I work in a pharmacy and in german the word for male cat also means hangover ( Ich habe einen Kater = i have a male cat or i got a hang over). Being too far from any city or town means that the car eventually ran out of gas, and both Scott and Grian had to travel by foot when Grian started to cough during their walk. Hopefully there would be a gas station or a small resting area nearby.
