Mihawk Headcannons
Some of the headcannons I have about Mihawk that have recently been eating a whole through my brain like a very persistent worm.
These are all just my hopes and dreams based on no evidence whatsoever so yeah the resolute language is just for jokes. - When we see Mihawk at Roger's execution he is 19 and has to wear Yoru across his back because she is too tall for him. Meaning that there was a good at least 5 years where Mihawk prayed every day that he would continue to grow so he could wear Yoru down his back and live out his aesthetic.
-Also, Yoru probably weighed more than 19-year-old Mihawk, and that weight is not distributed evenly, especially with how Mihawk was wearing her across his back. And Mihawk even then was masterfully skilled of course, but say, every now and again he'd be distracted, maybe by a certain redhead whose to sayđ¤ˇđżââď¸, and forget to counterbalance losing him his ever-present fight with gravity. All this to say was that in the right circumstances, young Mihawk was very tippable and had to quickly become acquainted with the expert skill of picking yourself up while on the sand, with a sword bigger than you are strapped across his back.
- I don't really care how but it is imperative to me that Mihawk knew Rayleigh, Garp, Benn and Yasopp as a teenager/very young adult and they used to clown him relentlessly. Garp and Ray are too damn old to be scared of a teenage Mihawk, Yasopp has no self-preservation and Benn has always recognized Mihawk as the awkward, sarcastic mess he is and has had to scold him just as much as his Captain. It's why they are the two rhp he's most familiar with and Benn is his favorite (captain included) - He is Spanish. I know a lot of people headcanon Romanian because of the whole Dracula lives in a dark castle thing but I will stand by he looks like a Spanish Conquistador till my dying day. And obviously, because people don't have to be from just one place he can deffs be both! But yeah I think he's Spanish and should speak/understand Spanish solely because Doffy is also Spanish (can't believe people thought he was German his name is literally Donquioxte) and regularly tries to rizz people up at the Warlord mewting (namely Crocodile) in Spanish and Mihawk (the only other Spanish speaker) has to bare the burden of comprehension of the truly fluid and vile nonsense Doffy is spewing. And Doffy who of course also clocks this is trying to go for a record of what nobody is quiet sure, but whatever it is Mihawk will be damned before he loses at anything to that damn bird
- This one gonna be very brief because the rest of this has been pretty lighthearted and I don't want to harsh the vibes too much. But Mihawk definitely has scars on his back like not just one but properly multiple. And given the fact that he was supposedly betrayed, his mistrust and loner attitude, and the fact that his eyes are very rare and probably special all signs point to; he was definitely at one point hunted as a child till he turned hunter.
I think meeting Zoro, someone that is not only just as dedicated to the blade but also just genuinely loves fighting as much as Mihawk does.
And I think seeing that same thrill reflected back at him really opened his eyes to the fact that Shanks didnât like fighting he just liked fighting him.
And I think that kind of forced him to recontextualize how he thought about their whole relationship and I think thatâs a little part of why he decides to end their decade long break.
Heâs not gonna fight him cause Mihawkâs a man of principle but he can stay for a drink.
What Iâve learnt while researching Mihawk for my color theory essay is that apparently Toei has very strong opinions about Mihawkâs color scheme and like a sugar daddy with very specific tastes they love to put him in gold.

Toei when Oda tries to suggest a color for Mihawk that isnât gold
Was thinking about this lovely comment that @manofbeskar left me "(+ blackbeard thing, me and my dad were saying if bb hurts/kills shanks, there's a chance mihawk will go after him)"
And not to put on my theory glasses
but it unknowingly triggered my biggest fear that I didn't even know I had. What if blackbeard killing Shanks and Mihawk hearing about it is what triggers the flashback into his backstory. What if that happens and it actually kills me? What then?
What fresh devil's deal is this?
Because like I got what I wanted Mihawk deep dive yay! But at what cost? Aren't some prices simply too high?
And I think we can all tell that we are gearing up for a Red Hair pirated Blackbeard Pirates confrontation (also isn't it neat that all three men involved in this whitebeard, blackboard, red hair, are all memorialized by their haircolor? Pretty fucking neat) But we also know that Shanks isn't going to beat blackboard Luffy, the protagonist has to do that! So it's reasonable to think that either the red hair pirates are shattered like what happened with Law and Shanks is gravely injured or Shanks dies and the red hair pirates have to regroup and probably partner up with the strawhats or something. but yeah if Shanks' death triggers Mihawk's backstory I think I'd be legally obligated to fly to Japan and attempt to fistfight Oda.
The Seraphim & The Concept of Self

I wonder who picked the Seraphim's outfits cause at first glance when you only look at S-Hawk and S-Snake it feels like there's a standard uniform. then you see the whole group and there's definitely some individuality going on; like S-Bear just wearing a mini kuma outfit, S-Shark with the gi, my man Moria got a little suspender situation going on over there. S-mingo wearing a whole ass hawain shirt. So there's definitely some variety though they all incorporate white in some way. And I wonder if maybe they got some input into what they wore one of the only acts of "free will" they were allowed was choosing whether they wore shorts or long pants which is as adorable as it is sad.
Because think about the implications that they are dressed to the taste of their adult counterparts, right down to how doffy and mihawk like to open their shirts (except for S-Snake which thank god) but yeah what if it wasn't an allowance of free will but a test to see just how deep DNA ran. If it could influence something as simple as choice of clothing, just another fact for Vega punk to marvel at.
Or maybe the clothes were chosen by one of the Vega punks (I can imagine Shaka doing it) or one of the other various lab assistants. And it's just another way to get them to embody the warlords, to reinforce who they were cloned to be, impressing on them that they are not their own people, their lives are not their own. They are already predetermined; from what powers they get, to what weapons they use, even down to what clothes they wear. Everything reinforces that they are not people, just "better" "stronger" versions of someone else.
Either way, and It might have not have been purposely meant that way because I'm pretty sure Vega punk doesn't really register them as human (which is weird cause he treats stussy very humanly and a whole other can of worms seeing as they seem to be aware and possess a personality to some capacity) it's another way of dehumanizing them, reducing them to the people they are meant to become. They have no "free will" no illusion of choice; they have a predetermined destiny, a pre-determined order, there was never any room for choice even down to the shirts on their back.
I think Mihawk should break his arm, have to wear it in a sling the whole shebang, it's just completely useless for a little while, meaning( because I'm pretty sure Yoru is a two hand sword) he can't use Yoru at full potential.
I think it'd give him a lot to think about, once he made it past all the anger that is.
preferably his right arm because while I'd bet he's ambidextrous to some insane self taught degree I'm pretty sure he's right hand dominant
Also I don't now how he'd break it but preferably something involving doing something for/protecting he kids. (could be silly could be serious) maybe they made him climb a coconut tree who knows, not me đ¤ˇđżââď¸
But I think he'd come out of the whole ordeal wih a little more respect for Shanks and just how hard it is to live without your dominant hand, A realization that he kind of made the whole shanks lost an arm thing about him and while Shanks' loves Mihawk's vanity that was a little too childish even for him.
And finally i think he's be angry cause how could Shanks give this up? He can't use Yoru with the extreme ease he usually can and even just this is threatening to swallow him whole, how could Shanks' so recklessly, willingly, throw away his forever?
But he looks over at where a pair of cotton candy haired idiots are arguing over nothing; whole, relatively healthy and maybe not very happy but alive and he thinks about how he had a little something to do with that.
And Maybe he's starting to get it.
look Skypeia is not even close to my favorite arc I honestly felt like it went on for just a little too long. But I can't deny it when Luffy rang that bell and Mont Blanc Cricket looked up in the sky and saw Luffy hitting this pose.

And just allowed himself to finally fully believe int he story he always hoped was true. Because The golden city didnt sink to the bottom of the sea it shot to the top of the sky.
I think about that everyday.
Watching Dressrosa and seeing Zoro watch Luffy's colosseum battle on the screen I was suddenly hit by the fact that in a Modern AU he'd probably be the most obnoxious kind of soccer fan.
You know the one that probably picks a new favorite team every match and is only a soccer fan when they are actively watching soccer. I can honestly just imagine him screaming at the screen and being all dramatic at the team talking about honor and shit. No actual practical knowledge of soccer though.
I just think he and Mihawk would just be the kind of people that like sport in a Modern AU they are athletes themselves but they also just like competition and adrenaline and so sports. Except Mihawk atleast attempts to possess a basic knowledge of the rules and plays of sports he watches while Zoro will watch a sport he's never heard of in his life, chooses a random dude that's "got guts" and root for them so wholeheartedly you'd think he's supported them all his life.
All this to say that goth family watches the World Cup as part of "family bonding time" and
-Mihawk is rooting for 3 separate countries, the 2 that his data says are statically most probably going to win and his home country cause he has some "patriotic pride". He watches intensely but never actually reacts to anything.
-Zoro is rooting for whichever team is playing against whatever team Mihawk is repping at the moment. He has no stakes in this longterm whatsoever exceot that he gets his fill of trolling Mihawk, sports adrenaline and on the rare occasion his team wins he gets to be a smug asshole to the man who raised him đ. He screams at the T.V so much you'd think he had money on the line.
-Perona liked the idea of styling cute matching jerseys so much so that she forgot how much she hates watching sport. She is very bored and unhappy and hopes that somehow both of them lose. She judges the outfits (the jerseys) of different countries and their coaches on a scale that only she really understands but all must suffer through.
-Shanks is there because this is the only time Mihawk will hold his hand even though he is squeezing so hard his bones might be ground to dust. (the only indicator that Mihaw is affected at all by what is happening). He's bar hopper he's used to seeing random sports he doesn't understand played on green fields running in the background of his mild buzz to drunken fool binge. He's just glad to be included.
I don't know there's a lot of alcoholics in One Piece as to be expected pirates and all.
But something about Shanks and Rayleigh's drinking feels a little more like drinking to forget than your more run of the mill pirate alcoholism. It just feels like Something that the people that love them maybe worry about a little too much for it to be fun.

đźđ¸PlayList đ¸đś
Thank you everyone that gave me Mishanks song recs!
They were so great and I got a lot of new music (which was the real goal) but yes Thank you so much for sharing! đđ¸
I got very inspired and thought I'd share some of the songs that really started to feel very Mishanks to me.
Change âI donât care that youâre a stonerâ to serial killer and this is definetly Shanks about Mihawk vibes .
I donât know very Mihawk about the whole situation and their falling out. Heâll never say it out loud tho.
Yes Hozier because again nobody does Longing and reminisce quiet as well. Mishanks âYoung and Wantedâ vibes. If there was ever a time it was just a time it was just the two of them wrecking havoc on the seas this would be the soundtrack.
Mihawk. I donât even have to explain once you listen youâll just know
Honestly. This is mostly because this would be a great sex scene song. I donât even like sex scenes in shows but Iâm suprised this song has never been used and this just proves thatâs because they lack taste. Also slightly toxic devotion very them.
Very Mishanks break up vibes.
Again I donât even need to explain how this is Mihawk.
Honestly thins feels very much like a companion piece to Too Sweet. Except this is more from Shanks POV. Itâs just the same vibes
I donât know why but itâs giving Mihawk
And
Again Shanks and Hozier both being obsessed with their babies.
Honorable mentions cause I hit the Audio limit đ
Mamaâs boy by Dominic Fike
Not to steal from satsuga which is where I first heard it. But again love to dig into Shanksâ parental abandonment trauma and this is a good song for that. Also his fear of Mihawkâs growing bored of him.
Wasted Summer by juju
Again not to steal from satsuga. But very young and wanted.
Nobodyâs Soldier by Hozier
Thank you hozier for releasing this just in time to make this list. Very early Mihawk. Young and Ungovernable.
BONUS
some goth family ones.
Second Child restless child by the Oh hellos
Is very Zoro in the goth family AU. Very second child technically youngest but with strong middle child energy.
Seventeen by Sharon Van Etten
Very Mihawk looking at these children who still have dreams and feeling like an old man.
Seventeen Going Under by Sam Fender
I donât know what to say You just need to listen to how Zoro this is.
I wish I had something for Perona but I think I just donât listen to any music sheâd be into đ. The closest I can come up with is Ribs by Lorde
I didnât mean for this to get this long đ. But yeah was very inspired by all yâall lovely lists and recs. Was very fun to go through! Let me know if you give any of these a listen and what you think!
I donât know something about Law trying very hard to be perceived as cold, distant and uncaring while very literally wearing his love on his sleeves.
Makes you thinkâŚ.
You do get the sense that the fallout of Roger's death and the Roger pirates disbanding not so much traumatized Buggy and Shanks indifferent ways but instead generated such drastically different reactions to the trauma.
While the trauma of everything seemed to push Shanks into the future, always constantly waiting for something, putting plans on hold and then later in place, for this great moment, this great coming that he sees on the Horizon. For Buggy it rooted him firmly in the past keeping him trapped in this grief masquerading as anger.
While Roger's death forced Shanks to grow up fast, it kind of arrested Buggy's development keeping him stuck in those same feelings, rooted int that same place.
You get the sense that Buggy's whole east blue schtick is just one long overdue rebellious phase one big fuck you to Roger and his ideals. He's rebelling against Roger's principles. One of their rules was don't steal from innocent people and Buggy was keeping a whole town in poverty. If Roger and Luffy's pirating styles are diametrically opposed to someone like Blackbeard, who might be the most literal pirate in the entire series, then buggy is the parody of that Blackbeard piratism. He is playing up cruelty, being the most piratey pirate possible, hell he's literally a clown on a stage. It's all a show! It's his own special way of trying to "get back at Roger" of trying to discard everything Roger taught him for this overacted, over exaggerated clownish cruelty. Mentally he never left that execution square. He is still 15, alone and scared.
Hell he literally never left either, while I'm pretty sure Shanks' booked it out of the east blue as fast as he could, Buggy never lef, might have never left, if not for Luffy. It's part of why Luffy bothers him so much, he's just like Roger everything that Buggy is trying hard to forget and here comes this kid, whose never even met the Captain but is wearing his hat, shoving it right back in his face.
It makes sense that he never leaves the east blue till Luffy literally forces him out of it (fucking with Luffy gets him captured and imprisoned) and it makes sense that it's Luffy that literally breaks him out of prison, literally sets him free, and on the path to greatness that maybe he was always meant to achieve (even if he trips his way into it). This boy that is tragically so much like his old captain but so beautifully unabashedly himself, is what Buggy needs to start letting go off the past, to start trying to move forward.
Maybe that's why Buggy, at what could arguably be described as his lowest moment, gets the strength to free himself from his own self imprisonment, realizing that even back then he was locking himself away and pinning his own dreams on Shanks. And, maybe for the first time ever, Buggy really own his dream. He declares to his tormentors and his crew and the entire world that; actually He wants to find the one piece, him, as captain of his own crew, this crew, not just a part of someone else's. That's his dream and he's willing to turn the world upside down to do it.
The fact that doffy at the very grown age of 41 is still making his people call him young master is soooo funny, especially given his immortality obsession.
41 isn't even particularly old or anything, but dude saw his hairline receding and couldn't take it anymore. And decided to make his mid-life crisis everyone else's problem.
His bathroom is probably filled with bottles on bottles of bombshell blonde hair dye. his blonde hair is all heâs got left.
he is refusing to die his twink death.
The sheer amount of people doffy and his gang had been turning into toys is crazy đ.
my guy a polar bear and a gorilla? really? why? đ what'd they even do to you?
fuck the hammer and the nail
if all Doffy has is a small child in a bear eared robe then every problem starts to look like it belongs in a playpen I guess
He needs to work on his conflict resolution skills
Zoro fights a lot with just 2 swords now instead of heading straight for the three sword style. Like I know he would uses only two swords previously for some things and he even had some 2 and 1 sword style moves but that was mainly just cutting obstacles. But now even in fights with some weight to them he uses 2 swords for the majority of it and then 3 sword style to finish them off (like with pica or lucci)
Which I never really noticed before but makes total sense now giving who he trained with for 2 years .
This is his evolution of Mihawk fighting lesser opponents with his knife. Heâs learning restraint. Because if Zoro was going to learn anything from Mihawk in the two years they spent together. It was going be how to stunt on fools.

Love how much Luffy just isn't here for people playing with their lives and self-sacrificing.
Like yeah fight with everything that you've got, but if you go in planning to die then you might as well not go in at all cause you've already lost.
Look I like Roger enough, I understand what he represents and I generally donât think he was a bad dude. I do however think he was shit at interpersonal relationships because, what the fuck. Whitebeards crew is infinitely more well adjusted and Iâd say he arguably had the more traumatic death.
Like what even, what kind of planning leads a 53 year old man to sire a child knowing he is dying of an incurable illness and is about to turn himself in to be excuted by the marines where he will cause so much chaos it is literally still turning the world on its head 22 years later. He knew he was going to cause so much of a stir that he literally disbanded his crew and told them to spread far and wide to keep them safe. Because he knew the marines would hunt them far and wide But yet he still brought a baby into the world. Babe. What the fuck? What even is that? What was the thought process. I sincerely hope it was an accident and not a deliberate attempt to bring about a new era.
Because if so babe I need to see the recipe or Iâm afraid we can never let you cook again
God Characters like Erwin Smith and Shanks and the way theyâve let their trauma run their lives. Erwin to the more obvious extent of course but;
Something about men imprisoned by the love they have for their dead fathers violently taken from them to young and too soon.
Cloaking yourself in the weight of his dreams wonât save you. The dream will end and there will still be a hole in your heart and bodies in your wake.
Itâs interesting how Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, Zou and Wano all spill into each other with actions in one arc directly leading to motivations and consequences in another. Like all three of those arcs are essentially set up for Wano when you look at the big picture. Theyâre all explaining how exactly it is that all these characters ended up her fighting these two menaces. And that makes sense given that Wano is kind of the biggest deal weâve ever gotten in terms of over arching storyline in One Piece and what is revealed there forever changes the story.
But yeah I just thought it was interesting because outside of Sagas like Water seven and weâve never really gotten that tipping over feeling before. But while water seven feels just like one big arc with individual pieces. All those arcs are distinct from each other and itâs only when you get to Wano and see the bigger picture can you really fit together just how we all ended up here. It also doesnât help that Wanoâs where theyâve been trying to go from the start.
Itâs also the first time they Straw hats actually have a plan to go out of their way and antagonize somebody. Like they are actively trying to antagonize Kaido before they got to Wano. Theyâve never done that before theyâve always just kind of tripped and fell into trouble trying to help a friend. Which is kind of how the kaido thing starts but it snowballs into much more than that. The closest to anything like it is Vivi and alabasta. It really helps post time skip feel distinct from pre time and really sets you up with out even knowing it to prepare for something big to go down. Itâs almost like a visceral shift from One piece as a serialized story to an a connected one.
