Ableist Language Cw - Tumblr Posts

Why do abled people always fucking suggest the most basic things to “fix” disabled people’s problems/disabilities and act like they know better than we do???

If you, a person who does not live with the disability you’re trying to “fix”, can think of a solution off the top of your head without any research, experience, or even trying to actually understand what we have tried and what we’re actually dealing with don’t you think that we might’ve already or are already trying that???

For me this comes most from my mother saying that I need to change my diet (even though I have so many sensory issues surrounding food and have tried and failed so many times), that I need to lose weight (ma’am I am trying), that I should try stretching (you know what I’ve tried that for years and guess what it just stretches my ligaments because I’m fucking hypermobile and it ends up causes me more pain), that I need to exercise more (I’m trying but I’m also limited by pain. Pain that keeps me from being able to exercise most of the time. Pain that usually gets worse when I try to exercise), that I should try to not use my mobility aids because I’ll become reliant on them (ma’am they help me. They are not hurting me. They are what keeps me able to do stuff you want me to be able to do. Why should I try to not use them???), and so much fucking more

Like seriously abled people stop pretending you know our bodies better than we do I promise you you don’t. Even doctors (as shit as they might be) are supposed to listen to us before they even start to make recommendations (yeah many don’t but they’re supposed to)

This whole obsession with wheelchair users struggling on foot down the aisle at their wedding or across the stage for graduation is 100% powered by ableism.

Some rando: You should think about stopping your prescription

Me: My pills make me not want to die tho

They: You shouldn’t want to die, that’s not normal

Me: Yeah that’s why I’m taking my pills

Sometimes I feel like most who make stuff about YHS have never actually watched the whole show.

and sometimes I feel like y’all have no media literacy

and sometimes I feel like y’all would call me evil and 15 slurs for being non conversely disabled

and sometimes I feel like maybe y’all just made some mistakes because the never actually watched the whole show

and sometimes I feel like y’all only watched Taurtis 2 arc

and sometimes I feel like y’all have really don’t have the basics to media compression and analysis skills.

I’m sick of y’all villanising and ignoring canon mental illness/disability’s and being ablests

anyways if anyone wants to debate tables open.

Sometimes I Feel Like Most Who Make Stuff About YHS Have Never Actually Watched The Whole Show.

So....

Today my mother my big sister n her bf were making ableist jokes....

And I called them out for it but got ignored.

Then after a bath confronted my mother about her ableist language and jokes she made.

Of course ableists get defensive when called out.

YOU ARE NOT A ALLY OR SUPPORTER OF SPECIAL NEEDS / DISABLED PEOPLE IF YOU MAKE JOKES ABOUT RUNNING YOUR CHILD OVER IF BORN VISUALLY DISABLED YOU ARE NOT!!!! 🚫👎🏻❌

I'm trying my hardest not to use ableist slurs or pejoratives anymore.

It's hard. Insults attached to intellect seemed to be the most effective to use against my abusive, fascist father, growing up. The one thing I could call him that would make him and his enablers pause a moment and actually think.

Yet, there's no denying that there are plenty of "dumb", "stupid", "idiotic", "delusional" people who have excellent and kind hearts, and who don't let their insecurities and fears control them in the way that most bigots do.

There are people who suffer from "delusions", yet they DO understand that they are having them…people who nonetheless still care about what the truth is, and who therefore do their absolute best to deal with life and with others with reason and compassion… people who are "delusional", yet wind up doing even better at logic and accepting reality than those who are considered "normal" or "sane".

People who are purposefully ignorant, proudly bigoted, or wilfully cruel?

Those types of folk deserve far, FAR less regard than people who are simply disabled or clinically mad.

There's so much wrong with "everyone is a little bit autistic"

Yes, allistic people might know a lot of facts about the things they like. Yes, allistic people might get a bit overwhelmed or underwhelmed sometimes. Yes, allistic people might not get an expression sometimes, mostly if it's the first time they hear it.

That doesn't make them autistic.

Those traits only make someone autistic when they become disabling. Because, big shock, autism is a disability. Yeah, even if someone is low support needs, because that doesn't mean they don't need any support at all.

Saying "everyone is a little bit autistic" is like saying "everyone struggles with this, so suck it up, you have no right to need help". Which is just pure ableist bullshit. It denies the fact that autistic people have higher support needs than NTs, no matter where in the autistic spectrum they are. We're not "neurospicy", we're disabled, and denying this fact is denying us the right to get the help we need, we deserve, to have a good life.

(yes, this rant is just because I made the awful decision of listening to "neurospicy (interlude)" by Jax. honestly I'd rather be called a slur than listen to that shit again.)

Hi, I’m a little confused on why you say “idiot” is an ableist slur. I understand it can be use to degrade and insult people, but I’m unsure on why it a slur exactly. I’m autistic myself, and would like to know what I should excuse from my language. Could you please explain? Sorry if this is a little rude, I’m genuinely confused.

Hi! No problem! It’s not rude at all; in fact, we appreciate you asking. We are also Autistic (all three of us mods here are! :) and so we like clear explanations too!

Basically, it started out as a term for people with intellectual disability. Articles talking about exactly how it originated get a bit esoteric - I (Mod X) may try to write a post about it if I have time - but here’s an overview!

Ableist Language To Avoid And Acceptable Alternatives – Idiot and Idiotic
-
Idiot and Idiotic are ableist terms, learn why and some alternative words you can use in its place in today's ableist language blog post.

Hope this helps!

Best,

:33 < idont care if youre anti or pro endo, if you use "delusional" or "p*ychotic" as an insult towards ANY system, YOU ARE ABELIST. you are singlehandedly showing off youdo NOT care for people with psychosis, youdo NOT care for people on the schizospectrum, and you are ABELIST TOWARDS YOUR OWN COMMUNITY. JUST BECAUSE THEY HAD ALTERS AS A DELUSION OF THEIRS, does NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO BE ABELIST TO THEM. my god, just leave delusional folks alone if youre gonna be uneducated and reality check them.
