is it better to speak, or to die?
theological analysis of montero music video by lil nas x that no one asked for
The first scene is in The Garden of Eden. All Abrahamic religions have some variation of the same creation story, and they all condemn homosexuality. In the first shot, Nas is presumably representing Adam, sitting under the tree. The serpent is the Devil. The devil in the form of a serpent is often symbolic of temptation and corruption. The Devil came to Eve in the form of a serpent to plant the suggestion of eating the forbidden fruit.
Nas is initially startled by the serpent, afraid of giving in to temptation and corruption because of what God said, but he eventually gives in after heās told heĀ ālives in the darkā andĀ āhe can if Eve aināt in his Gardenā by the serpent. Making homosexuality, not the consumption of the forbidden fruit the original sin. It is noteworthy that the forbidden fruit was from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, shedding more light on the lineĀ ā you live the dark , I cannot pretend.ā
The camera the cuts to Plato quote summarising his take on soulmates. As Plato puts it: āAccording to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves.ā
This myth is, not surprisingly ( since Plato was a Greek philosopher) not unwelcoming to queer people. This āother halfā could be any gender.
The next shot is Nas on Earth, the set is deliberately reminiscent of Ancient Greco-Roman empires. Nas even wore sleeveless t shirt that looks a modern take on a roman soldiers armour to his Genius interview. He is stoned to death by the aristocrats. Ironically enough the Roman empireās persecution of Christians' and acceptance of homosexuality among upper class citizens is almost as infamous as the present day Christian persecution of queer people. Nas wears a pink fur outfit here, whereas the aristocrats wear blue with eye makeup that makes their eyes appear icy cold , supposedly representing the strict binary gender roles inĀ mainstream culture. Nas is smiling, defiantĀ until his dying breath.
The newly martyred Nas floats to Heaven, anĀ iridescent glow encasing him. A rainbow, if you will. Mankindās suffering on Earth is said to be purification in the from of punishment from the original sin, after which we are free to go to Heaven, but Nas CHOOSES not be cleansed from his sin. He turns back on Heaven ,on his own terms.
Nas takes inspiration from FKA twigsā Cellophane music video and uses strip tease as a visual metaphor, the pole being the intermediary between two spiritual realms. Even though the medium of storytelling is same , the stories Nas and twigs tell, are different.
The pole paired with Nasās boots and Satanās outfit might be a homage to bdsm and leather in underground gay cultures. He is finally reunited with his lover from the beginning of time. This reunion, along with the outfits, is a nod to the sexual. emotional and intellectual freedom he gained by denouncing Heaven.
If Iām being honest I have no idea what the killing Satan and taking over Hell meant, but it was iconic.
@puffytypetosser that is a very good take on it! And it fits plotwise, on a religiously symbolic level though; after God cast Adam and Eve out of Eden, Satan challenges God to prove his creation's loyalty to him, those who would succeed in proving their loyalty by resisting temptation and leading virtuous would go to Heaven, the rest would suffer eternal damnation in Satan's realm. Nas rejects Heaven and snaps the Devil's neck to say he won't play by either of their rules, he won't be caught in the crossfire of two beings' egos. He doesn't need to prove himself.or be purified ,he can just be himself.
I've seen a lot of posts saying the clergy all being played by lil nas x could represent internalized homophobia, which makes this conclusion to self acceptance and devil may care attitude all the more satisfying.
Iād like to add the blue outfits of the Romanās were made of denim, a traditionally masculine fabric in American history, and the devil appearing as a serpent may also be an allusion to phallic imagery.

Kurt: And The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Santana : And Freddie Mercury in drag.

Twenty years was yesterday, and yesterday was just earlier this morning, and morning seemed light-years away.
āIām like you,ā he said. āI remember everything.ā
I stopped for a second. If you remember everything, I wanted to say, and if you are really like me, then before you āleave tomorrow, or when youāre just ready to shut the door of the taxi and have already said goodbye to everyone else and thereās not a thing left to say in this life, then, just this once, turn to me, even in jest, or as an afterthought, which would have meant everything to me when we were together, and, as you did back then, look me in the face, hold my gaze, and call me by your name.

Is it better to speak or to die?
Iāve only spoken once and I don't think Iāll make that mistake again. Don't get me wrong I talk a lot, but I don't speak very much. I dont go into the details of my feelings and I don't confront people with them either. I did once and I regretted it instantly. I spoke and it was liberating for the two minutes before I got a response. The second I got a response it settled. I spoke. I finally did it, but it made me want to die. At least if you don't speak you have the comfort of dying with your own words. The words you placed upon yourself. The words you stayed up all night pondering about. I spoke once and the pain that came with it was unbearable. I will never again put myself in a vulnerable position that gets me caught in the crossfire of someone else's issues. I never want to feel what I felt that day. Having your deepest insecurities reassured by someone you care so deeply about is the worst pain I've ever endured. Saying I was sad is an understatement. What I felt was more than sadness. I was ashamed and filled with regret. Iād never felt regret to that extent before. It caused a sort of depression that I had never experienced. Well maybe depression is a euphemism for what I felt but that's the best way I can put it into words. I would rather die a million times if it meant that I never had to feel whatever it was I felt that day.

if eve aināt in your garden...
so how about that new lil nas x video, huh
Honestly, I cant see Dave and Klaus the same way anymore.
