thanks to the continent's huge climate range, Pyrrhia has the most dragon tribe diversity of any landmass, hosting seven tribes in their entirety.
This includes: SkyWings, IceWings, SandWings, MudWings, RainWings, NightWings and SeaWings.

IceWing Territory

The Ice Kingdom, inhabited primarily by IceWings, is a large peninsula in the far north, also including a smaller cape just slightly south. It borders both the Sky Kingdom and the Kingdom of Sand.
While a large portion of IceWings live within the walls of the Ice Palace (an extravagant city compared to most other palaces), the majority live in villages and towns along the Ice Kingdom's coast. This is ideal for most, since the primary food source of IceWings are fish & sea-faring birds and mammals. However, it's not uncommon to find an IceWing family or two living further inland, hunting elk and other land-dwelling prey.
While only a relatively small portion of IceWing territory remains snowy year-round, the entire territory all the way down to Where-No-Dragon-Goes-Hungry can be seen blanketed in ice and snow during the winter months.

SkyWing Territory

The Sky Kingdom is home to the SkyWings, and is the largest land-based dragon-claimed territory on the map, give or take. Their territory borders several other kingdoms, including the Kingdom of the Sea, Ice Kingdom, Mud Kingdom, and the Kingdom of Sand.
Being quite physically big and territorial compared to most other dragons, SkyWings demand much more space (and use of such space) than their neighbors, despite there being much fewer of them overall. By technicality, the Sky Kingdom encompasses the entire Pyrrhian mountain range; although the SkyWings living any farther south than the Diamond Spray Delta tend not to argue about where borders are drawn, so long as they get a good night's sleep.
SkyWings tend to live solitarily or in pairs/family units, with the exception of those living in the Sky Palace working for the current Queen. Due to this, there are very few dedicated SkyWing towns or villages, with most SkyWings opting instead to pick out an ideal cave in the mountains to call home. This is of course not absolute, and there are many SkyWings living in harmony in bordering towns and cities with other tribes, some being SkyWing dominant.

MudWing Territory

The Mud Kingdom is home to the MudWings; the tribe of the largest land-dwelling dragons in the world. Their kingdom borders the Sky Kingdom, the Kingdom of the Sea and the Rainforest Kingdom.
Despite their size, they actually don't hold the largest amount of territory. Being rather sedentary, they typically never need more than the average pond to themselves and their siblings.
MudWing territory consists of a variety of land types, with the standard swamps and marshes; but also including bamboo forests, floodplains, sparse rainforest and grasslands. This variety in biome gives them plenty of agricultural opportunity, making MudWings one of the largest exporters of both plant and animal produce.
Their rich land also provides an abundance of earthen materials that other tribes covet for their own uses in construction, pottery and other types of craftsmanship; including kaolinite and other clays, calcite, etc!

RainWing Territory

The Rainforest Kingdom is home to the RainWings, the tribe of the smallest and most numerous dragons on the continent. Their kingdom borders the Mud Kingdom and the Kingdom of the Sea.
RainWings live communally, and thus are not separated into several towns. Rather, all RainWings (for the most part) share a single village that extends quite far throughout the rainforest, held together by the Queen's Royal Pavilion (marked on the map as the RainWing Village).
Although, since the events of the NightWing exodus from the Volcano, there lies a single other village amongst the jungle. Some RainWings find it comfortable enough to live there with the NightWing refugees, but don't prefer it.
The rainforest is a dragon's ultimate destination for near any kind of exotic fruit, flower, or animal. While RainWings used to be the top exporter of their tropical produce, these days the MudWings have taken on the task of growing orchards and vineyards, while the RainWings keep to themselves.

SeaWing Territory

SeaWing territory, home to the SeaWings, is technically the largest dragon-claimed territory on earth; this is because the vast majority of their inhabited space is underwater, and thus there is very little competition for territory. The land they control however, is the smallest compared to any other tribe, consisting mostly of small islands and islets. Their territory borders the Rainforest Kingdom, Mud Kingdom and Sky Kingdom.
Despite being the largest kind of dragon on the planet, they are incredibly numerous due to the abundance of food and territory. SeaWings live communally, but are spread across several habitable zones, including the Deep Palace and Summer Palace (their primary homes), and various island caves, huts, deep sea trenches, and sea stacks.
They are also partially migratory, spending warmer springs and summers in the Summer Palace, and living deeper underwater through autumn and winter.

SandWing Territory

The Kingdom of Sand, controlled by the SandWings, is the third largest land-based dragon territory on the continent. Consisting of vast dunes and open savannas, this desert environment isn't suitable for most other tribes. Their kingdom borders the Sky Kingdom and the Ice Kingdom.
Despite their large quantity of land, SandWings are actually not very high in population; more than SkyWings or especially NightWings, but fewer than most. SandWings are largely nomadic, not living in one particular place for their whole lives; instead relying on sparse oases and rivers spread throughout the desert, and traveling around for food.
Some SandWings, particularly those seeking refuge and safety from war, may choose to spend most of their time in small cities like the Scorpion Den, or border towns like Possibility and Sanctuary. Even then, many prefer to stay on their feet and travel often, reserving their town homes for sleep, rough weather or retirement.
Similarly, many SandWings working for royalty may choose to live in the Stronghold.

NightWing Territory

NightWing territory, the smallest and most uninhabitable, is home to the declining population of NightWings. It does not directly border any other kingdoms, but does have an animus-conjured portal to the Rainforest Kingdom.
Despite all the odds, NightWings manage to survive here on the small (near completely ash-polluted) ponds dotting the island, and by using desalination devices to convert seawater into drinkable water.
The prey on their volcanic home is close to non-existent; consisting almost entirely of occasional seabirds, crabs, beached sea turtles, and fish caught far out at sea using nets; although as time goes on, fewer NightWings are in good enough health to carry fish-filled nets back home.
Their fortress is half-collapsed due to a volcanic eruption, and the air is so hot, heavy and sulphuric that one might find it almost impossible to breathe if you hadn't been born there. What a pity.

Blank Version

*You may use the blank version of the map for personal things as long as credit to Thorne & I is given! Tag me if you do :D I'd love to see!
This has been in the works probably the longest of anything I've made in relation to my WoF headcanons. I swear I've redone this entire map 3 or 4 times. After a year and a half, hopefully this is the last!!
I hope y'all like it!!
Huge thanks to my friend Thorne for her contributions to the climate placing, I wouldn't have been able to make it look at ALL natural without her help.
If you have any questions or suggestions for edits/additions please let me know! My ask box is open too.
Since I've seen these been floating around and I've gotten back to rereading the series, I thought I'd give some color headcannons myself!
MudWings: They are mostly browns, blacks, and oranges, with yellows, greens, and reds being uncommon, and purple being somewhat rare. They often have spots, a piebald pattern, or what is called the muddy pattern, where either their feet or their whole legs has this soft wave of a darker color. This pattern is seen as a sign of strength in some circles. Their wing membranes are mostly solid in color, though spots and "mud splotches" have been documented. Their eye color can range from browns to oranges to the rare yellow, with hints of darker colors in them. Horn color ranges from browns, reds, grays, pinks, and rarely purple.
SandWings: Yellows, bone white, and beiges are common, and it covers most of their body so they can relax in the sand safely. Their sail, wing membrane, and underbelly are often the most patterned and colored, with copper colors, bronze colors, to rarely gold colors, including rose gold. This also qualifies to their tail barb, which also has black in its color range (some legends say gold colors used to be how you tell who had royal blood)
Sometimes a SandWing will have patterns, like the black diamond pattern we've seen, and the brown spot pattern on Queen Thorn, but they also have many other kinds, like the dapple pattern, where random scales on their sandy body are darker or lighter in color. Their eyes are mostly black all over, though around where their iris is, they have pops of sparkling color that ranges from orange to gold to white to the very rare blue. Horn color ranges from browns, blacks, and reds, rarely having veins of gold in them.
SkyWings: Reds, oranges, yellows, pinks, purples, and whites are super common, though white SkyWings are often mistaken as being "unlit", like how sometimes twins of firescales are. Uncommonly, a SkyWing can have a coal black in their scales, though none have been seen being completely coal colored. The rarest color is a fiery electric blue all over, looking like a living blue flame. SkyWings with this color are often seen as sacred, as they are the color of the hottest fire, so often they are pulled up in ranks so they can added to the royal bloodline.
SkyWings sometimes have piebald patterning, or, in slightly more rarer cases, the harlequin pattern, where all of their top scales interchange from two or more colors, looking as colorful as a RainWing. This often gets the dragon shunned. Their eye color ranges from red to orange to yellow to pink to the rare purple. Firescaled SkyWings always have blue. Their horn color ranges from browns, blacks, deep reds, to purple, and sometimes they have pops of gold in them.
SeaWings: Greens, blues, purples, and grays are common, though gray is often considered unattractive due to it resembling the color of dead coral. Pink and silver is uncommon, and the rarest color is a bright dazzling red. Red SeaWings are sometimes called "sharkblood" SeaWings, and often are made into violent warriors, for red is considered a frightening color in SeaWing society. The most common pattern is the bubble pattern, where bubble looking spots gather around the face, feet, tail, and wings. Rarely, they have arrow shaped stripes going down their back, which can be a lighter or darker color. Wing membrane patterns have a lot of diversity, though the royal family has the most extravagant pattern. You can trace the family history of a SeaWing by finding their pattern in old scrolls of SeaWing bloodlines. Their eye color ranges from blues, greens, purples, grays, to the rare pinks, reds, and yellows. Their horn color ranges from deep blues, deep purples, grays, and uncommonly pink.
RainWings:.....☆~E v e r y t h i n g~☆ (unless deformed, then shades of green they are stuck with)
IceWings: Blues, whites, silvers, and soft purples are common, though purple IceWings used to not get as much respect for having an "undignified" color back in the day. Very rarely, they can be greens or yellows, though these dragons used to be killed off because they didn't conform to IceWings standards. Their underbelly is usually darker in color, back lighter in color, and they have dark markings near their eyes, which is how they can look at bright light and not blind themselves. An iridescent and glittery effect is always present in IceWing scales, making them shine and gleam brightly like stars.
Melanistic IceWings used to appear in the tribe, but they were all killed off for resembling NightWings. IceWing patterns come in spots around the face, wings, tail, and feet. The shadow pattern, like what Snowfox had, is sometimes seen in royal IceWings to this day. They can also be piebald with their other colors. The siamese pattern is also common, and quite well loved. There is one rare pattern called the diamond head pattern, where the IceWing's top scales on their head resembles a diamond, while the rest of their body has this soft, diamond dust pattern.
These dragons are seen as natural born leaders, so are often brought into the royal line. IceWing wing membranes sometimes have a snowflake pattern, or little colored gem shapes. Their sclera is black, and their eye color ranges from blues, purples, silvers, whites, to the uncommon greens, to the rare yellows. Their horns and ruff sometimes are tipped with a deep or light purple, blue, white, and rarely green or yellow.
NightWings: All kinds of blacks are seen in their scales, though, like the RainWings and IceWings, they too have a soft iridescence to their scales sometimes, which brings out pops of color. Common deep colors are green, brown, purple, and blue. Some common patterns are silver bands that can go around the snout, legs, body, and tail, like the single circlet we've seen on Fatespeaker. Albino NightWings have been seen, and were used respected and seen as sacred, until the IceWing war happened, and so they were killed off. Piebald NightWings are uncommon, though they are well respected when they appear, as they are deemed beautiful and "Still have enough NightWing in them, unlike those albinos.."
The silver scales under their wings can make out all kinds of shapes, from showing the plain night, to having a moon, sometimes even showing a constellation. The membrane itself can also have swirls of colors, making their wings look like the vast cosmos. In seer NightWings, they have a full moon-like scale in the middle of their forehead, like how mindreaders have teardrop scales from the corners of their eyes. Their eye color comes in black, brown, deep red, deep blue, deep purple, deep green, to the rare silver, sometimes having flecks of other colors. Horn color ranges from black, purple, gray, blue, green, to the rare silver and white.
