Right so, ya know mermaids? Seeing as theyre underwater creatures I'd imagine theyd have gills and the mouth is for eating only. So, why the nose? What's it for?

This leaves us with 2 possibilities

1. The nose is shaped differently to work as a gill

2. Mermaids have no noses

And both of these possibilities points to one shocking truth the world is not ready for

Lord Voldemort, is a mermaid, you heard it hear first. This would also explain his incredible pale skin, fishy eyess, flowy movement and weird ass looking feet.

Convince me I'm wrong

October 5th, 1944. The Great Hall. 9:10 am.

A heavy sigh left your lips as you saw Avery and his group approaching you, a smug look on his face, stirring your eggs around your plate a small smile creeping it’s way onto your face. You had made it to the Great Hall early this morning so you could talk to Tom about some homework, but he was off talking to Professor Dumbledore and you would have to wait for him to come back. If he ever did come back. Sometimes when he spoke to Dumbledore he would spend hours speaking to the old man, and he wouldn’t even realize. The feeling of someone sitting next to you broke your train of thought, flashing Avery a smile knowing he wouldn’t take anything else for a greeting. The boy had been chasing after you for 5 years, and he hasn’t faltered since.

“Good morning, Avery. How did your date with Nott go?” You teased, shoveling a forkful of eggs into your mouth smirking at the blushing blonde. The group of Slytherins who had walked with him to the Great Hall were all laughing, including Nott himself.

“Oh, come off it. You know I only have feelings for you, sweetheart.”

“I’m quite aware. I don’t think that changes how dear old Nott feels for you,” Nott reached over the table grasping Avery’s hand in a dramatic flourish pressing a kiss to the back of his hand, before Avery ripped it out of his grasp throwing a grape at his face, “Hey, that was my grape!”

Avery grabbed a handful of grapes out of a nearby bowl, dropping them hastily in your plate managing to get them all over your eggs. You laughed, shoving him over playfully bouncing a grape off of his forehead. The pair of you had failed to notice the sobering up of your surrounding peers, turning to pop a grape into your mouth.

“Avery. You’re in my seat,” The deafening silence that came from the second Tom had opened his mouth was instantaneous, the once smiling boy’s face turning stone hard moving over to make room for Tom who swiftly sat down next to you. “Everything in order?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good... I’m going to need you to meet me in the Room of Requirement, at midnight... Bring your wand,”

The second bit of his sentence he directed to you, his warm breath just barely brushing over your cheeks nodding at his words turning your head to look at him. His features were harder than usual, his bottom lip had turned a red shade from chewing on it, a habit he had gotten into recently one that he only did when he was worried, an emotion he rarely felt.

“How about we go to Hogsmeade this upcoming weekend? Are you guys willing?”

You chirped trying to ease up the mood, running your fingers through your hair scanning the faces of the boys in front of you and to the right of you. Out of the corner of your eye you saw Tom’s feature soften, his hand reaching out underneath the table to pat your knee ever so softly.

“Why not?” Your eyes flitted over to Tom, a smile sneaking onto your face. “Wouldn’t want to miss out on a chance to give Avery another chance at his date,” Tom jested taking a sip of his juice.

At first they didn’t know if they should laugh, considering Tom’s voice never usually showed any form of emotion other than anger and the occasional joke here and there, until you broke the silence by choking on your orange juice giggling at his comment. After that, they all joined in on teasing Avery whose face was a bright red. Tom made eye contact with you, sending you a playful wink making you roll your eyes.

October 7th, 1944. Honeydukes. 11:25 am.

You snorted as you caught sight of Avery and Nott fighting over the last Sugar Quill, pressing against the tall brunette who was looking down at you a teasing glint in his eyes. The trip to Hogsmeade was a success, you had wanted to boys to forget about their plans for a day, and just go back to being their playful selves and it worked. Lestrange, Rosier and Mulciber had gotten around to buying out most of Honeydukes. Leaving them to amuse themselves to toss Acid Pops at one another, their laughter infectious.

“Tom?” He hummed in response, pressing his hand on the small of your back. The taller man lead you out of Honeydukes, the cold air slapping against your face, giggling as Nott was holding the Sugar Quill proudly in his mouth as the blonde sulked, “I was wondering if we could hang out tonight, like how we used to.” You flashed a warm smile tugging your jacket around you tightly as the cold air threatened to knock you over.

“Sweetheart,” At the sound of that pet name leaving his mouth you tensed up, knowing he only used it when he needed things from you chewing on your bottom lip, “As much I love spending time with you, we have things to do. We can’t keep pushing back the schedule, once we do we’ll never catch up.”

“Tom, please? I just want one night of us being normal. Just you and me, in your room- talking all night like we used to… and I promise, I won’t ask for anything ever again.” Tom faltered for a moment, his eyes closing as he mulled it over turning around on his heels to face you. His large hands cupped your cheeks, tugging you closer your breath hitching.

“You know I’d do anything for you. Anything-” Your eyes flickered down to stare at his lips, making him tense up “Okay. Just... just tonight. And after that-.” He breathed out, his dark eyes piercing your soul moving to release his grip on you. You placed your hands over his, keeping him in place swallowing down your nerves.

“I know, I promise. I won’t ask you for anything else,” You sighed, pressing a kiss to the inside of his palm feeling his grip tighten on you, “Come on, we don’t want to waste the rest of the day away.”

October 12th, 1944. The Room of Requirement. 12:06 am.

A loud cry left your lips, crumbling to the floor feeling your body spasming at the pain coursing through your body. Your fingernails were digging into your palms, blood oozing from how hard you were squeezing your eyesight going hazy. The veins in your neck were protruding, as you let out blood curdling screams into the soundproof room. Tom was stood off to the side his face free of any emotion, watching his best friend getting tortured by Avery whose eyes were full of tears. The brunette had ordered the blonde to do this task to prove his loyalty to him, knowing Avery had a soft spot for you.

“Stop,” The blonde instantly dropped his wand dropping down to his knees from the amount of energy it took for him to send the cruciatus curse, his hands shaking, “Get up, Avery.” The blonde helped himself off of the floor, wiping any sort of emotion off of his face staring down at your crumpled body tears streaming down your flushed cheeks. Even though he had lowered his wand, you could still feel every sting and every prickle of your body.

“Sir,”

“You’re free to leave.”

After several moments of silence, trying to regain your breath as well as attempting to wrap your mind around what had just happened. The entire time you had been friends with Tom, he had never laid a single hand on you. Every time one of his followers tried to cause you any sort of harm he would end up leaving them bruised beyond recognition. This year he had been extremely distant, but you didn’t think that would change anything between either of you.

Not like this.

“Doll... let me help you,” His cold hands helped your burning figure off of the floor and onto a nearby couch, his hands never leaving yours even as you tried to put as much distance between the two of you whining with every move, “Here, drink this. It will help rid of the pain.”

He took a hold of your face, parting your lips as he poured the crimson potion into your mouth your cracked lips wrapping around the cool glass feeling your body practically melt as the effects of the potion instantly began to take effect. One of the many things you were grateful for; Tom’s expertise in Potions.

“Thank you...” You choked out, leaning your head back onto the soft cushions wanting nothing more than to get out of the forsaken room. Even with your eyes closed you felt the burning stare of Tom, shifting so you could face him opening your eyes staring up at him, “Tom. I can feel you staring,”

“I’m aware,” He smiled softly, reaching out to tuck a loose strand away from your sweaty face his heart breaking the slightest bit as he thought back to your ear piercing screams and your thrashing body. He swallowed back his guilt, leaning in to make himself comfortable. “I didn’t want to hurt you-”

“-bullshit.” You scoffed out, trying to ignore the glint in his dark eyes keeping your face stoic, “You know you have full control over your actions, Tom.”

“No. I don’t. I did this without thinking of you, only thinking of Avery proving to me he would do anything I ordered him to without hesitating.”

“Is that all I am to you, Tom? I thought that I meant more to you, that I was a little more than just a fucking doll-”

You had managed to sit up properly, shoving your finger into his chest to show your anger.

“For fucks sake-” The Slytherin boy rolled his eyes at your words, his hands cupping your cheeks pressing his lips against yours catching you entirely off guard.

You knew you should have shoved him off and smacked him across the face but you couldn’t ignore the way he made you feel. His lips moving perfectly in sync with yours. Everything in you felt right, like the stars had aligned. Feeling your heart swell as you allowed his scent to infiltrate your body.

His toned arms moving to hold onto your hips, pulling you closer as your arms wrapped around his neck deepening the kiss.

You feel nothing but pure ecstasy.

A slight flutter in your chest as you felt his cold hands tighten their grip on you.

Tom had never felt anything like this with any of the girls he had slept with. For the first time in his life, he felt something. He didn’t know what it was, but whatever it was, he didn’t ever want it to end. Being wrapped up in your touch, and your warmth he forgot about everything but you. Tom had never in his life felt his mind this quiet before.

He didn’t think about his followers.

The horcruxes.

About how he had deliberately had sent one of his own to cause you harm.

He just felt you.

And that was enough... at least for a moment.

“Tom... you don’t have to do this. We can leave Hogwarts, and then- and then find a place for us to be. Away from the Orphanage. Away from everyone,” His breath came out in shallow breaths, wanting nothing more than to agree with your words. Your doe eyes were looking into whatever he had left of his soul, fighting the urge shaking his head, ripping himself away from you his wand in hand as he shakily let out a breath. “Tom?”

“I may not know what love is, doll, but whatever it is, I imagine it to feel like what touching you and kissing you feels like.” Your heart clenched, knowing there was a but coming, “But I can’t give this up. I have come so far. I’m so close. So close.” Your eyes clamped shut, gripping your wand as you let your head hang at his words. The sensation of tears making their way to your eyes once again washed over you, blinking away tears shaking your head.

“I understand...”

“I can’t have anymore distractions.” He whispered to himself, turning his back to you forcing you to get onto your feet shakily eyeing the brunette. Tom weighed the decisions over in his head, knowing one of them wouldn’t end as well as the other but he knew it would be the most effective.

“Tom-”

“Can you- can you do me one last favor?”

“Anything.”

A beat.

“Close your eyes and stand right there,” You willing shut your eyes, listening to the sound of Tom getting closer to you his warm lips pressing against yours lingering on you momentarily before shuffling backwards. A small smile was on your face, wanting nothing more than to bask in this moment forever.

Tom eyed your swaying form as you shifted your weight. His eyes scanned you head to toe, the way your hair was styled perfectly framing your face. Your breathtaking face, how you held yourself with your hands fiddling in front of you trying to memorize every single inch of your body down to the last freckle on your skin. “You know I care about you, doll. I always will. No matter what...”

“I know, T. But what does that have to do with-”

“I’m sorry, doll.”

“Sorry for what…- ”

“Tom?”

“Avada Kedavra” All you remembered was opening your eyes the second Tom had uttered the curse, your eyes locking together one last time before your once vibrant eyes grew dull your body crumbling onto the ground. The ghost of your smile was evident on your face, the corners of your lips turned up slightly as you laid there on the ground. Tom felt like every last strand of humanity grounding him was gone, as he kneeled down to caress your cheek leaning down to carefully unclasp the necklace from around your neck tucking it into his pocket. He closed your eyes with two of his fingers, standing up to his full height before making his way out of the Room of Requirement without a second glance back. His fingers fiddled with the necklace in his hand, the one that had been around your neck several seconds ago. Three down, four more to go, Tom thought to himself tightening his grip around the newfound horcrux briskly making his way to the Slytherin Common Room where his followers would be waiting.

Your analysis focuses entirely on Snape being irredeemable because he never takes responsibility for the harm he does. Almost all of your quotes in evidence are from his childhood and teenage years, in which he is indeed blind to his own malevolence.

Except this is the whole point of his story of atonement. He was radicalised into walking down a very bad road, and then tried to claw his way out of it. He does eventually take responsibility - as an adult. He commits himself to a dangerous path of spying to defeat Voldemort. He can’t bring Lily back, he can’t undo his mistakes, but he can understand that he was wrong to join the Death Eaters and dedicate himself to a different cause. If he didn’t take responsibility for his choices, he would’ve spent his days mourning Lily on a beach in the Bahamas instead of willingly signing his own death warrant by joining Dumbledore to protect Harry.

Nobody - and I really do mean this - is beyond salvation. Nobody, even those who have sinned gravely, is beyond waking up one morning and choosing to be a tiny bit better than they were the day before, even if they remain imperfect. Its a fundamental part of humanity. It’s a very dangerous road for go down when you dehumanise young people who make terrible choices, write them off as fundamentally evil, and deny them the opportunity to take a different road. Snape remained bitter and cruel and perpetuated the cycle of abuse, but he did in one very vital respect choose a different road.

https://youtu.be/SSH5EY-W5oM?si=XBskWqOT2X0tl0Am

Okay, that's a valid point to be made, I did focus mainly on teenager Snape but only because I thought adult Snape would be obviously interpreted from that point on. The fact is adult Snape doesn't exactly atone for what he did and what he chose to become as much as it looks like he did, simply because his harmful ways didn't affect only Lily, to begin with.

Look, you're starting from a point where Snape's most serious mistake was to turn on Lily and forgetting what I said earlier on in the analysis: Snape's biggest fault wasn't his personal/individual issues, it was his political agenda and beliefs, and what he did in the name of that.

Fascism isn't only a political aspect, because to be a fascist, there's a series of prior beliefs one has to have to be okay with what fascist governments and political groups will do to stay in power. To be a fascist, to openly advocate for what Voldemort and his followers advocated for instead of just going with the flow (which was not what Snape did at all), you just don't "become radicalized" like there's no one to blame here but some notion of propaganda. To radicalize to fascism, you must seek out information about it, advocate for it, and have prior beliefs of superiority that allow you to relate to it in a deep, core level - all of which we already attributed to young Snape in my analysis.

Let's put it this way: fascism is capitalism's emergency button. It'll only arise when capitalism is in crisis, which we don't see in the HP books because it's neither relevant to the story nor it seems that Rowling has the political knowledge to do so. But more than that, fascism is based on colonialist views of the superiority of one versus the other.

Think about what you know about Iluminism: the first thing I learned about it in school is that it was a dichotomous stream of thought - we have a lot of duality in it. In Art, we have the chiaroscuro technique; in metaphysics, we have the discussion about man versus God; and in politics, we have the "illuminated" man (white, heteronormative, cisnormative, high-class, educated men) versus barbarians or savages (non-white men or women).

The colonialist way of thinking stems from this very deep-rooted belief that some people are more rational, and more advanced - superior - than other peoples, and so it'd be their God-given task to "illuminate" those "savages" through colonialism. Fascism is the elevation of those beliefs to a place of persecution and political revisionism in the newer stages of capitalism. So quite literally, to be a fascist, one has to first have this deep-rooted belief that there are people who are inherently superior to others. A belief system that Snape demonstrates early on in his life that he does have.

And that's exactly what I criticize about JK Rowling's writing and what further supports my point of Snape failing to atone for his beliefs: what she says in her books, basically, is that it's okay to think some people are superior to others as long as you don't do anything against those inferior ones like it's very much exemplified by what happens to the Malfoys after the war. It's where her individual background shows itself in the worst ways - because she was raised in a society that benefited from colonialism, their way of looking and thinking still carries a lot of reminiscent of colonialist thinking. Ask a person from the Global South about Europeans and you'll see what I mean - even when they don't realize, there is clearly a rooted racism in the ways they're raised because of that.

So it's obvious to me that Snape's development couldn't ever surpass the point where his core belief of superiority lies because Rowling doesn't see this as a problem. Maybe as an annoyance but certainly not as a problem when it is, 100%, the problem. Especially if we're talking about a redemption arc because then it means that Snape could never actually make proper amends or be actually accountable for what he has done as a Death Eater.

To break free from this way of thinking we need what Fanon calls cognitive dissonance: an extreme discomfort that is the only thing able to shatter a core belief like that of superiority. Now, we can argue that for Snape a cognitive dissonant experience would be Lily's death, or Voldemort's persecution of he,r because this did show Snape that his beliefs of Lily's exception to the rule were misplaced. However, there are various indications that that doesn't really happen for Snape, especially when we talk about his adult version's behavior and that might be explained by a series of earlier motives.

I'll focus first on the behavior pattern that I identify as cues on the fact that Snape didn't exactly atone for his mistakes in his adult life and then I'll come back to talk about why I don't think Lily's persecution or death was a cognitive dissonant experience for Snape, as traumatic as it may have been.

So I said earlier in the analysis that it doesn't matter why we do something, it only matters that we did do something because our actions are what will have a reflection in real life, not our intentions. And while I stand by that, I cannot in a sane mind say that our intentions do not play a role in our actions - that's simply not true. But our intentions have a different role to which importance should be attributed, and that is in the way we make things. Our intentions have as the main core, our beliefs, and our beliefs will therefore guide our actions.

Now, to simplify, if I believe every human being has the same value and should be treated as such, I'll act with the intention of demonstrating such belief. So I vote for candidates who preach equality, and I advocate for equality in the environments I'm inserted in (even if it's only me doing it subtly, it's still there). I cannot dissociate myself from it, it's a part of who I am and therefore it leaks into all aspects of my life. The same happens with the contrary: if I believe that some people are inherently superior to others because of their birth, then my core actions will reflect what I believe.

See where I'm going to?

Adult Snape perpetuates the cycle of abuse he grew up with, not only in his house but also in his political beliefs and later on as a professor. Yes, it was the abuse he suffered early on in his life that made a core belief of his that there are people who are superior because of their strength (and then it evolved to believe that this strength came from magic and purity) but as an adult who believes in this, it's painfully obvious how he perpetuates it: he defends bullies and is a bully himself.

He uses his place of power to punish and abuse this power simply because he can, he looks down on those he considers weak and acts against them in a show of his own superiority. And that isn't exclusively shown only to his students but also to people who are "below" him in the social hierarchy of the wizarding world, such as Remus.

And yes, I do realize there is more to their relationship as colleagues than just a non-werewolf "picking" on a werewolf out of prejudice but I have to note that if you really broke through your initial core belief of superiority, the very least you have to know is that there are some boundaries you can't break even out of well-placed resentment. And one of these boundaries is using your place in the hierarchy to oppress people who are below you, which Snape does when he reveals Remus' condition to the wizarding world.

Plus, I do want to challenge your statement of nobody being beyond salvation as I do see it as a very naive way of thinking, although that's not my exact point about it.

First of all, salvation and forgiveness are two different things. You can do unforgivable things and still become a better person than you were when you did those things, I do not deny that. But the damage you did is still there, and no victim of this damage is required to forgive you because you became a better person - sometimes our actions are irreversible, sometimes the damage we cause (especially when it comes to fascist beliefs) is too great, sometimes we can't possibly do enough to amend the things we've done. That counts with abuse, with fascism, with r*p*... there are many things to consider before we say so freely that no one is above salvation. It's naive to believe that everyone deserves forgiveness because there are things that cause too much harm to ever be amended again.

And as I said before, salvation and forgiveness are two different things. I do believe people can do better even after doing unforgivable things. I won't say it's exactly fair to the victims but there are abusive people who have become better after a especially bad relationship, there are parents who have become better parents to their youngest children than they were to their oldest, there were supremacists who became much better people with life, I do not deny that. I have no desire to deny that actually.

What I am advocating for, however, is that we hold these people, and characters, responsible for their own actions and uphold the very pillars that will give us the basis from which we should judge the changes in their behavior. And what I am saying about Snape is that he did not fulfill any of these milestones for redemption, it only appears so because he turns against Voldemort but that alone isn't indicative of change because the evidence shows that his core beliefs are still the same and as such, his actions on a personal and general level will reflect that even without Voldemort.

The point I'm making is that our core beliefs are the ones that guide our actions, and therefore, Snape's actions cannot be deemed as completely redeeming because they don't reflect an actual change of behavior more than they reflect a change of perceptions of the people he sided with in the beginning. Snape's actions don't reflect a cognitive dissonant change but on a shallower level, a change in perception: he doesn't turn on Voldemort because he realizes that his supremacist beliefs are frayed but because he takes Voldemort's persecution of Lily with hatred.

I explain: we only hate in three instances, one of them being when the object of our hate directly or indirectly threatens the things we love. As much as I deem Snape and Lily's friendship toxic, I cannot deny the existence of love, so when Lily is threatened by Voldemort, Snape hates him because he is a threat to her. Which is fair, but it's not a cognitive dissonant event for him because of all the points I make above. His change is superficial, his loyalties change out of emotions and not out of convictions, and as much as this doesn't matter when it comes to the actions he has taken - Snape did have a fundamental role in defeating Voldemort and (questionably) defeating the corruption within the system Rowling so much adores - it matters because it'll indirectly impact the actions he'll make around it, hence his role as professor, for example.

As much as I do respect what it has cost him to endure as a spy for Dumbledore, I cannot say that his actions towards Voldemort are enough for a redemption arc because there's no actual change in Snape. He is the same he always was, he just had a change of loyalties out of love, which is noble but at the same time, it still causes damage to the people around him exactly because he didn't change.

- Riddle. Stay calm.

Malfoy snatched his wrist, which was holding the wand, lowered his head and whispered to him. His golden, untuck hair and his warm breath tickled his neck, making him shiver and slacken his wand. He never got used to Malfoy’s unrealistic warmth.

Tom hurriedly hid the murderous look on his face and went back to his plate. Rosier was cursing at Muggleborns and bragging about her so-called pure bloodline. Tom didn’t quite enjoy pretending to be oblivious while being heaped on insults, but he knew Malfoy wouldn’t leave both him and Rosier alone if he went out of his mind and attacked Rosier right inside the Great Hall. Rosier wanted to provoke Tom, even more so as he stayed resigned, so she used whatever cruel words she could think of. And in the end, as she still hasn’t succeeded, she spat out a “Boring!” and put on a victorious smile, turning to Malfoy with her chin up:

- I didn’t know you took pleasure in hanging out with such filthy mudbloods.

- You do now. Shut your mouth with your breakfast before you are gifted a beautiful, beautiful Crucio.

Malfoy lazily rolled his eyes to Rosier, and his voice was just as insipid - small enough for the other houses to hear, loud enough for the ill-fated Slytherins sitting nearby to turn themselves into thin air. Fortunately, Rosier was smart enough to know that Malfoy was livid and didn't want to be messed with, so after laughing it off, she changed the subject. Tom didn’t know what kind of world they are living in, but he has seen Malfoy use Crucio and Imperio a few times. Not as proficient as his other spells, but thinking about what Malfoy had gone through to be able to use the Unforgivable Curses at the age of fifteen made him nauseous.

Malfoy politely placed the napkin on the table and got up to leave, not forgetting to whisper to Tom about his behavior among the snakes that were so painfully eager to stick their fangs in his throat. He stared blankly at Malfoy for a moment, then quickly finished his breakfast, following him and walking side by side with him back to their dorm room. He could never like others’ chilling cold.

Hello everyone! I'm back with Chapter 7, which might be a bit shorter than the previous ones because I decided to split what I had already written. This, of course, means that Chapter 8 will be coming soon :)

I really hope you'll enjoy it! Hermione and Draco might get a little closer, but of course, just a tiny bit; we're not rushing anywhere :D. Happy reading to everyone!

"Are you alright?" The question burst forth from the girl's lips, laced with genuine concern. Malfoy slowly turned back to her, his features etched with a mixture of suspicion and curiosity. With furrowed brows, he peered down at the girl sitting on the floor. "Why?" His response sounded almost like a growl.
