It is deeply, deeply beneficial to TERFs if the only characteristic of TERF ideology you will recognize as wrong, harmful, or problematic is “they hate trans women”.
TERF ideology is an expansive network of extremely toxic ideas, and the more of them we accept and normalize, the easier it becomes for them to fly under the radar and recruit new TERFs. The closer they get to turning the tide against all trans people, trans women included.
Case in point: In 2014-2015, I fell headlong into radical feminism. I did not know it was called radical feminism at the time, but I also didn’t know what was wrong with radical feminism in the first place. I didn’t see a problem with it.
I was a year deep into this shit when people I had been following, listening to, and looking up to finally said they didn’t think trans women were women. It was only then that I unfollowed those people, specifically; but I continued to follow other TERFs-who-didn’t-say-they-were-TERFs. I continued ingesting and spreading their ideas- for years after.
If TERFs “only target trans women” and “only want trans women gone”, if that’s the one and only problem with their ideology and if that’s the only way we’ll define them, we will inevitably miss a vast majority of the quiet beliefs that support their much louder hatred of trans women.
As another example: the trans community stood relatively united when TERFs and conservatives targeted our right to use the correct restroom, citing the “dangers” of trans women sharing space with cis women. But when they began targeting Lost Little Girls and Confused Lesbians and trotting detransitioners out to raise a panic about trans men, virtually the only people speaking up about it were other transmascs. Now we see a rash of anti-trans healthcare bills being passed in the US, and they’re hurting every single one of us.
When you refuse to call a TERF a TERF just because they didn’t specifically say they hate trans women, when you refuse to think critically about a TERF belief just because it’s not directly related to trans women, you are actively helping TERFs spread their influence and build credibility.

This week I had a lovely conversation with an older dyke who reminded me how much a lot of people have always hated TERFs and SWERFs.
She was talking about the time in the 1970s and 1980s when she was a young radical dyke and how many of the awesome dykes in the radical scene were trans women. So I asked her if there was ever any problem with TERFs and SWERFs. She didn’t know those words so I described them. Her reply was (paraphrasing a longer conversation):
“Oh, you mean the political lesbians? That’s what we called them at the time, no one really considered them radical. They hated everyone. They hated bisexual women who dated men. They hated us leather dykes and kinky dykes because they thought we were ‘copying the patriarchy’, they hated trans women. None of us in the radical scene liked them. A lot of them later left and admitted that they were straight but were presured to identify as lesbians in that group because being a feminist to them meant cutting all ties with men. They were like a cult. They often lived together and if you didn’t walk the political line you were dead to them. Intense stuff. ”
And like, I know her memories don’t have global relevance and there have also been places where TERFs had a much more prominent impact on the local radical women’s community, but still, to hear how despised these TERFs have always been by these truly radical dykes cheered me up a lot.
Also, being a lesbian radfem is fucking ironic, because they're acting like radical feminism didn't see and labeled lesbians as hypersexuals and a patriarchy replica for the masc/butch & fem labels and relationships.
why is it that the terf lesbians are always the most disgusting, unashamed and vitriolic in their hatred. terf lesbians imply that sleeping with trans women is a form of a corrective rape and that trans people are disgusting perverts for simply existing. wild.

Just a bit of a reminder: 'Radical Feminism' is not simply 'any feminism that is radical' or 'any feminism based on radical politics', it refers to a very specific branch of feminism centred on bioessentialist ideas, and that views misogyny as the central, most important form of oppression throughout history to the detriment of any other marginalised groups. It is overwhelmingly anti-porn and anti-kink. It rejects any queer label that doesn't meet its prescriptivist definitions, excluding anything beyond their rigid criteria for lesbians, gays, and bisexuals.
Unfortunately, we're not yet at a point where we could reclaim the term, you're best bet is to specify the school of thought ala 'intersectional feminism', 'Marxist feminism' or 'anarchafeminism', if you want to make it clear.
TERFs out here saying you can't be a woman if you don't have a uterus. I didn't realize I was non-binary until my late 30s.
At 31 (family record), I had a full hysterectomy so I could function as a person. Do you have any idea how much pain you have to be in to be 31, no kids, and get your uterus removed?

Anyway, I had a TERF tell me once (before I was identifying enby, so she was only mostly terrible) that, yes, she did see me as less of a woman because I had removed my womb.
Other than fuck TERFs (and radfems and tradfems, the world's worst appetizer platter, truly), I don't know that I had a point here.

Reminder that TERFs don't deserve shit. Take back the labrys flag, remove the genderqueer flag from their grimy fingers. They think they can use the community's symbols for their bullshit and we can't just accept it. We can't just go 'oh, the labrys flag is a radfem symbol' cuz it ISN'T; it's been appropriated much like the swastika has been appropriated by nazis. Bigotry is uncreative, after all.
