Here's another creature of mine, the PinPin. The PinPin is a timid animal living in herds that brows the seasonal plains and bushlands of their dry home controlled by a short rainy season and a long dry season. Here's a creature I've kept for so many years! It doesn't have a species name, but this family of dangerous reptiles are called viri [vee-ree]. Two first images are recent from a test to redesign the basic viri design. I still have some work to do to make the physiology to work, but i'm getting there😄 3rd picture is the first time drawing it back in 2011 or 2012, and the 4th pic is the plasticine model that started it. It's been re-worked a couple of times and had some material and design added to it, but it's still the same model. First entry of the year! This cat like creature is called a Jahor. It's a big, cunning ambush predator said to be smarter than some people! They have powerful front limbs used for climbing, breaking the back or neck of smaller prey, and wrestling large prey to the ground so it can use its deadly accuracy and 5 inch canines to deliver the fatal blow. Jahor social structures are complicated, but males seem to govern large territories overlapping several female territories. Cubs stay within the mother's territory until they're 2 years of age before they split up to find their own place in the world. I've been a bit busy with job searching lately, but I finally tried out Sculptris which I've had on my computer forever! Turns out it's pretty nice to work in and it feels a lot more like working with clay than what Mudbox ever did! I'm still figuring it out, but I managed to make a PinPin head on the 2nd try! I never posted this here?!😧here's my entry for the #fluffneckchallenge that TheDubstepAddict on deviantart started. They found a unidentified theropod dinosaur in a museum and wanted people to recreate what the fossil looked like. The fossil had a lot of detail, and I thought I saw some pathologies on its hands and tail, which made me think that it possibly had been in a fight or had been picked on right before it died. In hindsight, I think I should have given it more bruising and more ruffled feathers. Not sure if image quality is that good? But here's the finished harpy, coloured with watercolours! I'm not working with watercolours that much, but I enjoy it, it's just scary to work with it compared to say digital colouring, as you can fuck up and then that's that drawing gone. Anyone got any tips on straightening the paper out? Just scan it? Laminating it? I know my paper's not really meant for getting wet, so I'd be happy to take tips on what to paint on too 😋 Anyway, here you can see that the modern harpy has taken pre-existing traits from the classic harpy, and made it look more humanoid. It's skin has also gotten less orange, and its head more compact, bringing the facial features closer and making it look more humanoid. In broad daylight it looks like an ugly hag at best. I keep finding pictures I thought I posted a long time ago, but didn't! This creature here is called a Napuuna. They are huge, mammalian creatures resembling duckbilled dinosaurs in physique, although they "only" reach up to 5 meters in length, and 2-3 tonnes. Mainly quadrupedal, they can rear up on their powerful hind legs to for example brows tall foliage, intimidate rivals and threats, and to move faster. Breaking the radio silence with a post with wyverns! It's #smaugust so what better time is it to revisit my fantasy world's take on wyverns, dragons, serpents/worms and drakes!? Just plotted down a note on the wyvern phylogony, making a distinction on what animal lineages converged, and what separates them. As of now there's an archosaurian (dinosaurs, crocodiles, pterosaurs) lineage, and a squamatan (lizards) lineage. . . I'm still working on the sculpture of the terror bird, but I'm also taking some well earned time off after working A LOT, and i'm also using this time to reflect and heal after being close to burning out, and transitioning between life stages. Here's an oldie ca 2015 I believe! My take on a werewolf on a small page. I make werewolves have shorter upper arms and thighs, longer and more narrow hips/pelvis, deeper chests, and longer wrists/ankles. Not changing too much on their bodies other than an increase of hair, putting them in the gray zone between being VERY hairy, and having a thin coat of fur, and adaptations towards canine locomotion. The head on the other hand, I find that I prefer having it fully transformed from shoulders up, to that of a wolfs. Also, thumbs and big toes shrink and move further up, but retain opposability! Their hands can't pick a lock, but they can definitively open a door or grab a pitchfork! The big toes actually make them a more nimble climber and allows them to sort of grab hold of say a branch or the corner of a building. Here's the cockatrice profile! (I think i might paint this one) . The cockatrice is a small wyvern, about the size of a turkey. It's a highly aggressive species, particularly against mammals for some reason. It's not know why, one theory is that mammals around its size are fought or chased off as they represent competition for its food sources, or that the cockatrice makes their territories as safe they can for their offspring. It's not certain wether this behaviour is gender based, or based on the presence of young or anything at all really. Its aggressive nature is also highlighted in its throat pouch; which is adapted to build up a potent blast of noxious and paralyse inducing gass, instead of the normal gass spray/leak of the archosaurian wyverns and the wyrms. The throat pouch is used for either display purposes, or for food/water storage, like the pelican, in many archosaurian wyverns. It is said the mere gaze of a cockatrice is enough to paralyse or even kill one, but its more likely that if you're close enough to look one in the eye, it's probably realised its foul gass in a steady manner instead of its usual blast or spew. . I've started designing several wyverns of late, and have sorted them in archosaurian (dinosaurs, crocodiles, pterosaurs) and squamatan (lizards and snakes) lineages, that I'll go deeper in on at a later time. I enjoy this a lot, and I need it for a long running world building project I've first gone to work at more the past year. My birthday is up so I will be able to get some more material, and with that I'm planning my next sculpt, which will be more ambitious! This time I will make a proper diorama of a #majungasaurus scavenging a drowned #rapetosaurus . However, I haven't decided yet if I'm adding any more creatures like #mahajangasuchus or a small dinosaur lurking around, waiting for their turn to feed. Some progress shots from a newly done commission of a thylacoleo carnifex. Looks rather alien and bony doesn't it? Steelwire armature padded with tinfoil, bound by soft steel wire, basic skull and skeletal structure, and premade custom size eyes and very rudementary anatomy "filling". Finished product up on Firday 10th. . Been thinking about doing process videos/time-lapse videos of sculptures. Would you be interested? . Been a few hectic and exhausting weeks! Thylacoleo carnifex enters the arena! Thylacoleo, commonly called the "marsupial lion" was the largest carniverous marsupial to have ever lived, and could reach about the same weight class as an African lion! Some of it's closest relatives are the kangaroos and wombats. It has a series of adaptations suggesting it stems from an arboreal ancesstor, and it may have evolved carnivory from a mostly herbivorous diet along its evolutionary tree. It actually doesn't have usable canine teeth like most carnivorous mammals do, instead it used its well developed incisors, possibly in combination with its meathook "thumb" claws to deliver a fatal bite to the neck or back of the skull of its prey. . Unicorns! I'm on my way to Berlin for a short week so i nabbed some pictures of my page of unicorns. This feels very relevant atm because I've been looking up horse evolution and trying to find a good point for unicorns to branch off from horses, and through my reseearch I've seen some nice mounts/life reconstructions that seems to be in the NHM of Berlin, so I'm actually a little stoked over that specifically! Anyway, here are two of the first possible members of the unicorn family representing their respective theories on when the split happened. First theory is that of protoceratherium, a small animal that shot off from the likes of eohippus. The second theory is that they split off from the likes of mycohippus, a part of the genus equus, with unoceratherium. Their longer legs allowed them to partake in the grassland ecosystems aswell as their prefered forest bioms, with a better survival chance than their predecessors, and their basal three hoofed legs gave them advantages of stealth and grip on the slippery forest floor. Next up on the unicorn tree, we have an, as of now, unnamed species, descended from the unoceratherium (2 image). This species was more adapted to open grasslands than it's predecessors and the two last lines of unicorns, both its descendants, or very close relatives. The previously three hoofed feet are now mainly monodactylous, it's other digits being lifted off the ground, like the artiodactyle posterially positioned toes. It's horned is larger, slightly curved, and is now "twisted" in a corkscrew manner. This species likely went extinct from preassure by climate, hunting, and being out competed by bovids and cervids, and also the other equids like the larger wild horse. .
