tw: tic disorders and tourettes syndrome
ik this isn't my usual blog stuff but pls reblog if u see this. as someone with a tic disorder, i wna try and clear a few things up <33 (if ive made any mistakes, pls feel free to correct me)
if you only notice someone ticcing when tics are being discussed or someone else is ticcing, this DOES NOT MEAN THEYRE FAKING! discussing or seeing someone else tic is a common trigger.
if someone is ticcing e.g. banging their fist against their chest, don't try to restrain them because it can be very overwhelming and uncomfortable, best way i can think to describe it is like when someone is holding your nose and you can't breathe. if they're hurting themselves the best thing would be to get a pillow or something and put it in the way so they hit that instead.
a tic disorder and tourettes syndrome is not the same. im not an expert, but i believe the difference is that tourettes has quite strict guidelines that need to be met and a tic disorder is when it doesnt tick all the boxes. both can be disabling and long term or life long. there are also different types of tic disorders.
there is a difference between redirecting or suppressing tics and just choosing not to tic. there is no on or off switch, like how theres a difference between masking autism and choosing not to have it.
Here’s the list of all the neurodivergent creatures I’ve discovered so far. I’ve redrawn the artwork to include more little friends and to be less copy paste-y.

JK- “Just Kidding” Tourette’s Creature, people with tourette’s don’t voluntarily say or do the tics that might be seen as rude or offensive.

TBH “To be honest” Autism Creature, people with autism typically are very brutally honest.

BTW “By the way” ADHD Creature, people with adhd have a tendency to jump from topic to topic.

IDK “I don’t know” Anxiety Creature, those with anxiety usually don’t understand why they feel so anxious.

WTF “What the f***” Depression creature, those with depression are most always frustrated with why they feel so negative.

N/A “None Applicable” Aphantasia Creature, people who have aphantasia cannot or have extreme difficulty with imagining or picturing their thoughts.

TMI “Too Much Information” Misophonia Creature, those who have misophonia cannot properly cancel out certain sounds

AFK “Away from keyboard” Dissociation Creature, individuals who dissociate have a tendency to feel as if they’re absent from their own body or mind.
@theevilicecreamsoda - tmi and n/a
@grymmdark - afk
@acemeiku on twitter - tbh
@dragon_cats on twitter - btw
idk’s creator is yet to be found my apologies
@pnkrathian - wtf

hey so I just saw a post about physical disabilities and it mentioned tourettes and now I'm interested - is it physical or mental? The answer I'll probably get is "both" but I want to know more.
If I use the wrong word or say something outright false or hurtful I apologize and I will edit this post upon request. Current thoughts below the cut
Physical - it affects impulse control, right? Not, like, impulsiveness as a personality but nerves firing in ways that they do not for people without tourettes. And it moves your body, your lips, your fingers, all that. I don't think it changes the way you think, or the way you feel, or the way you respond emotionally, but I don't actually know. @patlikesart argues that tourettes is physical, but tics can be triggered by a mental illness such as anxiety. @merricat, as someone suffering from no other mental illnesses or disabilities, furthers the physical disability argument for tourettes in saying that tourettes can just fire without the assistance from anxiety, depression, etc. Mental affects from it are referred to as "Neuropsychiatric" and are individual, despite stemming from neurological disorders.
Mental - it affects your nerves. For an octopus, most of their brains are spread out along their body as their nerves. Do nerves count as part of your brain? Tourettes doesn't affect muscle tissue or bones, it's just the nerves controlling those things. Where is the split between mind and body?
Again, if you want something updated, added, worded differently, removed, just tell me and I'll get on that.
OMG I LOVE IT

Drew my tourettes bunny from PlushieDreadfuls !
I love this bunny....they make me a little happier despite living with a very shitty condition that makes me feel very shitty a lot of the time. Also they are super duper soft and I'm just so in love with their color scheme and vibes.
I tried to showcase some of my specific tics, being a head and shoulder jerk, the arm to their chest is supposed to be like they are hitting themself with it,aswell as the facial tic they come with (although very stylized,of course.) I also made it so one of their ears is a bit jerked up!
Tourettes bunny how I love you...
This is the next day for the disability pride boogaloo by @thepromptfoundry!! It was “autonomy”! Took some inspiration from the puppet boy audio from TikTok lol. This mainly catered to my tics but feel free to interpret how you wish!!!
Puppet Girl
Dance dance dance
Sway sway sway
Do as they wish
Move as they wish
You are not allowed
To have your own moves
You are a puppet, girl
you move when they want to
Day 10 of @thepromptfoundry disability boogaloo!! Today it’s invisible disability. Mainly talking about my tics again :p but idc how you interpret any of my poems!!
No matter what you do
I’m invisible to the rest
Yet annoying to you
I won’t go away
No matter what you do
I’m always there
Stuck in the shadows
Yet never there
When you say “appear”
I am apart of you
No matter what you do

Convo with my roommate
Side note- I have Tourette’s
Roommate: *talking about something*
Me: *throws my m&m*
Roommate: what was that?
Me: my m&m
Roommate: why did you throw it?
Me: I have Tourette’s!
Roommate: oh ya!
Me: I used diversion
@randomfandomdreaming
Thing I find really weird about having Tourette’s is that sometimes I can go almost a whole day without a tic but then something random will happen or I’ll hear something that resembles a tic and my brain just goes “OH SH*T THATS RIGHT YOU HAVE TOURETTES! I ALMOST FORGOT” and then I’ll start ticking the rest of the day..
Unpopular Opinion
Self-diagnosing is invalid.
It can spend false information and harm the people who actually have said disorder.
(Just look at the "endogenic systems".)
Yess!
Like god damn, I want to play the game without constantly getting murdered because my body decided not to cooperate with me!
From Software please add Pause buttons as an accessibility option for the game.
Sincerely, a Bloodborne player with Tourettes
I hate the toxicity around souls games and pause buttons. Having Tourettes makes it fucking hard to do everything in one go without a pause button. Stop shaming and harassing people who want to be able to pause their god damn soulslike.
Heavy on the muscle strain/ pain and the not being able drive.
Someone came up to me yesterday and asked if I have Tourette's, and then proceeded to explain how they have no filter and that it'd be great to have Tourette's as an excuse for all of the random things they say.
This is a reminder that Tourette's is INVOLUNTARY and is NOT just speaking tics. It is PAINFUL self-injury tics, muscle and joint pain, repetitive strain injury, not being able to cook, not being able to drive, feeling excluded from spaces, being told off something you can't stop, being glared at, and more.
I hate it so much when people ask me to repeat my vocal ticks, when they didn't understand what it just said.
no I won't repeat something that has no bearing on our conversation, is cringe to repeat because I don't know if you knew it's a tick or not (it's actually very easy to tell if it's a tick or not but idk), and is just generally uncomfortable because just saying random shit is uncomfortable.
Kind of same, I don't mind if people joke around with my tics or respond to them (as long as it's people I know), but asking to repeat for basically no reason is cringe.
And I've just gone from awkwardly repeating the tick to looking at them like a deer in headlights and not answering anything. Like that we're both uncomfortable 👍🏻

Okay, so this has been a long time coming.
I’ve noticed people have begun to headcanon Remus as having Tourettes Syndrome as a way to explain his outbursts and cursing, and like, I know representation matters, but the way people are doing it is harmful to actual people with Tourettes.
Tourettes isn’t just people who say inappropriate things. Tourettes is scrunching up your face, or blinking rapidly, or shaking your hands, or scuffing your feet against the floor, or jerky arm movements, or small squeaks, or clearing your throat, or humming.
Tourettes isn’t just a convenient headcanon for a character who’s inappropriate, and treating it as such is not only extremely upsetting for people with Tourettes, but it also spreads the idea that Tourettes is a bad thing.
Tourettes is more than blurting curses or being nasty. Tourettes is people crying because their ticks take everything out of them, but they still can’t stop, because it’s involuntary, and they have to ride it out until their muscles are so sore that they burn and ache the next day.
Tourettes is also people getting anxious for a test and clicking their tongue, and having to be escorted from the room for a private place where they won’t disrupt their classmates.
Tourettes is parents heading into the earliest opportunity to meet a teacher, and sitting the teacher down to explain their kids ticks and explaining what times they need to take their medicine and the proper way to calm their child during an episode so they don’t work themselves up badly.
Tourettes is doctors keeping in mind that their patients are more likely to have things like anxiety, OCD, and bipolar disorder.
Tourettes is people who hit 20 and their ticks are gone, while others are 50 and still experience them.
Tourettes is getting asked, “Omg, is that why you curse?” and having to explain that no, your cursing is a choice, much like it is with most people.
Tourettes is not telling your classmates because they start referencing Family Guy and other media that makes fun of people with Tourettes.
Tourettes is also finding out your friend bought you a gift and spending the day squeaking and slapping any flat surface as fast as you can from excitement.
Tourettes is parents knowing when their kids are getting sick, because their ticks increase, and they know to take them to the doctor to get checked out so whatever sickness is going on can be treated.
Tourettes isn’t the ugly thing some of y’all twist it to be, and some people are uncomfortable when they see someone ticking in public, only to assign this headcanon to characters who fit negative stereotypes and say, “I’m so inclusive!”
Stop. If you’re going to headcanon a character with Tourettes, do it correctly, or don’t do it at all.
I know I’m talking to a brick wall but I don’t care.
I’d like to bring up the fact that when I see people writing dialogue for Ticci Toby, they ALWAYS get the stuttering wrong. (This also goes for any character with a stutter, not just Toby.)
Stuttering isn’t just repetition of the first letter and/or syllable. Example of how I always see it written: H-Hi. My na-name is Tic-Ticci Toby. How’s y-y-your day?
That’s a part of stuttering, yes, but there’s a lot more to it. For starters, the repetition also applies to entire words and not just letters or syllables. In a lot of people’s stutters, a few words will be repeated in a sentence a couple of times over.
Other parts of stuttering are the blocks and fillers. I’m sure if you’ve met literally anybody with a stutter, you know what I’m talking about. There will potentially be pauses sprinkled in the sentence, as well as fillers. Fillers are things such as “Erm, Uh, Uhm,” all that jazz.
So a more accurate way to type out stuttering would be this: Hi. My name.. my name is uh.. Tic-Ticci Toby. How’s uh.. how’s your day?” The stuttering can vary from person to person, of course. Some are far more noticeable than others.
That’s just a couple things. There’s more to stuttering, such as body and facial movements, but I ain’t about to explain it all. I recommend researching up on it! It’s actually pretty interesting stuff (to me at least).
Thanks :3 -Somebody with a smallish stutter
This and Toby’s Tourette Syndrome. Why doesn’t anybody add in vocal tics for Toby??? It baffles me.
Please, please remember:
The term “neurodivergent” describes people whose brain differences affect how their brain works.
It is not only autism and ADHD.
It's many many many things!
Including personality disorders, foetal alcohol syndrome, Downs Syndrome, Tourette's, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, bipolar disorder, Irlen syndrome, and more then I can list here.
If it's your brain differences that is affecting how your brain works...it's a neurodivergence!
Love you all. This is a mental health appreciation post and I’m insane and I just can’t not love you each so much.

Hey, listen here. Psst, down here.
Disability isn't a competition. You are not less or more disabled than another disabled individual. No one is "disabled enough." Saying that certain disabilities are not valid is ableism. You are not immune to ableism just because you're disabled.
If it affects your ability to do activities negatively, it's a disability.
Yes, this means chronic pain, yes this means joint pain, this means sensory issues, this means mental issues, this means brain damage, this means deformities, this mean developmental disabilities like ADHD, this means tic disorders and tics themselves, this means all disabilities. All disability is disabled enough.
