Why the fuck does this dmv not have chairs (i know some dmvs do but in my experience they only gave them to seniors and people with children and those with visible disabilities and I don’t bring my mobility aids cause I’m worried probably for no reason of being some kind of denied or poorly treated or something idk ). I have been standing for an hour and I am in pain but I know if I sit on the ground I probably won’t be able to get up. gahhhh. also the accessible entrance is literally so far from the main entrance like wtf. Also also it’s hot in here cause if so many goddamn people
Why are spaces that are meant to accommodate so many different types of people so damn inaccessible
How most people with invisible illnesses are treated by health care “professionals”
just because you're queer doesn't mean you can't be ableist
Wait what's a buildings fire evacuation plan if you aren't supposed to use the elevator to get down
shout out to “gross” disabled people.
people who can’t shower/bathe people who can’t shave people who can’t wash their clothes people who need help going to the bathroom people who have nasty habits (biting nails, picking nose, etc) people who can’t brush their teeth people who can’t go to the doctor people who can’t clean their room people who can’t make their beds people who vomit a lot people who wet the bed people who constantly have diarrhea people who’s physical deformities are seen as repulsive
and every other kind of person I missed that deserves to be here too.
you are people, first and foremost. your thoughts deserve to be heard, discussed, acknowledged, no matter what. you are not lesser. you are just another person. you should never be ignored for what you can/can’t do. you deserve care.
to abled people: check yourself. make sure you listen. and you can reblog, just don’t derail. maybe don’t add on, either.
It's properly snow season again, so here's a
friendly psa
from your neighborhood wheelchair user.
If your sidewalk is not completely shoveled, it isn't usable.
If you can leave footprints in the snow, the snow is too deep. A wheelchair can't get through
If its a narrow pathway people can 'squeeze through', a wheelchair can't get through
If your sidewalk is pristine but the curb cuts are full of snow, a wheelchair cannot get through.
If wheelchairs can't use the sidewalk, our only option is to use the road, and we don't like that any more than you do.
Sincerely, a wheelchair user in the north who would prefer not to be trapped in my apartment for months on end
You know what? I hate how most people think I'm 100% dependant on my mobility aids. Sure I hobble around with my cane and scuttle on my crutches, but I'm not helpless. They're so surprised when they find out I don't use them at home, or that they can hurt as bad as the disability itself, or that my dependence on them is a fluid thing and changes day by day. We have this idea of how disabled people should be— bound to their aids, miserable, defenseless. These ideas only helped me reject the idea of something wrong with me longer, because I didn't look like those people. Most of the time now, I use my aids when I don't need them just because I feel like I have to look "disabled enough" for people. We've built expectations for disabilities, which is funny, cause you couldn't have picked a more unpredictable thing.
I don't expect everyone to be educated, there are so much more pressing things to worry about, but when you have a friend or family member that's disabled, the least you can do is glance at a few resources online or ask them about it. I'm just so sick of family treating this like a big deal, or nurses holding on to me like a toddler still learning to walk when I need to get on a scale, or co-workers treating my cane laying around like a reverent item i will strike them down for disgracing. It's a piece of shitty metal y'all. I don't have a sliver of trust for that thing. Complaining about how cheaply made a lot of aids are to be priced expensive is a whole other post.
I'm just saying, if there was an immediate danger, you won't see me struggling to get away. I'll have already thrown my cane at them and ran. Yes, I have a disability, but I am not weak. You think these beefy arms are for show? You think this hunk of metal I lug around is soft? You think I made it to the end of the day fighting tooth and nail just to sit down and die? I'm fucking feral, fight me.
Anyway, a big go fuck yourself to the disabled people who sit on a pedestal and throw rocks at their disabled peers for things like "being lazy", "wallowing", "not trying", "being a complainer", "being vague about their disability"
Your body always has new surprises ! You can't be bored with a disability ! Yay !

The autistic urge to have a strict routine at all times VS. the ADHD urge to break that routine constantly in favour of doing something spontaneous/more stimulating.
hey if you’re disabled or chronically ill & have a hard time standing i want you to know that it’s ok to sit down when able bodied people wouldn’t or aren’t. not just in the context of using a wheelchair but just like. whenever. pull up a stool in front of the stove when you make mac & cheese. kneel on a chair in front of the sink when you’re washing the dishes. going outside to smoke/wait for a cab/whatever? pop a squat on the sidewalk/curb/stoop. get a shower chair. it’s not weird or shameful to minimize your pain & it’s not worth wasting spoons just because “normal people would do it standing up”
