fat bodies tutorial!
ALRIGHT SO my pal @kalreyno wanted help with drawing fat characters and as a fat artist i felt like i could give a bit of helpful insight on that. there’s also been a lot of complaining about “boo hoo fat characters are hard to draw so i can’t include them in my work Ever” goin on lately so if that’s your case then this is for you too!! and also just for anyone who would like help with fat bodies in general, ofc. anyway, let’s get this show on the road!!
let’s start with some common misconceptions. these are the two main attempts at chubby bodies i run into, so i’ll focus on them.
the Anime Chubby i see everywhere, and it’s just……so wrong in many ways. first of all, there is almost no additional body fat compared to your average thin character - except for where it’s added in “attractive” places (breasts, hips, thighs). the breasts are way too perky, and don’t have the realistic shape fat would give them (though how to draw accurate breasts is another tutorial all on its own lmao). there is still a thigh gap, which usually only happens in very thin people, and bones are still visible on the surface of the skin, which also rarely happens in fat people.
the Michelin Man is better in some ways, but still not that great. it’s a slightly better attempt, but basically all that’s done there is taking a thin character and blowing them up, while giving no thought to fat distribution. the thigh gap is usually still present, and they look a lot more hard than soft - and fat is very soft and pliable.
here’s a chart on how fat usually distributes (if you can’t read my messy writing, “1. next to no fat, 2. moderate amount, 3. most of the fat distribution”). basically, the more muscle an area has, the more prone it is to develop fat, such as the abdomen, thighs, and upper arms. it’s important to note that fat sits on top of muscle, and that it does distribute in different levels, and not evenly across the body as shown in the Michelin Man.
now, here’s an accurate fat body with all of that kept in mind!! notice how the fat isn’t only kept to aesthetically pleasing areas, and how it sits realistically on the character’s body. their breasts sag a lot more, which happens even in thin people with larger breasts, and the nipples are pointing more downwards than straight out. there is no thigh gap in sight, there are no bones in sight, and most importantly, they have fat rolls, which are very important in drawing a convincing fat character!! as far as i know i’ve never met a single person with no rolls at all, and everyone has them, whether thin or fat - they’re just more prominent and more consistently present in fat people. pay close attention to where they are and how they’re shaped.
here are a couple of drawings showing how fat is affected when sitting vs stretching. as seen in the first, the fat specifically on the stomach is distributed a lot more evenly and stretched out, so it becomes “flatter”. the love handles are still pretty visible, though, as well as the fat on the thighs and arms. the breasts are raised with the shoulders, and the fat on the shoulders and near the neck forms rolls as it’s being pushed together.
in the second, there is a lot less room for distribution, so the fat is all pushed together. the breasts sag and the stomach forms rolls and spills into the lap. a good analogy for the way fat works is to liken it to a water balloon, and thinking of how its shape would change when resting flat on a surface, hanging off of a ledge, held upright, etc.
here are a few extra tips i find a lot of people miss!
first on the top is the hip/pubic region. the first circle is showing the way the bellybutton is folded in fat people, as opposed to stretched out in thinner people. the second is the stomach fat spilling over onto the pubic region and creating a separation in the two areas, which is something that’s missing in a lot of art. in addition, the pubic mound also gains fat, making it round as seen in the profile drawing i did up there (i’ve heard people refer to it as fupa?). the last in the hip region is the lack of a thigh gap. i can’t stress this enough!!!! if you’re trying to draw a convincing fat character, make sure their thighs are pretty much always touching!! for reference, mine literally don’t separate until my feet are about 2ft from each other.
the bottom right is showing the double chin, which a lot of people are afraid to draw!! fat does distribute itself here too, and there’s nothing wrong with it, so don’t feel like you shouldn’t give fat characters a double chin in your work for fear of it looking like a caricature.
in the bottom middle, it’s showing how fat affects different types of breasts with the presence of more or less breast tissue.
lastly, at the very right are stretch marks with their usual locations and directions, which i also can’t stress enough!!!!! i sometimes forget to add them honestly, but they’re so important in accurately portraying fat characters, as they literally come from the skin being stretched from fat being gained (and they’re also just rlly neat lookin like why wouldn’t you lmao). some people have less and some people have more, feel free to experiment with them!
the last thing is body types!! there isn’t one single way for a person to be fat, so feel free to experiment with shapes once you’ve learned the basics!!
so there you have it, a tutorial on how to draw chubs!! now go forth and make some accurate fanart or some rad fat characters, because the world could always use more of both. hmu if you have any questions or concerns, and thanks for reading!!
EDIT: someone pointed out the bad wording in the tutorial. thank you for bringing it to my attention and sorry for offending anybody. i’ve updated the tut, so please reblog this one!

Getting a bit sick of all the "ooh I'm so glad Laios has a soft body!" "Laios is built like an average guy" style posts. Because he doesn't and isn't.
Laios is built like a fucking professional wrestler. He isn't like, super chiseled or anything but he does not have an "average" body, he his built like someone who does a LOT of physical effort and training.
some dunmeshi height/age stuff from the adventurer's bible
Compiled some basic information I know about drawing fat characters for beginners since I've been seeing more talk about absence of really basic traits in a lot of art lately.

flat chested girlies are not nearly as represented as they should be in character design, but i think a very underrated body type to use in character design is girl whose chest is flatter than her tummy

So i thought about this, because I usually only draw very stylized stick figures these days, because I draw them for making dress sketches, but then I thought maybe I should try this in a different body size and see how hard it is. I only draw on paper, so my sketch is a mess, but it wasn’t hard at all to get the basic concept of a different body type. Getting a result like @mayakern obviously takes years of practice, but the base of: try out different body type was super easy and fun.
And if I ever make a dress for someone with a different body type it’s gonna be super helpful.
And this was about 1 minute per sketch on computer, which I never draw on. So professional artists who only use one body type she is absolulty right: you need more practice.

As a fat punk, I can confirm that I NEVER consider if my clothes are "flattering" when I buy em or put em on. Doesn't even cross my mind. I don't know what that word "flattering' MEANS anymore and I'm SO glad I don't.
Don't dress to be thin and don't dress to fit an invisible "beauty" standard. I dress every morning with the intention of looking like a supervillain and absolutely nothing else. Who's with me?!
but like it's so punk for fat people to wear clothes that are deemed "unflattering" for fat people. In fact the next wave of punk fashion should be all people emphasizing their fat. Cut outs where the fat folds. Seams, belts, cuts, and patterns that hilight the fat instead of hide the fat of people of all sizes. Radical acceptance of fatness
Can we take a moment to address the fact that fat people aren't allowed to have a type or taste unless it's other fat people?
If a person with an "acceptable" body type (thin, midsized or muscular) is typically most attracted to another one of these "acceptable" varieties of body that isn't their own... for example a thin person having a type for muscular people... it's normal.
It's just a preference, right?
If anyone with one of those "acceptable" body types listed above is attracted to fat people, it can either be seen as odd or cute. Toxic attitudes towards it range from:
"Aw, I love that you look for personality!" to "Seriously? Look at you! You could do so much better, don't settle for less!" to "Good for you, giving them a chance anyway!"
Even if some of that sounds positive, it's all horribly fatphobic. Not healthy. Not equal. Yet, for the most part, being attracted to fat people when you aren't fat yourself isn't seen as a huge issue or really discussed at all. People might just tell you that you're selling yourself short or have bad taste.
BUT.
If you're fat, all those rules change.
Into muscular builds? Skinny bodies? Midsized frames?
"That's not fair, how do you expect him to stay in shape and be sexy for you when you don't even try to take care of yourself? You would swallow him. He deserves someone who keeps themselves as trim as he is. You should be with someone more your size."
Just because I'm fat, that doesn't mean I suddenly lose all capacity for taste as to what I'd prefer my partner to look like. I'm not less worthy of having a partner I'm attracted to. I don't deserve less say or lose rights to my opinions because of my body type.
I'm attracted to skinny men. That's my type.
That doesn't mean I wouldn't go out with a fat guy or a muscular guy or a midsized guy. Doesn't mean I think fat guys are ugly or muscular men are gross. I'm generally not particularly inclined to other builds rather than thin ones, but if he was sweet to me and checked all my boxes, I would totally go out with him! Without hesitation! Despite his body type.
No one is ugly for their appearance. "Ugly" is something inside you. I don't think that shallow. Fatphobes? They're who's truly ugly.
And racists, sexists, punkphobes, etc.
But still... generally... I have a preference.
It was okay for you.
Why not for me?
Ok but like. I know that everyone love making jokes about how "the first step for passing as a trans person is being skinny and white", but in reality... Both of these can actually kinda be disadvantages when it comes to that?
Like, skinny white male and female bodies are the bodies that society knows how to categorize best. They're the ones that the collective gaze is focused on. They're the ones we're shown in anatomy textbooks. So if you generally don't fit the criteria for a body that people know how to categorize in other ways, people will be more likely to assume your gender based on how you dress, talk, move, etc.
Like, I don't mean it as a "being skinny and white makes life harder for you actually" kinda thing. Objectively speaking, it clearly does the opposite. But I also think that, again, objectively speaking, trying to claim this is how that power dynamic behaves in this specific context, just ignores other factors at play.

We need to bring back the athletics body type post
sometimes i sit and think about myself
and by no means do i think i’m “plus” or exactly “big” but i am over 200lbs (~91kg).
maybe i don’t look it, i guess i haven’t changed in looks much.
but i’m not “skinny,” “thin,” or “small” either.
i’m probably pretty “average,” and “medium” but i’ve always felt ‘too big’ for that. now that’s a problem in and of itself (the fatphobia and thinspo is very present in media and life still) but that’s not this post.
but idk i know others are in the same boat of ‘too big, but too little’. and again im probably a medium-large sized person (also including being nearly 6 foot) but its weird how little “community” there is for people my size. (that’s not saying thin or big people should have less or no community; we should have equal community bc it’s not that serious tbh 😭)
but idk it’s weird to me bc as someone who doesn’t exactly look my weight, it’s an odd spot to be in.
anyways yeah this is a ramble post i’ve got nothing just wanted to chat about my experience n thoughts lol
Women of Cinema
So I'm a little peeved with my dad because he always has to compare things to his generation (his is apparently better in all the ways). Usually, I just ignore him, but last night we watched Justice League together and he was complaining about the female roles in the trailers and movies. He doesn't like that the new Lara Croft doesn't have big boobs or wear skin tight clothes. My response was that she's an adventurer, why would she care what she's wearing? Then the movie started and he didn't like that they picked Gal Gadot for Wonder Woman because, again, she doesn't have big boobs. He would have picked Megan Fox (he loves Megan Fox). I looked at him and my argument was Megan is too thin and Gal looks strong. But that didn't stop him from ranting. So it makes me mad that my own father believes that the media should be showcasing this sensually enhanced women rather than body positivity and individuality. He doesn't care about the inspiration these women bring to young girls growing up, he just wants something he can admire. Am I being rational as a woman or am I irrational in our society?
