Maybe small spoilers for Nerdy Prudes Must Die

I think the song ‘nerdy prudes must die’ has so many layers so I’m going to discuss it.

I think Max took his death much more personally than he let on. Even during the song he says “I could give to sh*ts that you buried and left me, defiled my body… you pushed me off the edge.” Listen I’m no English and psych major but the intense detail he puts into describing what happened to him shows that it stuck with him. He also lets on right before his death that he’s not just some jock monster, saying things like “this is the nicest thing any one’s ever done for me”. Then almost immediately after this supposed act of kindness he practically gets killed. And yes while it may have been an accident, they still covered it up, they chopped him up and hid him away like they were guilty, like they had something to hide.

Okay now let’s talk about THAT part of the song (you know the one). He tells Richie to repeat after him. He has him fully under his control. He’s listening, he has to. The first “will you pray for me” is taunting Richie. Taunting him of his inevitable death. But the second feels much more emotional, especially given Richie isn’t repeating him and he seems to have no problem with that. He sings “who will pray for me, when I’m gone” but like I previously stated he’s talking about himself this time. It must have hurt to die and then have nobody care. Nobody missed him. He may have been a ‘monster’ at high school but in reality, he was just a kid who had never really been shown actual kindness (i.e. “this is the nicest thing anyone ever done for me”). Then the “or is this the eternal dark without a dawn” (exceptional delivery btw, my god). Like, is this all he’ll be? Will he forever be fermented as the asshole jock who died at the old Waylon place? After he kills these nerdy prudes will he be satisfied? You get what I mean right? I feel after that he remembers the cause of his death, and he fills back up with rage, turning back to Richie and asking him one more time, now notably saying “who will pray for you”. But then gesturing back to himself as he says “when your body’s gone”, reminding Richie what he did to him. And I’ve heard some people say the “this is the consequence for what you’ve done” line is about Richie gaining popularity, not about ‘killing’ max, but I think that by this point max is enraged with Richie, with what he’s done to him, so he genuinely means, ‘this is the consequence you get for what you’ve done to me’. Which makes it even worse when Richie tries to come back saying “I am not a loser” (BEST line) because who does this kid think he is? This kid killed him, and now he’s trying to tell him how it is?
