Good anatomical comments: wrists should be near crotch, torso is roughly two ribcages tall, hands are about the size of your face

Bad anatomical comments: “girls have smaller, thinner shoulders while males have broad ones”, “women have soft faces while mean have harsher features”, “women should have wider hips”

Me after completely picking apart a book, criticizing the characters endlessly, nitpicking everything: it was great, you should read it.

"It is so easy for people to have sympathy with suffering. It is so difficult for them to have sympathy with thought."

𝑶𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒓 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒆

Grievous beyond comprehension, utterly disgraceful, and above all dismaying, but a fact nonetheless; people would rather suffer, as it is, regarding any efforts, for many, easier, than the actual action of thinking.

Perfectionism is very addictive because it is very seductive. It’s so great to think ‘There’s a way I can do things where I can never be held in judgment by other people, that I can totally escape criticism.’ But it doesn’t work.

Dude trust me constructive criticism about your fanfic or fan art is not hate. I think people nowadays has becoming too allergic to a valid and constructive criticism that can actually help you to write.

I get it fanwork is an escapism too but constructive criticism that you can tell is well thought out is not hate or an attack about you personally

Book criticism of “The Expanse” series

So, I read books, and I like to write about my impressions. Here is, what I’ve written in a public facebook post this morning about the expanse:

Public book criticism time! 🙂 Today: “The Expanse” (novel series) or “Leviathan Wakes”, “Caliban’s War” and “Abaddon’s Gate” by James S. A. Corey (which is an author’s duo consisting of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck) – also now a SyFy series “The Expanse”.

It’s hard to describe the plot without major spoilers, so I just say it’s set a couple of centuries into the future, humanity has settlements all over the solar system, on Mars and Jupiter’s moons, there are major physical and political differences between the 3 fractions (people from Earth, Mars and the “belt”), growing up in low gravity leads to people having long extremities, being dressed up in space suits to communicate by gestures (nodding with the hands instead of the head for example), and everyone distrusting everyone from somewhere else. Some very disturbing events happen in this setting which is already full of tension, so the story spans over three books to describe where all of this leads to.

Disturbing is a good attribute in my opinion, especially for the first book (“Leviathan wakes”) – some of the elements described were haunting me a bit later, again, I don’t want to spoil anything but let’s say, it’s been graphic enough for me (OK, I don’t watch too many horror movies anyway so your mileage may vary). I am very fond of “near future” science-fiction, this is a genre which works without much “deus ex” technology and provides enough present-time technological elements so you can identify easily with the world built by the authors. It’s also the case here, they still have LED technology and are very fond of their handsets. The books describe some of the causalities of living off-earth quite detailed, someone should make a word count of “gravity well”. 😉

It’s one of those “each chapter is told from someone else’s perspective” kind of books, so you get “internal monologue” from different characters. I don’t know if I’m really too fond of this, but I guess it’s a good way to push the story forward and also makes TV adaption easier (hat tip to GRRM). Speaking of GRRM, the writers are members of a New Mexico author’s association where GRRM also is participating, in one of the interviews they value the imput they got from this group during the creative process. Overall, I liked reading “The Expanse” series very much, I stumbled upon it at Fefe’s blog and haven’t been disappointed. It’s one of the books you can’t put out of hand easily because the story is proceeding fast-paced and you get to like the characters. I didn’t need the graphic horror elements, but on the other hand they were adding up to the drama of the situation. It has enough politics, technology and psychology to build a well-round world and vivid characters, each book of the series presents different aspects and thus doesn’t repeat itself.

Read it, if you like science-fiction, space ships and have a faible for the military or political culture of the United States of America (knowledge of which doesn’t hurt to see where they’re coming from).

FYI Authors and artists love Good Criticism.

"Was this made by AI?" is not Good criticism. It is an accusation based on everything that seems "off" and "bad" to you.

Believe it or not, humans are NOT perfect creatures. We are completely capable of making shit media without a machine doing all the work. Every work has notable flaws and accusing every flaw as "AI" does not highlight them. If anything, it's not even stating the flaws in the work at all, it's just well...

Blaming everything on a Machine that doesn't exist!

Stop accusing everything you don't like/that isn't perfect as "AI". It undermines the flaws we have as humans and how we can fix them.

unpopular opinion but chapter 9 is definitely the weakest episode of the show. it’s not bad but in comparison to the rest of the show it’s subpar. plot-wise it’s just a rehash of chapter 2 (fighting a big sand monster in return for getting back something valuable) and chapter 4 (arming the villagers) but without adding the same emotional weight or new insight into din’s character.

most of it just seems irrelevant. it was definitely too long in proportion to its importance — really the only point of the episode was to introduce boba and cobb for later episodes. i wish the main conflict had been around boba’s armor rather than the fight with the krayt dragon because that was actually relevant to later themes in the season, while the krayt dragon was just like... big scary monster. that’s it. you could substitute any other antagonist and it wouldn’t change anything. i felt similarly about din - this was the first episode in the show where some of his lines and actions felt like something anyone would do or say. there were just a lot of things in this episode that i didn’t feel like there was strong reasoning behind their inclusion.

Above Is A Picture Of An Auction For An All Black Test Cap. I Was Alerted To This Late Last Night And,

Above is a picture of an auction for an All Black test cap. I was alerted to this late last night and, like everyone else who found out about it, was quite saddened by this.

All Blacks test caps are extremely prestigious and rare. They're only ever given to those who play an All Blacks test match. To date, only 1,108 caps have ever been given out in the 127 year history of the All Blacks. These caps have to be earned, and they are only given out to the very best. To be given one of these is an honour. Which is why it was so sad to see one of these up for auction last night.

Shayne Philpott was the All Black who put this cap up for auction. Google his name and the first thing that comes up is an article deriding him as one of the worst All Blacks ever. He played 2 test matches in the 1991 Rugby World Cup and was never a considered a starting player. His games was criticised to the point where he still gets given abuse by the public. It got to the point where he no longer wanted this memento of his time spent as an All Black. How awful is that?

Philpott would have devoted hours upon hours of time training and slogging away until he reached his ultimate goal, only to be called the worst person to have ever played in his position. Ever. And he still hears about it 20 years later. That's gotta be heartbreaking. Unbelievably so.

Sure, you could tell him to harden up. He's already hard. He's taken crap from All Blacks/New Zealanders (there isn't a difference. Don't kid yourself) fans since 1991. You put up with that shit and see how you handle it. What he put with was bullying. It was abuse on a national level. And you can bet that there were dickheads who came up to him in the street or while he was by himself and let him have it. The worst part is that you still see this today. Look at the crap Stephen Donald goes through. Google his name and it's distressingly easy to find people throwing death threats at him or screaming for him to leave the county and never come back. Fuckin hell.

Have we forgotten that these players are people too? As it really so damn hard to be polite and respectful/not act like an asshole? Sure, have your opinion don't be a dick about it. I'm not gonna stop that. I'm guilty of going too far as well. Some of it's on this blog. But surely we know where to draw the line? Please don't prove me wrong.

I don't have any answers here. I just think it's sad that a guy who worked and sacrificed for years to achieve a incredible goal received so many knocks that he decided to sell a something that symbolises his achievement. His since withdrawn the auction, but that was only after the kind words of some people in the question and answers section.

I really fucking hope that the All Blacks win the 2011 Rugby World Cup. I don't want to think about what this country and their 'fans' will do to them if they don't.

I which I could stop caring what other people think and be confident in my opinion and just take the chip off my shoulder

But I fear I’m just gotta get trampled, kicked, beaten and spat on again

It feels like it’s better to be a pile of broken glass that broke from fragility than toughen up because it feels like you’re toughening up into a punching bag for everyone to abuse

I have OPINIONS about the Minecraft Movie trailer.

This was originally a comment I made on Youtube under the official trailer, but I felt it would be seen more here. I have a lot to say so bear with me:

This would be a 1000% better movie if it were completely animated. The people look so out of place in the world, and it's not in a good way where there's some deeper meaning behind it, it just looks like they're standing in front of a green screen. I also don't get the half-realistic look they're going for with the creatures and environment. It looks like one of those weird "realistic" Minecraft shader/texture packs, and it's just off-putting. If it were just animated (I'm thinking Minecraft story mode style) it would work much better visually. It's sad because I'm pretty sure Jack Black would give an amazing performance in this movie, but it'll just be overshadowed by how bad and low quality it looks.

Not to mention how the story will work. Minecraft has SO MUCH content in it, that it can't all be translated into one movie. And there is no one way to play and beat Minecraft, so there is no one story to follow. I am really concerned on how they will interpret and write the story of the movie.

If I were to make a suggestion based on my opinion on how they could make a better movie, I would say: Don't just stick to one movie. Either do a series (again, like Minecraft story mode. That show was just good by itself, and probably a better representation of Minecraft than this movie will be) OR make it a trilogy, (at least 3 movies) kinda LOTR style with a more fantasy plot. It could be like a team of adventurers trying to defeat the Ender Dragon, going through the Nether, different biomes, meeting pillagers, and the Warden on the way. I just can't say in good faith that what they have right now will turn out to be that good.

I seriously hope this is a Sonic Movie situation and they are able to remake the entire style of the movie, but I really doubt that.

ok so yeah i’m like ~830 episodes into op, but that doesn’t mean i enjoy every single thing about it. yk???? like obv oda’s a piece of shit whose only redeeming quality is his criticism of the fantasy government he created (despite not being critical of the actual government as far as i’m aware) .. being trans and a one piece fan is like very strange but also the animanga r just the source material and the way i interpret the characters is up to me!!!!!!!!! anyways if u want to consume op u should be 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️ it bc oda doesn’t need or deserve ur money.. (not a comment on how you should treat the artists bc they def deserve to be paid, but r also semi-complicit in the misogyny & homophobia/transphobia present in op)

If familiarity breeds contempt, is that why we are often our own worst enemy?

The stars burn brightly as they consume themselves. Fireworks are at their most spectacular before they fizzle into nothingness.

Is perfection always worth the price it exacts upon us?
