i dont even know how to hold space for this level of grief when it comes to Nex. i know they weren't the first, i know they won't be the last, i felt similarly after learning about brianna ghey. while it illicits no different level of anger, no different sadness, it feels personal in a way that's rare. its like when i learned about the boys that died from police brutality in my own city. nex looked like my friends. nex looked like me. i heard nex speak and i could see myself at the lunch table across from him. its one of those situations that hits so close to home it might as well have been in my house. i met two kids at a protest last year, two 16 year old trans mascs from south florida, and it was my first time interacting with a trans high schooler since graduating. when i met them i felt so protective and when they spoke at the protest i felt so proud. they were kids, they should've been at home, playing sports, doing homework, not hours away fighting for their lives just to watch their rights taken away right in front of them.

Transphobia hurts all women, including cis women.
Statistics show that harassment and violence against cis women have increased ever since transphobes started to intensify discrimination against our trans sisters, trans brothers, and trans siblings...
This is because, as people have been encouraged to police and persecute trans folk, it has increased the ways in which people police the bodies, rights, and behaviors of women, and to demonize femininity, across the board.
Look it up.
Little cis girls have been harassed on sports fields, in schools, and on playgrounds for being tomboys and "appearing" to be trans; and some cis women have even been murdered on the mere suspicion of being trans.
The solution is NOT to be even more transphobic and find "better" ways to discriminate. 🙄 That is TRASH.
The solution is to stand firmly against the sexism that stands at the ROOT of homophobia, transphobia, and queerphobia to begin with; by standing against transphobia and discrimination against trans people.
The gender binary isn't real, bioesentiallism blows (not in the good way), and patriarchal structures are not worth defending.
Let people be whatever hue and color and texture of gender they are, stop policing them about it!

I'm a cis woman, but the concept of gender euphoria sounds strangely familiar to me.
I get the feeling of being happy and satisfied to be a woman (though, obviously, not happy with the way that some people and some institutions treat me because of my womanhood 😅), on occasion.
I remember the first time that I felt it.
The first time that I realized that I was a girl.
I couldn't have been older than three, though I suspect that I was only two.
I was in the house, playing in the hallway.
Bright sunlight was spilling from the big window above the kitchen counter at the end of the hall, where my mom was at the stove, cooking.
I ran -- or rather partly-ran, partly-pedaled, partly duck-walked towards the kitchen: because I was sitting on top of a tricycle.
And just outside the entrance to the kitchen, there was a full-length mirror.
So as I passed by, I stopped and turned to my left to take a look.
I saw me:
A plump, strong, healthy, brown little girl; sitting on top of a red-and-white tricycle; dressed in a delicate, pale-yellow, tulle-ruffled dress with short poofy sleeves (it had to have been my birthday or something, it was really pretty and nice).
My eyes were dark, deep-brown; and wide from play and excitement. Taino nose. Natural coily afro hair HUGE and out and floating free in a wild halo of airy softness.
I stuck my tongue out of the side of slightly berry-colored lips.
And after a moment, I grinned wide...

It was pure joy, learning that about myself -- seeing myself, recognizing myself -- and feeling that who I looked like matched who I was completely; and being so happy with that knowledge.
I remember my mom's voice, full of mirth and surprise, asking, "What in the world are you doing over there?"
I giggled with a squeal of absolute delight and finished running towards her...

I want that for EVERYONE.
EVERYONE deserves to feel that way.
To look in the mirror, and feel affirmed and at ease and confident in who they are.
I will never understand those who feel that the answer to the pain and discomfort of trans folk is to "just force them to conform".

Pauly Likens Jr., a 14-year-old transgender girl, was recently found murdered.
She was stabbed. Her body was found dismembered in a river; a man was recently arrested for her death. Her cause of death was trauma to her head.
She was supposed to be celebrating her 15th birthday this Saturday.
Her family has started a gofundme to cover her funeral.

Hi, yeah, so you're probably going to block me after this but whatever.
I'm trans. I was born with body parts that assigned me as "female" at birth, but I'm not a girl. I'm agender. And you're probably going to say "That sounds fake" or something along those lines, but it's real and it's who I am. I don't have a gender. I am trans. And I am valid. There's nothing wrong with who I am.
The Cass Review is a really harmful report. It was created for the intent of restrict the rights of trans individuals. There's no harm in letting people get gender affirming care and letting them be who they want to be, and yet people are believing this "report - which, by the way, ignores lots and lots of evidence that shows that gender affirming care helps trans people.
I am not living a lie. I am trying to authentically be myself. People like Hilary Cass are trying to stop me from being myself. People like you are being harmful to trans people.
You don't have to understand my gender. You don't need to understand my dysphoria. But can you at least please not justify and encourage the transphobia that's out there in the world?
To any trans person reading this, especially if you live in the UK, please know that you are loved and you are seen. The Cass Review is a terrible setback in our fight for rights, and I hope things change for the better soon.

The tide has turned in the UK and in Europe. When will American media finally begin reporting on the closing of "gender clinics" and the bans on puberty blockers for children? I figure nothing will happen here in the U.S. until the lawsuits start flooding in. It's already begun. And with proof like the Cass Review and the WPATH files, it's going to be very, very difficult for clinics, doctors, and therapists to continue lying about how transitioning does no permanent and irreversible physical and psychological harm.
nex benedict was 16 years old.
when i was 16, i dressed the same, wore my hair similarly. i wasn’t out as non-binary then, but i had already known at that point that i was different from my peers, and that felt isolating.
when i was 14 years old, my family started to joke that i would not make it to 16. i think it was because i was depressed or wasn’t as good at school as my older sister, but regardless they would joke about it.
i feel sick thinking about how on my 17th birthday, my mom celebrated the fact that i had made it past 16 officially. i got to move out soon after that, and left behind my bigoted town.
nex, as far as i have seen, had a loving family. but they don’t get to make it to 17. they don’t get to keep their supportive and loving family, or maybe the friends that accepted them and made him feel seen. nex doesn’t get to experience trans joy as an adult, or explore their gender more fully, or grow up anymore.
that was stolen from him. and now the government and local officials make monstrous accusations towards him, and try to tell the world something different than what it was: nex was murdered by two girls because this is exactly what the state had expected/hoped would happen. making gendered bathroom bans leads to isolated instances of violence where murderers can easily get away with things, especially when the states that they happen in have harmful views.
nex benedict deserved so much more, morgan moore deserved more, and every trans child in the world deserved their right to live and be happy and it was ripped away from them.
so to any straight ally reading this: it takes no effort to protect trans lives. it means spreading awareness, standing up to people, correcting strangers, friends, family; educating the existing members of communities with knowledge that will support their youth’s generations. it means listening to trans folks, queer folks, and especially queer/trans POCs because it’s them that are being targeted the most, so it’s them that should dictate.
be kind, sharp, and loyal to your trans loved ones, strangers, etc., because if you don’t step up when they are alive then you’ll be sorry when they’re dead.
