Using NVIDIA shaders to gain an advantage in speedrunning my office work
somehow the last couple days ive started accidentally opening the NVIDIA Gaming Overlay during work like sorry i dont want to put shaders on this word document actually. i think its fine without them.
My streamer is not like other speedrunners <3
[Punz: This is like, where a normal speedrunner would reset, but. I’m not like the other speedrunners. I’m bad.]

So before Mario Kart 8 came in and stole all of my time, I was working on a pseudo-speedrunning mappack for Mari0 called Retrush. It involves time gates; the number on the gate is how many seconds the player has to reach the next gate. Hopefully I'll get back into it soon.
Nine years. Sixteen levels. One plumber… with a portal gun.
Retrush, the retro speedrunning level pack for Mari0, is finally out! If you like classic Mario and going fast, this one's for you. Check it out and grab it here:

Retrush is a race against the clock! You have just a few precious seconds to get from checkpoint to checkpoint… but, you have infinite lives - so get moving, and go blaze a fearless trail!

From grasslands and deserts to aquariums and power plants, each level has its own unique flavor and elements. Between familiar SMB/Portal mechanics and new custom elements like Star Shards, there's no telling what's in the next level!

Frequent checkpoints and stars help to ease in novice players, while experts can skip the training wheels and go for the perfect run. Every level can be conquered with pure platforming, or you can use the portal gun to skip sections or find shortcuts. Anything goes!

The graphics are simply recolors of tiles from the original SMB and Lost Levels, but rearranged to create unique structures and landscapes. Further, custom animated tiles and backgrounds truly bring the levels to life. It's a simple aesthetic designed to look better than ever!

Every level also has an extra challenge stage with Red Coins instead of time gates! New obstacles are added for increased difficulty, and the color palettes are changed to make the levels feel fresh. Altogether, that's 16 more levels, for a grand total of 32!

After clearing all 16 main levels, a level select allows you to replay any stages you want - or tackle their remixes. It even saves which remixes you've cleared!* What happens if you clear them all…?
* Mari0 does not have autosave! Be sure to pause and save from the menu periodically.

Ready to play? Let's go! Head to this link to grab both the game (Mari0) and the level pack (Retrush): https://retrush.skysometric.co/#download
Once you have both, open the game and choose Select Mappack from the menu. Drag Retrush.zip onto the game window and you're ready to play!

…and yes, this really took me nearly NINE YEARS to finish! That's like a third of my life! But today just so happens to be my birthday, and what better way to celebrate than to wrap this up and start a new chapter? 🎉🎉🎉

played sm64 last night and the night before and even tho I'm not like on fire for it i've had an interest in playing again and I've been enjoying the feeling of the movement
but my hands are in p bad shape afterwards and although I can start doing wrist strengthening exercises again
it might just be time to finally admit that its over
I don't want to though, when the muscle memory is still there, knowing I'm still capable of so much more for myself in this thing I've been feverishly passionate for for this many years
am I really still so stubborn? I feel like I've been fighting against my body my whole life. learning to accept my body through my transition has been an up and down plea to myself to love and care for who I am and what I'm made of. to allow myself to exist as I am and not as some perfect incarnation of myself that lives in my subconscious
and now my body is telling me it can't do this
am I lashing out against my body again? praying that god will allow me, through some absurdity, to be able to play endlessly? or at least until I'm satisfied? it feels like a desperation
my art has been difficult to parse through too. that I don't know my vision or that I don't have like a long term goal or a fire that pushes me through that unknown
and bc I've been so aimless after mario. that I don't really know what I want and have been having incredible difficulty dedicating myself to.. honestly myself and how I want to engage w the world around me, what I want to pursue and why that's important to me
I'm hoping that the philosophy I've been reading can help me find words to articulate my needs and make distinctions btwn wants and needs for my future
and although there are clear tangible goals in my speedrunning idt I have a finish line where I can finally stop and say
that I've done a good job, that I can rest
which means that it probably won't matter if I could play either way
the problem has never been the game, mario means a lot to me and I personify him a lot by saying he's been patient and kind and excited w and for me
and that's bc I really do see my playing as a relationship w him. play is a form of language, a form of art and creation
he's been w me thru every stage of my life
ik he'll still be excited and down for anything when i finally stop thinking about speedrunning
and god do I love him for that
enemies have set attacks with hurtboxes but will bodyblock the player if you try running through them (walking is fine) You get one new mobility option after each main boss. The game has a main hub zone that gives access to each of the 6 main levels. The later levels are locked behind platforming challenges that will require certain abilities or creative use of movements to reach. The fairies each hang around each section of the hub and are each associated with a level. Saving occurs upon acquiring a major collectible (weapon, stat upgrade) or activating a time gate (big purple clocks)
I haven't tried speeding through the game yet but with the high mobility and fast-paced combat, i could see people optimizing it below an hour pretty quickly. So far the average playtest blind playthrough has been 5-6 hours and my own are about 3.
....hi

Irredeamable is my latest project, a semi-linear action-adventure game, where you control this little bundle of anger and angst in her quest to recover her lost powers and bring forth the end of the world. The game has a heavy emphasis on combat, with a bit of platforming, and a whole lot of boss fights. There is also some mysterious lore to be uncovered by those willing to brave the world's deepest, darkest depths. My main goal with this account is to spread awareness of the game as i work on it. I'll post threads about the game content, characters, and world, with occasional distractions such as my unhinged game design thoughts and ideas. Don`t hesitate to share thoughts and engage, i love nothing more than to talk about writing and game design.
Any plans for using the shotgun knockback as a gauss jump/boost, or other advanced movement options for secret hunting/combat mobility?
there are no puzzles or secrets based around it, but the shotgun knockback is very much intended to be used for that kind of purpose by creative players.
Tried out a speedrun of the main game yesterday and managed to get a bit above an hour. I expect that an actual speedrunner could probably do much better as not only am i kind of a casual at this, but since i created the game, i have a pretty rigid view of it and that makes me unlikely to discover certain skips and exploits. I think the game has a lot of potential on that front as it's got a lot of combat and mobility options to explore.

No time to lose Lady, Release is only in 9 days!
every video game released as part of a larger series/franchise should have a mandatory waiting period of 5 years between a game release and any sequels or dlc planned afterwards. not to give enough time to make sure the sequel's good and finished, but to drive speedrunners to the state of content-deprived near-insanity where they start doing ridiculous runs like randomizing npc dialogue or cutting every blade of grass

TUMBLR I HAVE JUST LEARNED SOMETHING AMAZING AND MUST INFLICT IT IN YOU
There is a Japanese water beetle called Regimbartia attenuata. It has developed an incredible adaptation to be being eaten by pond frogs.
It walks out the frog’s butt.
The beetles get swallowed whole, and usually that would be considered Kinda Fatal, but this particular species is just like “DID YOU THINK A FROG’S DIGESTIVE TRACT COULD HOLD ME?!” and proceeds to walk through the frog’s intestines, then presumably stimulate the frog’s hind gut with its legs so that the frog poops. The beetles emerge headfirst and 93% of them survive and live on for weeks afterward.
Apparently some beetles can do this obstacle course in six minutes! (Usually takes a few hours, but some people will speedrun ANYTHING.)
Isn’t that COOL?!

Avatar AU where Aang wakes up like 3 days before Sozin's Comet returns and he has to speedrun the entire series.
