Doctor Danny Chapter 8

Vlad managed to squeak out of the situation with a cash fine and Lex Luther was supposed to be under surveillance. Despite being "victims", experimenting or holding a citizen, albeit a meta, was still illegal.

Danny however was currently with the justice league. They had brought him to a hospital but there wasn't much they could do for him there after discovering Danny had strange abnormalities with his DNA and heartbeat.

Jason sat by Danny's unconscious body while everyone tried to figure out what to do with the situation.

"Why didn't you tell me your boyfriend was a meta human Jason?!" Bruce demanded.

Jason looked shocked at first which quickly turns to anger.

"Are you kidding me?! First of all, when did we have such a close relationship? Because lately we could only manage a small conversation. Secondly I didn't know myself" Jason bit back the anger billowing inside him.

"He's got unknown powers and now Lex Luther knows about him" Superman said with a serious tone.

"who was that other guy?" The flash asked.

"Vladimir Masters, billionaire former mayor of Amity Park" Bruce said.

Jason didn't look at any of them, his guilty gaze fell on Danny.

"He's, how can we even tell if he's going to be alright?" Jason said.

The room fell into silence.

"Have faith Jason, that's all you can do"

Jason clentched his fist.

"I don't think so, I'm going to find another way" Jason stood up.

He locked eyes with Superman, "dont let him out of your sight. He's a prestigious doctor. He's important-"

Jason walked out, "he's important, to me"

Superman sat in the vacant chair and tried his best to use his own powers to figure out Danny's condition. There wasn't much medical data on Danny to begin with so they weren't sure what we considered normal for him. More than once superman had been sure Danny's heart had stopped, yet he was still alive somehow.

Bruce had conflicted feelings about the good doctor. Jason trusted him, then again Jason was a murdering crime lord out for revenge.

He knew Jason and Doctor Daniel had a special relationship, after all, one doesn't usually cripple people for just a friend.

Joker had yet to recover.

Back in the bat cave Jason was taking full advantage of the access to the oicie records. It was harder than he thought it would be to get information on Danny because he wasn't born in Gotham but he eventually found a lead.

According to the hospital records paired with surveillance cameras outside the city, courtesy of Tim, Jason found that Danny had come from Illinois.

There was also that girl, Sam was it? Did she know his secret? She had to know something right?

Tim glanced over at Jason's screen.

"Oh that's the lead of that startup band Twisted Vines." Tim commented.

Jason's head snapped towards Tim so fast he almost counted it as a jump scare.

"Do you know where they'll be playing next?!"

Tim pulled out his phone.

"They have an app, let's see...seems like their doing a gig at Croscee's Pub tonight"

Jason stood up.

"I'm going to that and your coming with me"

Tim was grinning from ear to ear. So cool!

Later that night Jason and Tim in civilian outfits made their way to the bar. The band had already started playing judging by the muffled music pounding through the wall.

Jason opened the door and maneuvered through the crowd of people before resting in a corner.

Tim on the other hand has made his way to he front and was avidly cheering the band on.

Jason was growing slightly pissed off. Danny was counting on him and the best he could do was watch this stupid concert.

The music eventually ended and the crowd of people tried to swarm the band but security held them at bay.

Jason had other means, he snuck into their bus.

The band members were obviously shocked to see a stranger sitting in their tour bus.

"Jason??" Sam asked. They relaxed, if Sam knew this person than it was probably alright.

"What are you doing here?"

Jason stood up.

"It's Danny, we need your help. Danny's not waking up"

Sam motioned for then to go outside.

"He was attacked by Vlad Masters and Lex Luther"

Sam clentched her teeth, "Vlad"

When she noticed the look on Jason's face she explained, "Vlad wanted to get with Danny's mom and kill his dad. He also cloned Danny several times. One time he was successful."

Jason could feel the pits bubble up in his chest.

"I need to see him. That's the only way I can tell you"

"I brought a car"

Sam nodded, "give me a minute" she said before climbing back onto the bus.

Tim ran up to Jason, "did you talk to her yet? What did she say?" He asked.

"Alright, I'm good to go" she said slinging a couple of her bags over her shoulder.

Tim's mouth went wide open.

"So cool" he whispered.

The car ride there Jason went into more detail.

Bruce was a little surprised that the answers Jason had went to find were in the formation of some rock punk.

Sam was admiring the space when she caught sight of Danny. She dropped her bags and ran over.

"How long has it been?"

"A couple days."

"Do you know what they injected him with? What about the state he was in when you found him?"

"He was injected with a drug that I don't recognize in the system or otherwise" Bruce said handing her the tablet.

Sams expression darkened, "blood blossoms, fucking bastards"

"He was extremely agitated but Jason managed to calm him down just before he fainted"

Sam handed back the tablet.

"Blood Blossoms are extremely harmful to gh- to people like Danny"

"No matter what I need everyone in this room to swear an oath not to say anything about Danny's condition. I know someone who can help him but I need you all to ask as little questions as possible"

"Where do you have to go?"

"Illinois"

"Take the jet" Bruce said. Jason nodded.

"And here, this is the contact of a friend who can give you a log of Danny's normal condition and what to do if he takes a turn for the worst."

It was Tuckers contact. Jason and Sam left and Bruce got on the contact.

Tucker had become a software engineer for AmerTek Industries in Metropolis.

Flash said he would pick him up and left before anyone could object.

Tucker had been finishing up a report on a new robot the company was in the planning stages of creating, next thing Tucker knew he was in the arms of somebody going at incredibly fast speeds to somewhere.

"Oh" is all he said when they filled him in.

"Sams already on it huh" he sisd with a nervous smile.

"She always so on top of things"

"She told us we could find his medical information with you"

Tucker blinked, "oh yeah! We had to create an updated version. After the accident Danny couldn't get checked by normal doctors anymore. Thank ancients his parents were so oblivious-" Tucker stopped talking when he saw their faces.

"Did Sam not tell you about that? Maybe I've said too much. In any case if there's something you don't understand, let me know"

He handed over the digital file on Danny.

Not even two seconds later Bruce was grilling Tucker on what ectoplasm was and what machine caused this to happen.

There was also a detailed report on what devices the Fenton's had made and how they interacted with Danny.

"What's this page?" Tim asked scrolling onto the page filled with a list of all the ghosts Danny had fought and their abilities.

"I,uhm, well I don't think I should-"

Tucker shrank under Batmans judgmental stare.

"Sams going to skin me alive for this but, I suppose I should tell you everything"

The heroes listened, stunned at the words coming out of Tuckers mouth.

Not only had they not known about the mad "ghost hunting" scientists. They also had known about the portal to the infinite realms.

They were even more shocked when he told them Danny had been crowned king.

"He was a teenage superhero and we were his support team"

Tucker smiled, "nows he's still saving lives. Danny really is something else"

Bruce had went to eh next room to brood over his failure to see all of this whole Supes glumly accepted the fact that he couldn't have done anything without knowing.

"You guys don't need to be so down about it. Any transmissions Danny tried to get to you guys was most definitely being blocked by Vlad and his fancy equipment"

Clark shook his head.

"So Vlad and Danny have history" Flash said.

"Yeah, deep history. In fact. Vlad shares Danny's condition. They're both liminals"

Tucker scowled, "he's literally a villain. Danny's been dealing with this guy for years."

"I can't imagine being a fourteen year old hero"

A glum look passed over Tuckers face.

"We, haven't talked in a while. But I should've tried. I knew he was going through something rough. It was hard for him. Didn't help that he was bullied either. Danny too nice for his own good"

"For now, all we can do is monitor his condition. Have faith in your friend"

Tucker nodded. Danny would wake up. He was sure of it.

I think Lance hates the cold, not just because he has a lot of dragon and flying types, but because of ✨trauma✨

Like maybe he ended up falling through the cave floor of the ice path and nearly froze to death

I also think it’d be funny if someone asked Lance why he hates the cold so much and he just pulls off his two fake fingers and says cause I got frostbite and everyone loses it

Well, This Year Was Definitely The Worst. I Tried To Create Some Holiday Mood But It Didn't Help Very

Well, this year was definitely the worst. I tried to create some holiday mood but it didn't help very much. Especially after today's attack. So there is Frostbite and her gift of light (quite interesting that I choose this idea). Can't remember any description of her. But it was fun, played with effects a little bit. I hope everyone gets wat they deserved in next year. Understand these words in any way you want.

HEROSONAS PHANCOMIC MASTER POST

This is the master list of the Phancomics I’m making based on @nerdpoe and @spidori prompt ideas that Danny’s master plan to hide his ghost identity is to pretend to be a meta. But not just any meta. He somehow makes 10 different Hero Identities based on his various ghost powers and named dp for/inspired by his various ghost friends/mentors.

Well @maiden-of-asgard , is it a frostbite concept? 😂😂love our blue boi, he a bean

Guys

Guys

What if Loki was, somehow, never a runt? What if Odin ASSUMED he was a runt? And he kept believing that because Asgardian diet/environment isn't appropriate for a Frost Giant and affected Loki's growth but obviously nobody noticed because he was normal size for an Asgardian?

What if Loki had gotten more in contact with his Jotun side and suddenly started to grow, like,a LOT??

I just realized something

Aside from Leo and Danny being sassy superhero teenagers who love to make puns and jokes, they have another thing in common:

Being friends with an adult

Leo with Hueso and Danny with Frostbite

omigosh?? Frostbite and hueso being like cool uncles / second fathers for their little idiot super teens is amazing actually :0

Side note: I wonder what would happen if Dan and Future Leo met? They're both future versions of the kids, and they both suffered through losing everyone they know. Dan is also half glad so it's not the samez-same, but it's interesting to think about

(i had this all written out, and then the app broke on me, so here's take two)

Ghost Writer was somewhere between relieved and pissed. Only so many words translate correctly across languages, but none of them can accurately describe how he was feeling.

The Realms had been in chaos for both days and eons. Their King, the child they had raised, had been taken from them. He had been taken from their reach, hidden from their sight. The Realms would not rest until he was back safely in her arms.

John Constantine was a man who was known throughout the afterlives connected to this specific Realm of Reality. He was known as a con man and a thief. Ghost Writer knew him as an ally. A tentative ally, but an ally nonetheless. John Constantine turned over old tomes of magic and Magiks that he deemed too dangerous in the hands of humans and human adjacents to Ghost Writer in exchange for a single favor.

Based solely on the man's reputation, Ghost Writer had assumed the man would attempt to turn the deal around on him. He was glad he was wrong.

"Child," Ghost Writer sat on the wooden stool beside the bed, "They will no longer harm you."

Phantom had been conscious when Ghost Writer had arrived. The child had watched he and John Constantine move into and about the room. Now, under the Concept's gentle hand and careful watch, he allowed himself to sleep. His Obsession would help him heal, but it could not do so alone.

John Constantine ran a hand through his hair in lieu of lighting the cigarette he held between his lips. "This is who you all were looking for, right?"

"That is correct." and fairly obvious.

"Who is he?"

Right, this man had been to an afterlife, but he had never died. He had never become one of Phantom's people. "He is The Great One, The Protector. He is Space, he is Balance. He is the Realm's Child. He is our King."

John was impressed, but he didn't announce that other than a dip of his head in a bow to the Child King. Then, he said, "I don't trust human doctors to be able to help him. I don't think he'd want to be anywhere near a human doctor, actually. Will you call a Healer for him?"

"I already have." Ghost Writer laid his hand over Phantom's, reassurance to the child that he is not alone. He is safe now.

"You have?"

"Indeed." There were not many Healers in the Realms that would heal living beings. There are fewer still who would willingly heal those of this Realm of Reality for what they had done to The King. They would all make an acception to help their King. "He is The King's Healer."

John Constantine is a man who makes it a point to remind living beings of their mortality. There are many who claim immortality, but he knows that there is no such thing. The only beings to achieve true immortality are the ones who have died and the ones born with and from Space and Time. He is very aware that he is in a room with two extremely powerful beings. He knows that a third one is on the way. The power from one of them could bring a weaker man to his knees. And John Constantine is about to be in an enclosed room - in space - with three of them.

"What's the damage?" the occultist asked the Concept given form, "What's going to happen to the people here?"

A deep voice tore through the air, opening a rip in the middle of the room as it spoke. "Those who did this will be punished."

"All who worked at the facility," Ghost Writer continued, "all who allowed and promoted their work, and all who supported them will be put on Trial within the Infinite Realms."

The yeti was now fully in the room, the Rio closing behind him. "They will be sentenced to Punishment for whatever time remains of their natural life."

"When they die, they will be sent to the Void." Ghost Writer whispered, though his voice carried as though he'd yelled.

"A place of existing without existing. A paradox." The yeti growled, "A merciful end for the likes."

"Frostbite," Ghost Writer greeted, his eyes leaving Phantom, "You will heal him?"

"Of course," Frostbite said, "I will do what I can here, but he will have to be taken to the Far Frozen so that I may help him properly."

"This world has heroes, did you know?" The Concept moved to sit on the foot of the bed, his hand moving to rest on Phantom's ankle so that Frostbite could examine him.

"Other than Phantom?" Frostbite asked, "I did not know."

John felt as though the weight of the Sky was dropped on him, but he didn't stumble. He knew that showing weakness to beings and entitles stronger than him was a good way to get killed slowly and painfully for their enjoyment. He spoke anyway, "Phantom-" He cut himself off at the glare from Ghost Writer and Frostbite. "King Phantom," he amended, "was- is? was a hero here?"

"Yes," Frostbite smiled smally, "He was born here, he was raised here, he lived here, and he died here. He is Balance. He is The Protector."

"He protects the living from the dead and the dead from the living." Ghost Writer said.

"And the living fucked it up." John finished. He sighed. "I'll alert the others to your decision. They won't interfere."

"Good," Ghost Writer stood and looked John in the eye, "Keep your favor. You have earned it." Then, the three beings were gone.

John Constantine is a man who is consciously aware of how easy it is to die. He knows the different afterlives and those who run them as well as he knows his own past.

The Justice League will keep out of the way of supernatural affairs. They will warn against getting in the way of the Ghost's Retribution. They will turn a blind eye or they will die for complacency.

John leaves the room and lights his cigarette, rules be damned. He's used to cleaning up messes, but this is of a scale on its own.

Don't know why but I kind of want to use that one scene from Prince of Egypt where the Nile turns into blood with like the Lazarus pits turning the blood after the Giw kidnapped Danny like the pits and Lazarus Island are just turning into dark red blood and we'll be like this until Danny's returned back as their King like every place that has like a high level of death energy now has things turn into like locus or like ancient curses until Danny's returned

Also every ghost acting like a feral monster cuz the king is gone and that means they're stableness is gone with the King

Oh interesting.

The world was in chaos. No one knew what had caused the change. But suddenly supernatural entities and forces everywhere were causing chaos. Batman had been in the cave when the Lazarus Pit turned blood red. Shortly after he heard reports from Crime Alley. Hood had flown into the worst murderous rampage yet. The two incidents were clearly linked. He is to sedate Hood to stop his rampage. H was currently in an induced coma.

Jason was hardly the only one affected. Everyone he knew that had been revived by the pits? Were more angry, rash, prone to violence. Talia had called as well. Every put under the control I the LoA? Were affected the same way. Then he got the calls from Constantine and other members of JLD. Ghosts everywhere were causing massive amounts of damage. To both people and property.

Any people who were sensitive to death magic? Were either angry, depressed or in pain. Something he happened. But they were at a loss as to what. The fact they were compromised wasn't helping. He could feel his control sipping the longer this went on. Robin had been benched. He was currently far too likely to cause damage.

Then they found the starting clue. A city in Illinois was under constant attack by ghosts. Amity Park had been evacuated now for the most part. One facility seemed to be the focus of the attacks. Whatever was causing this? Was likely being held there. The government was being obstructionist at best. And with their collective patience being stretched to the limit? That wasn't going to keep them out of that facility.

Whumptober Day 12

WARNINGS: STARVING, PASSING OUT, FROSTBITE

CHAPTER 13: STARVATION

This was why Legend had retired. He was so tired of being randomly dropped in different worlds with inhospitable environments!

“This is mine, well, sort of,” explained Time. “It’ll take a few days to get out of the cold. I just wonder why Termina.” Legend shook his head. Maybe Hylia is trying to validate my reasons for retirement? He laughed to himself.  As if!

Legend looked around and began a headcount. It was safe to assume that the portals might separate them.

“Where’s Wind and Twilight?” he asked.

****

Twilight and Wind were alone. In a tundra. With no food. This was going to be awful. Twilight looked around for any sign of the others, but there was nothing. No smoke, no fire light, no footprints. He didn’t want to risk scaring Wind by becoming a wolf and trying to catch the group’s scent, plus, there was no way Wind could keep  up with him in that form.

“I’m g-guessing we’re going to have to f-find the edge of the snow b-by ourselves, aren’t we?” asked Wind.

“That just about sums it up,” agreed Twilight. They both agreed on a direction that they believed would take them out of the tundra sooner than later, and began trudging through the thick snow. The two started out hopeful. They had a nice conversation, and Wind occasionally would ask to be on Twilight’s shoulders so that he could warm up on Twilight’s pelt.

When night came, the wind picked up and the air became even colder. They had to stop so that they didn’t freeze. And almost every day went like that. There was no game in sight, or anything that could be food. But at least they could melt some snow and drink it as water.

As the days went by, their spirits dropped further and further. How large can this tundra be? There was absolutely no sign of life of any kind. Wind was clearly starting to wear down, but he couldn’t be helped in the cold. They needed to get out, and fast.

On the seventh day, Wind collapsed. He was too cold, and too light. Twilight scooped him up and carried him. They needed to make it out.

Twilight took no breaks. The wind had grown harsher and colder, and was unforgiving to any living thing that tried to resist it. Twilight felt his hands go completely numb. He stumbled in the snow and had to regain his balance before he accidentally crushed Wind.

But the worst thing? The hunger. It burned within Twilight. He needed to eat, and he was going to starve if he didn’t. But he had no food, and the tundra clearly wasn’t going to give him any. Yet, he continued on. Wind’s life was in his hands, quite literally.

He saw the edge on the ninth day of walking. He saw smoke and fire light. He longed to get there. His feet were dragging, but he pushed himself. He could make it! All he needed to do was walk about half a mile more, and he would be safe. Wind would be safe, which is what really mattered.

He was about twenty feet away from the camp when he finally collapsed. He heard concerned voices and footsteps shuffling towards him. He looked up into Wild and Time’s concerned eyes, then his vision faded to black.

*****

“They’re both starved!” called Hyrule. “Twilight has severe frostbite and Wind seems entirely unconscious.”

“Make a broth!” added Legend.

Time and Warriors carried the two freezing heroes to the fire. Wind began to stir before Twilight did. He eventually opened his eyes and looked around.

“Where’s Twi? Is he okay? Oh, Hylia, he had to carry me for miles and–”

“He’s okay Wind, don’t worry,” said Time. “Well, he’ll be okay anyways.” Wind started to relax.

“I am so hungry,” he commented.

“It’s only a wonder. You guys were out there without food for twelve days.”

Twilight groaned and pushed himself up. “I smell food, and death couldn’t stop me from eating it right now.”

Wild laughed. “It’s not quite done yet, you can go back to sleep.”

“And risk missing out on food? Never.” The Chain ate and everyone was satisfied. They began to go to sleep for the night.

Warriors called Sky over. “I’m assigning you Twilight tonight,” he said cryptically.

“Understood, sir!” grinned Sky. Twilight wasn’t going to complain when Sky was hugging him like a blanket all night. He was warm, and that’s all that mattered.

Title: The Honoring Ceremony

Prompt #: PR100

Prompt used: A ghost friend invites Danny to participate in an important ghost culture ritual or event. Soft and cozy body horror encouraged. AUs like mer AU, dragon AU, fae AU, etc. are OK, just replace ‘ghost’ with whatever Danny is half of.

Prompter: @five-rivers / Marsalias (on AO3)

Word Count: 1,668

Chapters: 1

You can read on AO3 or down below the cut

“Great one! I'm so glad you could make it!” Frostbite greeted with open arms and a huge smile.

“Of course! Wouldn’t miss it!” Danny said as he flew right into Frostbite’s chest to receive the best of hugs. Frostbite’s fur was soft and warm like a well-worn blanket fresh from the dryer and his arms were strong enough to squish all the tension out of his spine.

Once Danny had his fill he floated up to sit on Frostbite’s shoulder as they went to the center of town.

They chatted as they went. Danny caught Frostbite up on how things were at school and the ghosts that had their butts kicked by him.

“It’s always good to hear you are still doing such an excellent job in keeping your home safe.”

Danny felt his cheeks get warm and his core lightly buzzed from the praise.

“Thanks. I do what I can.” Danny said in what he hoped came off as casual gratitude and not embarrassment or arrogance.

“Speaking of your good work, my people and I were hoping we could honor you properly after the feast?”

“Oh?” Danny had no idea what that could mean. He thought they had been “properly honoring” him the whole time with the whole Great One title and all.

“We normally would have done it right after your great victory, but we’ve never done it for anyone so young, or not a member of our tribe.” Frostbite said, “But you have mastery over ice and you are more than just an honorary member. It’s long past due that we celebrate you.”

Danny wasn’t sure how, but Frostbite had once again blown him away with so much praise in a single sentence than he ever got from anyone else in his whole life.

He wasn’t sure he’d be able to handle any more praise, but it seemed like it was a really important thing for Frostbite and his people to do.

“I don’t have to make a speech or anything, do I?”

“It’s nothing like that. You just have to sit in the chair. We’ll do all the work.”

“I guess that doesn't sound too bad.”

“So you’ll let us honor you?”

“Sure? Why not?”

“Excellent!” Frostbite said with an even wider grin and a gleam in his eye that Danny couldn’t quite place. “But first we feast!”

==============================================

News that Danny was going to have his honoring ceremony spread before they even sat down to eat.

They pulled out a special chair for him to sit in. It was made of ice like all the other furniture in the Far Frozen, but this chair was different. It was actually a chair and not just a bench. It was also proportionate to him, not something huge for the yetis to sit in. Although the legs of the chair were much taller than a normal chair. Which was good because otherwise, it would have been too short to reach the table.

It was also intricately carved with lots of detailed lines and even his insignia in several different spots. Which only proved that they made this chair just for him.

It was also surprisingly comfortable. He could take a nap in it if he really wanted to.

They also gave him a golden circlet for him to wear. It had a bright blue stone that rested nicely against his forehead.

It felt a bit much, but Frostbite said it was part of the honoring ceremony.

Danny was just glad his friends weren’t here, they’d probably joke that it looked like a princess tiara or something stupid like that.

Luckily once it was on, he hardly noticed it was there.

The feast had so much delicious food and Danny ate until he was stuffed.

Once everyone was finished Danny was a little worried that maybe he ate too much, because when Frostbite announced it was time for the Honoring Ceremony, he did not want to get up.

However, that quickly turned out to not be an issue at all, because a pair of yeti’s picked him up by the chair and carried him to where the Honoring Ceremony was going to be held.

They traveled to a part of the village that Danny had never been to before. It was behind the main area in a cave that was much darker than any of the other ones and was lit with blue-flamed torches.

The cave was mostly open save for one wall that had four throne-like chairs atop a pedestal with nameplates. Each one had a different title, The Mighty, The Fierce, The Brave, and The Loyal.

Each seat had an intricately carved yeti wearing a circlet sitting in it. Their horns were much larger than any of the other yeti’s in the room, so much so that the tips of them touched the ceiling.  They looked more like those classic marble statues of Greek gods in museums than any other ice sculpture that Danny had seen around the village, with how much detail was in each tuft of fur and fold of fabric from their tunics. Their chairs were also beautifully carved as the one Danny sat in now.

If it weren’t for being made entirely of ice and how each one had its eyes closed, he would have assumed they were just more Yeti’s waiting for them.

There was a fifth pedestal at the end of the row, it was much higher than the others and it was missing a chair.

The yetis carrying him set him down on the pedestal, which was tall enough that he was at eye level with all the sitting ice yetis.

Danny wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, but Frostbite had only said he was just supposed to sit there. So he did.

Once the yetis who had carried him had rejoined the group, Frostbite stood beside him and started to tell the story of how Danny had fought against Pariah Dark and even his fights against all the other big bads he had after that too.

There was a lot of emphasis on how strong, and brave, and wonderful he was because of all that he had done.

Normally he would be feeling super flustered and flattered by all of this positive attention, but he wasn’t as phased by it because he was starting to get tired.

It didn’t help that the cave was dimly lit and that Frostbite’s voice was so deep and soothing that his regaling tale of Danny’s accomplishments sounded more like a bedtime story.

He did his best to stay awake but the more he fought it, the harder it got to keep his eyes open.

He blinked hard and when he opened his eyes Frostbite wasn’t talking anymore. In fact, no one was saying anything.

He was pretty sure Frostbite had been in the middle of a sentence the last time he checked.

Now everyone was looking at him. Or at least he thought they were, it was much darker in the cave now.

Frostbite was closer now, his large paw gently holding Danny’s head.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t ruin it did I?”

“Not at all, Great One. You’re doing perfectly.”

“I am?”

“Yes.”

Danny sighed in relief, he’d been so worried he ruined this super-important ceremony thing.

Now that he wasn’t worried about that, he noticed it was snowing.

Which, while not an odd thing to happen in the Far Frozen, it was odd to be happening in a cave.

Also odd that it was only happening over his head.

The snow was soft but it had a weight to it. It was like an oversized blanket and with the way it collected on his lap, it looked like one too.

“You’ve done so much for us, Great One. So much more than we would have ever asked of you. So much good. And you did it all so bravely.” Frostbite said to him softly as he gently rubbed the pad of his thumb against Danny’s cheek.

Danny was too tired to respond so he just leaned into the touch.

“May your stress be lifted off of your shoulders and your worries out of your mind.”

Danny winced when a sharp twin pain on either side of his head made itself known.

“It’s alright,” Frostbite reassured, “there’s no need to fight it. Just let them go.”

Danny wasn’t really sure what that meant, but he was too tired to think about it. He figured the best way to not fight, was to relax. So he did.

He went as relaxed as he could. Completely wet noodle limp.

Normally this would have caused him to fall out of the chair he was in, but there was so much snow on him his body couldn’t move. Frostbite’s hand was still holding his head steady so he didn’t have to deal with his head flopping over and getting a crick in his neck. That was nice of him.

There was the distinct sound of ice. It was forming, cracking, and branching.

It was hard to locate the sound with his eyes closed, but it seemed to be going away from him, so it was probably fine.

Danny wasn’t worried.

“That’s perfect Great One,” Frostbite said as he slipped his paw away from Danny’s face.

Danny thought that his head would drop the second Frostbite let go but it didn’t. It stayed perfectly still.

The snow was up to his chin now and still falling. Maybe that’s why he couldn’t move his head.

If he wasn’t so tired he’d open his eyes to look. Then again, the amount of snowflakes on his eyelashes was heavy enough to keep them closed anyway.

“Great One, we thank you for all that you have done. Now it’s time to rest, you’ve more than earned it.”

It didn’t take long for the snow to cover Danny completely.

He couldn’t see, he couldn’t hear, he couldn’t move.

There was nothing else he could do but sleep.

So he did.

“Hey. Uh, Johnny?” Danny said awkwardly, “What does it mean when one of the older ghosts calls you their favored and why does it freak people out?”

Johnny 13 gave the halfa a bewildered look, “Dude. Didn’t you listen to Death? At all?”

“Death?” Danny scrunched his face, “What do you mean? I don’t…”

“Wait.” Johnny straightened, “You’ve talked with Death, right? She explained-?”

Danny shook his head, confused, “Was I supposed to?”

“When you first died, she’s supposed to appear. She gives a whole spiel and then transfers a bunch of information.” Johnny frowned, “She did it for Plasmius, so it’s not a halfa thing.”

“Oh.” Danny looked down, “What if… What if someone died and came back a few times very quickly? Would that… Would that cause any problems?”

Johnny stilled, horrified, “Ok. Look, do you want to talk about your death? Because I’m not asking if you don’t, but...”

“I guess…” Danny said, “So you know that my parents made the portal, right?”

“Yeah.” Johnny said.

“They’d been trying to do it for a long time. Plasmius actually worked with them for a while back when they were in college. It’s why all of their tech is similar in design.” Danny explained, “They built the thing, plugged it in, turned it on… and nothing.”

“But it works now.” Johnny frowned.

“Yeah. It does.” Danny nodded, “But remember my friends? Sam and Tucker?”

“The edgy emo and the computer geek?”

“As Sam’s friend, I am obligated to inform you that she is goth not emo… but yes, those two.” Danny smiled sadly, “My mom and dad were upset. They left the house and Jazz was working her shift at a library. The whole house was empty and I was… you know. A normal teenager home alone.”

Johnny snorted at that, “Ah yes. A completely normal teenager

“Yeah, yeah. The point is, the first thing I did after being left home alone was call my friends over.” Danny rolled his eyes, “Told them what happened and… It was Sam who suggested we go down there first — she’s always been into ghost and occult stuff — and look around. Tucker was down, because it was tech even if we didn’t think most of the tech would work. He wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to mess around with it. Jazz had given me some lectures on lab safety — my parents don’t usually follow it themselves — and I had a bad feeling so I put on the Hazmat suit.”

“That’s not a superhero costume you came up with?” Johnny asked, eyes widening.

“No, um. It’s a hazmat suit. The only way I changed my form was the insignia and even then that was Sam’s idea.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah, but um….” Danny paused, “We wound up standing outside the portal. It wasn’t working or anything, but there was a big spooky metal hole in the wall. You know, the kind of thing you’d expect in sci-fi movies. Sam dared me to go in and I was nervous. That bad feeling just intensified, but again — fourteen. I wasn’t being smart about it. So… I went into it. I kept going and it was dark. I was turning back when I tripped and I flailed. Accidentally hit some button that was on the side and it turned on.”

Johnny took a sharp breath.

“And um. Did you know that the portal takes a lot of electricity to start up?” Danny joked weakly, “Took three blocks worth. Um, lots of ectoplasm, too — from both the zone and the artificial stuff my parents use.” He shuffled, “So um, turns out both those things can revive and kill people. So I just kind of — died and revived a lot until it turned on and basically spat me out into the lab.

“That’s - Kid…”

“So um, maybe since I was dying and reviving so much death didn’t have a chance to fill me in? Honestly, would have like the heads up.” Danny said sheepishly, “I didn’t even understand what had happened until ghosts started coming through the portal.”

“Seriously?”

Danny shrugged, “I mean, I kind of suspected. I was falling through floors. It was hard to ignore, but I didn’t know - My parents are good inventors, but not the best scientists and it made things hard to figure out.”

“What? You bought that whole non-sentient BS?”

“No.” Danny shook his head, “I just didn’t buy any of it — and I mean none of it. I wanted nothing to do with the whole thing. The whole town thought my parents were crazy, they were always in the lab working, and I only ever saw them briefly once or twice a day. Don’t get me wrong. They’re still my parents and I love them, but… they have two big priorities. Their work and their kids. Their work is just… a higher priority to them.”

“Oh.” Johnny cringed, “Oh. Kid…”

“So yeah. Life sucks. Death sucks… but I really need to know what to do and why Ember is freaking out over me being called ‘favored one’.”

“Uh, right.” Johnny paused, “Well, it’s like old ghost language. Um. Basically, it’s like being called a really, really close friend or adopted family. Kind of like… ‘hey, this is my person that I love and protect’. It’s platonic unless they specify otherwise.”

“Huh, okay.” Danny blinked, “That makes sense, but why would Ember freak out?”

“Well… who called you that?”

“Oh! Clockwork and Pandora call me that when I visit.”

Johnny blanched, “What?”

“And now you’re freaking out, too.”

“You’ve been just- Kid! Are you just casually talking to them?”

“Um, yeah? They said it was okay?”

“Do you know nothing about the hierarchy of the- Wait. No. You didn’t get to talk to Death. Of course you don’t-“ Johnny sighed — covering his eyes, “Okay, so do you know what the ancients are?”

“I thought that was just a saying.”

“No, it’s not-” Johnny pinched the bridge of his nose, “The Ancients are the most powerful spirits in the Zone. They’re ghosts, but they resemble ideals more than they do a person most of the time. Practically gods. The ancients are Undergrowth, Frostbite, Nocturne, Pandora, Clockwork, Vortex, and Pariah Dark. Thing is… where most ghosts plateau at a certain power level the ancients can just keep growing in power. Clockwork is one of the strongest — so strong, the Observants bound him to their will.”

“Yeah, I heard about that, but he’s really nice, you know.” Danny smiled, “And he makes really good cookies really fast.”

Johnny stared at Danny for a long moment, “Danny. Do you not hear yourself right now? He’s basically the god of time.”

“Yeah, but if he didn’t want me to visit, I wouldn’t be able to find him.” Danny shrugged, “So he told me if I can see the clocktower, I’m welcome to come in.”

“Kid…”

“Besides. I’m friends with half of those guys and they’re cool.”

“Wha- How many ancients do you know?”

“Um… All the ones you just listed? I’m friends with Frostbite, Pandora, and Clockwork. I fought Undergrowth, Vortex and Nocturne before, but Nocturne likes me now. Um, Undergrowth doesn’t like me, though. Loves Sam, though… Um, obviously I know who Pariah Dark is after the whole thing in Amity-“

Johnny stilled, “Wait a minute… Kid. I need you to answer me honestly here… Did Pariah ever mention a challenge when you fought him?”

“Well, um. I guess? He was all formal speak, though, so…”

“Kid.” Johnny said very slowly, “Did he ever issue a challenge or accept a challenge from you?”

“… Um. He did say that he accepted my challenge or something, but wasn’t that just fight-talk or…”

“I think I get it now.” Johnny sighed, facepalming, “Just… maybe don’t tell people about this and consider asking one of the ancients allies you have about what Pariah accepting your challenge means for you.”

“For me? What-“

“Just… give it some thought.” Johnny paused, “And- Well, I can talk to Ember for you, yeah?”

“Thanks.”

Danny curled up on a sofa as Pandora embraced him with three arms and ran her fourth hand through his hair.

“Pandora.” Danny said softly, “Some of my friends say you, Frostbite, and Clockwork are ancients.”

“They are correct.”

“I didn’t know what ancients were.”

“I noticed.” Pandora laughed a bit, “But you’re a sweet child. You helped me get my box back and did not demand my favor. Perhaps it was selfish not to tell you, but I didn’t want to distress you. You are a kind and humble soul. Is it such a surprise I wish to continue seeing you?”

“You thought I would stop if I did?” Danny asked, confused, “I mean, sure my other friends were shaken up by it, but they don’t know you. Why would I be afraid when you’re so nice?”

Pandora blinked and then smiled warmly — a little laugh pulling from her throat. Oh, the innocence of such a young spirit, “Why, indeed? I suppose I didn’t give you or myself enough credit, did I?”

Danny shrugged, “I don’t have room to judge people for being different anyway. I’m a halfa. Pretty sure that’s even rarer than being an Ancient, right?”

“I suppose that is true.” Pandora smiled, “There are only a few halfas and none are quite like you. There will only ever be one of you.”

“Does this have something to do with why I never got to meet death?” Danny asked, confused, “That’s the only thing I can find that seems all that different-“

“In a way… Yes, but there are many more differences. The main one is that you powers have grown beyond Vlad Masters and they continue to do so.” Pandora said, “You are what we call a ‘Juna Potenco’. Most realms will never have heard of such things, but us ancients do not forget and when faced with a gift like yourself… well, you’ll only see more of us with time.”

“What does that mean? Is it bad?”

“No, no. It is a gift, not a punishment.” Pandora promised, “You are an inspiring soul, favored one, and it seems the realms themselves have seen that.”

“That doesn’t sound right.” Danny pulled away and sat up as he shook his head, “I’m a halfa, but that’s what I am. It doesn’t say anything about who I am. There isn’t anything special about who I am.”

“Everyone else disagrees with that last statement.” Pandora shook her head, “But I will let you in on the secret.”

“Yeah?”

“These are not due to your half spirit nature, but something truly special.” Pandora cupped his cheek, “Danny, do you truly wish to know? As amazing as this is, I am not sure you will be ready for the truth just yet.”

“I’m - I’ve been debating what colleges to apply for, but… I don’t know if any of them will take me now with my grades. I still look fourteen — fifteen at the oldest… and I still feel fourteen.” Danny looked at Pandora with pleading eyes, “So if this would impact my future, I think I’d like to know. Before things get complicated.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Suddenly, everything froze.

Danny looked up to see Clockwork putting a medallion on Pandora while Frostbite gave him a smile.

“I presume you’re here to assist in informing him?” Pandora asked.

“Indeed.” Frostbite nodded.

“Informing me of what?” Danny asked, confused.

“When you went to face Pariah Dark, you stated your intention to fight him.” Clockwork said, “And he accepted your challenge. You fought in single combat, removed the Crown of Fire from his head, and then managed to get him into the Sarcophagus of Forever Sleep.”

“Vlad-“

“Plasmius might have locked the Sarcophagus, but you have repeatedly bested him and even when he has gotten the best of you, it has not been in single combat. However, Plasmius at one point claimed your fight was a ‘fun challenge’. You agreed — officially accepting it as such. When you defeated him, he lost any fragile claim to the throne.”

“Claim to the- Wait. What are you saying?” Danny glanced between them, “What? No. No… you have to be kidding me. I’m just me. I was trying to help, not-“

“Child, your soul was always going to be tied to the zone one way or another.” Pandora said, “Mortality is already a fragile thing, but someone so surrounded by ectoplasm at a young age all while experiencing the struggles you did with your parents absence… it was inevitable that you would be a powerful ghost.”

“But, then, Great One.” Frostbite continued, “You stood fully emerged in the space between worlds and thought of protection and forgiveness — mercy. You did not even consider vengeance or desires of your own. Only the wellbeing of others. It is an act of great sacrifice and not one many can complete so fully.”

“To put it simply, Danny.” Pandora said, “You’re one of us, Juna Protenco. New and young power that will grow infinitely. Though you are far from ancient, you will be with time.”

“An ancient to be.” Danny said distantly.

“The Ancient of Protection, Space, Mercy, and Matter.” Clockwork turned into his newborn form, “The best candidate for king we’ve had in a long time. Though, perhaps I am a bit biased.”

“Does it have something to do with space-time?” Danny guessed, “Because Matter, Time, and Space…”

“Correct.” Clockwork smirked, “Matter tells spacetime how to curve, and curved spacetime tells matter how to move. I guide you and you make changes that I will use to guide you again.”

Dannu blinked, “Oh. I get it.”

“You do?” Pandora blinked.

“That’s domains for you.” Frostbite chuckled and then quickly explained when Danny gave him a confused look, “We all innately understand our domains and their meanings. My domain is progression, society, and advancement.”

“Mine is responsibility, hope, protection, and perseverance.” Pandora revealed.

“Indeed.” Clockwork transformed into the middle aged man again, “But now that you know of your future, we must prepare.” He put his hand on Danny’s shoulder, “Your coronation must happen by the time you turn eighteen. As Ghost King, you will need to learn some diplomatic skills. We will teach you while you finish your human schooling.” Clockwork promised, “You can tell your parents the truth or you can say you are simply leaving for college, but Maddie and Jack Fenton cannot move to the Zone with you. Your sister is welcome. Your friends are welcome, but unfortunately…”

“I understand.” Danny lowered his head, “I don’t think I’ll tell them just yet. Maybe I’ll leave a note or a video, but…”

Clockwork’s eyes glazed over briefly — clearly checking the timeline.

“That is a good idea.” Clockwork nodded.

“Okay.” Danny swallowed, “I can’t -”

“No.” Clockwork said, “Honored as these two would be, they have their duties and people. They cannot. I am both bound by the Observants and a little too prone to acts of selfishness. It is too much power for me. No. It must be you.”

“You’re not selfish. You helped me.” Danny tilted his head, confused.

Clockwork chuckled guiltily as Pandora made a face and Frostbite shifted awkwardly.

“There is a reason people fear me, Danny.” Clockwork seemed more amused than anything by the sudden awkwardness, “I appreciate your trust in me, but I was not so good or kind in life. I hold domain over regret and retribution as well as time. It is a position I earned after giving and getting both in equal measure. I am not a protective spirit by nature. I am one that seeks justice and sometimes revenge.”

“I don’t get it.” Danny frowned, confused.

“Soon, you will.” Clockwork said grimly, “But for now… Trust me when I say all is as it should be.”

“Okay.” Danny said, “I trust you.”

“Now, time in.” Clockwork said. When Danny tried to give him the medallion he shook his head, “No, hold onto it. I believe it goes without saying, but do not lose it.”

“I know. I won’t.” Danny promised.

“Good, now… I believe you have some friends to talk to?”

“Er, right!” Danny said and rushed off.

“He doesn’t know who you are?” Frostbite turned to Clockwork, “And you haven’t told him?”

“… He’ll learn during his studies.” Clockwork admitted begrudgingly, “And it’s best that he come to me after he processes the information than during.”

“Just remember, Kronos.” Pandora glared as she handed over her medallion, “One wrong move-“

“Yes, yes, I am very aware of your opinions of me, Keeper of Hope.” Clockwork held a hand to Frostbite, “Shall I take you back to your people?”

“Er, yes.”

“Good, then-“

“Hey! I was not finished-“

“TIME OUT!”

Pandora sighed as they disappeared, “Ugh. He is always such a petty menace. One of these days…”
