Persephone And Hades - Tumblr Posts
“It's an old tale from way back when
And we're gonna sing it again and again
We're gonna sing, we're gonna sing…
…We’re gonna sing it again.”
Hadestown is told through the practice of Oral Tradition. It is sung to an audience, and despite it being a sad song, we continue to sing this song. Inspiring others to have it told to them.
I’ve always loved songs/stories that end the way it begins. Hadestown does this effortlessly. But what really butters my bread is this idea of what this means in terms of the various actors.
It’s common knowledge that every person adds their own twist to a character their acting. Who we are blends into the characters we play.
So with the various actors who play Orpheus, Hades, Persephone, Eurydice, Hermes, the Fates, and the Workers, something is added to the story.
Myths oftentimes change. Things get forgotten and replaced. But the core of the story always stays the same. It’s how cultures have different versions of the same stories.
Singing the song of Hadestown “again and again,” allows for this exchange of things being added and forgotten with every new actor.
This is just a thought vomit on Hadestown and the correlation of Oral Traditions and how this leads to a bigger impact with every listen and new actor.
Charon: Just take a deep breath!
Hades, having not seen Persephone for a day: TAKE A DEEP BREATH?! IT FEELS LIKE MY INSIDES ARE BEING RIPPED OUT!
Hades, seeing Persephone for the first time: Oh no
Charon: What is it? What happened?
Hades: I think I just felt an emotion.
Charon, dropping his oar: You've GOT to be kidding me

Hades, stroking Persephone’s head: You’re so tiny and adorable.
Persephone, half asleep: I could kick your ass right now.
Hades, looking at her with heart eyes: I know.
Hades: [accidentally brushes Persephone’s hand with his own]
Persephone: [agressivelly holds his hand]
Persephone: Fucking commit to it.
Hades: I don’t know if you noticed but I slipped a little note in your lunch to say how much I love you.
Persephone: Thank you, that’s very sweet but-
Persephone, holding up a 10 page letter: This is not a little note, Hades
Hera: So you've known Persephone for 12 hours, what have you discovered?
Hades: People fall in love with her very easily
Hera: ... an example?
Hades, holding back tears: Me
I’m not sure whether I should laugh or cry.
Is OP aware that oh so many books exist on this subject?
And that almost universally the ones authored by people with doctorates in classicism and mythology disagree with OP?
Including the… epic hymn that first told this story? You know what’s in that original source material… right?
Abducted, yes. Demeter mourned? Definitely. Rape, no.
So here’s some info on Ancient Greek wedding traditions which (oh my stars and garters!!) included abducting the bride. With the father’s permission, which Hades got before he took her away.
Here’s a whole book on the subject of Ancient Greek wedding custom and its conflation with funeral rites. (Which sounds a bit like Hades and Persephone to anyone who’s ever dabbled in things like explication and context)
Here’s a link to another book that talks about Persephone’s rise to power as a result of her willingly eating the pomegranate seeds.
Oh shit!!
Here’s a whole bunch of myths and hymns that talk about her Queen of the Underworld badassery!!
Holy pug tacos Batman!!
Here’s another book about the myth focusing on the seasonal religious and liminal rites. WHICH TAKE PLACE IN THE DRY SUMMER (not the fucking winter), which you know if you read a book.Way to go, OP!
All these fucking books! What could anyone possibly do with them all?!?!?!?! Do you eat books to absorb their powers instead of read them?
A better guess would be that you got into a moral panic over the name of a certain Renaissance statue and maybe after reading three pages of Edith Hamilton or the first paragraph of a Wikipedia article. And then used that to castigate and demean not only the people who actually take their limited time to create gorgeous art but also to denigrate modern day worshippers of Persephone and Hades?
Maybe next time, you stringy piece of over-boiled okra, you might want to take your own advice and pick up a book, instead of reducing the feared and respected Queen of the Underworld who held power equal to or in many interpretations GREATER than her husband into a meaningless pastiche of female disenfranchisement that you seemingly plucked from your own ass.
The tragedy of love a god is only if he loves you back.
It is a tragedy, Hades? x
crush
I have the biggest crush on hades 🥺 how caring he is with persephone and how he’s so gentle makes my heart melt. I love how slow they take things but we can see how deeply they care for each other
Yeah I love the version where she went down intentionally but that really isn't a popular version. I tried to research that storyline once and it took ages to find something. It's way more popular to say she got dragged down and wasn't allowed to leave because she ate the pomegranate seeds.
And you barely ever hear the "her name was Kore first", I only knew that because I did loads of research and even then it only came up like once. That isn't really common knowledge.
I think that version is fine and sure that's sweet but most of the time it's not that story. People still love the kidnapping version and that's what I have issues with
I also have strong thoughts on the Medusa and Hera stories but that's not really a part of it. I'm just thinking of when people soley focus on Hades and Persephone's "love story" and claim that Hades is the nicest god and stuff like that
Ngl I wish Persephone and Hades wasn't romanticized as much. He kidnapped her and forced her to stay with him. And I know dark romance is popular but it's the way people act as if it's a healthy, wholesome relationship. And Persephone's mother gets demonized for wanting to save her daughter? From her crazy relative that kidnapped her daughter?
There are loads of cool goth powerful couples and I don't get why people have chosen that story as the one to hype up. Like to the point where whenever someone makes an au, if their relationship isn't happy it gets so much hate. When the original story isn't happy anyway?
When you think of Persephone you think of the lost girl who was tricked by the lord of the underworld. You don't think of the girl who knew what the pomegranate was for but ate it anyway The girl with lust in her eyes and a freedom in her soul The girl trapped by the expectation of her heritage She could stay but she knew her mother would burn the world down in order to bring her back So she rose from a throne of bones and death and returned life to the world 6 long months spend in the sun dreaming of the dark and the cold beneath the earth taking it's life force with her. Dreaming of him and the night spent whispering everything and nothing to each other on the banks of the river styx's Collecting souls like she once collected flowers in full bloom.
