I’ll go first. My school likes to have cameras on but usually it takes a bit of persuading, so as usual my physics teacher asked us to turn our cameras on. I have a habit of taking to myself and since I wasn’t close enough to the scream I sarcastically remarked “not now I’m getting paper”. To my confusion my teacher then repeated, “oh it looks like Sarah’s getting paper”. I looked at my screen confused and realised that my mic had not automatically turned off when I joined the call.
Could have been worse but still embarrassing.

Gelsenkirchen: Zoom Erlebniswelt

Einen Tiergarten hatte die Stadt schon vor 130 Jahren. 1889 entschloss sich Karl Cofflet, sein Grundstück in Gelsenkirchen in einen Tiergarten zu verwandeln.
Er eröffnete 1889 eine Gastwirtschaft und nutzte die Einnahmen dafür, nach und nach den Besuchern auch recht Exotisches wie Mungos, Schweinsaffen oder Schlangen näher zu bringen.
Vor 70 Jahren öffnete dann der Ruhr Zoo am Rhein-Herne-Kanal in der Grünanlage Bismarckhain, der Grünfläche südlich des Rhein-Herne-Kanals, die lokale Zoo-Geschichte schrieb.
Rund 20 Mio. Gäste besuchten in den ersten 40 Jahren den Ruhr Zoo und bestaunten manche Neuerung: 1952 wurde das Menschenaffenhaus eröffnet, die ersten Orang Utans zogen ein.
Die Tiere vegetierten in zu meist viel zu kleinen und wenig naturnah gestalteten Käfigen vor sich hin. Beton und Stahl waren die meist genutzten Baumittel. Die Wildkatzen „tigerten“ im wahrsten Sinne in ihrem Käfigen hin und her und waren dabei immer den Blicken der Besucher ausgesetzt.
Die Elefanten hatten ebenfalls ein minimalistisch zu nennendes Areal und standen oftmals lange Zeit an der gleichen Stelle, verlegten ihr Gewicht von einem aufs andere Bein und schwengten den Kopf samt Rüssel von einer zur anderen Seite.
Mit den Jahren wurde der Ruhr Zoo immer weniger zeitgemäß und attraktiv. Mit dem Ausbleiben der Besucher wurden aber auch die Probleme immer größer. 1987 wurde dann der Zoo-Förderverein gegründet.
Der frühere Ruhr-Zoo wurde im vergangenen Jahrzehnt völlig erneuert (mehr oder weniger dem Erdboden gleich gemacht) und in „Zoom Erlebniswelt“ umbenannt.
Heute bietet die Zoom Erlebniswelt auf einer Fläche von über 30 Hektar mehr als 800 Tiere und 23 Tierarten. Die Erlebniswelt ist in drei Themenbereiche gegliedert: Alaska, Afrika und Asien.
Am Eingang entstand der Grimberger Hof mit Biergarten, Streichelzoo, Kletterspielplatz und seltenen deutschen Haustieren wie Husumer Protestschwein oder Hinterwälder Rind.
Alaska gibt einen Einblick in die verschiedenen Vegetationszonen Nordamerikas: der 1,3 Kilometer lange Rundweg führt uns von den Küstenregenwäldern über die Tundra und die felsige Berglandschaft bis zur Polarregion.
Mindestens genauso spannend ist die verlassene Mine direkt gegenüber des Bärengeheges. Hier müssen wohl einst die Goldgräber nach ihrem Glück gegraben haben.
Die Landschaften und Gehege sind perfekt zum Thema gestaltet und warten mit vielen kleinen Details auf. Wir spazieren wie Abenteurer zwischen Felsen und Flüssen. Wasserfälle mit abenteuerlichen Hängebrücken bilden ein spektakuläres Szenario für die Bären und für uns zum Anschauen.
Besonderheiten hier sind unter anderem der Unterwasserglastunnel im Becken der Kalifornischen Seelöwen und die 3.000 m² große Bärenanlage, die Eis-, Kamtschatka- und Kodiakbären zeigt.
Die Safari durch Afrika führt uns auf einer Weglänge von insgesamt 1,8 Kilometern als nächstes an den Löwen vorbei. Die haben es sich jedoch ganz gemütlich gemacht und dösen gut getarnt in ihrem Gehege.
Afrika zeigt ein Dorf mit Haustierrassen, Savannenlandschaft und den Regenwald. Eine Bootsfahrt führt um den Pavianfelsen und an den Landschaftsgehegen entlang.
Die ausgedehnte Savanne mit Zebras, verschiedenen Gazellen und Antilopen schien endlos zu sein. Dieser Eindruck wird dadurch unterstützt, dass sie sich an einem leichten Hang entlang zieht, so dass die jenseitige Begrenzung nicht so schnell sichtbar ist.
Außerdem gibt es ein Insel auf der man mitten durch das Gehege einer Lemuren-Gruppe geht, völlig ohne Abzäunung. Falls einem dies nicht zusagt, kann man alternativ auch den Weg um das Gehege herum wählen.
Asien ist der jüngste Bereich mit Dschungel, Orang Utans und vielen asiatischen Kleintieren. Ein 1.300 Meter langer Spazierweg, teilweise auch in 5 Metern Höhe, schlängelt sich durch den Dschungel. Ergänzend gibt es einen Indoor-Spielplatz und einen Gastronomiebereich, der auch abendliche Öffnungszeiten bietet.
Die Gastronomie hebt sich trotz themenbezogener Namensgebung, beispielsweise Afrika Lodge oder Alaska Diner, nicht vom üblichen Durchschnittsangebot ab.

The city of Gelsenkirchen already had zoological garden 130 years ago. In 1889 Karl Cofflet decided to turn his property in Gelsenkirchen into an animal park.
He opened a tavern in 1889 and used the proceeds to gradually introduce the visitors to exotic animals as well as mongooses, macaque monkeys or some snakes.
70 years ago, the Ruhr Zoo opened then in the green area of Bismarckhain, the green area south of the Rhein-Herne-Channel, which wrote local zoo history.
Around 20 million guests visited the Ruhr Zoo in the first 40 years and admired many innovations: in 1952, the Great Ape House was opened, and the first orangutans moved in.
The animals vegetated in much too small and not very natural designed cages to themselves. Concrete and steel were the most used building materials. The wild cats paced back and forth in their cages, always facing the gaze of the visitors.
The elephants also only had a minimalist area and often stood in the same place for a long time, shifting their weight from one leg to the other and swinging their heads and their trunk from one side to the other.
Over the years, the Ruhr Zoo became less and less contemporary and less attractive. With the absence of visitors but also the problems were getting bigger. In 1987, the Zoo Foundation Association was founded.
The former Ruhr Zoo was completely renovated in the past decade (more or less razed to the ground) and renamed "Zoom Erlebniswelt" (Zoom adventure world).
Today, the Zoom Erlebniswelt offers more than 800 animals and 23 species of animals over an area of more than 30 hectares. The zoom world is divided into three thematic areas: Alaska, Africa and Asia.
At the entrance arised the "Grimberger Hof" with beer garden, petting zoo, climbing playground and rare German livestock such as Danish Protest Pig or the Hinterwald Cattle.
Alaska gives you an insight into the different vegetation zones of North America: the 1.3 kilometer circular trail leads us from the coastal rainforests over the tundra and the rocky mountain landscape to the polar region.
At least as exciting is the abandoned mine directly opposite the bear enclosure. Once upon a time, the gold diggers must have dug for their luck here.
The landscapes and enclosures are perfectly designed to the theme and come up with many small details. We walk like adventurers between rocks and rivers. Waterfalls with adventurous suspension bridges doing a spectacular scenario for the bears and for us to watch.
Special features here include the underwater glass tunnel in the basin of the California Sea Lions and the 3,000 m² bear complex that shows Polar, Kamchatka and Kodiak bears.
The safari through Africa takes us, next to the lions first, over a total distance of 1.8 kilometers. However, they have made themselves quite comfortable and doze well camouflaged in their enclosure.
Africa shows a village with domestic breeds, savanna scenery and the rainforest. A boat trip leads around the baboon rocks and along the different landscape enclosures.
The vast savanna with zebras, various gazelles and antelopes seemed endless. This impression is supported by the fact that it pulls along a slight slope, so that the otherworldly boundary isn´t visible to fast.
There is also an island where you walk through the enclosure of a group of lemurs, completely fenced off. If you do not like it, you can alternatively choose the path around the enclosure.
Asia is the youngest area with jungles, orangutans and many small Asian animals. A 1,300-meter-long promenade, sometimes even 5 meters in the height, meanders through the jungle. In addition, there is an indoor playground and a food court, which also served evening hours.
The gastronomy doesn´t stands out despite thematic naming, for example Africa Lodge or Alaska Diner, from the usual average offer.

Try this virtual Halloween scavenger hunt to deal with Covid-19 social distancing. If you have kids or grandkids this is a fun activity. By now everyone is on Zoom so why not be a bit creative and invite other kids to a Zoom scavenger hunt? Get the kids to dress up and invite a group to a zoom session. Explain the game to them first. Get them ready. Explain when an item is read out by an adult, they have look in the house for the item and quickly bring it the screen. Who ever gets an item first gets a treat by their parents. Talk to the other parents and coordinate. Afterwards you could act out a ghost story. You can go creative with the props like sound effects and lighting. Adults can play this game too. It’s time to bring out the kid in all of us.
