Thought of Achilles beating the shit out of someone and letting Patroclus clean his knuckles
Before I got into Epic: the Musical, i read the Song of Achilles, and of course read all available fanfics on ao3 with half a good plot.
When i came to read the older fics however, I noticed how odd the characterisation of Odysseus seemed?
Before, he would be a friendly, smart but loving friend and boyfriend to penelope.
In the older versions however, he was portrayed as cunning and downright egoistic.
This confused me a lot, and I remember thinking; Wow, something must have happened to change peoples perception of that guy.
And two moths later, boom!
I discovered EPIC.
And in the end Thetis sat and listened to the man she hated so much and she heard him talk of her son so amazingly and beautifully
She finally learned everything about her son who he was how he was what he felt how he did and to honor him she carved on his tomb what felt most right she carved what made Achilles Achilles
She wrote Patroclus
just two beautiful boys who Hector has done nothing to

literally my mom and grandma...
"stop crying it's just a book" i'm gonna fucking kill you
Thetis said so.
odysseus: this is a great opportunity! who says u can't go to the war?
achilles:

A poet falls in love with a singer
Listen to me, 3200 years ago, Patroclus
Plucked figs, ripe and bleeding juice,
Just for the blond haired boy who
Laughed with him. They sat on beaches,
Drank in sunlight as if it was life
Itself. They spoke to each other like equals
And had private races simply for their
Own amusement. The water reflected
In its waves just how happy they were.
Listen still. Even longer ago, furious Zeus
Sent his golden lightning down to us,
Striking the pairs that roamed the earth
As one. He scattered them, each now
Only half of the soul they used to be,
Left to seek out their other half, knowing
Nothing of how they looked or behaved;
Only that their laugh was the most
Beautiful. You say my name and I want
To melt into you like beeswax, vibrant and bright
With natural joy. I want to give parts of myself to
You, until you feel as if you are one whole
Soul again. You don’t like my poetry
As much as I want you to, but the thing is,
I would love you even if you hated me.
If the universe collapsed in on itself right
Now, and our small world came to its
End, I would be content lying in bed with
you, our legs tangled beneath the sheets,
Our warm breath mingling in a quiet conversation
That only we will ever have. The world
Will get cold around everyone towards the
End. Our air deprived of oxygen and
Heat as the Sun is swallowed. Humanity
Will feel winter like never before, the
Winters we get with the changing climate
Will not rival the end of time and space.
What I’m trying to tell you is, if you’re ready,
I want to make you shiver like that.
With lines from “History Student Falls in Love With Astrophysics Student” by Keaton St. James
**I saw the mentioned poem this morning and I physically couldn’t stop myself from opening my notes app. I just started running. The pacing and format is just so gorgeous and I wanted to emulate the theme with my own words. I will DEFINITELY be reading some more of Keaton’s stuff in the future because oh my god.**
Hi!
My first time having a blog, so as an introduction, in this house we love -
Science - understanding how the world works, asking and answering questions
Books - fiction, mostly fantasy, adventure etc - I’m a maniac about them. Words are my love language. True crime, history, horror, trivia, current affairs - anything’s good to discuss!
Memes. I shouldn’t have to say this.
I’m a writer, and I am currently involved with Hindu mythology- including the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and all the lore we’ve grown up hearing. *My views are modern, and if you disagree with them - we can politely debate and grow our knowledge, or if you are incapable of that - just ignore and move on. Do not treat my stories as factual material to educate yourself on the scriptures. Any sort of discrimination is wrong and unacceptable. *also I develop random obsessions. Bear with me.

bitches be like “this is the best piece of literature i have ever read” and it’s either a book that took them six weeks to finish or a fanfic they read at 3 AM
Fun Fact - or not so much
Okay, so, in my new book, there's a couple who is based off of Patroclus and Achilles and y'all know that quote from Song of Achilles right?
“I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.”
My couple has various moments where "Patroclus" recognizes "Achilles" right away by the sound of him walking, or how he smells, or (when he's dying) by his touch as a reference.
I did that at random. I didn't plan it but still happened.
And now I'm crying.
genuine question:
i see a lot of people hate on song of achilles. the main complaints i see are that patroclus is too babygirl, achilles and patroclus are too soft, etc. etc. but the point of the book is that we get the point of view from an unreliable narrator?? like, of course achilles is seen as more soft and sunshiney, it’s 1) a hypothetical fiction book and 2) based off of a separate fictional poem. of course patroclus narrates himself as not a fighter, because he compares himself to achilles all the time.
it’s not meant to be a perfect love story romance: it’s a story of pride, ego, heartbreak, and yes, love too, but the center point is always that it’s patroclus’s story. and anyways, if we’re going to hate on greek mythology retellings, then why do i never hear about people hating on circe? is it just because song of achilles is explicitly queer? her story is also a dramatically skewed retelling.
i have a lot more thoughts on this, but i’m just confused??

Fun Fact from The Iliad: The phrase “to eat a man raw” is a very particular phrase reserved just for the gods, as only the divine are exempt from the culture-defining restrictions of human society (ie cannibalism, incest)
Fun Fact from TSOA: Achilles’ last words to Hector are “There are no bargains between lion and men. I will kill you and eat you raw.”
Fun Conclusion: Achilles sacrifices his humanity to avenge Patroclus :)))))))
Achilles to thetis: *casually leaning on the side of a rock* hey, so, um, just wondering, hypothetically, can you see me up on mount Pelion?
Thetis: I cannot
Achilles: cool, coolcoolcoolcool, great, thanks. Anyway, I’ll be going now. Bye
(Achilles absolutely sprinting back)
Achilles to Patroclus: hey man, so, my mum can’t see us up here, wanna bang?
“ I know exactly what shape she takes up in the universe. If anyone can recognize her, it’s me “
🤝
“I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.” completely and utterly obliterating my poor heart and soul, making me into an unhinged and deranged version of barely functioning being and shredding me to pieces. i wish to no longer feel anything.
Sorry, but the whole “Hector is wearing Achilles’ own armor, taken from my corpse. It looks, almost, as if Achilles is chasing himself.” part just has me thinking… Who is Achilles truly hunting down on that battlefield? The man who killed Patroclus, or the man who let Patroclus walk into his demise? Who is Achilles trying to punish? Who is he truly trying to kill? Hector or himself?
