spot the difference: impossible edition
in all seriousness, on top we see a “straight boy” who is currently “in love” with a girl, trying to address his “friend” in a “friendly” way. basically imitating heteronormativity because he is confused and almost scared of his feelings. this is literally confirmed later in heartstopper. on the bottom we see… apparently a straight dude greeting his friends normally??? help byler is so canon

just thinking about the fact that byler is so canon because, not even getting into the nitty gritty, it’s canon that eleven is mikes first girl friend. as in female friend. of course he will confuse friendship for romantic feelings because he doesn’t know how to seperate it. the only girl he has in his life is his mum and his sister! how would he know if his feelings are platonic or romantic? and he knows how he is supposed to feel about girls, so he assumes how he feels about his budding friendship with eleven is romance, and he peruses it. with will gone, it’s easy right? only as he gets older, it becomes more and more obvious that the love he feels for will vs eleven is not the same… and it’s not eleven he wants to kiss anymore. (or ever did want to, in fact)
Plan of Attack
Steve isn't stupid, but he thinks it's funny that the kids think he is. One day, when the moment is just right, he will pounce on them with his amazing knowledge, and it will be so funny. It was El, of all people, who caught onto him. He's not surprised. The kids kind of treat her with kid gloves after everything she's been through, and sometimes they treat her like she's a child. While it's difficult for her to talk, it's not because she's stupid. She's smart in so many ways, so when she finds out what Steve is doing, she jumps on board. It was Hopper who figured it out next.
"Why are you guys doing this?" He asked Steve and El.
"Because those kids need to be knocked down a peg or two. They need to know that it's not okay to assume that just because I'm a jock it must mean I'm dumb. They definitely need to stop treating El like she's stupid because she's pretty fucking smart," Steve said.
"We are waiting for the right time to -- what did you say? Oh, yeah. We are waiting to go for the jugular," El said with a grin.
"Mike is the worst of them all when it comes to El," Steve said. "He's the one who we need to take down the hardest."
"I have never been prouder to call you my son," Hop said.
"Uh, you've never called me your son," Steve said, blinking his eyes rapidly.
"That's about to change," Hop said gruffly.
"Uh. . .okay," Steve said, tears pooling in his eyes.
"Come on, Steve, let's go to my room, and we'll work on our plan," El told him, grabbing his hand and dragging him to her room.
Will, who had overheard the whole thing, popped his head in a moment later. He was the only other one of them who had never treated Steve unkindly for being dumb. No surprise there though, Will was an angel.
"Can I help?" He asked, Steve and El grinned at him.

No offense to Mike "it's not my fault you don't like girls," Wheeler, but Will deserves better. I have a feeling that Gareth can be a bit of a grumpy bear like Hopper, and Joyce notices when Will brings him around.
"It looks like we have the same taste in men," Joyce joked.
"Mom!"
Though Will was the one who started calling Gareth his grumpy bear, Joyce loved that and started to call Hopper that as well.

Disclaimer: I got this off the internet so I'm not 100% sure on this information, but it does make sense.
Announcment: It is said that Stranger Things 4 wont be coming out until about May 2022, this rumour isn't hard to believe as in a recent interview Gaten Matarazzon told the interviewer that there are strict rules to follow whilst filming as Covid 19 is still existant. He does confirm that they have gone back to filming and it could take longer as they don't know what the future holds for them as the covid restrictions are slowing down production and the world as this pandemic continues. However at least we know that Stranger Things 4 is still coming out. just a little later than we hoped.
