Free Manual Wheelchair Reference Models

ID: A banner with grey 3D models of 5 kinds of manual wheelchairs in a line in front of the disability pride flag and text that reads "Manual Wheelchair References" /End ID
For disability pride month, I decided to release a pack of 3D manual wheelchair models.
The pack includes 5 wheelchairs:
2 Active urban-style chairs (one of which includes a smart drive)
1 off-road active chair
1 children's wheelchair
and 1 standard "hospital" wheelchair).
All the wheelchairs are based off either wheelchairs I or friends of mine have used
Downloadable here!
or on the Clip Studio Paint Asset Store (ID 2097442) (there's been an issue with the CSP version, but the models in the download folder can be imported into clip studio paint until I can fix it)
More info about the download contents below:
The first download link includes the original .Blend file with all 5 chairs, as well as individual .obj or .fbx files the chairs (All but 1 have an .obj file, as they're only meshes. The chair with the smart drive is rigged, which is why it has an .Fbx file instead so it will retain that information) as well as a "read me" file that explains in more depth what kind of disability/character/lifestyle each chair is made for (These are just what I had in mind when I designed them, they are usable by other characters who don't fit the suggestions for the most part!) I wanted to include the Read Me contents in the CSP Asset Store listing, but CS said it was too long lol.
Also, as the title says, these files are free to use! While it's not mandatory, I would appreciate credit if you use them (or even just a tag so I can see the cool art you make with them!!)
I actually made these ages ago, the original plan was to use them in a series of posts then release the pack, but I never got around to making the series and so they've just been sitting here. I took a day off from art fight attacks to clean them all up and get them ready to post. If you experience any issues, let me know and I'll try to fix it up.
I had a couple more that were supposed to be in the pack including a sports (basketball/Tennis) wheelchair and some different styles of wheelchair, but I think the files corrupted so once I fix (or remake) them, I'll probably make a second pack.
If you have any issues, please let me know!
people talk a lot about how annoying it is to have people unnecessarily open doors for you as a wheelchair user and that is absolutely a thing
but i’ve also had people pretend not to see me coming and just shut the door in my face. i’ve had to ram a door open with my feet to the point where my mum called the school and told them to remind classmates to give me a hand with double doors because she was so worried. abled people either do everything for you and infantilise you or ignore you and pretend you don’t exist and both are equally ableist.
Something that really sucks about being disabled is places say that they’re accessible but they aren’t.
I’ve been to places that claim to be accessible where
the ramp’s too steep
there are steps they didn’t mention because “it’s only two or three”
the doorways are too small
there aren’t any elevators to the top floor
the floor is too rough to easily push on
exhibits are displayed in ways that are impossible to see from a wheelchair
the doors don’t have a push button
tables/exhibits are put way too close together
the surrounding paths have no curbs
Without those things, it isn’t accessible. You can’t put a sloped piece of metal on your doorway and call that wheelchair friendly.
If I could talk to myself four years ago I’d say it’s okay. It’s okay that you’re disabled. It’s okay that you’re going to need mobility aids for the rest of your life. It’s okay that you can’t do things other people can. It’s okay to be angry. It’s okay to call out ableism. It’s okay that you’ll never be “acceptable” as a disabled person. It’s okay to be a cripple.
Accepting your disability takes time. It’s okay.
Shout out to the ten year old who just got diagnosed. Shout out to the housebound fourteen year old. Shout out to the eighteen year old who can’t go to the university they wanted. Shout out to the twenty two year old who can’t get a job. Shout out to the twenty six year old with a caretaker. Shout out to the thirty year old who can’t buy their own house.
Shout out to young disabled people. We exist.
You don’t have to be on the brink of collapse to use your mobility aids.
You don’t need to be limping to use your cane. You don’t need to be staggering to use your crutches. You don’t need to be falling over to use your rollater. You don’t need to be too weak to stand to use your wheelchair.
They’re there to help you and you are never too “strong” to be using something that helps you.
Health is a myth and you cannot convince me otherwise
It’s been said before and I’ll say it again: the amount of disabled rep in the media is pathetic
A lot of my seeing disabled people in the media used to be immediately followed with “yeah this is stereotypical but at least there’s a reminder that we exist”.
Fuck that. Disabled people are treated like shit in the media and you never see them (except amputees but they have fully functioning limbs that just look robotic rather than actual prosthetics). Just because they give us representation doesn’t mean we should be grateful for the overused tropes, the inaccuracy and the general ableism.
Be angry. We have the goddamn right.
Thank you, I didn't even think of this, very helpful
psa for cane, crutch, and wheelchair users getting top surgery:
you will not be able to exert much effort with your arms. self supporting with a cane or crutch or self propelling in your wheelchair is inadvisable.
make sure you have a support person to help you, or be prepared to be using your legs more if you are able.
first adventure in the new wheelchair:
boyedfriend and i walked/wheeled over to some fast food places for lunch now that i could tag along! i've been having an awful flare-up for the past three days that has left me unable to stand for even short periods without discomfort, so being able to get the wheelchair today was great!!
i was already pretty aware of just how inaccessible some of the sidewalk in my neighborhood is, but actually BEING in the wheelchair showed me even more (rolling up over ramp curbs is way scarier than i thought LOL)
also, a LOT of buildings around here could work on their level of accessibility. i struggled a lot with narrow doorways, automatic doors that didn't open fully, slopes and ramps that were too steep, counters that were too tall, etc. (i made sure to point these out to the boyfriend so that he was aware, too)
it wasn't my first time using a wheelchair (the local mall has complimentary wheelchairs that i use frequently), but it WAS my first time using a wheelchair that I OWN (!!!) so overall the experience was great!
i might talk about more experiences and adventures i have with the wheelchair in the future!
guess who got called a cripple by a teacher in front of the entire class today
meeeeee
gotta love America 🥲
Edit: I should clarify he meant it jokingly, not maliciously, but still

I'm not saying bullying is good, but if you see someone parked in the lines next to a handicap space please block them in lmao

A guide to designing wheelchair using characters!
I hope this helps anyone who's trying to design their oc using a wheelchair, it's not a complete guide but I tried my best! deffo do more research if you're writing them as a character
So I stumbled through the Barbie aisle at Walmart the other day…
…and y'all, I almost cried. Just look at these. LOOK AT THEM.

So many skin tones!

PLUS SIZED BODY TYPES!

NATURAL HAIR STYLES!!! MULTIPLE SHADES OF DARK SKIN!!!

A WOMAN AS A DOCTOR!!!!!
i understand why some ppl shy away from drawing scar’s character in his wheelchair, since he’s said he doesn’t mind and im sure people just don’t want to come across as offensive. however, as a physically disabled person the joy i get from seeing an artist represent disabled people’s bodies in their art is just !!!!!!! it’s so nice, and you have the creative liberty to come up with some amazing designs. all artists who draw scar in his wheelchair i am very in love with you
Social experiment: at some point in their lives every single able-bodied person should be put in a wheelchair, challenged to do the groceries and travel on a bus to do so (including sloped footpaths, busy places, and throw some looks in etc)
It'd make everyone so much more sympathetic to disability and to those who have to use chairs on the daily.
Sincerely,
I've been in a chair in public for 20 minutes and I've already had several inappropriate comments and many uncomfortable and sympathetic stares, people grabbing my handlebars...and a "fucking cripples" from a 13 (ish) year old when the bus driver asked him to move from the disabled seating..
yeah, shoutout to wheelchair users, y'all are awesome and underappreciated...but seriously everyone should have to try this at least once.
