Commentary on aroace/lesbian “fujoshi”

I would like to start this off by saying I am an aroace lesbian. What does that mean? Simply - I don’t want sex, nor romance, but if I did, I know where I’d find it. I love WOMEN. All women. Any women. I also really like yaoi, and I’ve seen some minimal discussion about specifically women who love yaoi or BL, and I’d like to add my two cents.
Several people online seem to take “lesbians liking yaoi” as just a natural reaction to the overall market of fiction. That is to say, there’s not a lot of options. There is a side to yuri which appeals to women, yes. But the way I see it, it’s either magical girl or slice of life, or, written by a man. And most of the stuff written by men is porn - bad porn. Thus it doesn’t appeal to women who actually like women.
In the same vein there is hetero stuff, which some lesbian/aroace yaoi enjoyers say doesn’t appeal to them because the majority of it has a male/female dynamic that is skewed. Oftentimes the woman is portrayed as weak or perhaps just isn’t a correct representation of the lesbian/aroace consumer. So why even bother?
Anecdotal, but I have had this experience too. I have a hard time getting into any kind of hetero ship because the women are often unrelatable or worse - just uninteresting. I don’t like men, so why would I care if it was just some faceless dame and her super hot husband? I don’t give a shit about him.
I’ve found that I enjoy a lot of hetero ships from demon slayer. Some may find this contradictory because there has been some commentary on the usefulness or intrigue around women in demon slayer. I think the demon slayer women are very interesting, story wise and appearance wise, and they fit very well with the men I ship them with. That is to say - men in demon slayer are simps for beautiful, strong, independent women - and I eat that shit up.
Most hetero stuff, however, is victimizing the women. Knowingly or unknowingly. It’s sad that if I want to get my rocks off to Mitsuri x Obanai, I have to scroll through like eight pages of the same inflation, big tits big ass no tummy, fart porn all sourced from the deepest dredges of Apocrypha. In fact, most of the time if you have the balls to like a fictional woman enough to want to see her getting respectfully banged, the cisgender heterosexual gooner men have already beaten you to the punch - and now you see her with her face in a smelly man’s ass. (All real examples by the way)
So it’s not to say I don’t like yuri, or hetero, it’s just that if I want to see women getting railed - I’m very particular. As I should be.
Yaoi, some people on the internet say, sets the men it’s focused around on equal footing. Instead of the woman being the damsel or a plain sexual object, the uke and seme are usually just two dudes. Not to say there aren’t power dynamics in yaoi - just to say that those power dynamics don’t hurt my pride as a woman. It doesn’t victimize a girl for somebody else’s sick kicks.
Yaoi, at least the kind I read, also can have an element of one man (the uke) usually being pretty soft or feminine. Why? Well that’s a pure reflection of how I (and other people) view sex. There is the giver and the receiver, the top and the bottom, the dom and the sub. Not that those lines don’t get crossed - they do, all the time. But as good ol’ Tevye says about Anatevka… TRADITION! (Sorry. It’s 3 AM)
The way I see it, it’s a way of having that traditional dynamic (pretty soft bottom and strong handsome top) without victimizing a woman. I do the same with yuri ships - I absolutely love love love a stone top with a pillow princess. And also - and I say this with no sense of shame - femboys are cute. Women are the superior form. Soz. So it’s awesome to see a man invoking his feminine side. It’s not like it makes him any less of a man. No matter how many times my mom peers at my drawings of Cloud Strife and says, “She’s pretty.” It doesn’t change the fact that he is him.
Gender is a fickle thing. It comes and it goes. I used to have a very conservative view of gender, and even sexuality. I was a “gold star lesbian”, and wanted nothing to do with men (still do, irl). You know what changed me? You’re gonna laugh. My Hero Academia. Oh, did I say you were gonna laugh? I meant cringe.
It’s not what you think. Bakudeku actually traumatized me - not the ship itself but one story I read on AO3 that I now understand for the masterpiece of terror and grossness it is. I would drop it but I don’t want to draw any undue attention to it.
What changed my mind on gender was actually Tomura. It didn’t even happen on purpose, l didn’t see him and go, “Oh he’s pretty, let’s dump a little more estrogen into him”. I shipped him with Dabi, paired them off as two dudes gettin it on, and I was loyal to my m/m ships. I ignored the ones tagged “Trans Tomura Shigaraki” because my brain refused to compute it. But then… I ran out of male fics. Well ran dry. I was getting anxious. I needed my shigadabi fix and how to get it?
Well. Can’t be that bad for Tomura to have a pussy.

And that’s how it happened.
Just like that, my worldview shifted. Proud to say I’m a lot more open to gender and sexuality, now. It’s sometimes hard to admit that I used to have such rigid views. It’s a bit embarrassing - but I was also 13. My Hero just gave me the push I needed to grow up.
I’ll wrap it up now.
If you’re a lesbian or if you’re aroace and you like reading yaoi - don’t feel bad. Don’t even question it. Fiction is fiction, we’re here for such a short time you might as well enjoy the things you consume, whatever that may be. It doesn’t make you any less of who you are. It might mean that you’re just a feminist. Or it might mean you have some issues with your gender you need to hash out. Or maybe it means you just like hot guys. Who cares?
Some people argue why lesbians and aroace people like yaoi so much. There are many different answers. I’m not really concerned with them, anymore, now that I’ve found my own. What does concern me is the amount of people who I assume are outside of fandom circles… never having heard of women (lesbian or not) enjoying yaoi or BL. Several reddit comments asked, “There are lesbians who like that stuff? I’ve never seen one.”
Lemme tell you, these people are missing something awesome in life. Yaoi written by women is like fucking crack.

~the train to the capital~
The car kept moving as I looked out into the crowd many reporters and photographers Callum was still crying I mean I couldn’t blame him we were like lambs being sent to slaughter. Crysta was trying to comfort Callum telling him all the greatest of the capitol and how amazing everything was going but he continued to sniffle. Crysta frowned and got out a tissue to whip away the little boys tears I felt horrible for him.it felt like these most recent games have been the most painful and violent maybe 6 or 7 games ago a girl had tracked down every single tributes and had slammed their hands to floor and gutted them it was obvious she would’ve won. As I looked in my small bag to see the gifts my grandma had gave me (authors note sorry chat I forgot to write that In I forgot to check my before I posted 😭😭) inside the bag was a small necklace with a locket with a dragon fly on it,a little bag of coffe cake she always made really good coffee cakes,some cookies that my uncle had made and finally a letter with a blue ribbon with a white lace trim tied around it.. I’ll read when I get on the train. Then the car pulled to a stop and we got out Crysta lead us into the train smiling and waving to the photographers once we had stepped into the train I took a glance around and it was one of the most futuristic things I’ve ever seen. “Now children these will your mentors this year!” Crysta announced “this is Holden” she pointed to a man who had a clean cut buzz one scar on his right cheek and another a rock the bridge of his nose and he nodded to us “now this is Visha!” She pointed to a lady with freckles, waving brown hair, and gold stud earrings “evening” the lady smiled and nodded “hi” I lol,Ed at both of them and Callum sniffled “h-hello”. Crysta nodded “aren’t they the sweetest now you can look around at your rooms or stay out here just be back for suppers at 8!” She said cheerfully.
I heard over to my and it was one of the most luxurious rooms I’ve ever been in it had a huge bed,a dark wood dresser,and when I walked into the bathroom it looked like it was pure marble,the shower looked richer then me and it couldn’t even make any money..I took my little bag of gifts and set them on the dresser and chose to look in the dresser draws. Their were almost everything color of dressing I could think of form mahogany to piggy pink. Apparently it was only gonna take us a day to get to the capital which made me a bit upset I have the access to basically every color of clothing and I can only wear one?think about how it will only take a day what if the caption takes my gifts? Well that seemed cryptic I;m guessing the coffee cake is supposed to symbolize now judging a person by their cover when I was 6 before I tried my grandma coffee cake I thought it would bad because I didn’t like coffee I didn’t want to try till one day I did and I loved it..the cookies probably mean a bond between family but now I wonder what does the letter or the dragonfly locket mean..? It tugged at my brain for the rest of ride and before I knew it supper once I came out of my I sat down across form Callum Crysta next to me,visha was next to Callum and Holden sat at the head of the table. When I looked at the food it looked absolutely delicious it was almost like gold sparkled off of the food as we ate reaping of past districts, played on the tv. As I watched the prettiest girl I have ever seen volunteered for district one dark brown hair,brown eyes,beautiful red lips a stunning voice… apparently her name is Penelope. I snapped my eyes away form the tv trying to evade suspicion going to continue eating Crysta poured me some strawberry soda and we all talked about mostly  miscellaneous things till Visha spoke up “now remember you need to shock the capital now something worth hatred But something to shock them in order for them to love you for sponsors” we all looked at her and she sipped on her sparkling water and Holden nodded in agreement. After supper was finished I had checked up on Callum he was doing better then he was before I headed to too and for someone reason I was stil hungry so I ate my coffee cake and cookie. I opened the dresser draws again and picked out a soft peach night gown with a white trim and went to fresher up. Their was 50 types of soap scents to chose form I was almost overwhelmed with how many choices I could make..I chose a rose scented one because you can never go wrong with flowers I think this is my first hot shower even I’m used to cold baths but this is nice I wish I could stay on this train long enough to get used to it.as I scrub my body and was thinking aground what my hair type could be in order to pick the right shampoo I wondered how my family was holding up was my mom okay? What about my dad? What about my brothers? I tried to push it away but it keep coming back my mom loves roses my dad would fake ones out of hay for her because they were are in 10. As I picked a rose scented shampoo i tried not to think of how much of a tragedy really was for the frist 2 districts, it was like a bunch of kids fighting to go for the lowers it was fight not to go..one thing I didn’t notice was a small rack of what I think are perfumes? Maybe I should smell them later. After I dried myself off and put in my night gown I smelled the perfume and they all smelled amazing it likes the capitol is trying to buttered us up before we’re set off it like they goodbye meals we would give to are farm animals before they were sent to butchered. After I set all the perfumes back it was already 11 so I thought I should get some rest and I got into bed and fell asleep in about 20 minutes.
~the first look at the capital~
The next morning I woke up at around 8 and I picked out a rock blue dress it was similar to my reaping day dress but more fancy I guess I too another shower and continued with my rose theme. I tied my ribbon toe on my collar and went to eat breakfast. The pancakes sparkle silver I had stacked up w pancakes and poured powder sugar,maple syrup,and I polled. Acoupels berries on their too and started eating Callum came in a bit late still in his pajama he started eating.”uhm mr.?” Callum looked at Holden and he nodded “uh do you have any survival skills? so I can start planing ahead..?” Holden took a deep breath “okay kid listen you too” he pointed at me “ I don’t know what this is could be a desert wasteland,an arctic forest or a tropical Island but you gotta find water either way 2 or more days without water Is basically death” Callum seemed a bit shaken but nodded “don’t forgot either now unless you get High trying score I want you maybe find a small supply pack near the whatever direction you’re running and take off if nothings near you go turn around and run into that arena when it not fun that way were you lose sight wait till night to get left I eve supplies if he craters are camping their don’t go for it” he looked at Visha “make alliances don’t be rude it gives them a reason to kill you” she took a sip of her coffee “we can brainstorm but I’d for you guys not to be too stressed before we’re even at the Capital she looked at the hunger games rerun on the screen “oh looked that me right their she pointed and we looked he looked the same but way younger and less freckles she had blood all over her and she was suffocating someone and Crysta gasped “Visha! Don’t scare the poor boy!” Visha smirked and Holden rubbed his forehead as call,um tried not to pay any mind and ate his food seeming to be make sacred then when he frist came out. After breakfast I stayed to help clean up well Callum got ready once he came out we continued watching reruns of the games till they made it the rotten that’s when district 12 got a Victor smart winning move he had their I might have to pick up a thing or two form him but I shouldn’t copy something from last games the higher tributes probably already trained to prevent it…once the clock hit 3 we made are arrived at the capital for what I imagine the capital looks like it was 10 times more luxurious and golden than I ever thought it would be,cars lined the streets and maybe blood fashion choices did too,towers as high as the sky’s and streets that looked lined by gold> they stoped and pointed at us like they were picking out farm animals and Crysta whispered to us “smile and wave kids!” She said cheerfully we did some Callum waved and smiled showing off his missing tooth. I waved and smiled trying to seem excited to go into an arena to fight for my life.

~The remake center~
As the train pulled to a stop Crysta lead us out of the train and went to take us to the Remake center when Crysta frist said the “Remake center” it didn’t make sense but know it does. Before they took me and Callum in the dressing rooms Visha looked at us “now I would recommend letting them do whatever they see fit. It’s just easier than demanding stuff.” She smiled and Crysta took Callum in first since he was younger and Visha spoke again “your stylist have probably designed another cowboy outfit it’s a district 10 staple” “they had me looking like a sheep out their” Holden said quietly “ah yes the scary district 10 who wielded a mace was dress up as a cute little sheep” Visha laughed and I laughed a bit as well I mean if you were to look at Holden you wouldn’t think of him In a fluffy sheep costume. Crysta peered out “scarlet honey their ready for you” Crysta smiled and Di got up and walked in “now this is Auriana,Lunara,and Ciro!” Auriana had tan skin,dimples,big brown eyes and orange and red hair styled in braids,she had an orange dress with ruffles and red heels. Lunara had warm vanilla skin,dark purple hair,dark blue eyes,jews that were shaped like moon and stars pieces were all in her hair,she had a dark blue dress with sliver stars all over it and ruffles on her dress as well,dark blue mesh gloves with stars all over them as well,and dark blue heels.Ciro had golden blond hair,bright blue eyes, neutral tanish skin, a burgundy suit with black dress shirt and brown dress shoes,he had a black tie with a bunch of gold brids on it. “Hello deary dearest!” Lunara said smiling she had the typical high-pitched capitol accent “We’ll be your prep team this hunger games” Ciro said and grinned he also had the same kind of capitol accent. Once I had stepped in they gave me a thin robe and once I looked around it seem cold and colorless the only colors in room were the prep team themselves.
In only an hour almost all my body hair has been removed,my eye brows has been shaped into more normal shape I guess,they had me washed down with a coffee ground looking scrub that had smelt okay I guess,my nails became shaped they looked pretty for the most part, and they had washed my hair out and started drying it with what they called a hair dryer.”wow sweetheart you have a million freckles!’ Aurina smiled as she applied lotion on my face “oh uh thank you” I meekly said attempting to avoid eye contact and I fixed my robe. “We’re almost done you’ve been doing so well so far” Lunara complimented brushing my hair as Ciro made sure my eye brows were the perfect shape looking at his book. “2 years one of the girl we had was just awful! She tackled an older member of the prep team!” Aurina grimaced. Ciro scoffed “you’re not supposed to bring up past tributes” and Aurina “oh gosh I forgot!” She seemed a bit sacred when she realized her slip up but she tried to brush it off I wonder why she seemed so sacred. “Okay sweetheart we going to need to you disrobe real fast as we make sure we don’t need to do anymore work okay?” Lunara smlied and I gently nodded untying the robe the three circled me like a hawks.” I think we’ve done you well!” Lunara smiled “now you can meet your stylist!” Ciro smiled and they all nodded “well go get him, now!” Aurina said in a tone that seemed cheerful. They all hurried out of the room, and I put my robe back on.
In about 20 minutes time a short young man walked through the door he looked normal a I guess? He had a center mullet with red highlights,black cowboy hat and a black suit with red accents. “Evening miss I’ll be your designer this games I’m Tirian” he smiled and I smiled to be polite “I’m scarlet” he nodded “nice name now let’s get you lunch and your costume fitted y’all will shine Like diamonds out their!” He smiled and lead em to a nice sitting room where lunch was severed it was steaks,mashed potato’s,rice,orange juice,and chocolate cake and it all looked delicious I almost felt like this food was to good for me. The steak tasted amazing I usually have animal product but I don’t get the high prince cuts like steak. The orange juice was okay too sweet in my opinion..Soon after I was fired for my costume a white slice cow girl shirt with what looked like diamond fringe,light blue bell bottom jeans with little diamond gems to match the fringe,and a white cowboy hat with a sliver trim and in the center a bull sliver jewel outline,and white cowboy boots. Tirian used a hair waver to make my hair more wavy since he thought it would complement it better. “Tirian? What costume have you design which was your favorite?” I asked looking it the mirror ”I’m not to sure one year I did design a very excellent black out outfits but it was simple” he shrugged continuing to do my hair.
~The tribute parade~
I looked at my nails again I liked the design Tirian did white nails with Jewels on them to match the costume.I see Callum walk in he looked pretty similar to me a different style of jeans and spears on his boots. His stylish and prep team she’s really excited said it was their best work yet as we walked into the elevator Oliver’s prep team was raving about how amazing we would be. I looked in one of the elevator mirrors Tirian didn’t put to much make up on just some highlighter and lipgloss he didn’t wanna do too much make up because he my freckles would make me stand out I guess. Once we reached the bottom floor it how strange it like district 10 it was basically a stable we walked over too 4 power white horses and helped us onto the chariots and Holden spoke up “don’t let little Callum fall off now” he say jokingly and Visha laughed “smile,wave,maybe flirt a bit” she joked as well and Crysta gave her a playful hit “Visha!” Crysta giggled. Tirian and juniper which I just found out was the Callum’s stylist name made sure we were in the right standing positions and they gave the horses treats. The opening music started and the nerves set in what if I embarrass myself? What if I fell?oh my gosh what if a faint!? Once I looked over at the district one chariot I saw that really pretty girl again Penelope she was in what looked like a ball gown i’m surprised it wasn’t dragging on the floor and the boy tribute was wearing a ruffled suit. The crowd roared in excitement as the two tributes waved and smiled. District 2 followed soon after they’re were wearing black armor with gold accents once their chariots pulled out into the crowd they took off the helmets and tucked them into their arms and waved. The district 3 chariot went the follow the girl had sliver dress covered with gears and a cape with gears on it as well and the boy had a sliver suit with gears covered all over it as well and to tie it all together they had a gear headpiece on. District 4 followed behind the girl had a mermaid dress on with a pretty headpiece to match and the boy had on the color of his suit and a ruffled shirt and white pants to match his shirt aI couldn’t blame the crowd they were roaring seeing that beautiful desgin I started to feel more nervous what if they thought me and Callum outfit was to basic? Oh my gosh I’m not going to get any sponsors.. district 5 followed behind 4’s chariot the girl had a meshy dress with shining glowing purple Jewels maybe he boy had a similar suit jacket they both glowed a purple hue. Once I saw district 6’s outfit I felt bad apparently their was supposed to be a hot air balloon floating over the parade and the designers dressed them in the same design a dark purple and bright blue I saw juniper almost faint when she saw it and her prep team ran to get her water I mean I just it’s a form of transportation? The capitol seemed confused when they came out and the designers excused themselves and one of their victors rubbed their forehead disappointed. Then district 7 quickly followed behind the tributes looked really young the girl had on a dark green dress with leaf designs and the boy had a dark green dress tunic and they had ivy capes with leaves all over the and they also had leaf crowns the capital stared cheering again. Once I realized district 9 was next I almost fainted me and Callum were next what if they didn’t like us oh my goodness I’m doomed either nobody in district 10 rarely ever get sponsor gifts!I tried to settle my nerves watching the district 9 chariot pull ahead as I took deep breaths. The grim had a ruffly tan dress with brown cowboy boots and what looked like a wheat crown and the cow had a tan suitwith a wheat crown and brown cowboy boots as well. Once they pulled ahead we set off as well the capitol cheered “here’s district 10!” The announcer boomed I smiled and waved still nervous and Callum smiled waving all over the place looking around. I tried to think of something to do and whispered to Callum “when we reached the city circle tip you hat and bow” Callum nodded confusing to wave.
As Daisys and sunflowers were throw onto the streets as we were pulled along the loud music and the cheering could give anyone a head ache. Once we pulled into the city circle me and Callum tipped are hats and bowed and the capitol cheered again before diverting their attention to the district 11 tributes. Their both had apple berets and red apple colored capes the girl had a really pretty dress with apple prints and red heels and the boy had an apple colored suit and a white dress shirt. Their chariot pulled near ours and he had spun her around it was actually a really nice sight they seemed really happy even though in about a week we’d all be fighting for are lives. Then district 12 Chamorro came along they were wearing all black which is what they usually wear but I thought they Smokey eye they did on the girl was nice. The president comes out to start his speech and the camera pans on his then goes around to pan on the tributes faces I order to show them listing to the presidents speech. The national anthem plays as he finishes and the camera goes around to everyone’s chariot and then once they finish the circle they disappeared into the training center. Once are chariots pulled into the training center the doors shut immediately and are prep team rushes over. They showered us in praises as they helped us down and once I looked I noctied the girl form district one penople was looking at me she smiled when I caught her gaze I nervously smiled back trying not to have blush creep up onto my face before I snapped my attention to Crysta “you all did so good! And it was so clever the bow and the hat tip? Just perfect!” I smiled na do looked over at the tributes form 11 and the boy was helping the dress down they seemed like a couple I doubt that would’ve been an act their probably dating and those their luck to the reaping.
