summary: 3.9k words — joining the survey corps was a stupid move, you knew it. you only joined the cadet corps for the sake of escaping a broken household. you were going to choose the garrison regiment until a certain someone — grumpy and unbothered — catches your eye.

notes: so i’m new, lmao. and this is my first piece. a small oneshot (or a sneak peak, depending on whether i feel like making this a fic or not) of something completely stupid, lol. enjoy? this is completely satire btw-

tw: nothing explicit, just a small detail about sexual intercourse

i do not own any of the characters of aot, i only own the character of y/n. the other characters belong to hajime isayama.

he sighed.

this man, this blonde and demonic man actually sighed when you were defending him with your entire being. your heart, body, mind, and soul. did he not want that? to tell that nile dok guy that the bro code exists?

so why was he sitting in front of you with his fingers pressing onto the bridge of his nose, brows furrowed and eyes closed. what did you do wrong? you expressed everything you knew he felt but was too kind to say. this bushy eyebrowed man should be thankful. he should be grateful.

yes, the fact that nile dok (commander erwin's previous friend) had a life with the woman that he loved was none of your business.. but you still thought it was a good idea letting that absolute dick know the second thing he did wrong - the first being joining the military police.

behind you, you could hear section commander hange snickering behind her hands. no, this was not funny. this was a serious matter that poor commander erwin could not solve... but that was okay. you could solve it for him so that he could lead his new recruits to a suicide mission (his expeditions) without the extra stress that nile dok had caused many years back.

arms folded over your chest, you raised a brow at the exhausted man sitting in front of you. the audacity of this man, to sit there looking exhausted at not just anyone, but you.

"what have i said about this?" he said, so lowly, you might have missed it if you weren't so focused on eyeing him with a look that said be-grateful-i-exist. the commander's head was now raised, his hands were clasped tightly in front of him, and he looked as though he had aged ten times faster in one sitting.

what?

why is he more stressed with this?

i helped him.

"i'm over it."

you snapped.

"see, that's where i know you're lying, because if you were really over it, you wouldn't have told me the story to begin with," you argued matter-of-factly. "like, i'm just a random member of the training corps. we haven't even graduated yet."

"i only told you," began the commander, "because you were pestering me about it."

"and something inside that big brain of yours told you that you should tell this random cadet about your sad life story."

you smiled at him, feeling pleased with yourself. there were many times you had rendered many people speechless, so why was the commander looking surprised at your response?

"i did not expect you to have the courage to then interrogate commander nile dok about our past," said commander erwin, side eyeing hange. "you are not helping, hange."

"i apologise, erwin," whispered hange, a small snort slipping out.

"no, don't apologise section commander," you intervened swiftly, turning to look at the woman whose laughter merely increased. you turned back to the commander quickly. "right now, i could be training with my classmates. but no, i'm stuck here giving you a lecture on why you should pursue that woman —"

"actually, i think that you'll find that i'm the one giving you the lecture —"

"which you clearly failed, seeing as you're just sitting there sighing and smacking your forehead like this." you proceeded to demonstrate (with a little exaggeration) the way he kept face palming.

that was it for the section commander. she absolutely exploded with laughter, her glasses slipping down her nose. commander erwin sat up straighter, eyeing hange with as much seriousness as needed when going on an expedition.

"hange — out —"

"no!" started hange, saluting with so much speed, you were surprised she didn't falter when she stood up straighter. "no, i'll be quiet! i promise!"

"right now, as we speak, he could be inserting his member in her —"

"right that's quite enough, cadet."

"see, you won't even let me finish!"

"because this is getting too rowdy —"

"you could be getting rowdy with her right now, but —"

"enough!"

you did not even flinch when one of his hands came in contact with his desk. you raised a brow at him. he didn't even look angry.

"see, if you keep slamming your arm like that, one day you're gonna lose it, so be careful. what's her name — marie? — she won't want you if you've only got one arm —"

"right, this doesn't seem to be working," sighed commander erwin, rubbing his face as hange (once again) began howling with laughter. she didn't even bother apologising this time.

"i'm glad we're on the same page," you grumbled.

"yes."

"you just don't seem to understand!"

"we aren't on the same page, then," said the commander, shaking his head slowly. for just a little while, there was a comfortable silence that consumed you all. all that could be heard was hange's quiet snickering, which seemed to irk the commander to some extent, because he leaned back in his chair and extended his arm to pull out a sheet, presenting it to you.

"oh, is that the letter you wrote for her? are you finally going to show it to me?"

commander erwin shook his head. "i think you'll find that i cannot trust you to keep this to yourself."

"so.. you're saying that it's not the letter?"

he nodded. you deflated, irritated.

"well you could have just said that instead of trying to guilt trip me! you thought you did something there, didn't you?"

the commander looked over your shoulder and made eye contact with hange.

"can you believe that this woman is twenty years old?"

you clenched your jaw, eyes narrowed. i'm right in front of you.

"you're asking the same woman who was laughing at all this!" you argued, moving your head in the way of his line of sight.

you turned around, raising your eyebrows at hange, who shrugged.

"she's got a point, erwin."

"this letter," commander erwin continued, as if he hadn't heard her at all; you faced him once more, "is a report of what you've done and said that has made commander nile dok request that i sit and have a chat with you."

you opened your mouth to say something. something smart, perhaps, but was silenced immediately when commander erwin raised his hand to halt whatever witty thing you were planning on coming up with. you frowned, but nodded your head, urging him to continue.

"i won't read all of it out. you do, however, need to understand just how serious the things you've said are."

you nodded again. what you said wasn't too bad, you didn't have much to worry about.

"'she has, on numerous occasions, made disrespectful statements regarding my personal life (...) making multiple unacceptable and inappropriate statements, most notably: 'your children were mistakes!'."

"you what?" gasped hange, a loud smack indicating that she had slapped her hand over her mouth in surprise.

"that's not true!" you argued quickly, hands gripping on to the arms of the chair you were sitting in.

the commander raised a bushy brow, as if to say 'tell your side'. you shifted in your seat, making yourself more comfortable. the wood beneath you was only just flattening your bottom, which was a disappointment, really and truly.

"i said that his kids should have been yours," you told him with pride.

if you rendered the commander speechless before, then now he was practically mute. the grip on the sheet of paper had tightened notably, the furrowing of his brows had completely stopped, and his mouth was no longer pressed in a thin line, instead left agape in... astonishment?

i know he's secretly impressed, you thought to yourself.

he did not say a word after that, choosing instead to stare at you. he wasn't even angry (well of course he wasn't, you did the right thing) but if you remembered correctly, nile dok was, opting to show you his entire dictionary of colourful vocabulary.

"may i.. be.. e-excused?" you heard hange choke out from behind you. she didn't even wait for an answer before she left the room, the satisfying click of the door filling the silence in his office.

that silence did not last long anyway. hange's laughter echoed around the corridors, but you didn't understand what was funny. you were dead serious and you would fight for poor commander erwin smith, who lost his loved one to his best friend.

he cleared his throat, looking grave.

"i'm sure you understand how what you really said was far worse than what was written, then?"

"by 'worse' do you mean impressive?"

"no."

"then what?"

"i mean worse. you can get into serious trouble for this."

"hey, i thought you scouts were all about freedom?" you protested sharply. "well this is my freedom. freedom of speech, i can't get in trouble for that."

"against the commander of the military police brigade?"

"oh don't act like you're all best friends," you spoke, narrowing your eyes. "everyone knows the scouts and the mp's have beef."

"beef?"

"you guys want to fight and you know it," you clarified, "and you have me for that, and personally, i think we're winning. you know what could help us really grab that trophy?"

"we're not competing for a troph—"

"you and marie, power couple!"

"cadet l/n," the commander voiced firmly, "i urge you to drop the thought at once. the scouts aren't competing for a trophy that you think the mp's might already have. and you are not a scout either."

"exactly. you're literally getting inside info from me, do you realise what type of an advantage that is?"

"i was under the assumption that you wanted to join the garrison regiment," said commander erwin fondly. this seemed to be the only time he had conveyed any form of emotion during this entire conversation. "dot pyxis is a dear friend of mine."

"i do want to join them," you announced clearly, "and it's because commander dot pyxis is your friend that the garrisons are also secretly on your side... they're just not part of the drama."

"moving on," continued commander erwin, completely ignoring your statement.

you didn't even feel disappointed at that. the fact that commander erwin, an actual devil in disguise, could not find a way to argue against your points meant that you had a good explanation that nobody could debunk.

"'mp's are all fat pigs who sit on their asses all day, abusing their power, i say we behead them'."

"why's the old man offended about that?"

"you're aware that you said this to the commander of the military police brigade?"

"it's because it was the commander of the military police brigade that i said it anyway," you revealed calmly.

commander erwin sighed once more. you started.

"oh come on! don't tell me none of your scouts have ever spoken about him like that!"

at that, commander erwin turned his head, now finding the dust on the floor particularly interesting. you found your lips curling with amusement. you were right, again. no surprise there.

"this has nothing to do with you and your history with him. i hardly think that should count, and seeing as you've made it clear that your scouts talk this way, too —"

"they talk this way," agreed commander erwin, finally finding enough courage in him to look you in the eye head on, "but not to nile dok."

"are you saying that if they came face to face with him, they wouldn't?"

again, commander erwin seemed to have no response to this. well that answered your question perfectly. the urge to grin again was coming back, you did not even try repressing it this time.

"'maria deserves poor commander erwin, not you'. when i informed her that her name was marie, not maria, she proceeded to say 'why's she copying wall maria for? she thought she did something, huh?'."

commander erwin looked up at you with contained annoyance.

"you're not telling me i'm wrong for that?" you asked incredulously.

"i wouldn't have mentioned it if you were right."

"see, if you had just pursued her, then maybe i wouldn't be sitting here with you angry at me in the first place," you told him seriously.

"this entire situation has been completely forgotten for years, cadet."

"well clearly not if he's still salty about it."

"you provoked him, l/n," said commander erwin calmly.

"he provoked me!"

"how so?" he asked, as if you were talking over a nice cup of tea.

"anyone that breaks the bro code is a bastard —"

"which brings me to my next point," interrupted the commander, looking down at the sheet with a calculating gaze. "'you even look like someone who would break the bro code. don't know why, your nose is all crooked, how did she go for you? oh no, don't tell me your kids inherited your genes!'."

"another reason as to why his kids should have been yours, sir."

the commander was beginning to look as though he needed to sleep. you couldn't blame him. nile dok really is a backstabber.

"you do realise that i never told marie how i felt?"

"but he knew, right? he knew you and her —"

"it's all in the past. i harbour no hard feelings."

"respectfully, i find that really hard to believe, sir."

"commander nile is impressed with your skill, you know? he thinks you've done exceptionally well in your training," commander erwin informed you.

you scoffed. "is that supposed to make me stop interrogating that man?"

"yes."

"tough."

"look at the way he started the letter, cadet. 'y/n has displayed exceptional skills, most notably in hand-to-hand combat, and ranking tenth among the 104th training corps'."

"wait, wait," you interrupted, a hand extended in a hurry, "how does he know that? he looked in to it, you mean to say? that man was sticking his nose in places where it shouldn't be!"

"reminds me of someone, although i can't seem to put my finger on who it was, exactly," mused commander erwin, looking almost... amused?

"well it's not about whoever that dingbat is," you dismissed airily. "this is about me."

"i'm well aware," nodded commander erwin. "don't you see? he still appreciates how you made it into the top ten. in my personal opinion, i think if you tried harder, you could have jumped yourself up a few numbers."

"yeah, i know. i just did it for fun, really. i just wanted to take the spot of someone who might want to be an mp in the future. we don't need more of them anyway," you confirmed, slipping in a sly wink (one that you could not exactly do correctly — it came out as more of a hard blink).

the commander continued, clearing his throat.

"'however, after careful consideration, i have concluded that i will not be allowing her to join the mp's due to her irresponsible and utterly imprudent behaviour, irrespective of how skilled she is as a cadet'."

"what?" you exclaimed, leaning forward in your seat, eyes wide.

commander erwin merely raised his brows at you, a look of confusion flashing across his features for less than a millisecond. you might have just imagined it was there to begin with.

"'this is why i will therefore not be accepting her joining the mps, regardless of her exceptional skills, due to her irresponsible, unpredictable, reckless and impolitic nature, should she decide she wants to join our regiment'."

"that's not fair!" you argued, your voice rising. "that means i got into the top ten for nothing! i just wasted all that training just to be rejected by the mp's even though those who make it there are promised to choose between the three branches! three!"

commander erwin placed the sheet flat on his desk before tilting his head to the side. this time, you could definitely read every bit of confusion painted creatively over his face.

"am i wrong in assuming that the garrison regiment was your choice since you first joined the training corps?"

"no," you answered truthfully. a pause. then, "but how did you know that?"

"each branch visits the training corps to encourage the cadets to join their regiment, the faction selection part, as i'm sure you're familiar with. the 104th's one is next, in a year. when i was visiting for the 101st, i came across a wild cadet who seemed to be getting an earful from keith shadis."

"yeah? who?" you asked eagerly.

it was always funny seeing someone else get into trouble for a change. seeing as it was always you, it made a nice form of entertainment to see someone else in your shoes, as sick as that might sound.

"a young female, very energetic and incredibly skilled, who unfortunately has been banned from the military police brigade for her... confidence."

you pulled your chair in with excitement.

"some other girl got banned? i have to meet her then, maybe we could rise up against the mp's!"

"oh you know her very well. she's sitting in your seat right now."

"don't be sil—"

you froze.

but you didn't feel embarrassed. you never feel embarrassed.

you looked up, frowning.

"you saw me get into trouble before even properly meeting me?" you scowled, realising your first impression wasn't the way you wanted it to be.

"you boasted about joining the garrisons from the beginning," said commander erwin fondly. "so i'm confused as to why you seem annoyed at being rejected by the mp's. you were never going to join them to begin with."

"your point?"

"you said you made it to the top ten to prevent one more military police member. so why do you feel it is wrong to ban you from joining their regiment if you were not going there anyway?"

"because," you stated.

commander erwin raised a brow.

"because?" he repeated.

"because," you stated once more. "that's my answer."

the commander looked as though he wanted to jump off the wall and land caught between a titan's top and bottom rows of teeth.

"as if i'd ever want to join the mp's anyway, stupid man's making dumb judgements again! imagine his kids end up as stupid as him —"

the commander cleared his throat.

"it's a real shame, cadet. the report demonstrates that you're strong and highly skilled, however it's this that undermines all of that."

"what do you mean 'this'?"

"your behaviour."

"what behaviour? it's perfect."

he sighed, face palmed, and rubbed his nose, just like he did when the conversation began. you copied him and ignored the way he raised a brow at you. you stopped when you got caught, looking up and finding interest in a loose cobweb at the corner of the room.

"i apologise for this," the commander started, tucking away the sheet in his drawer, "but i do have to inform keith shadis about you."

you groaned, deflating in your seat.

"but i defended you, commander."

"i did not need it."

"you so did. i said everything you were afraid of getting off your chest," you explained. "don't worry sir, even though you're reprimanding me, i'll always be on your side. i'll always defend you."

"please do not."

"suddenly i'm hearing other things."

"it seems it has been like that for the entirety of this conversation," commander erwin said, and you chuckled quietly to yourself. "i don't want another report about you again, understood? dismissed, cadet."

"of course, erwin," you said, standing up and saluting.

"commander erwin."

"aw, man. not on a first name basis?"

"cadet."

"fine, fine, i'm leaving," you replied, bored.

waving merrily, you walked over to the double doors, turning the knob and exiting without trouble. the knob felt cool against your palm, and you relished in the feeling before being met with the face of section commander hange, who was beaming from ear to ear.

"i like you," she stated.

"i like me too."

"don't let erwin know," she began, lowering her voice significantly, "but i'm on your side for this."

you nodded, feeling elated that at least someone understood where you were coming from. it would feel much better if the person you were fighting for understood, too. whatever, he'll come around sooner or later, you could feel it.

"levi!" hange screamed, turning on the spot and waving with much more energy than you had done with erwin.

levi?

as in captain levi?

i thought he was an old man.

your questions were answered when hange pulled you in by your shoulders, pointing at the man making his way down the empty corridor.

levi was unusual, you decided, but wow..

levi had dark hair, darker than night itself, styled in a way that had it falling over his face, and if you looked closely, you could see the shaved part beneath it. levi was not like hange, yourself, or (even) commander erwin. levi was scowling in your direction. either he was pissed at hange, or he just had a natural resting bitch face. though his eyes were half lidded, you could still admire the way the pool of grey in them were so elegant yet exciting, sparkling with something that you couldn't quite figure out. his eyes were, in short, gorgeous.

something else that was short was himself, really. levi wasn't at all that tall. in fact, as he came closer and closer, you could see that levi was rather shorter than many of the male cadets you trained with.

but his sharp features made up for that anyway, especially his jawline, sharp enough to slice the nape of a titan's neck itself.

levi, it seemed, was just naturally grumpy; you figured this out when hange began enthusiastically speaking to him.

oh.. and levi, it seemed, was incredibly good looking.

but levi, it seemed, was part of the scout regiment (as shown with the cape he was wearing).

and god, levi, it seemed, would be the reason you foolishly decide that yes, commander erwin being your actual commander would be fitting.

it was at that very moment, did you realise, that once the faction selection part comes in, you'll be picking the scout regiment.

.ăƒ»ă€‚.ăƒ»ă‚œâœăƒ».ăƒ»âœ«ăƒ»ă‚œăƒ»ă€‚. .ăƒ»ă€‚.ăƒ»ă‚œâœăƒ».・

"you're hiding something, aren't you?" said hange, looking up at erwin with a grin.

hange was too perceptive for her own good. this was something that he wanted to hide, to never show anyone, but of course, how could somebody like hange miss something like this? she couldn't.

erwin rubbed the bridge of his nose for the nth time that day, looking left and right (the corridors were empty) before pulling out the report sheet his ex-friend had written for him.

he read aloud:

"(...) as such, i have come to the rightful conclusion that cadet l/n may need to seek urgent help as her behaviour has been noted by other cadets as 'unusual' or 'weird'. based on her many interactions with me, it would appear that the fellow cadets may be correct’."

hange repressed a snort, and he didn't even have the energy to lecture her about it.

"and you know what the worse part about this is?"

"what?"

"he might be right."

.ăƒ»ă€‚.ăƒ»ă‚œâœăƒ».ăƒ»âœ«ăƒ»ă‚œăƒ»ă€‚. .ăƒ»ă€‚.ăƒ»ă‚œâœăƒ».・

[1] Expendable Hearts (Levi X F!Reader)

“It’s always my pleasure, Mr. Brown.”

The corporate smile on your face drops as soon as you hit the end button in the video call application on your laptop. It was the first meeting of the day with a client and you were already exhausted, wanting nothing but to go home and curl up in bed, heavily surrounded by your pillows and weighted blanket for hours. But you know that’s a dream that would remain a fantasy for a while. Why? Because it’s a Monday. It’s only the start of the week and judging from the pile of paperwork delivered to your desk this morning, you would have to work overtime again for the third week in a row.

Being recently hired by one of the top leading firms in the country is a blessing you will be thankful for every day but as the week goes by and you’re on your fifth pile of paperwork, more than ten meetings in one week, you can’t help but think what would it be like to work for a small, quiet firm. You shrug those thoughts away as soon as they come. You’re grateful for the more-than-average salary the firm provides, at least.

The day went on as it always does: hours of you trying to ignore your back pain. It was becoming unbearable and you can’t even use the ointments your grandmother used to insist you use because it would no doubt infest the building with its smell—your reputation and first impression from your coworkers is at stake.

As you’re typing back an email from your superior, Atty. Dot Pixis, you halt when you feel the buzzing on your table. You pick it up mindlessly, checking to see the notification. A smile spreads on your face to see that it’s your previous boss, Vanessa.

hey. how’s working with the big leagues?? pixis is not tiring you out too much is he?? i can give him a word if you want.

pixis is treating me really well, nes. thank u for checking up on me! i miss everyone there at the firm and little ian :((

Vanessa, besides being your former boss back in Olsen & Associates, is also your friend and self-proclaimed older sister. She's a well-known attorney, and Olsen is a legend back in law school because she’s an alumnus who’s actually cool and doesn’t have their head up their asses. However, after deciding to settle down and start a family, she opened up a small firm in her hometown.

i might just have to visit bc i miss my little sis :(( should’ve never let u leave

technically, it’s your fault i left

i know :( don't remind me

Two months ago, Vanessa told you that ODM is hiring and Pixis contacted her to see if she knows anyone to take the job. Your jaw dropped to the ground when she told you she recommended you and you can send in your resume if you’re interested. It was an offer no one could pass up so before you knew it, you were being hauled into a hours-long bus ride and then anxiously seated for an interview in the city you used to live in. And after about a week of being a nervous wreck waiting for their response, you were contacted that you’ve been selected for the position.

Now here you are, finally settled in your office. You still can’t believe you have your own space in this huge building. You would’ve never thought you’d be working here in the firm you only used to stare at in awe while passing by years ago.

Although, you have to admit that you miss the warm feeling of the small firm where you all know each other, exchange heartfelt greetings, and gossip when there are not too many clients. Now, you pass by a new face every now and then, most not even bothering to greet you or spare you a look. You can’t blame them. The work here is drastic.

By the time you left the office, it’s already dark and way past office hours. As you were driving home, you remembered you still needed a few supplies in your apartment. You haven’t exactly settled yourself in, prioritizing work more. God, you even still had a few boxes to unpack.

You stopped by a 24-hour supermarket that you spotted on your way to work this morning when you had to reroute because of the traffic. It was a little out of the way but it would do. It was still two hours before midnight, anyway.

As you drag your feet through the aisles and drop whatever you felt like you needed in the cart, unwanted memories come creeping in. The air in Paradis City is still the same. Even if a few buildings might have changed or some stores you used to frequent have closed down, it was still the same Paradis you knew—a buzzing city filled with dreams. The streets are never empty, famously congested by students from top universities or office workers.

When you got the offer for the job, you weighed out the pros and cons. There were only two cons you were able to determine:

You don’t want to leave Olsen & Associates and Vanessa’s hometown, Trost, and

You’d be going back to your hometown, the one you promised not to go back to.

The pros outweigh the cons, obviously. That weight being the thick fat salary you would be getting. Besides, Paradis is huge and has like three million residents. It’s not like you’d cross paths with him. And it’s been years. He probably forgot all about you anyway. You barely think about him. It was just a silly puppy-love relationship. No biggie.

Keep telling yourself that.

Shut up.

“That one’s better.”

A voice directed to you made you snap out of your thoughts. It made you painfully aware of how you had been staring at the two options of green tea in your hand for probably more than the normal minutes it takes one to decide. The tall brunette had on a face mask covering half his face, his hair parted in the middle, and he wore a simple light blue button-down and black slacks. He was about two feet away from you when he pointed at the tea canister in your right hand.

“Oh. Thanks,” you replied sheepishly. Desperate to run away from the embarrassment of zoning out in the middle of a public space, you take his advice and put down the canister on your left hand back to the shelf.

“You’re welcome. I see my friend drinking it all the time so it has to be good,” he nods and you see his cheeks prop up, probably sporting a smile beneath the mask. You smiled back and thanked him again.

“Can you grab that one for me?” He points at a sweet one, a flavor in contrast with the green tea you chose. It was on the shelf being blocked by your cart beside you. You quickly mutter an apology and reach for a can.

“My fiancĂ©e prefers her tea fruity,” he explains even if you didn’t ask, his ears tinted a bit red from his own statement. You immediately find it endearing. He seems very fond of his partner as he continues to babble about her. “Well actually, she prefers coffee with an unhealthy amount of espresso shots but I eventually persuaded her to drink tea once in a while.”

“Moby! I know we usually don’t get this brand but guess what? This has a free pink sponge!”

You freeze at the sound of that awfully loud and familiar cheerful voice heading towards you at a fast pace. You couldn’t turn your head. Your fingers unconsciously grip the can you’re holding harshly with wide eyes. Silently, you were wishing that the person just had the same voice as the crazed tall woman with glasses you used to know or the man beside you isn’t named ‘Moby.’ The former would hardly be the case because from the sound of the voice, the personality of being uncaring of the silent atmosphere of the supermarket, and the way she ran excitedly from your peripheral vision, you were sure that this person was your old friend Hange. For the latter, your last hope dies down as you see the stranger turn his head at the sound of his name and reply with a sigh.

“What the hell are you gonna do with a sponge, babe? We have lots of sponges.”

“Okay but imagine! We swap out Levi’s sponge with a pink one.”

“I don’t think Levi cares about the color as long as it cleans.”

The fight or flight response in you went crazy at the mention of the name you haven’t heard in years, heavily leaning on the former. You could just hand this guy named Moby’s tea and make a run for it. You doubt Hange would care while being heavily invested in her free pink sponge.

But why would you run? You only run when you’re scared or did something wrong. Which is it? It can't be the latter, right?

I did.

Oh? So you did. You’re scared, huh? That she’d get angry at you for what you did back then.

I am.

Run then. That’s all you know to do anyway.

Shut up. Leave me alone.

“Miss? Are you okay?”

For the second time in front of the same stranger, you were snapped out of your trance and find yourself gripping the can so hard that you think you’ve made a light dent on the can. Damn, you should really get a decent amount of sleep. You’ve been losing it a lot lately.

You shake your head and slap your cheek lightly with your free hand. “Sorry. Lack of sleep. I’m fine. Here.”

You turn to him and hand him the can, hoping he wouldn’t mind the barely noticeable dent you made. Purposely, you don’t stray your eyes away from the man. You don’t want to be the first person to acknowledge Hange. Maybe she doesn’t even remember you. Maybe she doesn’t even want to acknowledge you.

“Greenie?”

It was more of a mutter. But with how loud Hanji’s voice is, you and Moby clearly heard it.

That’s when you look at her and actually see her. She looks the same as you saw her last. Her brown hair was tied up in a ponytail and her brown eyes were covered by thick-rimmed glasses. Nothing much has changed from her appearance except for the disappearance of the youthful look now replaced by maturity. Her gaze is fixed on you, slack-jawed. Her reaction doesn’t surprise or faze you, having expected that much. It’s what would follow that you’re nervous about. What would she say? Will she get angry at you? Or will she even remember who you are? Somehow, you dread that last possible outcome worst.

“H-Hange,” you breathily let out. You wonder if it’s audible.

Her fiancĂ© also looks shocked, staring at you and then back to Hanji with widened eyes. “This is Greenie? The Greenie?” He points at you while asking Hange who was still frozen. His tone and reference to you immediately tell you that you have been discussed with people you never met, no doubt now knowing your past with them.

Greenie. You haven’t heard that nickname in a while.

It was silent for a few seconds, eyes not straying from each other. You probably look apologetic—scared, even. The man beside her is waiting too. You think he’s having a mini breakdown in disbelief.

When you see her start to lunge at you, you shut your eyes, expecting her palm to collide with your cheek. You expect her to slap you and scream at you in the middle of the cold supermarket. You expect her to ask you where you got the nerve to come back to the city after all you’ve done.

Instead, what she did broke down all your expectations.

Long and slender arms wrap around your figure, pulling you tightly to her chest. Your face is squished against the fabric of her fluffy parka jacket. Even if you suddenly have trouble breathing with how tight her hug is, you were thankful that it covered your face and how you were biting your lower lip, trying to suppress the relief that comes with tears.

“Where the hell have you been?!”

You couldn’t even answer. Or move at all. Not that you even know what to say.

“Hange. You’re killing her.” You hear her partner say. Hange instantly loosens her grip on you, muttering an apology with a slight chuckle. When she looks down at you, you give her a gentle smile.

“I missed you too, Hange.” And you meant it.

The tall woman was still not letting you go, arms wrapped just below your shoulders because of the height difference. Even if you were caged in her arms, you can still tilt your head up to look at her. Suddenly, tears started streaming down her face as she tilts her head down to you, her mouth quivering. Then it turns into full-on sobbing. You chuckle as she starts swaying you with her, going side to side like a pendulum as she sobs while wailing your name repeatedly.

There was no stopping Hange when she gets like this. So you let it happen. You let her hug you like she did many times before. You relish the moment, wanting to pass out and let loose in her hold. Maybe you’re dreaming and you’ll wake up in your bed, filled with disappointment and yearning for some warmth.

When she was satisfied, she let you go and introduced you to Moblit, her fiancĂ© and coworker. They walked with you as you continued to shop, telling you stories about her and Moblit. Thankfully for your sake, she didn’t ask you much about yourself or what happened when you were away. She just asked how you were doing right now and what you were doing in the city. Although you were scared that the news would get to him, you told her the truth that you recently got hired at the law firm.

“So you moved back then? Like permanently?” Her brows raised in excitement.

“Well, I have a temporary contract for six months before I’m permanently employed there so hopefully,” you shrug while heading to checkout. As expected, Hange doesn’t care that you practically explained that it’s technically a ‘not yet,’ she shrieks and jumps up and down anyway.

“Oh my god, this is perfect! Greenie, one of my bridesmaids had to back out but we already had the dress paid and it’s a no-refund. Can you step in for her and attend our wedding? Would you? Please? Please?” Hange begs you, hands clasped together as she stares at you with puppy eyes and a pout.

You stop in your tracks and feel your heart sink to the ground. She wants you to attend her wedding knowing that many, if not everyone, you used to know will be there. And if his name was so casually mentioned earlier, that meant that they were still very much best friends and he would definitely be there.

And a few minutes ago you were convincing yourself that you wouldn’t accidentally run into him in this city. Now, you have to actually see him and be in the same room for a few hours?

You start with a chuckle. “Oh. I wouldn’t mean to impose—”

You were abruptly overpowered by her loud negation. “No, you wouldn’t! Everyone would be ecstatic to see you! I swear.”

“But—“

Hange sighs dramatically, shoulders slumping with a pout on her face. “I guess it’d be too much, wouldn’t it? You’re probably busy, right? Right. Sorry, I just got excited.” She turns to her boyfriend. “Moby, can you pay for our stuff and Greenie’s too?”

“What?”

Your eyes widened but before you could protest or take a strong hold on your cart, Moblit was already dragging it away and sending a flying kiss to Hange who giggled like a schoolgirl to catch it with her fist. You turn to her in disbelief as he turns his back. She catches your face, knowing what you’re about to say.

“It’s fine. That won’t make a dent in his bank account.”

Just like that, you were painfully reminded how no one could get a word in with Hange.

[1] Expendable Hearts (Levi X F!Reader)

“Un-fucking-believeable.”

Niccolo, the training chef, flinched from behind him when the silver-eyed man let out an unprovoked profanity as he entered the restaurant. Connie, his loyal secretary, doesn’t even bat an eye at the unprofessional behavior of his boss, only following behind him with a straight face.

“Shithead. Call Nile later. Tell him I want a new team on this
” his words halt in disgust as he sees the unfinished, poorly done walls of what was to be a new branch of Kuchel’s. “or I’ll fire his stupid construction company out of every damn project. Verbatim.”

“Will do, sir.” Connie nods, mentally sighing. Not only is he used to hearing the profanities, but he’s also used to being ordered to say it too.

Levi nods at his secretary’s response, eager to leave the abomination that was supposed to be at 80% progress at this date. As he turns, he’s faced with Connie and a blonde man he doesn’t know.

“Who’s this?”

The blonde man practically shivered at his haze, the corner of his lips twitching at the sides. It was a sad attempt at a smile. Mentally, Connie sighed at his boss’ unfocused mind when there was something that greatly irritates him. The trainee chef was just literally in the car with them and Levi told Connie to bring the chef with them on the way to check the new location.

“This is Niccolo, sir. He was in the car with us. He’s the one highly considered by the HR,” Connie expertly answered.

“So you’re on the last stage,” Levi addresses Niccolo. The nervous man gulps but answers. “Yes, sir.”

Connie watches the exchange, feeling a bit of pity for the tall man cowering at the gaze of such a short guy with a temper taller than a skyscraper. He was exactly like this when Levi interviewed him for the position.

“Sorry, I had to make a detour because some shitheads can’t do their job right. Let’s go.”

And so Niccolo and Connie followed the grumpy man back to the vehicle they just got not even three minutes ago.

Not that he knew what to expect or had guesses but Niccolo was utterly surprised that he was brought to the first Kuchel’s restaurant. The legendary one that went viral.

When he passed by the reception area, his eyes widened when he saw the reservation list filled with no spots left. It was practically booked for the month from what he saw.

The kitchen smelled amazing, each one of the cooks was busy and they actually looked happy while working. They worked with so much coordination and laughter like he had never seen before.

He thought that he’d train or cook with them today, seeing as they’re Kuchel’s main branch’s team. He was excited too. But again, Levi surprises him when he pushes another door open from the kitchen, revealing a staircase. The man says nothing but climbs upstairs.

Confused but too scared to ask, Niccolo only stares at Connie but who beckons him to follow him up the stairs. When he sees Levi take a glance behind him, his feet move on its own, following the cold short man’s steps.

He sees a living room first. It’s a simple home but maintained well enough to look pristine. He kept on following Levi as he eventually led him to a kitchen. Levi turned to him and he’d be lying if he said that his heart didn’t jump at his sudden order.

“Do whatever you like. You have an hour.”

And then he leaves the kitchen, leaving Niccolo confused as he looks around at the domestic kitchen. He sees Connie, Levi’s assistant aggressively mouthing the words ‘cook anything’ as he follows Levi back to the living room.

[1] Expendable Hearts (Levi X F!Reader)

“Good job. I think he liked it.”

Connie whispers to Niccolo before he leaves. Normally, he isn’t allowed to tell the training chefs what Levi thinks. But he’s feeling a little silly and Niccolo is his friend and his best friend, Sasha’s, boyfriend.

Just like all the other training chefs, Levi brought Niccolo to his old home to cook something for him. Levi is hella picky with them but Connie could see that he actually liked his friend’s food. There was no pursing of lips, which was the worst of them all. Connie had to scramble and get the trainee out before he burst the room into a myriad of colorful words no one wants to hear.

When they got back to the office, Hange was already there and most probably uninvited.

“What the fuck are you doing here, four eyes?”

Levi’s eyes were seething with annoyance as he sees his friend sitting at his desk on his chair, spinning around like an idiot. It was hard to believe that this woman is a professor at one of the most prestigious universities in the country.

“Shorty! You’re here!” She exclaimed, slamming her hands down on the fine wood of Levi’s desk to stop the chair from spinning.

“Get the fuck up before I strangle you to death, Hange.”

Hange chuckles but stands up anyway, skipping before plopping herself on the couch in Levi’s office. “Can you relax? I was just here to remind you that I’m getting married.”

Levi groans and rolls his eyes. “Who would fucking forget, Hange? You text a fucking countdown at seven in the morning in the group chat tagged to everyone. The mute option has been fucking useless since you learned how to do it.”

Levi sits down on his chair and switches on his computer to return to work despite his friend’s unsolicited visit to his office.

“Oh! I wanted to ask you something too! Do you have a date for the wedding? So I can take note of a plus one, maybe?”

He gives a blank stare to his friend for a second before turning back to his screen. “You know you can ask me that through a phone call, right?” He began typing away on his laptop, answering a few emails Connie forwarded to him.

“Well, you blocked my number so I thought that you’d rather see me in person.” Hange shrugs with a grin.

Levi pauses, remembering that he did block Hange’s number that one night she insisted for he come over and watch a horror movie with Erwin and Moblit. He was working and couldn’t turn his phone on do not disturb mode so he had to specifically block Hange’s calls. He then proceeds to forget to unblock her until now.

“So, no date?” Hange presses further.

Levi grunts, annoyed at the stupid question. “Who the fuck am I gonna bring? It’s not like I’m gonna bring a random girl to your wedding, Hange.”

“You totally could. They’re called escorts,” Hange suggests like a know-it-all.

“I don’t want a random stranger in your wedding pictures, four eyes.”

“I would rather have that than see you so depressing in my pictures with your bitch face. Oh! Want me to set you up on a blind date?” Hange’s voice rises again, something that happens when she gets excited over an idea.

“Fuck no,” Levi spat.

“Your last serious relationship was decades ago, Levi. Give it a try again.”

If looks could kill, funeral flowers would be thrown at Hange’s casket instead of wedding flowers. His fingers hover over the keyboard, hanging frozen at her words. At the mere implication of you, his blood boils and his chest tightens.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Well–”

“Are you saying I’m not over her again, Hange?”

Before she could answer, the door swung open, revealing a tall blonde man with thick eyebrows who was grinning cheek to cheek. Great. Erwin’s here. Maybe they could send a few more uninvited people, order greasy pizza, and have a party in his office.

“Over who?” Erwin asks, ever the gossip man. Levi grunts and rests his forehead in his palms as Hange greets Erwin enthusiastically before answering.

“You know who.”

Erwin narrows his eyes at Levi before sitting down on the other edge of the couch. Hange tells him about getting a blind date. “You could try, Hange. I’ve set him up with surprise blind dates before and you know how that went.”

“Can you two fucking shut up and leave? I’m trying to work here,” Levi spat in annoyance. The pair ignores his grumbling, carrying on their conversation like he wasn’t in the room.

“But I have never set him up with someone before,” Hange points out.

Erwin purses his lips. “I doubt that you can find a girl better than me, Hange. I tried everything.”

Erwin and Hange look at each other with mischief, clearly enjoying Levi’s suffering from their teasing. He knows they won’t stop. If anything, it only egged them on further.

Hange places a finger on her chin obnoxiously. “Maybe you could ask the girl to wear green next time.”

Erwin nods, crossing his arms like he’s actually considering it. “Absolutely. We all know Levi still loves his greenie.”

God, even her nickname is a pain to hear.

Levi slams a hand down his mahogany desk so loud that people outside his office probably heard it. It didn’t faze his friends who were snickering on the couch though. They know he’s about to blow. He’s so frustrated that he almost ran a finger through his well-kept hair but caught himself before damaging it, exhaling loudly in frustration before speaking.

“Look, you dipshits. I told you a thousand times. Forget about that damned woman. I’m not dating because I’m goddamn busy with all these expansions, not because I’m not over a girl who left us all without a fucking trace.” Every word is laced with venom and he ends it with a huff.

“Fine. We get it. You’re over her but you’re still angry at her.” Hange rolls her eyes.

Levi doesn’t know exactly when they started referring to her as mere stories or inside jokes. But evidently, it turned out that way. They used to be hurt at the thought of her disappearing. Slowly, they started to forget. Except him. He’s still angry and confused when he thinks of a reason why.

“I am,” he admits.

“And if she comes to see you again? What will you do?”

This question again, Levi thinks.

He sighs. Like an automated machine, he answers the question as he did a myriad of times before, the first being the answer to one of your stupid games of what-if questions when you were together. Most were just ways to make him say those damn three words to you. It was usually just dumb things like “What if I was a worm?” and he would roll his eyes and tell you that he would unhesitatingly kill you before kissing you when you frown in disappointment. One question, however, deeply offended him more than anything.

“Levi, what if I asked you to break up with me?”

You were sitting on the couch with a blanket draped over your legs, still reeling from the sad romantic movie the two of you watched where the disabled paralyzed man still decides to die even after he fell in love with his caregiver.

Levi, who’s in the middle of choosing another movie from your collection of DVDs, freezes in his seat. He doesn’t turn to look at you but you see his whole body tensed up having heard what you said.

“What if we break up like that?”

You repeat the question with a pout on your lips. Levi finally looks at you with a frown on his face. He sighs and looks away, gaze lifting up for a second as if he’s thinking.

“No,” he answers even if the question upsets him. “We’re not gonna break up.”

You noticed that his mood falters from your question.  Feeling a little bad, you wrap a hand around his bicep, pulling yourself close to his side. With a smile, you lean in and give him a peck on the cheek. “Don’t be sad. It was just hypothetical.”

He instantly leans unto you. He always does so when you’re near—like opposite sides of a magnet being pulled together by force. He always wants to be near you.

“Can you just go back to stupid questions like the worm shit?” He asks with a low voice, faces too close to each other that his lips could brush yours.

You give him a teasing grin and hum, nodding but doing the exact opposite of what he asked. Ever his stubborn girl, you continue asking. “But what if I leave you?”

He glares at you, not very pained this time, knowing it’s just you teasing again. Instead, his brows furrowed as he gazed down at you with his silver eyes. His eyes flick down to your lips and his lower lip brushes against yours for a millisecond. When you were sure he was about to kiss you, he shoves a hand at your face and pushes you away with a little force, making you land on the couch on your back.

You laugh but curse him out loud for his attack. Levi huffs, crossing his arms and looking away.

“If you do that, I will ignore you for the rest of my fucking life. You’re dead to me.” He says it with so much conviction that you know he doesn’t mean a word of it.

You sit up again, frowning then lightly slapping his shoulder. “That’s rude. What if I come back to see you, then?”

He scoffs loudly, still looking away from you, and spots his box of cleaning supplies. Then, he says the second thing that comes into his mind, thinking that the first one he thought of would seem desperate and pathetic of him.

He opens his mouth to speak and the words you hear from him causes an ever louder laugh out of you. He smiles before pushing you on your back again. This time, pulling himself on top of you and sealing your lips with a kiss.

“I’d spray her with some fucking Windex, throw baking soda on her stupid face, and kick her out.”

Usually, the statement is so funny to them that it ends the conversation. Sometimes, he even gives them a demonstration where one of their unlucky friends gets to be on the receiving end. But this time, Erwin has a follow-up question that goes straight to Levi’s chest.

“And if she insists on staying? What will you do?”

Levi went quiet. Hange and Erwin give a knowing sad look at each other that Levi doesn’t catch. They didn’t mean to push him this hard. But they had to know if he was ready.

From just outside his door where Connie’s desk is placed, his secretary listens in as well. He heard about his boss’ ex. The whole office knows about it. His mysterious ex and the only woman Levi Ackerman loved. That was what everyone knew. But from spending too much time with his boss more than he wanted to, Connie had learned the following about his boss’ only relationship:

Her nickname is Greenie because she liked green tea. Levi prefers black tea but he accidentally told you he liked green tea too then ran with it for four months until Hanji revealed the truth accidentally.

The four of them knew each other for a long time. He doesn’t know if they met in high school or college. But in school, definitely.

After getting their undergraduate degree, she asked Levi to break up and broke his heart with words.

After the breakup, she disappeared from Paradis. Levi waited for her for a long time, broken and yearning. She didn’t come back. Now, all Levi has is bitterness in his body.

Those are what Connie gathered from his little detective skills to cope with having to work under the horribly mannered man. Then, he shares it with his best friend, Sasha, during his lunch break.

He listens a little more, the email he was reading sitting idle for longer than it should. His boss still doesn’t answer.

Inside, Erwin and Hange await their friend’s reply who is still lost in his own thoughts. Erwin decides to push him one last time. He clasped his hands together and leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees.

“If she comes to you for closure, will you accept it? You’re over her, right? You can stay angry, that’s valid. She did you wrong. But will you at least hear her?”

Levi keeps quiet but listens to Erwin. The word closure gives his stomach an unsettling feeling. It felt wrong to hear it. But it doesn’t matter. His friends were just bored and bluffing again. He can bluff too.

“I don’t really care about her as much as you think I still do. When I see her, I’ll do what I said I would. Then it’s done. I don’t care what she does anymore.”

[1] Expendable Hearts (Levi X F!Reader)

It’s been five days since you coincidentally met Hange and Moblit. Before you parted ways, you exchanged numbers and your old friend has been messaging you nonstop. You appreciated it. Hange was always light-hearted and kind. You’re glad she found someone who appreciates her and takes care of her. So when she mentioned that there was a conflict with the invitations, you offered to fix it for her, knowing a thing or two about it. You handled project management a few times as an intern.

There was once a time when you called her your best friend. You know that’s a title you no longer hold but either way, you were glad to talk to her again. Even if you know that in the very near future, you would have to face what it holds for you. Now that Hange is back in your life, it’s only a matter of time and you’d have to see your ex again. You lie awake at night thinking of what you’d do then.

It was Saturday. That means no work for you after lunch, thankfully. You ground through your paper works and clients like a corporate machine all week, wanting to finish them before Saturday so you wouldn’t have to go overtime on a weekend. And after about nine cups of highly caffeinated green tea, you finally finished all your work for the week. Now free from the shackles of labor and capitalism, you slung your tote bag over your shoulder and headed out of your office and onto the elevator.

Passing by Pixis’ office, you inform him you’re taking your leave which he cheerfully allowed, wishing you a happy weekend before you left his office. You bid him to have the same and left the building, anxious to see through the next events of the day. If this was a normal weekend, you’d be content with wasting away in bed as soon as you rushed home.

You handled the invitations over the week, using your break time to oversee how it’s going with the printing service you trust for things like this. They generously accepted your request for a rush order, knowing who you are.

The invitations were piled into a box on your coffee table by Friday, ready to be sent out to Hange’s guests. When you texted Hange that they were ready, she sent over her apartment’s address, telling you to personally meet her there on Saturday after work. She argues when you tell her you can just send it in the same day through an app, whining about how she wants to hang out with you.

Hange, ever the persuasive and persistent person, got you to agree. That, and you still feel guilty for declining her invitation to her wedding.

After you press the doorbell, you wait patiently with your left hand holding the small box of invitations. Her apartment was apparently a penthouse. An apartment in this building already costs an arm and a leg. Hange is smart and talented, one of her research must’ve been really successful. You also remembered that she was probably living with Moblit here. Ah, the wonders of having a partner in life—shared rent. Maybe you should get a roommate.

When the door was taking too long to be answered, you shoot up a text for Hange.

hey i’m here outside ur door ! :))

ok! just wAit a bit

It didn’t take Hange long to reply, easing your anxiety a little. When it takes more than a minute after she sends her text, you tilt your head in confusion. Are you at the correct address? Maybe you’re at the wrong unit. You were pretty sure you were on the right one, though. You rechecked it a few times.

You wait a little bit more before ringing the doorbell again. You assume she’s probably grossed into something and can’t take the door at the moment. With a sigh, you wait a few more minutes, turning away from the door and deciding to scroll through your social media accounts that you barely use.

A smile involuntarily plasters itself on your face when you see the posts of your coworkers from Trost. Warmth spreads to your chest as you see the office through the pictures, reminiscing your time there. It’s suddenly frightening, the realization that you’re alone in this huge city with no one to turn to. It’s a feeling you’re awfully familiar with, a state you’d rather not return to.

When you feel yourself drift away to those thoughts, you pull yourself away immediately, figuring that the time you waited should be enough to press the doorbell again.

But as you turn around to press it for the second time, the door swings open harshly in a swift motion, making you jump a little in surprise and fear as you hear an annoyed groan from a man that is most definitely not Hange coming with it.

“For fuck’s sake. Did Hange give a woman my addre
”

The two of you froze.

The raven-dark hair parted in the middle. The undercut. Those gray eyes and his beautiful piercing gaze. Those high cheekbones and soft cheeks. Those furrowed brows and scrunched forehead that was softly dissipated from his face when he sees you standing behind the door. Those delicate pink lips, now parted in awe and mirroring yours.

Neither of you can move like you were frozen in time. Every muscle in your body refused to move. Your brain stopped functioning and wasn't even able to conjure a coherent thought, much less a response. The only thing you could do was stare at the man you once called home.

He still had dark under eyes but they were more prominent than before. You hate how it still suited him even if you hated how little he sleeps; they make his gaze heavier, willing you to get lost with him. A few strands of his fringe fall over his eyes. They were a little longer than what you were used to but it was still the same haircut you used to run your hand over when you were cuddling. It was a little unkempt. And even though his white shirt is a little crumpled, it still smoothly falls over his frame. It drapes from his defined shoulders to his waist until the hem of the shirt goes over the band of his gray sweatpants that hugged his legs loosely.

He breaks the gaze spell when his eyes go over you, top to bottom. He stares at your shocked and devastated countenance, the casual but decent clothes that you changed into after work, the box in your hand, and the way your right foot has stepped further back than your left when he opened the door, ready to run away at the thought the man who opened the door was angry.

You open your mouth to speak. You know you have to say something. Anything. Hi? Hello? How are you? Is this where Hange lives? Why the fuck do you still look so hot?

But none of that comes out.

Why?

Levi’s face hardens before you can speak, wiping off the bewildered eyes and replacing them with his infamous glare, silver eyes glistening with specks of anger. His mouth closes into a frown but not before scoffing at you. The scorned expression on his face shuts you right up for a second but you try and carry on.

This time, before you can speak, he slams the door shut in your face with an impact so loud it booms through your whole being enough to raise all the hair on your skin, leaving you standing there in his floor’s corridor appalled and deeply belittled.

Your startled brain is more confused than ever. As you decide to slowly process what happened and not even ten seconds after he harshly shuts his door, it swings open again, revealing the same man who not-so-gently shut it, with a hand still on the knob and the other holding something blue.

His arm outstretched towards you and you were faced with a nozzle of a familiar spray bottle. With a straight face, he sprays the fucking liquid right on your face. You immediately shut your eyes and mouth, leaning your face away from the spray. Although it’s far enough to not cover your face if you hadn’t moved, you still cringe when you feel the tiny droplets on your skin.

You lift one eye open, scared that he’s about to spray again. He puts the bottle down to his side, looking satisfied with his work. When you open both eyes, he shuts the door again, leaving you in the corridor with heightened emotions from the first time he did it paired with an itching aggravation.

Was that a fucking Windex?

Hold on. Windex?

The door swings open again and he fully reveals himself without a hand on the knob like the two times before. This time he’s holding an orange cardboard box labeled Pure Baking Soda and reaches into it with his other hand.

You shut your eyes close immediately, realizing what was happening when you remembered his words to you years ago.

“I’d spray you with some fucking Windex, throw baking soda on your face, and kick you out.”

The baking soda hits your face, making your nose involuntarily scrunch up because of the fistful of powder he threw at you. When you guess that he’s satisfied after successfully throwing you the promised baking soda, you blink your eyes open, finding him still standing there with a straight face.

“Are you done?” you asked with a deadpan face, covered with baking soda.

[3] Expendable Hearts (Levi X F!Reader)

You had a plan.

College means endless possibilities. College means that you’re free from your family. College means that you can finally focus on yourself. College means that you could finally make friends. To set this plan of making lifelong friendships in motion, you figured that the first step was to attend an actual party. A messy party with booze, beer pong, and unsupervised new adults like the ones you see in movies. The thought of  it was enough to make you feel uneasy and dizzy enough to actually vomit before even stepping a foot inside the horrible place. But hey, it wouldn’t be so bad, right?

You’re in the middle of drinking (or at least pretending to) with a few fellow freshmen girls you met. They looked pretty. Really pretty. With luscious hair, long lashes, and glossy lips that were in contrast to the extent of how much you could fix yourself with a brush, a lip and cheek tint, and an eyebrow pencil.

You weren’t really following the conversation very much, just chiming in with a few words and chuckle here and there. They were talking about boys, a topic you were not excited for. You’re only here to make friends, you can’t fathom jumping to getting acquainted to testosterone-filled human beings so soon. That hasn't even crossed your mind.

A call to your name snapped you out of your worries. Your heart beats faster. Oh shit. They were gonna ask you something. Your relationship history, maybe? It’s fine. You can just say you haven’t dated anyone. It won’t be weird. A lot of people actually stay single throughout high school. So what if you’re a virgin? That’s a social construct. It’s fine. Yeah. Just act chill.

“What about you? What’s your type?”

Oh.

You chuckled awkwardly, eyes frantic and you held your canned beer tighter. You didn’t expect that question. This entire situation is beginning to feel like a job interview. Fuck. What is your type? Even you yourself don’t know that. Fuck. They’d find me weird if I say I don’t know or I haven’t thought about it, right?

You look around, looking at the men to decide right then and there what attracts you the most.

For fuck’s sake, just pick anything or anyone, you tell yourself.

And then you spot someone familiar. He’s standing against the wall, holding a cup to his chest, chatting with a guy much taller than him. From the looks of it, he isn’t enjoying the party that much. He was probably dragged along into it.

For reasons you don’t even know yourself, you panic and point to the steel-eyed man with the undercut.

“Him,” you raise your voice a little to make them hear you beyond the booming top hits music.

Levi Ackerman.

He was from your highschool. A famous slacker with high grades. Well, not as high as yours but given his misdemeanor and laziness, it’s actually commendable how he got into this university. You don’t actually like him like that. You barely even spoke to him. Just call it a moment of weakness—you panicked and pointed to the first familiar person you saw and that was him.

“Hm. He’s hot. A little on the shorter side but very hot.” One of the girls nodded and winked at you. You chuckled as a response and chugged down your beer in frustration. The alcoholic drink is bitter on your tongue. You don’t like it very much and you don’t understand the hype around the bitter drink but due to the lie you just spat out, you couldn’t help but feel thirsty.

Feeling someone’s eyes burning holes behind your head, you turned your head back in Levi’s direction. He was looking at you and your companions. From the looks of it, he had heard what your conversation was about. He pushed himself off the wall and you wondered what he’d do. Maybe he’d walk over to you and confront you about it?

Well, he didn’t do that. Instead, he did the most ridiculous thing.

Levi, that motherfucker, flipped you off and intentionally walked out of your sight with a pointed glare.

Fortunately, your potential friends didn’t see, having been too caught up in their next topic that you weren’t able to follow. Your mouth gaped open, shocked and offended at Levi’s reaction. A wave of embarrassment runs through you. Did you just get harshly rejected by that asshole? Was he like this to everyone who he hears has a crush on him? No wonder you didn’t hear anything about him dating back in high school. What an arrogant prick.

[3] Expendable Hearts (Levi X F!Reader)

The rest of the first semester of University was easily spent out of the sight of the steel-eyed man. The university was big enough for the two of you not to cross paths. It wasn’t until you found a job in the middle of the semester as a server in a restaurant in Paradis that fate decided that Levi was to be thrusted into your life again.

Kuchel’s used to be a small restaurant famous in Paradis City.

Kuchel, the kind woman who owns it, was kind enough to hire you and treat you like her daughter. The work was tasking but it paid you enough to live well. Your grandmother’s savings could only take you so far and you had food, school supplies, and commute fees to worry about. Yes, you still lived with your grandmother. That was a choice. Your stupid father up and went when you started high school, disappearing to god knows where, leaving you in your grandmother’s care. Your grandmother was living well enough, not quite rich but had enough to be living in a small house in Paradis. She’s lived here all her life, generations of your family owning that lot and home. Even if she insisted that you try out the dorms, you still wanted to check up on her and just commute every day.

You loved your grandmother’s food but holy shit
Kuchel is amazing. Her food is to die for. A lot of big people in Paradis would come by and give pretty good tips.

The first time you saw Levi there, he greeted you with an insult to your cleaning.

“So, you’re the new hire. Ma should be thinking twice before hiring incompetent college students.” He said. He glanced under the counter of the cashier where you just finished cleaning, swiping his two fingers there. He then frowned at the thin layer of dust that coated the pad of his fingers, showing them to you after.

You froze by the doorway of the supply room but not because of his disappointment or his unprovoked insult. He had always been rude to you for some reason. You don’t know why and it bothered you to the core for some reason.

“Levi Ackerman,” you nod at him, intentionally ignoring his words. You got back to working, doing inventory of the supplies like you’re supposed to.

He states your name back and you were a bit surprised he knew it. You guessed it was because you were always top of the class. Still, he has a good memory, doesn’t he?

“You should know how to clean better.” He retracted back to his opening statement. You huffed, eyes only on your checklist.

“Duly noted, Ackerman,” you replied impassively, not sparing him another glance.

He didn’t reply after that, leaving to greet his mother inside the small staff room. His mother had warned you about this happening. She said Levi is unbelievably strict about cleanliness and if he ever comes by, he will definitely have something to say about your cleaning. You can get past him calling out your cleaning skills but to call you an incompetent college student? That’s just below the belt.

To make it short, the first few interactions you had with Levi Ackerman didn’t set you two up for friendship, much less a relationship.

It was only when you met Hange Zoe, the star-eyed girl from the Science department who often stopped by Kuchel’s to eat dinner. She’s one of your classmates in Philosophy class that would ask the most ridiculous (but valid) questions to the professor that never fails to make the class either curious or laugh.

Hange Zoe was a curious delight and you were only thankful that being friends with her only mainly requires listening to whatever she was working on at the moment. And you did
most of the time. What can you say? You were a good listener. In a short amount of time, you found yourself gravitating next to her more than the other people you were hanging out with. Hange just made you feel safe and content. The others were nice but with others, you felt like you were always on your toes, just constantly adjusting your personality to relate with them.

Hange began to have dinner with you during your break at Kuchel’s and if you two had time after, you’d study together too. Unlike you, Hange comes from a province with dreams of being a biologist. You never would’ve guessed as she seemed to be more adapted to city life than you who lived there all your life. When you told her that, she told you that she would often travel to  see some few friends here way before college started.

Imagine your shock when the said friends dropped by one night at the restaurant.

Levi Ackerman and Erwin Smith sat in front of you at a booth one night, the former scowling at the confirmation that the girl Hange was meeting every night in his mother’s restaurant was indeed the annoying new hire. When Hange sensed the tension, she immediately nudged you and motioned to the two of you.

“Do you two know each other?” Hange asked, raising a brow excitedly.

Levi scoffs, as if offended. “No.”

“Yes,” you reply at the same time as him.

The tension only grew, the two of you glaring at each other like there were no other people sitting in your booth. There was no other person that ticked you off like the boy who had a perpetual scowl on his face. You still didn’t know why he’s so pissed at you since that incident at the party. Was it because your companions called him short? That wasn’t your fault. And it was kind of true, anyway. Not that you would say that to his face. His height, or anyone’s height, is the least of your concerns.

Smirking, you continued to piss him off. “He’s my crush.”

Hange gasped and Erwin, the tall blonde stranger, stared at Levi in amusement.

“Shut up.” Levi almost raised his voice in a rush to shush you. His face became red at his friends’ stare as he sent a dagger to your face while leaning a little bit, making you softly get out a short laugh.

“I’m kidding. Not anymore. He rejected me.” You tease him further, spewing some half-truths to keep them intrigued.

“What? Levi!” Hange reached over to smack his arm lightly. Erwin was laughing now, shaking his head. Even in amusement, you realize poise is instilled in him.

“I said shut up,” Levi repeated, an embarrassed blush tinting his cheeks as he crossed his arms. “Tsk,” he adds, looking away from you.

You shrug. “Well, it’s fine. Really,” you tell the other two at the table. Levi grunted and turned his head to the side, muttering something inaudible to anyone. You paid it no mind, wanting to chat up the other guy at the table.

“So, Erwin,” you change the topic to learn more about the blonde who had an incredibly straight posture. Seriously, the moment he sat down, towering over you even when seated, your body felt the urge to snap your spine into a straight line and correct your irreparable slouching.

With one question, you had Erwin talking about his academics and achievements. You were instantly captured by how he presents himself. He’s everything you wanted to be. Confident, smart, and approachable. You couldn’t help but be like a moth drawn to a flame. You wanted to know more about him. You wanted to be just like him.

Before you knew it, the dinners with Hange and her best friends included lunches too. Then, it extended to hang outs in and outside campus. Eventually, the four of you were inseparable. The newest member of the university-wide student council, the crazy biology student, the short handsome grumpy campus crush, and you.

“Levi!” Hange hollered, skipping while hand in hand with you.

“Babe!” You waved at Levi who was already scowling at the sight of you two. The crush thing eventually became an inside joke in your friend group with you constantly flirting with Levi in hopes of seeing his flushed but annoyed face.

The university Christmas celebration is an end-of-the-semester celebration. It’s a tradition that the school is famous for. The hottest artists in the country are invited, booths of food and stores are invited in, and the best thing? It’s exclusive to the students and alumni of Paradis University only.

The first Christmas festival at Paradis University, you spent it with your new friend group.

When the two of you reached the pair, Erwin wrapped his arms around you in a friendly manner when he greeted you while Hange forced Levi into a hug. You don’t do the same. Only Hange can do that to Levi because literally no one can stop the girl. You give Levi a nod when you pull away from Erwin’s hug.

“Hey, babe. Looking good.” You greeted Levi while your eyes went over his outfit. He wore a long sleeved turtle neck, a gray flannel, and slacks.

“Tch.” He looks away uncomfortably, pink tinting his cheeks and the tip of his nose caused by the cold and your teasing.

The festival was as fun as the upperclassmen said it would be. You tried the fake tattoos, the snacks, and even got glow sticks as bracelets. (Hange had to force the bracelet on Levi’s wrists.)

As the night fell, the four of you were cramped with the other students in front of the stage because Hange insisted that she just had to see her favorite band nearby, much to Levi’s protests.

You could easily be relaxing on a picnic mat still on the field but a little further away from the stage. Instead, you and Levi are squished together, no space between the two of you as the most awaited local pop band starts their set. Erwin and Hange were somewhere in front of the two of you, the taller two of your friend group probably had worked their way to the front of the crowd much easier. They unintentionally left you and Levi together amidst Hange’s effort to push herself through the crowd while using Erwin as a blocking sled.

Somewhere at the start of the set, you notice Levi’s irritation. He isn’t really enjoying the lack of space. A little bit concerned, you leaned over to his ear.

“Hey! You alright?” You asked, raising your voice so he could hear you over the booming music of the speakers. He turns his head, flinching to find your face so close to his but he calms immediately.

“I’m fine,” he responds though his nostrils are flaring and his eyes are frantic, looking around the crowd. The rock band was starting to play their best streamed song and before they did, they asked the people to jump to the music when they asked to.

You looked around, there was more crowd coming and you were near the stage already. Leaving now would be impossible.

“Loosen up! It’s gonna be fine,” you tell him so he could relax. It was simple advice from a friend to a friend, if that’s what you two even are.

Without thinking too much about it, you grabbed Levi’s hand. “Hey! Jump with me so we won’t lose each other.” You tell him, closing your fingers around his palm. He stares at you with wide eyes but the crowd screamed, distracting you to look at the stage before you can say anything else.

He didn’t protest and clasped his hand around yours too. As the chorus part of the song came on, you found yourself jumping with the crowd while holding Levi’s hand. It was a fun mess. You haven’t had fun like that ever. You moved with the crowd, not even minding that Levi wasn’t jumping with you.

In the back of your mind, you feared that you’ve gone too far by holding his hand. But you were having too much fun and if he didn’t want to, he could easily let your hand go. Besides that worry, there’s also this warmth creeping from your stomach to your cheeks as you raved with the crowd, singing along to the song. You couldn’t look at Levi. You don’t know why. You spared him a few glances but he was only staring ahead, a small smile on his face. He doesn’t seem to be as uncomfortable as earlier.

When the band finished the song, the adrenaline dwindled down and you were heaving. You laughed and finally worked up the courage to look at your companion to check on him, your hands still clasped together. Just as you turned your head, ironically, the band started playing their famous slow love song and as the first line of the lyrics dropped, your eyes landed on him.

He was already looking at you.

His stare held yours in place, making you freeze in time.

Side by side, you stand next to each other. The first thing you noticed is how his silver eyes sparkled under the moonlight and the glowing lights. The next thing is how his face uncharacteristically softened and relaxed, the creases on his forehead were absent and his mouth was no longer pressed into a thin line. Instead, his pink lips were slightly parted.

Everyone around you seemed to blur. The loud music from the speakers was drowned out in your brain. You could only stare at him. It’s as if you two are actually seeing each other for the first time. And you are.

Your cheeks heaten up as the weird feeling in your stomach is something you finally identify as butterflies.

“Y-you okay?” You leaned to his ear as you were finally able to gather yourself.

When you look back into his eyes, he doesn’t say anything. He only nodded, clearing his throat and looked back at the stage.

As the band continued their set, he never let go of your hand. You didn’t either. Even when the band moved on to their livelier songs, you moved with the crowd with Levi still holding your hand. Even when the crowd loosened up, the two of you never moved away from each other, keeping the small distance between the two of you.

When the set of the band came to an end, Hange and Erwin quickly found you two. And as if there was a gravitational pull, it was like the two of you never shared an odd moment of intimacy.

Glancing at Levi as Hange spoke about how the lead vocalist shook her hand, you take a glance at Levi who was doing anything to avoid your eyes. He’s looking around again. Probably to see if he can squeeze his way out of the crowd now.

“Oh—oh! There you two are! We should take a picture!” Hange jumps in excitement, not even noticing the tension between the two of you. She had already put up her camera, waiting for the three of you to pose.

You looked up and threw up a peace sign, smiling sweetly. Hange was in front, holding up the camera. Erwin was behind her a little. To compress, you shift closer next to Levi who was next to Erwin. When Hange was one second away from clicking, Erwin took it upon himself to wrap his humongous arm around the two of you, his hand landing on your shoulder and pulling you even closer to Levi, making your face squish to Levi’s.

As the picture clicked, Levi wasn’t subtle with his protests, his palm pushing up Erwin’s chin to push him away and letting the two of you go.

“Nobody cares about fucking personal space out here,” he muttered. You only chuckled, looking over Hange’s shoulder to see the picture.

The picture that came out was funny. Levi was clearly uncomfortable with how your cheeks are squished together. He was in the middle of cringing, face scrunched up in disgust. On the other hand, your eyes are wide in surprise and about to gasp. Hange and Erwin were grinning wide and unbothered. You liked it but you wouldn’t admit that.

“What the hell. Let’s take another one! I look like shit,” you complained.

You took another one with the four of you. This time, it was simple. Erwin held up the camera, making the angle much further than the last. There was no need to squeeze together. (Not like there was a need earlier. Erwin’s just a dick.)

“That’s better,” you say. You can’t wait to show it to your grandmother.

“Yeah, only if someone would wipe that frown from his face.” Hange side-eyed Levi.

And then an idea popped into your head. You can take pictures with them individually. That would be fun to show to your grandma. She’s been dying to get to know your friends.

“Hange, we should take a picture!” You ask her and Hange squealed a yes, pushing Erwin to take the picture for you who happily obliged, even holding up Hange’s camera like a father with both hands on the horizontally angled device, leaning forward with his ass in the air.

Hange put her arms around you and you did the same. You pressed the side of your foreheads together. With your free hands, you both put up a thumbs up. Then a heart. Then a peace sign.

After multiple pictures with Hange, you asked for one with Erwin too. The taller man put his arm around your shoulder and you slid your arm around his waist. As you successfully dragged the two to a picture with you, your eyes shifted to Levi who was watching by the side. You give him a look.

“Fuck no.” Levi told you, moving away when you got closer to him.

You frowned, grabbing his arm to pull him back. “Come on! Consider it my Christmas gift from you.”

“I wasn’t planning on giving you anything,” he grumbled.

Hange was already ready to take the picture. Realizing it’s better to be over with it before Levi runs away again, you posed. You don’t put your arms around him or pull him closer, afraid that he might not appreciate the lack of personal space. Instead, you decided to stick with smiling and forming half a heart with your hand. Levi doesn’t complete it, of course. He crossed his arms, glaring at the camera when it clicked.

[3] Expendable Hearts (Levi X F!Reader)

That photo was the first photo you had with Levi Ackerman. And that same photo was framed and is now somewhere in a box that’s hidden deep in your closet.

As you get ready for work the next morning, you stare at the stack of boxes in your closet. Right at the bottom of it lies a memory lane you haven’t traveled in forever. You couldn’t. Not anymore.

With a heaving sigh, you close your closet door and head over to work.

Work was okay enough. You can definitely see yourself working with ODM for a long time. If you can patch things up with Levi, maybe you can accept the regularization offer without any guilt. If that doesn’t happen, you can just ignore each other or go back to Trost. You’re sure you can work something out to have Vanessa accept you again.

[3] Expendable Hearts (Levi X F!Reader)

You do not like Levi Ackerman.

How could you? He’s grumpy. He’s rude. He’s lazy unless he’s cleaning. He doesn’t have any dreams. How could you like someone like him?

However, ever since you got home after the christmas university event, you couldn’t stop thinking about him. You couldn’t stop thinking about how he looked under the moonlight. The way it hit his gray eyes and how his cheeks looked so soft. You couldn’t stop thinking about him and how the two of you never spoke about that moment you shared back there. There was definitely something different in the air that night. Yeah. That must be it. It was probably the lack of space and oxygen that made you believe the funny feeling in your stomach are butterflies.

So, no, you do not like Levi Ackerman. Not like that anyway. Maybe you’re finally seeing him as a friend? Besides, if you’d have a crush on a friend, it’d be Erwin.

“Whatcha thinking of, Greenie?” Hange asked as she plopped herself on the couch next to you, handing you a cup of a drink they mixed. You’re at some party hosted in a club a little bit away from campus. You should probably be doing better things than attending a christmas frat party but somehow, Hange dragged the three of you along “for the experience,” as she said.

“Nothing,” you reply, sipping from the red cup. You immediately winced, contemplating whether to spit the drink out or swallow it. You went with the latter but not without making a disgusted face. “Fuck. What’s in this?”

“I mixed it,” Hange laughed maniacally.

Your mouth parts as you look at her and you nod. That makes sense, you think. You look down at the color of the drink, unable to identify just what color it is under the lighting of the party. “This shit’s fucking poisonous, Hange. Were you planning to kill me?”

“Yeah, drop that. Here.”

Levi suddenly appears with Erwin, standing next to you and handing you a can of a fruit flavored beer.

Like a dumbass, your mouth gaped and your cheeks heated up, realizing that he’s finally here. You accept the cold beverage, not missing how your fingers lightly grazed his.

“Thank god,” you grumbled, setting down the cup on the side table of the couch.

“Hey, there was a free table of alcohol! Sorry, I got too excited.” Hange says and drinks from her cup, somehow finding it bearable, knowing her, maybe even delicious. You cringed at the sight until Levi pushed her forehead up with a finger, pulling her mouth away from the drink.

“This is a frat party, Hange. God knows what they put in there. Only get your own sealed drinks. Preferably bought by our group.” Levi scolded and snatched the cup away from Hange. He picked up yours too and walked away.

Hange pouted beside you and stayed silent. No one said anything because it wasn’t too long until Levi came back, no longer holding the cups. He must’ve thrown them away properly.

You feel that odd feeling in your stomach again. He might’ve looked annoyed—maybe even belittling but the worry in his face is evident. There’s this
safety that you feel the more you hang out with him. A feeling of being cared for that made you feel comfortable, a state that you find both refreshing and uneasy.

Suddenly, Levi pushed you sideways, forcing you to scoot and let him sit. You glared at him but gave him space, anyway. He sits down, the space only enough for your thighs to touch. His denim pants are rough against your bare legs that were exposed by the skirt you were wearing.

“Hello to you too,” you told him off and he ignored you, looking around the club. Erwin perched his ass down at the edge of the couch right on the hand rest, loosely wrapping an arm around Levi’s shoulders.

“Should we do shots?” Erwin asked suddenly, looking at the three of you. You shake your head.

“I saw the menu. One bottle of vodka is my salary at Kuchel’s for a damn week.” You’re not gonna waste your money on alcohol. Though you have to admit that it’s one thing you want to try at least once in your life.

“It'll be my treat,” Erwin suggested and Hange immediately hollered and shouted a yes to Erwin. You couldn’t reject it anymore.

Erwin ordered for the four of you. A little later, he comes back with the bottle of tequila along with four shot glasses, some lemon and salt. Honestly, why did the four of you go here if you’re just going to drink with one another? You could’ve easily done this somewhere quieter where you don’t have to watch the girls eyeing Erwin and Levi like a hawk.

You couldn’t blame them. They looked dashing. When Hange told you that she got an invite to the club, she pressed that all of you should dress up.

Erwin wore a simple long sleeve white shirt with a few buttons opened at the top paired with washed blue  jeans. His hair is subtly gelled, only messed up in a way that looks good but still evidently styled. Levi wore something similar with a darker shade, a long sleeved black shirt and black jeans. Only two of his buttons are opened, showing off his collarbones and the soft pale skin underneath the material of his shirt. His hair is fixed the same way he always does. But his undercut never failed in any look.

You heard a few girls giggling when they passed by your table. Some even winking at your male companions. Some even at Hange (who winked back delightly). She looked both beautiful and handsome at the same time.

Three shots after, you were definitely feeling the alcohol in your system. The lights in the club do nothing to help the state of your head. You decide to slow down, refusing any shot offered to you.

A few people Hange, Erwin, and Levi knows approach the table. You’ve already known them to be Miche and Nanaba but you never really hung out with them before. They were there to ask if the four of you wanted to join them on the dance floor and rave along with them.

“I’m fine here,” Levi rejected the invitation. You look at him. Hange and Erwin already agreed and went. That leaves you and Levi together, still being persuaded by the new pair.

“Oh, come on, grumpycakes. It’s almost your birthday! Let loose!” Nanaba whined and your eyes widened, staring at her.

“Birthday?” you asked then looked at Levi. “It’s your birthday?”

Levi groaned and threw his head back. “Look what you’ve fucking done, Nanaba.” He then looks at you and deadpanned. “No. It’s not today.”

“It’s on Christmas!” Miche chimed in, laughing and patting Levi on the back.

Your mouth dropped at the information. “Your birthday is on the 25th?”

“No.”

“Yes.” Miche answered for him.

“Levi here hates celebrating his birthday. He thinks it’s awkward and unnecessary.” Nanaba adds.

“Wow.” You couldn’t help yourself but say it, grinning. “You literally have the same birthday as the lord and savior himself and yet you don’t have a single kindness in your body.”

The entire table laughs. Miche pats you on the head. “I knew I liked you, Greenie. You sure you don’t want to hit the dance floor with us?” He invites you.

Before you could reply you hear Nanaba try and persuade Levi again to get off his ass.

“Come on, Levi. Petra’s there.”

You froze, your head turning to your left where Levi sat. His eyes are wide and his lips are parted, redness tinting his cheeks. Then, he sees you staring and his face drops, his expression clearly showing he’s uncomfortable. Whoever this Petra is, he’s not fond of you knowing about her. But why? And who is she?

“Oh! Yes! I saw Petra too. You have a crush on her, don’t you?” Miche adds in.

“F-Fuck you.” Levi could only stammer out, looking away from your gaze as you look at him with a bewildered expression. If you were in an unfazed state, you would’ve already said something to annoy Levi. But for now, all you could do was try to get the words you heard past the alcohol and into your system.

Crush. He has a crush.

A sinking feeling rambled in your chest and you got the urge to grasp at your chest. Oh. Fuck. Why do you feel like crying? Why is there literal and physical pain in your heart right now?

You tuned out anything they say, only seeing Nanaba point at someone in the middle of the club. She’s pretty. Short haired and ginger. She’s with her girl friends, singing and dancing along to the music with them.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

Jealousy.

Shit.

You like Levi?

Oh, fuck.

You like Levi.

It was getting suffocating. You didn’t know what to do. So you stood up.

You don’t say anything. You just downed another shot of tequila, got on your feet, and headed over to where Hange is. Hange cheered when she saw you and spun you around. The crowd wasn’t as suffocating as the realization of your feelings for Levi—your unrequited feelings for Levi.

You went along with whatever Hange was doing, screaming along the lyrics of whatever was playing. Closing your eyes and letting the alcohol and flashing lights lose your senses, moving your hips to the rhythm.

As you were dancing, your mind drifts back to the concert and how intimate it felt to you. To you. How stupid were you to give meaning to something so
 nothing?

As you try your best to distract yourself, you bump into someone. He’s tall and you laugh and say sorry. He looks down at you and smirks, lightening up when he sees your face.

“No. It’s my fault. Sorry!” He replied, shouting and leaning to your ear so you could hear him over the music.

“It’s fine!” you shout back at him and flashed him a smile.

“You from Paradis U?” He shouts again and you nod.

“Yeah. You?” He nods.

You exchanged names. His name is Gian and he’s a second-year engineering student. He’s good looking and tall, definitely more than 6 feet. Fair skinned with long dark hair tied up in a manbun, revealing the multiple piercings on his ears. He’s wearing a simple and fitted black shirt and jeans, showing off the muscles of his biceps. Everything is telling you that he’s bad news but you don’t seem to care at the moment. Besides, he might not be interested in you anyway.

You introduce him to Hange and he happily gets to know her. Somehow, Nanaba and Miche but without Levi. You badly want to look at the table you left, eyes always seeming to look for him everywhere. However, you know better than to see he’s not there and already spending time with the redhead he has a crush on.

“Hey,” Gian leans into your ear again. “You have a boyfriend or something?”

A little shocked and curious why he would ask that, you leaned in to ask. “What?” you shout over the music.

“Do you have a boyfriend?” Gian repeated, louder this time with his face over yours after he said the words so he could see your reaction. It seemed to please him when your face flushed red.

“Oh! Yeah. I mean, no. No. I’m single.” You curse yourself at your stammering response.

Great, I must have looked like a total loser when I opened my mouth.

A little panicked because this is the first time someone showed their interest to you this way, your eyes looked for Hange for help. When you do, you see her throwing you a thumbs up while Nanaba silently cheers you on with her fists. You even see her mouth what seems to be like a ‘Go get it, girl!’.

He pulls himself closer to you and leans into your ear, this time he doesn’t shout because his lips were close enough to kiss your ear but not quite touch.

“That’s good because I think you look really hot in your skirt,” he whispered, lips almost kissing your ear. His voice, rough and deep, sent chills down your spine and parted your lips in anticipation for the attention he’s giving you.

The back of your mind is screaming a name, hoping you would see him—hoping he would see you. But you know that now, it’s impossible. He doesn’t want you like that.

So you pull yourself closer to the named stranger, your bodies flush against each other. A stray hand presses down on your back, sliding down to your behind where it squeezes, making you gasp.

“Oh!” You didn’t really expect that he would touch you like that.

Gian’s hand inches away from you in less than a second like it was scorched by fire, face laced with embarrassment and apology. “Sorry, too far?”

You were unfamiliar with being touched like that but everyone around you seemed to be getting it on. Looking around, the people on the dance floor were doing worse. It’s a place where people go to do things like this, you should let loose.

“No, no,” you answer quickly. “It’s fine. Just surprised me s’all.”

The man in front of you let out a breath of relief and continued roaming his hands around your body, his face buried in your neck. You were relaxing into it, trying to appease yourself in this type of closure.

“Greenie.”

Your head whipped around to the deep voice calling you. Levi stands there, not too close but even your company could feel the threat looming in his impassive cold stance. It was enough to make you keep a distance with Gian as if you were doing something wrong.

“Levi,” it came out more of a whisper. You weren’t even sure if Gian even heard it.

The silver-eyed man steps closer this time, maybe so you can hear him. “Erwin is not feeling well. I think we should go. Where’s Hange?” He looks around the crowd, looking for Hange. Or avoiding your eyes because of the lie.

You found that hard to believe because it’s Erwin. That man never gets sick. His daily vitamins and supplements are scheduled and he holds his alcohol really well. Maybe the best drinker out of the four of you.

“Oh,” you choose to believe anyway. “I guess we should. Uhm
” You face Gian. “I’m sorry. This is my friend, Levi.”

Gian doesn’t hide the disappointment in his face but smiles anyway. “Don’t even worry about it. Sup, bro? I’m Gian.”

Levi only nods in acknowledgement, nothing ill-mannered when it comes to him. He always acts this way with every new person he meets.

“I guess I’ll see you around, Gian.” You smile up at him. Before he can respond, the crowd fills up more as the DJ puts on a popular club song, pushing Levi to you. Discomfort creeps into Levi’s face and unconsciously, he reaches for your wrist for some familiarity.

“Let’s go,” he says with an irritated look on his face.

“Wait.” Gian places a hand on your shoulder. “You’re on Facebook, right?”

You nod and before you can say anything else, Levi was already dragging you out of the crowd. You hear Gian shout out a follow that he’ll find you there before looking at the man ahead of you, holding your wrist tightly but not so much that it hurts.

As you follow Levi, you pass by your table where you see a very much sober-looking Erwin who stared into your eyes knowingly with a smirk and his arm around a girl’s shoulder you don’t know. Hange can’t be found anywhere. Miche and Nanaba as well. It didn’t look like the group was getting ready to leave at all.

You try and tug your hand out of his grip, protesting as you walk through the night club. When you finally reach the outside of the club, the cold air hits your skin, setting goosebumps all over. Levi finally lets go, his back still turned to you.

“What the hell is going on, Levi?” There’s a slight shiver to your question, your arms coming up to protect yourself from the cold.

He doesn’t turn around, standing still in front of you.

“Hey—”

“Let’s go home.” He turns without looking at you, attempting to walk off without even uttering an explanation as to why he insists that the two of you go home.

Unwilling to accept his orders, you huff and grab him by the shoulder, halting his steps. “I am not going home! What the hell is wrong with you?”

“Then go back inside. Fuck!” He shrugs your hand off his shoulder, glaring at you for a second before looking away again. This is a mood from Levi you can’t read. You’ve seen him annoyed. You’ve seen him irritated. You’ve even seen him happy. But this one, you can’t understand. And you have a feeling that it’s because of you. And that sets an uneasy feeling in your chest. Levi and you always fight but he was still a friend.

“What’s gotten into you, Levi?” Your voice softens, as if cowering. It must be the alcohol (or that poison drink Hange gave you) in your system that had your walls down for a moment. Levi has also never seen you like this. It’s without doubt that his sudden attitude scared you.

“It’s
” He paused. The thought of scaring you made him clear his thoughts a little. He doesn’t know what’s gotten into him. “Nothing.”

You weren’t satisfied with his answer, you made sure he gets that with your answer. “It’s not nothing.”

“Why do you hate me so much?” The softness of your voice surprised him, it’s far from your usual behavior with him. It’s like you were baring yourself, the alcohol you guess is doing the work.

There is deafening silence for a few seconds, the cold doing nothing to help the situation. He takes a step closer, brows furrowed and a frown painted on his face.

“I don’t hate you.” He hissed, as if you said something offensive to him.

Your jaw clenched, biting your words in frustration. “You do!” You keep the distance closer. “You hate me because I’m not well off. Like I’m not fucking worthy of your time because I don’t come from money like you.”

“That’s not at all true,” he argues, equally frustrated now. “Is that what you think of me? A pompous elitist?”

No, I don’t think that. Maybe at first
 but not anymore.

“Yes.”

“Well, you’re fucking wrong,” he blanks. “You know what? I do hate you.”

“I fucking hate you,” he repeats. “I’ve hated you since high school. It was awful. Seeing you try so hard, not making friends, and ignoring everyone who tries to get close. It was fine, really. I didn’t care. That’s your shitty life. And then you get here. And suddenly you’re in my life trying to be someone else. You get to my mom, my friends, my home. It’s so fucking annoying.”

You’re stunned. Somewhere, somehow, you hear your heart breaking from a distance. For the second time that night, your chest tightens, but for a different type of pain. A pain that didn’t feel good as realized earlier.

“I fucking hate you.” As if it wasn’t enough, he repeats it.

“I
” He takes a deep breath, closing his eyes, pushing his hands into the pockets of his jacket. “I fucking hate that you’re in my head. All the fucking time.”

“You’re making me so insane that I just wish that you would stay away from me,” he ranted, eyes still closed so tight that his brows furrowed and forehead wrinkled. You can see how his cheeks and ears are red, blazing from intense cold or emotion. You weren’t sure.

“But I
don’t really want you anywhere else.”

[3] Expendable Hearts (Levi X F!Reader)

The sound of your phone buzzing pulls you back to reality. Why now of all times were you reminiscing about how you and Levi came to be? At corporate lunch time at that.

You reached for your phone, seeing a text from Hange. She was trying to schedule you with a tailor to have the bridesmaid dress of the girl who canceled refitted to your body. You send her your schedule, not having a lot of time left on both the wedding and your time availability.

After a few minutes, you received a text back from Hange.

Great! I scheduled you on Sunday, 10AM! Levi will pick you up and come with you. Love ya!

Oh, Hange. I’m gonna fucking kill you.

Ignoring Levi until he snaps | Levi x gn!Reader

Content: Reader's taller than Levi, slight angst from Levi's POV

Warnings: Maybe OOC Levi but I literally do not care right now. This is how I picture him in my head, and this is how he acted when I shifted. Suck my balls /j

Notes: I shifted earlier and this is what came out of it. Thought it would make a good fic. Based off of the game more than the show, and a Japanese drama CD I listened to of AOT (mainly Erwin's part). Also no established relationship between you and Levi.

Edit 4/24/22: Woah, thank you all so much for all the reblogs and likes you guys!!! I did not expect this to blow up, thank y'all!!! <3

Ignoring Levi Until He Snaps | Levi X Gn!Reader

(Y/n) looked around the training field, trying to spot a smaller figure. Eren was out, which would mean that the Captain would be in tow somewhere. Maybe even off resting underneath a tree? The more the cadet looked around, the more people began to notice she hadn't come to train.

Hange was the one to approach them, arms behind their head. "Oi! (L/n)! Whatcha doin' here?"

"Ah, hey Hange. Sorry I'm...looking for something." They looked at the section commander before glancing around again.

"Oh, I can help you find it. What is it?"

"Oh, uhm, no thanks. I can find it on my own-"

Hange lowered their arms and grinned. "Aw c'mon! I can help out! What'd you lose? Did Jean steal your candy again?"

"No, not this time." (Y/n) mumbled, side-stepping to try to peer over Reiner's broad frame in the distance.

Hange followed their line of sight, then sighed. "Oh, you're looking for someone."

(Y/n) mindlessly hummed an affirmation. Hange sighed again. "I swear, you're like the Mikasa to Levi's Eren..."

(Y/n) choked on their spit before whipping to the section commander. "H-hey! Is it that obvious...?"

"Painfully." Hange groaned. "You know, it wouldn't be as obvious if you spent more time with other people..."

(Y/n) silently stared at Hange for a moment, before glancing at the ground. "Guess I have been neglecting everybody, huh...? 'M sorry, Hange."

Hange, playing along, huffed and crossed their arms, turning away. "I'm hurt, (L/n)."

"Ah- okay! I'll do anything you want today, forget Levi." (Y/n) raised their hands to appease the eccentric commander.

It was Hange's turn to whip to them now. "Really?! Then c'mon, there's some things I wanna do today!"

Hange barely heard (Y/n)'s protests as they were dragged by hand. Both of them missed the sharp gaze from across the field.

~*~*~*

First Time

(Y/n) held a hand over their mouth as they yawned, finishing up some dishes early in the morning before Hange could get their hands on (Y/n) again. Drying off their hands, they were more focused on staying awake than their surroundings, and completely missed the sound of footsteps approaching them.

"Oi, (Y/n)."

They immediately grew stiff and turned around. They looked down at the Captain for a moment, feeling their whole world spin in delight. Fighting off a huge smile, they played it cool.

"Ah, morning Levi. I didn't hear you come in."

"That's okay. I saw you with four-eyes yesterday. What did they drag you off to do?" He moved closer, looking up at them with interest.

"Nothing special," they yawned. "But, they certainly kept me up all night..."

Levi nodded, the corners of his lips twitching upwards. "I can make us some tea. We haven't sat down to have it in a while."

(Y/n) looked down at him with sleepy eyes before giving him a small nod and smile. Levi moved past them to grab the kettle before Hange burst in.

"Oi! (L/n)! Let's get a move on, you promised to do some more experiments with me today!"

"O-oh, I did? Ah, 'm sorry Levi. Guess tea'll have to wait."

Levi looked up at them, then over at Hange with a slight glare. "...sure. I'll have tea with myself, then."

Hange dragged (Y/n) off, then stuck their tongue out at Levi when they weren't looking.

~*~*~*

Second Time

Erwin had been keeping (Y/n) busy with meetings. Well, Erwin told Miche, Hange and Levi as such. In reality, it was to have conversations about the media he consumed when he found out they consumed the same ones. It was a good past time and a great way to grow closer to Erwin, but (Y/n) would be lying if they said it wasn't weird to see Erwin in that state.

Currently, they were running ten minutes late for their "meeting" with the man. Turning a corner to run up some stairs without looking, (Y/n) hadn't noticed Levi until they hit each other.

"Ah, L-Levi! I'm sorry, I'm in a bit of a rush."

"Woah, hey, what about?" Levi shot his hand out to grab their wrist when they tried to move past.

"I'm sorry, I'm late for a meeting with Erwin."

Levi narrowed his eyes. "You've been having a lot of those with him lately."

"I know, I'm sorry. I promise soon we'll sit down and actually have a conversation. But right now, I really need to-"

"(Y/n)! Hurry. My office, now!" Erwin called from the top of the stairs.

"A-Ah, sorry sir! I'm sorry Levi, I gotta go." They slipped from his grip and ran up the remaining stairs.

Levi gave Erwin a hard glare once he saw (Y/n) slip into his office. Erwin caught it and just shut his door. The blonde authority figure turned to (Y/n), who had seated themselves in their usual spot before looking up at him.

"Yes?"

"Before we begin, I have to ask, is there something going on between you and Captain Levi?"

(Y/n) quirked a brow. "Huh? No. Who told you there was?"

"Nobody. Just, nevermind. It's probably nothing." Erwin shook his head.

"Uh, alright, sir. Anyways, continue."

~*~*~*

Third Time

Reiner was leading (Y/n) by the small of their back onto the training field. "I don't think we've trained like this since our boot camp days! You got so wrapped up in that Levi guy that you just kinda stopped hanging out with all of us."

"Yeah," Eren piped up. "Did you guys break up or something, by the way? Levi's been looking real sour for the past month and a half and you've been spending all your time with us..."

"Don't be silly, they never dated in the first place. Right?" Reiner looked down at them.

"Yeah." (Y/n) nodded.

Eren chuckled. "But you'd like to."

That earned him an elbow in the side. "Shut your face! He might hear you!"

Reiner snickered while Eren let out a pained laugh. "Aw, c'mon, (Y/n)! He's not out here."

"You don't know that. He could be behind us and we wouldn't know unless he says-"

"Oi."

"Yeah, that."

(Y/n) then suddenly went stiff before turning around with the two men. Levi didn't look too happy.

"Reiner. Get your hand off them."

"Why, Captain? I was leading them out into the grounds to train."

"With Eren, too? Likely story."

"Captain Levi, please, we were all gonna train and-" (Y/n) tried reasoning.

"And what? Blow off our plans again?"

"What? What plans? We never-"

But all too quickly, Levi snatched (Y/n)'s wrist and stalked off with them, leaving a cackling Eren and Reiner behind. (Y/n) could only mindlessly follow Levi with how hard his grip was. They'd never break it if they tried.

Eventually, Levi brought them into the kitchen where he plopped them at a table. "Sit while I make tea. Don't let four-eyes barge in again."

(Y/n) could only dumbly sit there. "But I thought..."

Levi put the kettle on the stove. "Thought what?"

"Hange said that you wouldn't like me being around all the time."

"When'd they say that?" Levi turned to look at them.

"That sleepless night I had, when you watched them drag me off? I thought I was giving you space."

"Too much space." Levi sat across from them. "Besides, Hange will say anything they want to get others to experiment with them."

(Y/n)'s gaze flicked to the shorter man. "You mean this whole time, it didn't really matter...?"

"Oh no it did. It mattered that you'd suddenly put so much space between us. I didn't like it, especially when I saw Reiner on you...made my blood boil." Levi glared at the table.

(Y/n) felt their face heat up. "So...so what should I do to make it up to you?"

Levi's gaze snapped up to their's, softening almost immediately. "Spend time with me again. I don't care who complains."

(Y/n) stared at the Captain, gaping in awe. "O-okay, can do."

"Good. Now close your mouth, you look like a fish." Levi leaned forward and delicately closed their mouth with his thumb and forefinger, his touch lingering a little longer than it should've before the kettle began to scream.

"Ah- ready already? I'll pour it for us." Levi got up and walked past them, ruffling their hair as he went.

Coming back, Levi bent over from behind them to set their cup down. One of his hands rested on their shoulder and gently squeezed, while his other was used to hold the cup as he drank. (Y/n) noticed how close he was standing and just smiled softly to themselves.

Grabbing the cup and taking a sip, they leaned back and affectionately rested their head against Levi's torso.

"Thank you, Lev."

"Mhm." Sip.

You Are Strong.

You Are Strong.

Genre: Hurt/Comfort, Fluff

Characters: Levi Ackerman x Black!Reader

Summary: You were going to bed at 2:30am when someone touches you inappropriately in the hallways. It reminds you of a past event. You eventually trick them and get to your office. You were met with your fiancé and break down into his arms, straight into a panic attack.

Warnings: Sexual Assault, Panic Attack, Cursing, Talking Of Past.

Walking down the halls of the building you worked in, the calm atmosphere relaxed your muscles. Being a squad leader is hard and even harder when an expedition is rather on its way or just happened. Somehow it's managed to get even harder due to the majority of soldiers who died in the last mission outside of the walls.

You prayed to every last family who had lost a loved one to the grotesque titans. No matter how much they scream and scold you for not being careful and leaving them behind to die. The process of grief is difficult and weird.

As a soldier, it really strikes you when you realise that you could've done something, anything, to save them but it failed. Evilness possessed everything even the life on all of the Walls; Maria, Rose and Sina. It hurts. Knowing that you have to live on.

That's why the breeze calms me down. The only thing that can't betray us humans. It's smooth-

Something cuffed you. What? You were pushed up against the wall and the person was revealed.

An MP?

"Ooo~ Do you look pretty in handcuffs.." They spoke, leaving you breathless. Their hands started to roam around you body. From your hips, upwards to your chest and finally they stopped on your neck.

You watched as they licked their lips hungrily. You couldn't do anything but watch. Why? Please. Move.

As soon as their lips connected with your skin, your nerves had sprung back into you. Suddenly, your leg bent and you kicked them straight in the crotch area.

"Augh! You rat!" They contorted in pain but you just ran. Somewhere.

Tears were building in your eyes as you questioned everything.

"What was that?"

"Should I tell?"

"Did they.."

You bashed open your door and locked it after yourself. Breaths increasing in speed. You lowered yourself to the ground and tried to compose yourself.

"Y/N?" Shit. Levi? No no no.

Before he could come any closer, you softly mumbled, "Please, don't.."

"Do you want some space..?" His voice was gentle and calming.

"N-no...please stay.." Your voice trembled and you soon felt arms embrace you in hug.

"It's okay love, let it all out." His hands ruffling your scalp. Soft curly locks around his fingers.

"He touched me...I don't know what to do..I don't feel safe... He's out there....waiting f-for....me...I can't-"

Before you could finished, tears flew out of your eyes and you poured all of your sadness into his arms. Sobs erupted from your mouth as you trembled in his comfort. The image of you barely escaped was embedded in your head.

"I'm so sorry love." He held you in his arms until you calmed down.

"Do you wanna sleep?" His voice soft with carefulness. You nodded, exhausted from the event that just occurred.

You felt him lift you up and take you to bed. His arms around yours, reassurance taking over you, words reminding you that you are strong.

AOT With A S/o Who Has Powers Like Scarlet Witch:

AOT with a s/o who has powers like Scarlet Witch:

Genre: fluff??

Characters: Levi Ackerman, Erwin Smith, Hange Zoë.

Summary: You are Scarlet Witch but a squad leader in the Survey Corps. You are also their s/o.

Warnings: None.

Levi Ackerman:

Knowing him, he'd probably think that you were joking when you told him.

But after you actually showed him face to face, he stood there shocked.

All his life, he didn't believe magic was real.

Somehow it made him feel submissive?

But once he saw you use it in missions, he wanted to get in his knees right then and there.

You looked so competent and badass.

Confusingly turned him on.

Once you got back to your room, he went down on you immediately.

ALSO, he rubs your hands and does a whole skincare in them if they start to hurt.

Erwin Smith:

Immediately saw this as a help to the Corps.

Asked if you were comfortable in using your powers in missions before ordering you to first.

He nearly squealed in happiness when you agreed.

Looking at your powers made me fall deeper in love.

The red complimenting your skin and flowing with your body.

Would help you massage your hands when they got sore and tense.

Basically loved your ability to produce such magic.

Hange Zoë:

EXPERIMENTS

This girl definitely experimented on you and your ability.

She loved the way it looked and moved.

Probably got a tiny tiny sample of it when you weren't looking and used it to test it.

Begs to see it more.

She would stare at you with admiration whenever you actually use it in missions.

Kisses your hands when they are painful.

Just loves it (and you) unconditionally.

Obsessed with the idea that people forget you have Captain Levi’s heart until they see him do little things for you. Like at breakfast, before his morning meeting with Erwin, he’ll pass by your table and casually hand you a loaded plate. “They didn’t have those croissants you usually like but I found those weird ass pastries you can’t stop talking about.” And then he’ll just walk away without saying anything else. Or like, while you’re all suiting up for a mission, he’ll randomly walk up to you and adjust the thigh straps of your odm gear to make sure they’re properly secured and you’re just like “!!!” inside. Or like for every group meeting he arrives early and saves you the seat next to him and when you arrive, he’ll pull out your chair, waiting till you sit so he can briefly place his hand on your thigh as a greeting đŸ„°đŸ„°đŸ„°đŸ„°

The Parent Trap Levi Ackerman X Female Reader Masterlist

people say that if one is fated to another, they would always reconnect no matter what lies between them. whether it be seas, a misunderstanding, parents who chose to go on different paths, or an unfortunate betrothal — they are merely obstacles that the pairing should tackle before finally having that happily ever after fairy tales depict for star-crossed soulmates. it's this belief that sparks hope for four hearts, all of which experience loneliness despite having the company of other people. thus, the conversations with the moon. years of talking to the ever-silver ruler of the night are not enough for four people who all wished for the same thing — to finally be in the arms of their other halves across the seas.

telling the moon their woes, two children thought they can solve their problem by switching places, determined to reunite their little family no matter what problems are thrown at them.

this is a story of two boys who discovered that they are connected in more ways than they expected.

The Parent Trap Levi Ackerman X Female Reader Masterlist

contents:

part one ; two boys discovered that they are connected in more ways than they expected.

part two ; altair came home, only to find a thorn wedged in his little family.

part three ; caelum was too excited coming back home to london but found out that there was someone ruining their plan with their advances.

part four ; after assuming that everything was starting to shift further away from the plan, the people in the ackerman estate found out the identity of the boy mirroring the twin they know so well.

part five ; hours before caelum’s identity was revealed, altair was already found out by the one person he least expected would casually say his name, and the day just keeps getting worse from there.

part six ; it’s the most-awaited day of the meet-up, with levi thinking that meeting you will be just like what he imagined. when desperate times call for desperate measures, the two sides meet (minus you and hange) and added new agendas for the plan, and altair took it upon himself to save the day with another genius plot of his. here we go again.

part seven ; you four are together again.

part eight ; while levi is wooing you on your date, the twins find out that coincidences are laid out like playing cards in a game of poker when they followed lucas around california.

part ten ; the last chapter before the epilogue. even though it’s quite unexpected but both levi and altair received quite a welcome from your family.

“Are you even listening to me, Hange?” you asked, sighing as you leaned your head back on the sofa, taking a long sip of your wine. The alcohol washed over you, soothed the tension that was wrought within your body as the warmth began buzzing through you.

Hange poked their head up from the simmering pot, a cloud of steam wafting up under the lid. With the combination of vegetables and spices, you were pretty sure that she was making stew for dinner — and far too much for just two of you, by the looks of it.

“Sorry,” Hange said, sheepish, glasses falling down her nose. “I’m almost done, I promise.”

You frowned, but waved your hand, letting them return to the kitchen. Hange hummed a tune, their delightful mood such a contrast to the horrific news you’d received earlier in the day.

Briefly, your mind wandered off into the misery you’d let yourself wallow in, but Hange came around the corner quickly, stilling your anger. There were two bowls in their hands, and they gave one to you, letting it warm your own palms, the smell deliciously comforting.

“So what’s this about your ex?” Hange asked, interested, their voice expressive, attentive, as usual. “You got invited to his party?”

The scalding spoonful of soup slid down your throat, as you prepared yourself to start the conversation from the beginning. Hange was a horrible multitasker, though she denied it, and your entire half-hour of rambling had gone in one ear, and out the other.

Though, just as you were about to speak, you were interrupted once more by a knocking at the front door. You glanced over to the source of the noise, then back to your roommate, eyebrows raised. “Are you expecting company?”

Hange laughed a little; it was such a carefree sound, and one that always seemed to be spilling from their lips. “Oh, it’s just Levi. I told him I was making a lot of stew, so he could come over for dinner.”

Of course  — Who else would be banging at your door at this hour?

You sighed, the sound leaving you in something akin to a small whisper, your expression falling in disappointment.

Levi Ackerman lived on the floor below you, in an apartment you’d never been to, living a life you knew almost nothing about. It had been two years since you’d met, when he helped Hange move into your shared apartment, and yet, he was still an enigma after all that time.

What you did know was that Levi was a few years older than Hange, many more years older than you, and he always seemed to be around. He was quiet, for the most part, but he had a sarcastic sense of humor that only a few people seemed to understand. Him and Hange were comfortable joking with each other; your roommate never got offended by his comments, ones that would’ve been scandalizing to some others.

For a while, their comfort with one another had led you to believe they were dating. You’d asked Hange about it one day at dinner, a fleeting comment, as you stuck a fork into your dish.

“So how long have you and Levi been together?” you’d said.

Hange had shot water out of their nose, fell back in their chair, cackling so hard that tears sprang to their eyes. You’d only stared back like an idiot, poked at your food, until Hange sobered, and apologized for embarrassing you.

“Oh, it’s not like that,” Hange explained, sipping on their soda, still smiling like you’d told the funniest joke imaginable. “Levi and I are just close friends. My partner lives a few hours away, going back to school. He’ll be moving back home in a year.”

You’d supposed it made sense, looking back. Their embraces were often stiff on Levi’s end, his affection coming on minimally. Hange was a much more touchy person, so perhaps, that’s where you’d crafted the image of them in a relationship.

Which was a silly one, now that you could see your error in hindsight.

“And Levi?” you’d asked shortly after, curious about the man you’d known—and still knew—so little about.

“Oh, Levi’s not with anyone,” Hange had hummed, rolling their eyes like this was a point of contention. “He doesn’t really date.”

“Why?”

“He doesn’t like to.”

“Oh.”

That’d been that, of course.

You hadn’t asked any other questions, but in the months that followed, your mind had whirled, piecing together an image of Levi Ackerman that made the most sense to you.

He was handsome; startlingly so. Beautiful to the point that you averted your gaze when he glanced at you, your cheeks heating, palms sweaty. A thirty-something, intelligent, quiet man with his act together. He drew women to him easily, took them back home. . . perhaps a different one every night. Maybe he kept them around for a bit, until he got bored of them.

He’d never romance them, and they’d never expect that from him. If he called them back, which he did rarely, it was never because he liked them. It was because he wanted something from them, nothing more.

At least, that’s what you thought Levi Ackerman was like, in the times he was outside of the four walls of your apartment. Perhaps your stiffness towards him continued to stem from that caricature you’d created.

You sighed, bringing yourself back to the present as Hange let Levi in through the door, his shoes loud against the hardwood.

Really, it was hard not to form biased opinions when Levi offered up so little about himself.

When you did talk with him, which was frequently, the conversations always centered around you. He had asked you many times about school when you’d been finishing up your degree; Levi asked you about your job when you’d first started.

Of course, he never offered anything up about his job, which you knew must have been quite nice, nor about his family, which you figured must have been quite complicated.

And, as always, you were forced to wipe your hands on your pants, the sweat turning your palms clammy, as you scolded yourself for the fact that Levi Ackerman still made you nervous.

Levi’s eyes flitted across the room as he walked in, the navy blue irises cool when they met your own. He didn’t smile, but he made some sort of acknowledgement of your existence, before Hange had dragged him into the kitchen and filled up a bowl of soup for him.

Moments later, he was on one of the chairs before you, the bottle of wine in the middle of your odd little circle. Unconsciously, you had sucked in a breath, looking away, as Levi prodded at his bowl like he was afraid of the contents.

“Well, it’s not going to jump out and eat you,” Hange rolled her eyes, snickering, at Levi’s bored expression. “Just try it, Levi.”

“It smells different. What the hell did you do to it?” Levi let the spoonful fall back into the bowl, the broth dripping off the edge of the silverware. “I’m not participating in any kinds of experiments, Hange, if that’s what this is.”

“Oh, be grateful.” Hange huffed, crossing their arms over their chest. “I followed a recipe. If you don’t want it, I’ll take it down the hall to Erwin.”

When Levi said nothing for another moment, Hange made a move to steal the bowl out of his hands.

Quickly, he guided it away.

“No, no. I’ll eat it. Your cooking may be horrendous, but it certainly saves me time.”

Hange smiled, satisfied, reading between Levi’s cool remark, sensing a thank you in there somewhere.

It had been hard, at first, to talk to Levi, and understanding him was a skill that you’d found you could only develop with time. He had a dry sense of humor, said very little with a smile, and could certainly be mean when he wanted to be. His words were often blunt, and even when he was joking, it was hard to tell.

Once, when you’d first met, Levi had hurt your feelings. You’d tried not to let it show, but Hange had known, as always, and had squeezed your shoulder, reassuring.

“Levi’s just like that sometimes, but he’s a good person. Just give him a chance. I think you’ll find you’re a lot more similar than you think.”

Similar was a bit far-fetched, but you supposed you’d grown to appreciate Levi’s sense of humor. Perhaps you even found him funny at times, laughed at his jokes. He was kind when he wanted to be, even if his communication was a one-way street. There was a distance between you, but a part of you wanted to keep it that way.

Levi ate a spoonful of the soup, swirling it around in his mouth before swallowing. His gaze trailed to the ceiling, thoughtful, before muttering some sort of praise. “Surprisingly better than the last stew you made, Hange,” he said, and Hange was pleased, a smile widening across her face. “I assume your roommate had nothing to do with it, did she?”

You made a face at him, not sure if he was insulting you, or trying to suggest that you could’ve improved Hange’s cooking. Either way, you returned his dry tone, swirling your spoon around in the bowl. “Well, if I did, it certainly wasn’t to please your fussy tastes.”

Levi almost cracked a smile at that, but snorted instead, leaning back in the cushion of his chair.

For some reason, Levi’s movement seemed to trigger Hange’s memory, and they flung their spoon out of the bowl, splashing soup on the coffee table, as they pointed it at you.

“Wait, finish your story!” Hange cut off Levi’s sentence, and he frowned, but said nothing, getting comfortable on the couch.

Today, he was wearing a gray cable-knit sweater, and a beautiful silver watch that likely cost an entire months worth of your salary. His hair had been mussed a bit from the cold, cheeks tinged red.

Levi must have come from outside, you’d realized, not just downstairs. Another mystery that you would never uncover — how Levi spent his weekends, besides the time he spent in your apartment.

Distracted, you looked back down at your hands, hating the way that Levi pinned you with his gaze. He was far too attentive, his eyes too intense; even if you had been as confident as you liked to believe, as self-assured, you’d never been able to hold eye-contact with the dark-haired man for very long.

“Oh, that,” you said, huffing, recalling the news that had been delivered to you earlier that evening. Not so bad, really; you were making a big deal out of something so small. But the casual remark, via a text message from your high school best-friend, had been enough to sour your mood for the rest of the afternoon. “Well, Eren is having a party on Christmas Eve. All of our high school friends will be back home for the holidays, so I’ll actually get to see them for once.”

Hange smiled, their eyes lighting up, but the confusion in her expression shone through knitted eyebrows. “Well, that’s great!” they said, as Levi sat quietly, slurping on his soup like he’d been raised in some penthouse apartment, a view shining over the city. You could imagine him with a nanny that had been specifically hired to teach him manners. A playful version of Levi as a child was near impossible to envision — you saw him only sitting calmly, politely, hands crossed over his lap. “Why do you seem so upset?”

You looked away, chewing the inside of your mouth, your stomach turning. It was the last thing you wanted to think about, the way your two desires were at odds. How desperately you wanted to see all your old friends, the ones that were spread all over. None of you had been all together since you were in high school.

Yet, the other part of you considered calling Eren and canceling on him, telling him you wanted to spend it with your family instead, that you’d just have to catch up with them next time.

Who knew when that would be.

“Zeke’s coming,” you sighed, rubbing your arm. “It’s only been a year. I don’t want to see him again.”

Hange’s eyes widened. Slowly, she leaned back, nodding, as understanding flicked through her face. “I see.”

“Exactly,” you swallowed the last bit of soup, letting the warmth comfort you, wash over you in waves. Perhaps, it would cleanse some of the anxiety that sat riddled in your chest. “Now you see
”

“Well, sure I mean—”

“Who the hell is Zeke?” Levi interrupted, drawing your attention back to him, his back straight, despite being relaxed in the chair. Everything about him was so put together. Even the socks he wore even seemed expensive, his shoes by the door freshly shined. “An ex-boyfriend?”

“Ex-boyfriend seems too kind of a word for Zeke Jaeger,” you spat, letting his name drip from your mouth with every ounce of hatred you could muster. “He’s a plague upon my life. I’d do anything not to see him again.”

Levi set the bowl down, curiosity piqued. “I don’t see why your friend invited him if he’s so horrible.”

“Zeke is Eren’s brother,” Hange offered.

“Half-brother,” you corrected, tucking your knees into your chest to rest your chin against them. “Don’t give him that much credit. Eren’s an idiot, but even he doesn’t deserve to be related to someone as awful as Zeke.”

Hange laughed, though you didn’t find it to be as hilarious as they did. Your scowl deepened.

“Anyway, Eren’s throwing it at his parent’s house since they’ll be out for the night — Zeke invited himself. With his new girlfriend, I’m sure.” Your rolled your eyes, tucking your cheek against the couch cushion. “She’ll be better than me, of course. Probably prettier.”

Levi studied you for a moment, reading the hurt that you tried to veil on your face. Usually, you weren’t so open with him. You didn’t like being vulnerable, and especially not with Levi, who seemed to view any emotion as a weakness. “I see the issue.”

You huffed, a sound of agreement, and played with the loose thread on the sofa. “Yeah, well, it was stupid of me to date my best friend’s brother anyway. When has that ever worked out?”

Hange reached across the coffee table to squeeze your hand, sympathetic. “Hey. Don’t do that. What’s done is done. Besides, what are the odds he’ll actually show up?”

“Uh, pretty fucking high if he’s staying with his dad for Christmas,” you scowled, rubbing your eye, makeup smeared on the side of it when you drew away.

Hange’s lips pulled together, flattening into a thin line. “Well
” Dark brown eyes flitted between you and Levi, who was looking at your roommate with something less than amusement. “You could always take Levi as your date.”

“You can’t be serious,” Levi said, his tone flat, lips drawing into a thin line.

“What? That’s
No,” you laughed awkwardly, growing hot, nervous. Suddenly, you were worried that your panicked stutter made it seem like this had been your plan all along. To get Levi to come as your date — which was ridiculous, really, but perhaps not so farfetched with the way he regarded you. “I can’t do that.”

“Why? It’d be a big old fuck you to Zeke Jaeger. Levi is far better looking than him.” Hange gestured to Levi, as if you weren’t already painfully aware of how beautiful their best friend was. “He’s better in almost every way, actually. Not that the bar is very high.”

“What the hell does that mean?” Levi asked, poking Hange on the side of the head. “Almost every way?”

“Zeke’s pretty tall.”

Levi rolled his eyes, dismissive. “Like that matters.”

“It does!”

You stopped them before they could bicker any further. Hange seemed to make it their mission to always rile Levi up — not that it was very difficult, but it always brought an amused smile to her lips.

“Hange’s right, though. The bar is not so high.” You shrugged, curling in on yourself again — just another reminder of how much of a mistake you’d made. How desperate you must have been to have fallen for Zeke Jaeger. Even Eren had warned you about him. “It’s a stupid idea, though. No one would believe it. Least of all, Zeke.”

“Why not?” Levi said. “You think I’d be a bad boyfriend. Think I can’t play that role well?”

“That’s not—” you began, but let the words fall away, sniffing back the self-deprecating sentiment. It wasn’t that you needed him to seem like a good boyfriend. Levi was unapproachable, cold, reserved, regardless of who he was with
Even his best friend. It would take very little from him to sell the performance. A small smile, a hand around your waist. Perhaps a kiss on the forehead for good measure.

It wasn’t that, really.

It was more that Zeke would know, immediately. Would see you together, and laugh to himself, because someone like Levi would never want someone like you. A statement as painfully clear as the color of the sky.

You didn’t want to admit that to either of them, though. So, instead, you narrowed your eyes, challenging Levi, perhaps, even, daring him to retract his statement. “Well
 can you?”

“Which are you asking?” Levi drummed his fingers against his thigh, pale and slender, his nails clean, neatly trimmed. Distracting, almost. “If I can put on a performance, or if I can be a good partner?”

You shrugged.

Levi’s eyes narrowed further, thoughtful.

“I’ll go with you,” he finally said, after a near minute of silence, in which you weren’t sure what to say. Hange watched beside you, painfully entertained. “I’d like to see how truly awful this boyfriend of yours is.”

“Don’t say boyfriend,” you made a face, “and he’s pretty damn awful.”

. LET YOUR HEART BE LIGHT LEVI ACKERMAN

The next few days, you’d mapped out something of a plan with Levi — though, there was little between you that you needed to figure out. It wasn’t as if you were strangers. Levi had known vaguely that you’d had a boyfriend up until last Christmas, had known that you were still close with your group of friends from high school.

He knew quite a bit about you, something you only just now realized. Levi often said little, but he was observant, picked things up easily. He seemed to know you better than you thought, and it wouldn’t be difficult to convince everyone of your closeness.

With that knowledge, you calmed, realizing that, maybe, it wouldn’t be so difficult to spin your relationship into a romantic one.

The story followed: Levi had been there for you after Zeke had broken up with you. You’d been friends for a while. He had asked you on a date shortly after. Simple — no outlandish lie.

Still, a part of you contemplated telling Zeke you’d been fucking Levi while you were still together. He probably wouldn’t believe it anyway, but you wanted to see even a hint of frustration on his usually dull expression.

On your way back to your hometown, Levi insisted on driving his car, one that was a few years old, but still had that new smell, every single inch of it outrageously clean, each crack in the cushions vacuumed. There was hardly anything in the vehicle; a pair of sunglasses in the center console, some spare cash next to it.

He’d picked you up with two coffees, which now rested, empty, in the cupholders.

The two of you spent the ride mostly in silence, listening to a Christmas playlist that Levi had awkwardly switched to, as if he’d been embarrassed of whatever he’d been playing before. One hand held the wheel, the other resting against the console, tapping on the leather between you.

You stared, the movement of his fingers distracting. For the second time, you were staring at his slender hands, the veins dark under his skin. How nice they were, like something out of a painting.

God, when did you start noticing that?

“Thank you for the coffee,” you said, realizing your manners all too late, embarrassed you hadn’t said it earlier. “How did you know what I liked?”

Levi glanced over, slowing down as the light turned red. For a moment, he hesitated; contemplated. Pink tongue flicked over his bottom lip as the car idled. “Hange told me.”

“Oh.”

Levi shrugged. “Well, you’re welcome anyway.”

The light turned green. Silence settled between you once again.

You twitched uncomfortably, wondering how much you should say — or shouldn’t say. There weren’t many times you had been together, just the two of you, without Hange somewhere near.

Levi didn’t seem to be in a talkative mood, but then again, he could’ve just been focused on driving. He was gracious enough to take on that responsibility, and you didn’t want to be distracting, even if the near silence was driving you mad. On the other hand, there wasn’t much you wanted to say. Every time you thought of something, a conversation to strike up, it died just as quickly on your lips.

Eventually, Levi seemed to grow tired of the awkwardness between you, how stiff you appeared to be. His eyes darted towards you once again, studying you from the corner of his eye. “If you want people to believe that we’re dating, you’re going to have to stop acting like that.”

You blinked at him, shifting in your seat. “Like what?”

“Like
” Levi shrugged. “Like I’m holding you at gunpoint.”

A laugh bubbled out of you. “What does that mean?”

He gave you a blank expression, certainly calling you an idiot with nothing more than a gaze. “It means you make it blatantly obvious you don’t want to be around me. I know you dislike me, but maybe
” Levi shook his head, dark hair falling into his eyes. “At least try to pretend otherwise.”

Your stomach twisted up as Levi worked his jaw, frustrated, undeniably. For some unknown reason, it made you feel ashamed, even more shy around him than you’d been before. Levi was probably used to women who knew what they wanted. Who could meet his eyes without feeling a sense of shyness creep up their spine. Who could do a lot of things that you couldn’t, and could match his wit and sarcasm without feeling the rush of dread that you’d offended him.

“I don’t dislike you, Levi,” you said, huffing. “I just — don’t think we get along well.”

“That’s news to me,” he said, tapping the gearshift. The music turned down two notches from where he punched the button on the wheel. “Hange says we’re quite compatible.”

“What?” you laughed loudly, ignoring the race of your heart, the furl of anxiety in your chest. “Don’t listen to anything they say — Hange wants to set me up with everyone. You’re hardly the best option.”

Levi, for once, quirked his lips in something near a smile. “Funny. I thought the same thing.”

You scoffed, warm again, crossing your arms over your chest. It was infuriating, really, how you felt around him. Surely you weren’t the only one — Levi radiated confidence and authority, entirely. You’d never seen him interact with many others, but surely they averted their gazes, cheeks warm, stumbling over words. Surely, you couldn’t be the only one who seemed to feel so small under the breadth of his presence.

Another song played before he spoke again, tapping his fingers against the wheel. Familiarity sprung up around you as the landscape began to change, the scenery transforming into one you’d grown up in.

“Why did you date Zeke, anyway?” Levi asked, this time, not bothering to look at you. He stared straight ahead, passing a slower car, the blinker tapping wildly against the dashboard.

You shrugged, scratching your wrist as you looked out the window. How you loathed this topic of conversation. It didn’t matter why you’d dated that man — only that you had, and you regretted it.

You found yourself telling Levi anyway. “He was funny,” you said, quietly, watching the clouds pass above in the sky, dark and gloomy. “He was charming. He liked to read and so did I.”

Levi hummed, but it was dismissive, an acknowledgement of pity and nothing more. Deep down, he was probably laughing, amused at your idiocy. “That’s it?”

“I know it’s stupid
I was stupid,” you said, defensive, curling your hands into fists. “He was my first boyfriend, and I was naive. I wanted to be loved, and Zeke told me he loved me.” You felt the wash of angry tears come back upon you, and you flushed them away, sniffing. “I just didn’t know he’d told two other women the same thing at the same time.”

Levi’s eyes flashed, surprised, as they darted back towards you. “Jesus,” he muttered, fist turning white as it clutched the wheel. “You were right. What a fucking asshole.”

You smiled a bit, shaking your head. For all accounts, Levi could be an asshole in his own way; a comment you decided to keep to yourself.

“Yeah, well, what’s done is done. I don’t give a shit about Zeke Jaeger. He can rot in hell for all I care.” You wiped your face, yawning as the sun began it’s descent in the sky. “I’ve given up on finding love anyway. I just don’t want Zeke to have the satisfaction of knowing it was his fault.” A sigh left you. “Besides, that was probably the point. Our relationship was likely just a way to test some philosophy he’d come up with — nothing matters, least of all love.” You rolled your eyes. “He’s like that.”

Levi didn’t say anything, but you could see him thinking, his eyebrows tied closely together. “But, you know that’s not true, don’t you?” he said, his tone flat, as usual. “You can’t possibly think that you don’t deserve to be loved.”

You smiled. “Of course,” you said, nodding. “I’m just better off without it.”

Levi took a breath, looked over once more, and then let the conversation die.

You hoped it sounded much more convincing to Levi’s ears than your own.

. LET YOUR HEART BE LIGHT LEVI ACKERMAN

While you were visiting, over the next couple of days, you were staying at Pieck’s apartment. She was two years older, but had been in some of your university courses, and you’d met back in college. You’d found out you were from the same city, and had bonded instantly, having lived such a similar life, in the same place, without even realizing it.

The three of you had grabbed a quick dinner, and when you got back late, Pieck gave you a little tour of her small apartment, showing Levi more than anything, since you’d visited her twice before.

“Here’s the other bedroom,” Pieck said, flipping the switch on. It was a room filled with soft pink decor, the comforter lacy and white. “My roommate is visiting family, so you’re welcome to sleep in here; she doesn’t mind. I’ve cleaned the sheets and everything.”

Levi thanked her, and Pieck smiled sleepily, walking back to her own bedroom with a wave.

You watched as Levi set his bag down, tugged off his thick jacket. He hung it, gently, on the back of the desk chair, unhooking his watch to set it down beside the coat. His wrist looked so bare that way. Nothing to cover it up, exposing the even softer skin where the accessory usually rested.

You looked away. “Is everything okay?” you asked, by way of making your exit, eyes flicking around the room.

Levi glanced up, unfolding a pair of clean clothes from his bag, almost like he’d forgotten you were standing there. “Should something be wrong?” he asked in return, placing a pair of flannel pajama pants next to the gray t-shirt.

For some reason, the image caused your heart to swell, the sight of something so normal within Levi’s grasp. The organ that continuously betrayed you sped up, beating harder.

It was endearing, really, to see such a mundane side of Levi. He always lived in that enigmatic shroud, some sort of ever-present being that you couldn’t quite understand.

You smiled softly. “No. Just wanted to make sure. Goodnight, Levi.”

He said something back, but you were already halfway down the hall, slinging your own bag to Pieck’s room. She was on her side, scrolling through her phone, dark hair splayed across the pillow like a halo. Though, the moment you entered, her attention doubled, eyes crinkling as she grinned.

“Don’t look at me like that,” you said, frowning, as you followed the same routine as Levi, slinging your bag down to pick out a fresh pair of pajamas.

“You didn’t tell me he looked like that,” Pieck muttered, the sound of her voice always tired, no matter how much sleep she got. “Zeke is going to hate him.”

That, at least, had a sense of relief pooling inside you, a laugh spilling out. “I sure hope so.”

She set her phone on the nightstand, laying flat on her back as you continued through your routine. Her introduction to Levi had been brief, but already, she seemed to like him well enough.

Maybe they’d end up together, you thought dimly. Pieck had been single for a while, and you’d always thought she was much more charming than you, much prettier. Perhaps Levi would like her.

The idea put a sour taste in your mouth.

When you returned, face scrubbed, teeth clean, Pieck was nearly asleep, the lamp on her side of the bed the only source of light in the room. She glanced up at you sleepily, batting her eyes before you climbed next to her.

“I can’t believe you,” she said softly, already half-asleep. “How can you stand it?”

“What did I do?”

For a moment, Pieck stared at you like she didn’t know who you were. A yawn left you, even as you tried to hide it.

“Is there something wrong with him? Is that the reason?”

You crinkled your eyebrows together. “Levi?” A million different things ran through your head, but Pieck seemed to want an honest one. “I mean
” Was there, really? Were your speculations and assumptions enough to pass judgement on Levi Ackerman? Or were you just too intimidated by him to admit that he was much nicer than you thought. “Well, you met him, didn’t you?”

She blinked, then laughed, slapping you with the pillow. “You’re so ridiculous. Why aren’t you together then? I mean, actually together?” Pieck hummed, tapping her hand against the pillow, before she tucked it back under her head. “You’ve got hearts in your eyes when you stare at him.”

“What?” you said, bursting into a fit of giggles. You’d thought it was a joke, but Pieck didn’t smile, didn’t even force a laugh alongside you. “I don’t — I’m not.”

“I mean, he clearly likes you quite a bit,” she continued, smiling, “if he came all this way. He listens to you, practically hangs off your every word.” A pause. “Wish someone would look at me like that,” Pieck sighed.

You rolled your eyes. “Levi’s just like that. He’s a good listener.” Although, when it left your lips, the last few words came out slower, more uncertainly. Was he really like that? You could think of plenty of times where he’d blatantly ignored people he didn’t like, left a conversation with a snide comment if he didn’t agree with the subject.

Pieck didn’t seem to believe you, a smile tugging on her lips. “Right. A good listener like you, huh? Listening until you don’t care anymore.” She didn’t give you a chance to respond, your indignant protests enough. “It’s funny. You get so flustered you get when he teases you. I just,” she hesitated, tucking a hand under her cheek. “Well, I just didn’t expect that from you — you weren’t like that with Zeke.”

Again, your cheeks grew hot, your entire body warm. Already, you wanted to kick the covers off, sweat pooling at the backs of your knees. “I’m — No. It’s not. . . Pieck, it’s not.” You buried your face in the pillow, frustrated, hating the grin that curled onto her lips. “Look, I know what you’re thinking, and it’s not like that. He’s just — ” You shook your head, words evading you. “I mean, you’ve seen him.”

Pieck laughed, the sound soft, raspy from exhaustion. “I’m only teasing you,” she whispered, her smile almost wistful. “I know what you mean. He’s older, he’s handsome. He probably knows what he wants.” Then her face grew serious, eyebrows drawing together. “But, I also think you’re not letting yourself admit that you’re attracted to him.”

“Pieck,” you huffed, feeling that itch at the back of your skull, under your skin, that you couldn’t quite scratch. “I’m not. Half of the time, I’m not even sure if I enjoy his company.”

She stared at you for a moment longer, unamused, before rolling back onto her side, facing away from you. “Whatever,” she mumbled, a dismissal, like she truly thought every word that left your lips was a denial. “I think you’re just scared after what happened with Zeke. I think you know Levi is exactly what you’ve always wanted, and you don’t think he could possibly like you.”

You started to protest, maneuvering onto your elbows, but Pieck hushed you, flicked the lamp out.

“Night,” she said, signifying the end of the conversation. “Just
 think on it.”

An indignant groan escaped you, as Pieck shut her eyes, her breathing evening out not a moment later. You’d always been jealous of how easily she could fall asleep, while you continued to lie awake in bed, left with nothing but your own thoughts.

Which were certainly not, and would never be, plagued by Levi Ackerman.

. LET YOUR HEART BE LIGHT LEVI ACKERMAN

Unsurprisingly, Levi had been the first one awake, sitting in the kitchen as he scrolled through his phone, a pair of wired-rimmed reading glasses perched at the edge of his nose. He was already dressed, looking unsurprisingly perfect, while your hair was disheveled, pajamas still on, eyes sleepy.

You’d stared at him awkwardly, embarrassed by your appearance, and ignored his brief greeting before you slinked back into Pieck’s room, putting yourself together rapidly. You refused to speak to him until you were ready to leave.

Pieck was spending the rest of the weekend with her father, so you and Levi were left to your own devices for the day. You decided to take him around the town, showing him all the places you used to frequent. It was nostalgic, showcasing your city to a man who’d never been here, wouldn’t know the depth of your memories, those that were tied to a smell, a scene, a sound.

Levi was, to your surprise, quite interested in the places that you’d been around as a child. As usual, he asked many questions, digging into your past without offering anything in return. And, as usual, you let him, all too excited to reminisce about the grade school where you’d met Eren Jaeger, the restaurant you’d always gone to with Sasha.

It warmed you, how caring he could be — something you’d always known, but perhaps, hadn’t really paid attention to until Pieck pointed it out. Levi did seem to take everything you said to heart, store it in some memory bank with your name labeled right on it. He remembered things you hadn’t even known you’d told him, but must have, at some point.

When it neared noon, you took him to a coffee shop that you used to study at, right around the corner from your old school. It was still the same as it had been back then, like nothing had changed at all.

“It’s nice that you have such fond memories,” he said, and there was a small smile on his lips as the two of you entered the cafe, the smell overtaking you almost immediately.

You laughed, shrugging. “It’s better in hindsight.” There’d been times when all you wanted to do was leave. Now, you couldn’t help but miss it.

Levi ordered your coffees, and though you’d protested, trying to push your card in his direction, he paid for the both of them, and waited at the end of the bar while you saved a table. Once again, he’d gotten your coffee order correct, but now that you were able to read the side of his cup, you noticed it wasn’t coffee at all, but actually tea — Earl Grey, steaming, far to hot to drink when he took the lid off.

“Are you not a coffee drinker?” you asked, and for some reason, Levi seemed surprised by the question, his eyes flashing.

“Not really,” he admitted, his hands folded around the paper cup. “Sometimes, if I don’t get much sleep the night before, but—” Levi shrugged. “It makes my hands shake, which does nothing but irritate me.”

You smiled, letting the words sink in. Levi didn’t seem like the type of person to dislike coffee, but he sipped at his tea slowly, huffing as you blinked back at him.

“What’s the matter?” he asked. “It’s not a crime to dislike something, is it?”

“No,” you said, looking back down at your drink, antsy. His mouth was drawn flat, unamused as always
This time, though, you couldn’t help but admire the curve of his cupid’s bow, the plushness of his lower lip, which was such a contrast to the color of his pale cheeks. “It just surprised me, is all. You never tell me anything about yourself.”

Levi’s eyebrows rose to his hairline. “Well, you’ve didn’t ask. You never do.”

You opened your mouth, then shut it, thinking through all the conversations you’ve had, all the questions you’ve answered, but never returned. “Usually a conversation is two-sided,” you supplied, leaning forward, accusatory. “I share things about myself, and the other person does so in return.”

Levi’s lips lifted up, nearly a smile. “I’m not really the type of person to spill my heart out unprovoked.” He took a long sip of the tea, glancing out the window at the snowy sidewalk. “If you really cared, you would ask. I won’t bother anyone with useless anecdotes about my life.”

You watched the movement of his hands as he set the cup down, fiddled with the lid beside it. “So that’s all?” you asked, unamused. “All this time, I’ve thought you were some great mystery, and you were just waiting for me to return your questions?”

Levi snorted, though there was a hint of humor in his gaze, flashing from the Christmas lights that were strung around the shop. “Don’t blame me — I’ve always been honest with you,” he supplied, matching your posture. “Maybe you’re just a poor conversationalist, and you’ve made assumptions about me that aren’t true.” Though his tone was clipped, there was still a sense of disappointment in his words.

You let his words sink in, opening your mouth, then shutting it, silencing your protests.

Levi sighed, spinning the conversation towards your evening, rehashing the plan for any questions that might arise. Though you nodded, engaged, your mind was still on his confession, the words gnawing at you.

It was true, you realized with disappointment. Levi had never avoided any questions you’d asked him outright, had always given you a small smile, before carefully answering. You had, really, been avoiding him — perhaps, for no reason at all.

. LET YOUR HEART BE LIGHT LEVI ACKERMAN

That evening, you arrived at the party just a few minutes after six, when Eren had told you to arrive. Many of your friends were already there, the street lined with cars that you didn’t recognize.

Unsurprisingly, Eren was the one to answer the door, throwing it open and pulling you into a hug before you even had time to react. Your name left his lips in an excited exclamation, and you breathed in the familiarity of him, a deep-rooted nostalgia at the sight of someone you’d known for so long.

“It’s so good to see you,” Eren said, even though it had only been a few months since you’d last gotten together, not years, like it might have felt.

His hair was longer than when it had been when you last saw him, and he’d bulked up a bit, but otherwise, hadn’t changed. That was a comfort in itself, just like the smell of Carla and Grisha Jaeger’s house, the furniture that had been the same since you were an adolescent.

Eren guided you through the door before glancing over your shoulder, noticing Levi for the first time. His eyes widened, green eyes electric as your name left his lips, aghast.

“You didn’t tell me you were bringing someone!” Eren’s posture straightened, and suddenly, he was on his best behavior, trying hard to impress the man that you’d brought with you.

Levi gave him a once-over, glanced over to you, and then stuck out his hand politely. “Levi Ackerman,” he said, shaking it. “You must be Eren—”

But Eren’s attention was already caught by another part of the conversation. He shook his Levi’s quickly, not bothering to answer the greeting, before saying, “Ackerman? Maybe a long-shot, but do you know my girlfriend, Mikasa?”

Surprise flashed in Levi’s irises as he followed Eren inside, nodding. “Actually, she’s my cousin.”

At the same time, across the room, a familiar voice shouted Levi’s name, running over to throw her arms around him. Mikasa’s body rammed against Levi’s shorter frame, and despite his strength, he let out a small puff of air, shocked, as she crashed into him.

“Levi, what are you doing here?” Mikasa said, smiling softly, before releasing him, returning to her normal, calm self. “I had no idea you knew—” A pause, as she flicked her eyes between you, puzzling the pieces together. Her palms covered her mouth, but a sharp squeak emitted from her throat, excitement. “You two are together?”

You hadn’t even gotten the chance to greet her, but Mikasa held you close, her perfume so familiar, hair soft against your cheek.

“What a crazy coincidence — I had no idea
Well, of course, it makes sense. You’re so perfect for each other. I can’t believe I didn’t think of introducing you earlier.” Mikasa rambled on, uncharacteristically, and even Eren seemed surprised as he darted his gaze between you. “How did you meet?” she said.

Levi sighed, perpetually put-out, and followed Mikasa to one of the couches.

You sat with him, but stayed silent for the most part, enjoying watching them interact, smiling at the sight of him so comfortable. Levi spun the story of how you’d “ended up together,” and you offered a few nods here and there, too distracted by the revelation of their relation.

Ackerman was a common enough name that you hadn’t even thought about it, but the more you looked at them together, the more you could see their similarities. Their quiet, but confident demeanors, intellect, and grey eyes. Even the way they spoke was a bit similar. You felt like such an idiot, and when there was a break in the conversation, you said as much.

For once, though, Levi didn’t take it as an opportunity to tease you for your foolishness. “Truthfully,” he said, squeezing your hand gently, “I should’ve realized. I knew Mikasa had moved here recently, but I hadn’t been to see her, and I hadn’t met her boyfriend.”

Only later did you remember how nice his hand felt in your own — those cool, pale fingers wrapped around your hand, as if he hadn’t even had to think about it. How you’d accepted them so easily, feeling warm, calm, his fingertips against your knuckles so natural.

Mikasa and Levi seemed happy to catch up, so for the next couple of hours, you made the rounds, visiting with your old friends and the people they were now seeing. Historia and Ymir, the only high school sweethearts left in your group, had even managed to show up, even though they lived the greatest distance away from home. It had been a surprise, and you’d nearly cried when you saw them, leaping away from the table, interrupting your conversation with Jean, to get to them.

Later, you found Levi in the kitchen, a drink in his hands, as he took in the silence away from everyone.

“Everything okay?” you asked, smiling, your entire face bright as you shuffled through the cooler for your own drink. “I didn’t mean to leave you alone, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry,” he said, tipping the bottle back to his lips before setting it on the counter. “I managed to meet almost everyone anyway. They seemed pretty pleased you have a boyfriend now.” His expression was completely serious, and though his face always was, it sent another round of laughter through you, the beer you’d already drank settling in.

“I hope you gave them a good impression.” You took the spot at the counter beside him, ignoring the softness of his eyes, the way they melted as he stared at you.

Had that always happened, or were you just imagining it

No, it was definitely the beer.

“Maybe a bad impression would be best,” Levi disagreed, running his fingers across the counter, beside the spot where you rested your hip. “That would make it easier for them to accept our break-up later on.”

“Of course,” you teased, though the mention of the “breakup” that wouldn’t take place at all made disappointment seep into your core. Perhaps, over the course of just a few days, you’d come to enjoy Levi’s company.

Or, maybe, you just decided to accept that you’d always enjoyed it.

“I won’t do that, though,” he concluded. “Not when you look so happy.”

You didn’t get the chance to contemplate that before Mikasa stuck her head through the kitchen door, calling out to get your attention. “Hey.” There was a frown on her face, and she nodded back towards the front door, pointing behind herself. “Zeke’s here. Just so you know.”

You sucked in a breath, nodding, and Mikasa smiled sympathetically before going back to Eren.

For some reason, you were even less prepared to face Zeke than you thought you’d be.

“Okay?” Levi asked quietly. HIs eyebrows tugged up, towards one another, concerned.

You forced a smile, and stepped away from his embrace. “I’m fine,” you said, nodding, but you weren’t able to meet Levi’s eyes, too enraptured by the panic that had begun to claw at you. “Let’s go, better to just rip the band-aid off.”

“I’ll be out in a second.”

Although you didn’t want to walk out alone, you left Levi, heading back to the living room, where at least you’d have the protection of your vast group of friends. You considered grabbing another beer — you needed more than just one to get through the evening, but before you could protest, Sasha had whisked you away, pulling you into some ridiculous, made-up game with Jean and Connie.

For a while, you were able to avoid Zeke, until he’d caught you in pursuit of another drink, your laughter dying the moment your voice was called out in a tone you had never wanted to hear again.

“I didn’t think you’d actually show up.”

You shifted, spinning around, nails digging into your palm, your jaw clenched. The sight of Zeke standing there sent a wave of nausea over you, doubly so, when you saw the woman standing next to him.

She wasn’t the same one that you remembered with him before, the reason he’d split up with you an entire year ago. No, this one was much taller, her hair smooth and dark as it cascaded down her back. She was wearing a pair of brown, round glasses, and she was beautiful.

“I came to see Eren,” you said, eyes flitting between Zeke and his new girlfriend. She seemed just his type. Pretty, intelligent, a sense of style to match. Anything and everything he’d claimed that you were not. “I was certainly hoping to avoid you.”

“Yet, here we are,” Zeke smiled. He looked the same, exactly the same, as if time has done nothing but turn him into a worse version of himself. His eyes were a little more dull, another wrinkle around the corners, but that was the extent of it all. “This is my girlfriend, Cassandra.”

Cassandra greeted you politely, spoke in a way that was much more smooth than your own voice, her back straight. Instantly, you wondered how anyone like her could fall for someone like Zeke. Yet, you supposed you had done just that, which only proved your stupidity.

Zeke attempted to make small talk, and you smiled, awkwardly, uncomfortably, as your hands began to shake at your sides. It must have been obvious, what you were to Zeke, and you felt horrible for making Cassandra endure the formalities.

“How have you been?” Zeke asked, placing an arm around Cassandra’s shoulder to tuck her into his side. You watched the movement with disgust. “Seems like much hasn’t changed about you, has it?”

It was low, in a way that only you and Zeke could understand — and your face was burning, hot, as you looked around the room for anyone to free you from the conversation. “I’m fine,” you said, wrapping your arms around yourself, close to telling Zeke to kindly fuck off for the rest of the evening. “Actually-”

“There you are,” an arm wrapped around your own waist, a hand on your side. Calm, instantly raining down upon you. “I was wondering where you’d gone.”

Levi kissed you on the temple, and for a moment, your brain short-circuited, questions rising up as you glanced over at him, mouth parted in surprise. But Levi wasn’t looking at you, too busy fixing Zeke with a bored expression, eyes flitting over him in judgement.

“You must be Zeke,” he said, and perhaps it was just your imagination, but you felt him squeeze your hip once, as if comforting you. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

Zeke cracked a smile. “Good things, I hope.”

“Terrible, actually.”

That only seemed to heighten Zeke’s amusement, and he laughed, loudly. “You must be the new boyfriend.”

Levi glanced down at Zeke’s outstretched palm. “I am,” he said, but made no move to shake Zeke’s hand, ignoring the formalities. Instead, he guided you away from the couple.

For a moment, you blinked, staring out at the space where your friends were congregating, unbeknownst to the interaction in the kitchen. Then, you were relaxing into Levi’s side, the smell of his cologne lingering on his sweater, soothing you.

“I’m sorry, Levi,” you mumbled, shaking your head. “I could’ve avoided him. You didn’t have to kiss me.”

Levi rolled his eyes. “That? That was nothing.” He came around to face you, eyes scanning you for any sign of sadness. “Are you okay?”

His consideration shot warmth through every vein of your body, igniting your skin. A smile spread across your lips, and you felt dizzy with it, hating it all at the same time. “I’m okay,” you said, leaning closer, if only to remain within the space of Levi Ackerman. “I just can’t believe him. Showing up like that, and—”

“Don’t give him the fucking time of day.” Levi shook his head, for once, his seriousness not bleeding into sarcasm. “Just enjoy your time with your friends.”

You locked eyes with him, watched as his features turned tender, the cool blue of his irises lightening under his thick lashes. Swallowing, you nodded, looking away, and resumed your place close to Levi, remembering you were supposed to be selling the relationship, not making people question it.

Levi squeezed your shoulder, and you went back to talking with Mikasa and Eren, even though you were distracted by the other pair of eyes that watched you from across the room.

Zeke’s gaze was all that you could feel, even though all of your friends did their best to maintain your attention, remind you that Zeke might have been there, but it didn’t matter — not when there were so many others that cared about you.

It didn’t do much to soothe you, but your tried your best to relax, studying Levi as he spoke, the movement of his sharp jaw, the soft hair that rested over his forehead. He was wearing a soft, burgundy button-up, the sleeves tighter around his wrists, one that complemented his complexion nicely. It nearly matched your own red dress, this one a brighter shade, but still, close enough to seem as if you had planned it.

As the evening went on, the tension drained out of you, and you began to feel more comfortable under Levi’s arm.

Fleetingly, you wondered if this was what Levi was really like in a relationship. Attentive, caring, sweet. Softer towards you only, a secret smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, even if he didn’t let it show.

The thought sent a spiral of longing through you that you ignored, and you sighed, hating that you were constantly on edge. If not from Zeke, than from the way Levi was holding you close, his fingers grazing, caressing your sides.

“By the way, Levi, happy birthday,” Mikasa said, a giggly mess after a few beers. “I almost forgot!”

You made a face at Levi, your expression tied up together. “Birthday?” you asked, frowning.

He waved you off, mumbling a thanks to Mikasa, before she walked off to find another drink, one Eren insisted she didn’t need.

“Levi?” you said again, grabbing his pale wrist, your hand gripping the watch tightly. “It’s your birthday?”

“Tomorrow.” Levi cringed, looking over your shoulder, like that was the last thing he wanted to discuss.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

A horrible emotion washed over you, one that was both guilt and melancholy. Levi knew your birthday. Hange had invited him when they’d made you a birthday dinner, and Levi had brought you some flowers, a gift card to your favorite store.

You’d never even bothered to ask when his birthday was. Hadn’t even thought about it.

“I don’t really celebrate,” he shrugged, running his tongue over his cheek.

“I’m sorry — I should’ve —”

“Don’t.” Levi brushed your hair out of your face, shaking his head. The touch soothed you, his fingers so gentle on your temple. “It’s really okay. People are usually too busy with Christmas, and I don’t care much about it anyway.”

You opened your mouth to protest, Levi shook his head again, smiling. “Don’t apologize. Mikasa is the only one who knows, really. Hange knows it’s in December, but I don’t like making a big deal of it.” He sighed, pinching his temple, before looking back at you. "I promise. It doesn't matter."

Still, you couldn't help but feel horrible for not realizing, for dragging him out of town for you, when it was his birthday. “I’m sorry,” you said again, heart clenching.

Levi rolled his eyes, defensive, and moved along, tugging you forward, clearly not wanting to discuss the matter any further.

It ate at you for the rest of the evening, though, nearly distracting you from the fact that your ex-boyfriend was there at all.

You stuck with Levi for the rest of the night, but eventually, needed to use the bathroom, hoping to get back downstairs as soon as possible. Though, your plan was undermined when you opened the door, the other side revealing Zeke, leaning against the wall. His eyes raked over your body, a mix of anger and hunger as you left the bathroom, waving your hands to dry them completely.

“Zeke,” you said, ignoring the hammering in your heart, the way that your panic had spiked the moment you saw him. “What the fuck do you want?”

He laughed, though it was without humor, as he pushed away from the wall, coming towards you. You felt small under his dark gaze, the way he pinned you, so much more cruelly than Levi did. “I can’t tell if you’re actually serious, or if you’re fucking with me,” Zeke said, and it took you a moment to figure out what he was referring to, his eyes hard and narrowed under the thick lenses of his glasses. “Do you really think I believe you? Believe this act that you have going on with your boyfriend?”

You blinked back at him, momentarily at a loss for words, before you forced a laugh from your chest, spitting at him cruelly. “God, Zeke,” you said, shaking your head. “Are you so paranoid that you think I would go to that extent? I stopped caring about you a long time ago, and I’ve moved on.” You tried to push past him, blood rushing through your body; all you could think about was getting back downstairs to Levi.

“Right,” Zeke didn’t let you get far, grabbing your wrist and jerking hard. He forced you back into the wall, your shoulder hitting it with a thump. “I know you’re still not over me. You haven’t been, and we’d both be better off if you could admit that to yourself.”

You glared, prying his grip off, even if he wouldn’t let go. “Leave me alone, Zeke. I’ve never regretted anything as much as I regret you.”

“Please,” he scoffed, rolling his eyes, grazing them all over your face. Zeke had never been a good listener, had never seen eye to to eye with you, but he sure pretended to. “You wanted me for years. You loved me.”

“Maybe at some point. Not anymore.” you said through gritted teeth, tugging again, desperate almost. But Zeke didn’t let you free, his grip harder, bruising your skin. “Zeke. Get off of me. I don’t want to talk to you.”

That subtle remark served to do nothing but make him angrier. His features contorted, shoving you backwards so you were pressed against him, his knees brushing your thighs.

A flash of fear went through you, and though you didn’t want to seem like a coward, didn’t want to scream for anyone in the house to help you, you considered it. Zeke towered over you, his breath fanning over your cheeks, thumbs grazing your jaw. “I’m not an idiot,” he said, smiling, that same saccharine grin he’d given you when you were together. “I know that man downstairs isn’t really in love with you.”

“What makes your so sure that you’re right about that?”

That seemed the question he had been dying to answer all evening.

“Oh, it’s easy to spot, really. Just look at you,” Zeke said. “You were nothing without me, and you’re nothing still.” He laughed, loud and cruel, finally stepping away, giving you an escape route. “No one wanted you before, and no one wants you now
Especially not now that I’ve ruined you.” He shrugged, tucking his hands into his pockets, a dismissal. “And it was so easy to do.”

Tears sprang to your eyes; breaths left you, stuttered exhales that were more than forced. “I hate you.”

“Why?” Zeke asked, curious. “I did you a favor.”

You stared at him, wondering how he could possibly believe himself to be so benevolent, to have saved you from some existence that would have been miserable, without the divine lesson he’d bestowed upon you. Though, it wasn’t long before you realized that he was taunting you, trying his best to make an embarrassment of you, laughing at the way the tears had flooded your eyes so easily.

You rushed down the stairs, holding back your sobs.

As your feet touched the bottom step, you collided with another body, turning the corner, too off-kilter to recognize who it was. “Sorry,” you said, the word coming out soft, weak. “I’m sorry, I have to—”

“Hey.” Levi’s soothing voice washed over you, his hands on your shoulders snapping you out of your distress. At first, he hadn’t realized that you were crying, the tears hidden by the palms that covered your eyes. Gently, Levi pried them away, taking your wrists in his hands, staring at you with a severe expression. “Hey, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?”

“I’m fine. I’m fine,” you said, wiping at your face furiously; Levi was unconvinced. “I just
ran into Zeke upstairs, that's all.”

That soured his mood immediately, expression turning cold, a glare overtaking it as he understood. “Fucking asshole,” Levi ground out, teeth clenching together. “What did he say to you?”

“Levi, I said I’m fine.” But your glossy eyes revealed the opposite, the tears leaking from the corners of them only exacerbating the fact that Zeke had said something cruel. “Leave it alone.”

“Did he hurt you?” Navy eyes flicked all over your face, narrowing in concern. “What did he say, love?” It slipped from his lips, without thinking.

You stared back at him, frozen, hesitant. That sort of softness was one you’d never heard from Levi before, had never seen him so furious, yet so worried. It seemed every emotion that he had tucked away was bleeding onto his face, and you leaned into his touch, let him examine your wrists. A red ring was around it from Zeke’s heavy hand.

“I’m okay,” you promised, barely a whisper, taking your wrists back to hide them by your sides. Your lip quivered, and you looked away from Levi's concern as new wave of tears rushed over you, warming your body with despair. “He just doesn’t believe that we’re together. Said that you’d never love someone like me, anyway. That Zeke ruined me.” You shrugged, rubbing your elbows. “The usual.”

Levi clenched his fists, pushing past you. “Fuck.”

You could see the anger spelled out all over his expression, as he began his ascent up the stairs, feet heavy, infuriated.

You clutched at his sleeve. “Levi, stop. Just let it go.”

“I’m not going to let him fucking talk to you like that!” he said, and it was, nearly, the most emotion you’d ever seen out of Levi, his hands practically shaking at his sides. “He can’t just — ”

Levi grit his teeth, then shook you off, taking long strides to get to Zeke, who was leaving the bathroom just as you arrived. Although the smarter part of your brain nudged at you to stop Levi, you couldn’t help but let him play out his anger, wanting to see the look on Zeke’s face when he approached him.

The loud steps against the stairs gathered your ex-boyfriend's attention, and Zeke smiled, looking down at Levi from under his glasses, amused. Though, he didn’t get a chance to say a word before Levi had tugged him by the shirt, forced him against the wall, his gaze hard, almost scary.

Levi’s strength was almost surprising, had you not already known, but Zeke hadn’t. He glanced at Levi, then you, wide-eyed, before recovering smoothly. “Sent your guard dog after me, did you?” he asked you, a dull expression on his face.

“Don’t talk to her.” Levi snapped Zeke’s head back against the wall, forcing the taller man to look at him. “You may think you’re better than you are, but I don’t. You’re a piece of shit, and you never deserved her.” Levi said, eyes pinched, the words calm, even more serious than if he’d been shouting them. "Just stay the hell away."

“Really?” Zeke said, a smile curving onto his lips. “Or what?”

Levi stared for a minute longer, contemplative, and you sucked in a breath, wiping your eyes. You hardly registered the movement of Mikasa, who had rushed up the stairs, wrapping you up in her arms, whispering something to you that you didn't comprehend.

Before either of you could react, Levi had swung, hit Zeke square in the nose, blood trickling down not a moment later. When the blond man tried to react, swinging aimlessly, Levi ducked, and grabbed at Zeke's arm, forcing a knee into his stomach.

Zeke coughed and keeled, muttering a silent, “shit,” and a few other expletives, but not making any moves to swing again.

After he released him, Levi flexed his hand, looking over his shoulder to see you staring at him, Mikasa holding you tightly. He exhaled, sniffed back his anger, and turned.

“Levi—” you started, but he said nothing, pushing past you, his fingers running through his hair as he made his way down the stairs.

Mikasa whispered something else to you, but you wiggled out of her arms, ignoring her, as you followed after Levi. Your tears had dried, but they had, nonetheless, been obvious to everyone, who seemed to know exactly what had been going on when you walked downstairs.

Still, you didn’t meet any of their eyes, frowning, as you pushed open the door. You ignored the fact that it was below freezing outside, and you were in nothing but a jacket, when you found Levi, drawn to him light a magnet.

Flurries of snow rained down, dusting the top of Levi’s head, like little crystals against his dark hair. It was much quieter, away from the chatter, and the music, the night calm and serene, wrapping you in a blanket of comfort.

“Levi?” you said, approaching him quietly, shivering in the brisk air. It had snowed much more than you'd thought in the past few hours, coating the ground, painting a scene so perfect for Christmas Eve. Crystals of ice hung off the edge of the railing, the wind whipping the flurries around in a swirl.

Levi glanced over his shoulder, but said nothing for a moment, his breath coming out in a cold puff of air. Slowly, you came up beside him, watched as his cheeks began to tinge red from the wintery air, his hair brushing across his forehead from the wind.

“I’m sorry,” he said, blinking at the scene in front of him, as he leaned against the icy railing of the balcony. “That was a stupid thing to do. I embarrassed you in front of all of your friends.”

You paused, before a small laugh erupted from you. “Embarrassed?” you smiled, pulling on his forearm to guide his attention back to you. “Levi, no one cares. Truthfully, I’m grateful,” you admitted, retracting your hand, swallowing. “I never would’ve had the courage to do it myself.”

Levi’s eyes flashed, and he glanced over at you, conflicted. Christmas lights shimmered against the snow, dulled only by the darkness that lingered above you.

“Regardless,” he muttered, fixated on the wave of red and green. His lashes were coated in droplets of white, and your voice caught in your throat. He’d never looked so beautiful. “That was immature. I’m not — We’re not even really together.”

You laughed, the sound light and airy. “Well, surely Zeke believes us now. I think you’ve done enough to sell it, haven’t you?”

Levi sighed, dropping his gaze to the railing, his shoulders falling. “I suppose.”

Still, there was tension between you, and your stiff joke did little to diffuse it. You ran your hands up and down your own arms, feeling the goosebumps beneath them, trying to force your attention away from how cold you were.

“Zeke deserved it,” you said, quietly, shaking your head, eyebrows knit together. "You shouldn't feel bad."

“I know,” whispered back, just another exhaled of the wind. Levi didn’t move, didn’t bother to look at you, despite the fact that you were desperate to read any twitch of his expression, to get him to reveal what he was thinking.

Finally, after far too long, he glanced over, raked his eyes across your figure, the frozen posture that your body had turned to, the confusion all over your face. He frowned, dismissive. “We should go inside. You’re freezing.”

“I’m okay.”

“No—”

“Levi,” you said once more, halting him, a frowning permeating your lips. “Why did you do it?”

His face twitched. “Zeke? I told you, he has no right to—”

“No, no. Not that,” you waved him off, crossing your arms to hold them tightly to his chest. “I mean... Well, I suppose that too, but why did you come? Why would you choose to spend your birthday here, with me, of all places? Why do you even pretend to like me at all?”

Levi stared back, slowly blinking, his eyes wide, startled. Then, he started laughing, and for the first time, it was genuine. The sound left him deeply, amused, by your question.

And though, you didn’t understand, had no idea what was so funny about the sentiment, you couldn’t help but feel the warmth of his humor all the way down to your toes, the sound a battle against the brisk cold that slapped against you.

“You think I don’t like you?” Levi asked, shaking his head, laughs subsiding to a small smile.

“Well,” you said, defensive, sniffing. “Yeah. I’ve always thought that.”

“And? What do you think now?”

You remembered the small smiles you had shared, secrets almost. The way he talked with all of your friends, made an effort to see the beauty in the home you’d grown up in. The way he listened to you, took in your words and remembered them for later.

You shrugged, though it was half-hearted. “I don’t know.”

Silence fell between you, before Levi had cupped your jaw, tracing the softness of your cheeks, the hollow beneath the bone. His eyes held a sadness you didn’t understand, before he had looked past you, to the house next door, the one beyond that, and the one beyond that.

“Hange said you had no idea. I thought I’d been fairly obvious about it, all this time, but maybe I’m oblivious myself.”

“Levi,” you began, frustrated, confused by the way he touched you so gently, the way his sarcasm had subsided, and nothing remained but the gentleness between you. “I don’t—”

“I’m in love with you.”

A pause.

Another.

Slowly, your jaw fell slack. Your eyes grew wide, and you swallowed, as the sentence repeated over and over in your mind, until you could make sense of it.

Levi stepped away, clenching his jaw as he turned you, only his side profile visible. “I have been for quite a while. Hange was the one who pointed it out, and I realized
” He sighed. “Well, I realized they were right. I love you, and I thought that, maybe, if I pretended to be your boyfriend, you’d see I’m not as bad as you think. I didn’t care about spending my birthday at home because I want to be around you — I want to be around you, as often as I can. Perhaps, I'm a complete fool for that, but...” He trailed off, and though his eyes had hardened, not revealing any of the misery he felt, you could see it.

“Levi
”

“I just hope you know that whatever Zeke has planted in your mind, it isn’t true,” Levi spat, clenching his teeth. “You’re not unloveable. God, you were so easy to fall in love with, and I had no idea, that all this time, you’ve been thinking otherwise.” He sniffed, caught between sorrow and fury. “I would never have told you how I felt, but it doesn’t matter, anyway. As long as you know that what he says isn't true.”

You were still whirling from the confession, but Levi had already begun to walk off, trudging off into the house.

“Levi, wait,” you said, grasping at his arm before he could go back inside, get too far away from you. Your head was spinning, and you couldn’t think, couldn’t hear anything besides the words I’m in love with you.

And though he was frustrated, and a culmination of many other things, Levi did as you said, because he loved you; because he loved you, and he listened to you, and you had a hold over him.

Levi stopped, looking back at you, breathing deeply, waiting.

“I—” you began, but the words died there, because Levi looked so pretty with snowflakes on his lashes, and you thought of all the questions you’d never ask, and the fact that all this time, you’d wanted Levi
even if you’d been to scared to admit it.

You kissed him.

Your lips pressed against his, and though he was caught off-guard, eyes wide, he fell into it instantly, arms coming around your back to hold you close. Levi kissed you with a passion that Zeke never had, grabbing at your body like a lifeline, desperate and adoring.

Levi tasted of peppermint, smelled like tea, and felt like a home you hadn’t known since you’d been back here. Something clicked into place, your mind shifting, and your hands fisted in the back of his coat, holding onto him tight.

“You love me?” you asked in a small voice, eyes glossy from a sort of happiness you hadn’t felt in years.

Levi smiled down at you, his expression bright, the corners of his eyes crinkling. He traced your jaw, kissed your forehead, your nose, your cheeks. “I love you.” Another lingering kiss on your lips. “I’d spend all of my life showing you, if you’d let me; getting rid of all those lies Zeke planted in your head." Levi inhaled, rested his head against your own gently.

“I thought you didn’t like to date," you said, closing your eyes.

He huffed out a laugh. “I don’t.”

“Are there other women?”

“What?” Levi shook his head, amused, when you finally pried your eyes back open. You wondered if you’d ever seen him so happy; if you’d ever seen him happy at all. If, maybe, you could keep him happy forever. “No, I’m — Is that what you’ve thought of me all this time?”

Embarrassed, you dipped your head to his shoulder, warming yourself up in his embrace. He took that as yes for an answer.

“I’m not interested in dating, and I really haven’t been with many people before, contrary to what you believe,” he teased, running his fingers along your spine. “Certainly, not since I met you. Does that answer suffice?”

You ran your hands against his chest, kissing his collarbone, his neck, then along his jaw, letting every ounce of your affection seep into it. “I don’t want you to see anyone else,” you admitted, looking at him from under your lashes, remembering exactly what Zeke had done to you, at exactly the same time that he did.

“I won’t, my love,” Levi swore, kissing you once more, sweet and wonderful in the snowy Christmas Eve.

"And, maybe," you began shyly, playing with the buttons of his deep maroon shirt. "We can start fresh tomorrow. I don't know enough about you, Levi Ackerman," you said, frowning, a wrinkle forming between your eye. "But I'd like to."

Levi relaxed, shifting into a version of himself that so few would ever get to see, sweet and caring, with eyes so soft. He smiled. "I can't think of a better way to spend my birthday."

being best friends with levi will always leave people asking if you two are dating. even if you two are in different majors, he's always outside of the building where you just had your previous lecture, waiting for you with a cardboard cup holder, his free hand scrolling through his phone to pass the time. you don't have to shout his name because the moment you walk over to him without a word, he knows that it's you who tapped his shoulder. pocketing his phone, he'll hand over the cup holder with a short "you need that more than me, don't want to experience your tyrannical ways because you didn't have your dose of caffeine". having levi as your best friend meant having someone who silently supports you in every crazy thing you do but also reminds you to never go overboard and hurt yourself. your rant sessions with him are always the best because as much as he looks like he's not interested with that poker face of his, he'll always hum and randomly say "damn, why didn't you say to your professor that you wanted to go solo for this project?" you know he always listens because you can see that tiny smirk in every story you vividly relay or the downturn of his eyebrows when he sees how burnt-out you are. when someone invades your privacy by constantly asking you out without stopping, levi will take your phone from you to type (with a concentrated look on his face that always makes you laugh, you just hope your screen is okay by how aggressive he pushes the keyboard), "fuck off, this is her boyfriend, we're having dinner right now. can you fucking stop, you desperate piece of shit?" he's always your supposed boyfriend during certain situations and it will always be that way. he doesn't mind and you're so thankful for him, so, you buy him tea for the rest of the week to show how grateful you are for warding off another one of your potential suitors.

having levi ackerman as a best friend is like having a soulmate (platonic or not) because when it's just the two of you, everybody disappears and all you see are each other. everything just feels right with him.

notes. i am so emotional about him

. Safe Haven Levi Ackerman

the bathroom door opens, cracks of light filtering through the shadowy space, causing beams to bounce off the soapy water. you don’t hear levi enter, but you feel him, just as you’ve always been able to.

he’s so silent, so careful as he steps, like he’s still expecting a titan to be around the corner at any moment, even when he’s home safe and sound.

the door shuts, and the flash of yellow fades, the room glowing only by the few candles you have lit around the tub.

levi says nothing, and you finally open your eyes, lazily trace your gaze across his frame, blurred by the grainy vision of darkness. he’s still wearing his uniform, the straps tight across his chest, though he’s already removing his cape, the emerald, billowing cloth resting loosely in his arms.

there are swirls of dark colors on his face, deep scarlet cuts and blackened violet bruises. his hair falls over his forehead, thick strands stuck to his forehead from sweat and grime. the shadows under his eyes have only gotten worse, his cheekbones more prominent under his pale skin.

“levi,” you say, in a voice that’s barely above a whisper, hesitant to break the peaceful silence.

he glances over, severe blue eyes softening as they take in your relaxed form, glistening under the soapy water. your head rests on your forearms, and you gaze up at him from under wet lashes, the droplets of water sticking to each one.

for a moment, he says nothing, contemplating as he gazes at you silently. then, he takes a step forward, kneels down to cup your cheek softly, a version of him no one else has ever seen emerging in the comfort of the darkness.

you lean into his palm, his long, slender fingers rough and callused from all of the fighting. though there’s a comfort in that, in knowing that despite all he’s been through, all that the both of you have been through, you’ve made it home to one another.

“sorry, the meeting ran late.” he says, studying you before tracing his thumb over your lips, watching the delicate skin bend with the pressure. “some people don’t know how to stop running their mouth.”

you exhale a short breath, something akin to a laugh, and tug on his wrist, your hand soaking the sleeve of his white button-up. “come get in the bath with me.”

levi makes a face at you, yanking his wrist loose from your grasp as he reclaims it for himself. “not after you’ve just washed off three days worth of grime. you’re sitting a tub of filth.”

“it’s clean, levi,” you sigh, sitting up so you can reach over the side of the tub for him once more. “i drew another bath, just for you.”

a snort leaves him, but when he glances back over, he’s distracted by the droplets of water running over your chest, down the soft mounds of your exposed breasts. “i’m sure your intentions were nothing but pure,” levi remarks, but he’s already tugging at the leather straps that support the odm gear, unbuttoning his shirt.

you laugh, and relax back into the tub as levi folds his clothes up neatly into a pile, despite needing to wash them later. his arms flex as he pulls at the straps of his boots, plains of corded muscles exposed from years of training.

it’s stupid, really, that levi can’t see how beautiful he is, how he is a work of art, molded from the hands of gods. though they have treated him kindly in appearance, their generosity did not extend to other areas of his life. you try to remind him every day that he is loved, even if he is still uncomfortable about it, if he still shies away when you spout sappy, emotional words at him.

levi dips a finger into the bath, testing the water, before he climbs in, the tension draining from his shoulders as he sinks into the tub. you’re upon him in an instance, maneuvering him so that he is between your softer thighs, his scarred, tense back on full display.

“what are you doing?” levi asks, the words leaving him with a sigh as you trace his biceps, muscular and lean, a testament to the fact that levi is the strongest.

“i’m washing your hair,” you say, but you focus instead on kissing his spine, dragging your fingertips across his hips.

levi grabs your wrist, yanks hard, before his grip loosens. he twines his fingers with yours, peering over his shoulder so that your eyes meet.

“after all that work to get me naked, you won’t even let me kiss you.”

you laugh, resting your forehead between his shoulder blades as he presses circles into your palm, relaxing the tendons. “you’ll get a kiss eventually.”

levi huffs, but releases you, and lets you do as you please. you spill water over his head, the droplets running down the planes of his back, his dark hair turning an even deeper shade of black.

as his breathing evens out, he grabs your knee under the water, lifting it so he can run a delicate touch down your calf. although, it’s soothing, distracting, you still manage to focus on massaging the soap into his scalp, the strands untangling as you run your hands through them.

levi hums and leans further into you. it reminds you so much of a cat; he will always shirk away from affection, but he hate it even more when you stop giving it to him.

you dig your fingers into the base of his skill, releasing the pressure there before massaging his shoulders. fists roam down his back, kneading out the muscles that so rarely get a break. the facade he puts on as captain of the survey corps fades away, and he becomes a softer version of himself, one who is still afraid to love but has always yearned for it even more.

your hand drifts around him, around his waist, before you reach for his cock under the water, stroking it firmly as you rest your head on his shoulder.

a stuttered exhale emerges from his chest. “what happened to pure motives?” he snorts, but his eyes flutter closed as you feel him grow harder in your palm.

you kiss his shoulder, up his neck, smiling against his skin. “i just can’t help myself when it comes to you.”

levi huffs out a sound of amusement, and though you can’t see his face, you don’t need to, to know that he is rolling his eyes. “you still haven’t let me give you a kiss,” he says, and you laugh into his back, feeling careless and happy and so full of love for the man who doesn’t let anyone treat him gently but you.

“fine.” you sit straighter, lean forward so that your lips are the only thing levi sees when he turns his head. you curl them into a gentle smile, pucker them foolishly, but all of his attention is already on you. he craves you so deeply, he doesn’t bother to offer a snarky retort.

levi shifts into you, puffs of air leaving his lips before he kisses you, blue eyes a smokey color, grey with desire. he swipes his tongue along your mouth, tasting the soap that lingers on your skin, devouring you whole. while he kisses you, you stroke your hand up and down his cock, listening to the little sounds that leave his throat, the hoarseness that grows in his voice.

it doesn’t take much to get levi to turn to putty in your hands; he hides his lust well, his devotion for you, but it is there nonetheless. perhaps he is a strong soldier, but he is a weak man when it comes to the affection of those who love him.

“fuck,” levi mutters into your mouth, swallowing down his groans as you swipe a finger over his slit. he’s close, obviously so, and you run your other hand up his stomach, feel the ridges of his abdomen that are tense, even under the warm water. “feel so good,” he rasps, lazily kissing across your face. “you’re so pretty.”

you smile, preening from the compliments that don’t come often, but are always so genuine.

levi rests his forehead against yours and spills into your hand a moment later, his breathing off-kilter.

there is darkness in his stormy irises, but it clears around you, and that’s all you want, really; to be able to free levi of everything that plagues his mind, if only for a fleeting moment.

he says your name, whispers it into lips that catch it, the word like honey in his deep voice.

“hm?” you close you eyes, hearing the soft sounds of his breathing, the heart that beats beneath his ribcage. and it will continue to beat, until you can fight no longer, because you’ll never let a titan or anything else take him away from you.

levi cups your cheek once more, traces his thumb softly across the harsh bones. “you do know i love you
 right?”

the admission of affection catches you off guard. he’s said it before, but he uses it sparingly, and that’s always been okay with you. you know he is afraid of what might happen to you, and you know him too well to try and convince him otherwise.

“i know. i’ve always know,” you say, kissing him again softly, his lips warm and plump. “you don’t have to tell me.”

disbelief contorts his face, his dark eyebrows pinching together as he studies you. though you aren’t always the best at convincing him, you stroke his arm, massaging the muscles that are perpetually tense. it’s difficult to avoid the smattering of tender bruises that he can no longer hide under the military uniform.

“i’m afraid i’m not good at showing it,” levi admits, and you soften, watching as uncertainty infiltrates his normally steadfast eyes. “but i hope—”

“levi,” you say, and you know the tenderness of it makes him cringe, but you can’t help it, not when your heart aches at every moment for the man before you. “just because you don’t show your love in the same way as me, doesn’t mean that i don’t feel it.”

he stares, blinks once before nodding, letting the words seep into his soul. even though you know it won’t be the last time he admits his self-doubt, you don’t mind reassuring him. you’ll tell him as many times as it takes, repeat the words every moment you’re together for the rest of eternity, if only to make him realize how loved you feel by him.

you lean back in the tub, your fingers wrinkled and pruned from sitting in the water for so long. but when you try to climb out, levi grabs you wrist once more, stops you with a gentle touch, and guides you back into him.

his arms wrap around you tightly, nearly crushing your naked, warm bodies together with the force of his embrace. though he not one to let his vulnerabilities show, he still buries his head into your shoulder, lets you see how weary and broken down he has become.

your nose digs into his dark, wet hair, the scent of shampoo lingering as you melt into him, hugging him back as closely. tension that you hadn’t realized you were hanging onto finally drains from your body, and you feel lighter than you have in days. as if your body has, at last, realized that you are no longer outside of the walls, and this is not a dream, but you truly are home, safe and sound.

his fingers dig into your back, and you rest against him, never able to resist a moment wrapped up in his arms.

levi sighs, dragging his nose across his neck. the water will turn cold soon, but you don’t mind. you’ll do whatever levi needs, wait here with him until you are both a shivering mess.

“i’m glad you’re here,” levi says, just above a whisper as he kisses your collarbone.

you smile. it’s not exactly another i love you, but you know that’s what he means.

just close your eyes, the sun is going down you'll be alright no one can hurt you now come morning light you and i'll be safe and sound.

( ' Safe & Sound ' )

— summary: captain levi ackerman the strongest warrior alive is struggling to adjust after the war. but you (fem!reader) are there to remind him he deserves peace. — genre: fluff but tiny bit of angst. — playing: safe & sound by taylor swift — note(s): so aot just ended and i'm still in denial it's really over. my boy eren did nothing wrong but i understand, 80% is kind of a lot BUT HE WAS A CHILD WAR WEAPON. anyways, post war. SPOLIERS AHEAD JUST A FAIR WARNING OKAY. levi ackerman and reader have a slight age gape ( reader is 25 and levi is in his mid thirties). mentions of brief sex. mentions of scars and death. maybe some spelling errors i missed but i tried ~ levi may be grumpy and mean but he's a total softie to the reader. — word count: 2k

He inhaled sharply as his upper body sat up from his sleep. He could feel the cold sweat formed on his the side of his head rolling down. His chest rose up and down with each inhale he took. He ran his hand over his face. He glanced down at his hands. His two missing fingers always reminded him what happened almost five years ago now. The rumbling ending. Everyone is trying to rebuild a normal life. He never really knew what a normal life was. His life was all about fighting and survival and now it was over. What was Levi made for now?

He quickly reached over for his cane leaning against the nightstand.

Levi was determined not to be stuck to that damn chair, he did whatever exercise he could without putting too much on his body. There were some days he had to be wheeled around. But using the cane on the daily was happening often. He didn’t want to be helpless or dependent on anyone. He was never like that so why start now?

He made his way out of the bedroom and walked into the small hallway that normally took two minutes to pass but it felt entirely. He was on alert, adrenaline pumping through his veins already. How could he protect now? He felt so useless. Once the greatest warrior to this. At first it was hard accepting this new reality of his. All he wanted to do was sink more into the dark and isolate himself.

If he was gone, would anyone notice? Would anyone care? Those he loved and cared for were long gone leaving him alone. He never knew loneliness would become his true enemy.

He held his breath accepting his fate as he walked into the kitchen. His dull gray eye widen seeing you standing there already pouring some tea in one of his favorite cups. He nearly dropped his cane.

“Name
”

“Captain Levi?” You looked up at him a bit startled he was awake. He let out a heavy exhale.

“After all this time, you still callin’ me that?” He rolled his eye then shook his head. “Give me a break.” You giggled quietly with a light blush appearing on your cheeks.

“I’m sorry, it’s just an old habit I guess.”

“What are you doing up?” He asked you completely ignoring what you said.

“I figured you would want some tea when you would wake up.” You replied walking over to grab another cup from the cabinet. Levi could feel his ears beginning to burn. He cleared his throat.

“You
know?” You turned around to see the flustered older man. You tilted your head slightly to the side and was baffled. He thought he could hide his nightmares from you. His nightmares of the past.

“Of course I do.”

Your warm smile still made his heart throb the same way it did when you two met.

He found you the most annoying thing ever. You were too optimistic for his liking and you were very emotional. You were immature and very impulsive. But he adored that about you. You weren’t scared to stand up for what you believe in, even against him. When he was your captain and you were just a cadet on his squad. You two saw things from different perspectives but he respected that. He wasn’t sure if he ever told you he did.

“I’m sorry I woke you.” He made his way over to the nearest chair at the table. He pulled it out so he could sit. You took the cup full of tea and walked over to place it in front of him.

“It’s okay, Levi. Your nightmares don’t always wake me,” you placed your hand over his, “I have my own too, y’know?” You gave him a gentle squeeze.

The guilt sunk deep in Levi’s chest. How could he not think about you having your own trauma for what you both went through. Losing people you love, being injured and almost close to death several times. You had many scars to prove it. Especially the one on your neck reaching to the top of your chest. It was easier to hide but doesn’t mean it wasn’t a constant reminder when you would change outfits, shower, even during intimate times.

“I’m a horrible husband aren’t I, name?” He sighed deeply, reaching to grab his cup the same way he always has. You smiled remembering the time you made fun of the way he held his glass to your other comrades. It was all laughter until Levi was behind you the whole time. When you turned around looking white as a ghost seeing Levi glaring down at you. You screamed loudly then he made you clean his office and room from top to bottom.

“A little bit.” You teased him playfully. You grinned when your husband glared at you. “I’m kidding, Levi. How are you a bad husband?”

“My wife has fucking nightmares next to me and here I am sleeping.” He snapped. You bit your bottom lip and lowered your eyes. “But I even breathe a certain way, she knows if there’s something wrong with me.” He went on becoming more aggravated with himself.

“You’re being hard on yourself again.”

“You’re not denying it.” He countered. You sighed deeply.

“Levi
I have nightmares, yes. But you help me just by being there next to me.” You gave him another squeeze. Before he could say some smart ass remark you cut him off. “You remind me of what’s happening now. I can’t forget the past...I can never forget. But waking up next you eases it and makes it better to deal with.” Levi remained silent.

He couldn’t believe someone like you could ever love someone like him. To this day he would be in disbelief. You were so warm and he was so cold. But here you are sharing a life with him.

“You make it sound so easy.” He mumbled lowly.

“I know when you have nightmares when you hold onto me tight.” You admitted. His eye widened looking over at you. You smiled shyly looking away. You were trying to hide the dark blush on your cheeks but he would always see it. You couldn’t hide it from him.

He could remember the first time he made you blush. It was the first time he saw you with your hair down. When he complemented you ( in his own way that didn’t sound too mean ), you blushed. His heart fluttered how perfect you looked with your cheeks flushed.

“You woke up because I wasn’t in bed this time
” You spoke snapping him out of his own thoughts.

“I thought in a marriage there was no such thing as secrets.” He joked dryly.

You laughed covering your mouth with your hand. He noticed some faint scars on your hand. He remembered that scar. He remembers all the scars on every inch of your body. He would kiss them gently some nights making your breathing hitch. He would kiss the scar on your neck the most. He felt that needed the most attention. The day he almost lost you for good.

You were fighting alongside him against Zeke for the first time.

That’s when Levi realizes his feelings for you.

He stood by your side whenever he can, waiting for you to recover. He would even read out loud to you. When you woke up a few days later, you asked him to re-read the sentence he just read because you couldn’t hear him.

What nearly broke him when he thought you drank the wine with the spinal fluid.

Thankfully you didn’t but he confessed his feelings for you the same night. Yes, it was inappropriate for a caption to be with his cadet but he didn’t care about his title or yours in that moment. Levi just needed you to know in case something happened. He was ready to hear your rejection but when you confessed your own feelings for him, he was relieved.

That’s when Zeke did the explosion, Levi had enough time to push you off the wagon leaving him to suffer the injuries alone. He doesn’t regret it. He’ll do it all over again.

“Is this how you pictured how things would be after?” You asked him gently. Levi closed his eyes for a brief moment before opening them. His dull gray eyes staring into yours.

“Yes and no.”

“That’s not a fair answer, Captain Levi.”

“Name.”

“Sorry.” You held your hands up in defense. He sighed softly.

“Yes, I pictured this after the rumbling. Marrying you, having a normal life with you. Just being with you in peace. What I didn’t expect was to be like this.” He glanced down at his hand again that bandaged up from the fingers he lost from that explosion. “I wasn’t much of a looker then but god look at me now.” He let out a sad chuckle. You frowned, feeling your heart aching. Was he serious right now? You thought Levi was the most handsome man you ever met. You were drawn to his dark gray hues. During the day they would glisten.

“Levi, don’t think that. You’re still handsome to me and always will be.”

“Don’t feed me that shit, name.” Levi scoffed. His stubbornness was still the same as before. You sighed and rested your chin on your hand letting him ramble on his negativity. “Probably see me as a pity case.”

“If that’s so, why do we still make love four times a week?” You questioned. When you looked over to your husband who was silent but red in the face. You felt your lips curl up into a smirk. “Cat got your tongue, captain Levi? Oh I’m sorry, I forgot to mention how we fuck multiple times. All night if I don’t tap out.” You purred in a tone you knew was his weakness. Levi shifted a bit in his seat then brought his left hand to clear his throat.

“Shut it you brat.”

You simply smiled at your victory.

“I love you, Levi. I don’t know why you can’t accept that.”

“You deserve better.”

“So do you.” You replied back. Levi glared at you once again.

“How can you say that shit?”

“Because you’re saying it so why not?” You shrugged then got up to pour yourself that tea you swore it was cold by now. Levi’s eye scanned down to your body how it hid underneath his white shirt. When you would lift to reach something it exposed some of your bare flesh underneath. He held his breath for a moment.

“I just
hope this is what you want.” His voice spoke. You didn’t turn around. Your eyes glanced down at your cup you were holding. Your ring finger was empty but the silver band stood on your nightstand with your glass of water that was empty now. Levi would always bring you a glass of water before bed.

“I want to spend my life with you, Levi. We’re at peace now. You’re at peace. You deserved this. You risked your life so many times. Everyday it’s a struggle for you to live with what happened. But we can do it together, just trust me?”

You turned with glossy eyes staring back over to him. He used his strength to stand up on his own for a moment. Then he made his way over to you. Once he was close enough, he placed his hand on your cheek just studying your face.

“I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings
I’m just scared to lose you.” He confessed not trying to make eye contact with you. You placed your hand on his cheek and stroked it with your thumb. You stroked over the scars left behind by the stitches on his face you did for him. “I don’t know what I would do if I ever lost you.”

“I survived to live a life with you, Levi.”

You whispered then leaned forward to place your lips against his. His arm wrapped around your waist to bring you closer to his body. His lips moved against yours passionately. He pushed his body against yours causing your lower back to press against the counter. You let out a shaky breath when he broke the kiss then started to kiss along your neck. His fingers trailed down to the buttons on your shirt. Just when you were going to close your eyes and enjoy his lips sucking on your skin you were interrupted.

“Mommy? Daddy?”

You both pulled away at the same time to see a groggy toddler with messy dark hair all over the place. He hugged his stuffed bear tightly with his other arm.

“Hi baby.” You greeted him softly making. Levi straighten your shirt making sure the buttons were still in tact.

“What are you doing up, hm?” Levi asked him. The toddler frowned with his gray eyes half open.

“I wanna sleep with you and mama.” He made grabby hands towards him. He shook his head.

“Sorry kid, you have to go sleep in your bed like a big boy.” Your son sniffed and his big gray eyes began to water. Of course you were a sucker but you didn’t expect for Levi to be the one who caved in. “Tsk. Fine. Just for tonight.” Levi grabbed his cane and began to walk back into your bedroom. The little boy’s eyes beamed, making you giggle quietly. You brought the two cups to the sink thinking you were in the clear.

“Clean those damn cups.” Levi’s voice echoed from the bedroom.

You sucked your teeth with an eye roll.

“I’ll clean them in the morning.” You entered the bedroom seeing Levi already in bed. He leaned over to bring his son into bed. He snuggled up against his father, sighing happily feeling his warmth. You went over to your side on the bed to lay next to your son.

Levi always spoke about not wanting children. You didn’t have a clear answer if you wanted them or not. Some days you did but bringing them in a world like this wasn’t fair either. But finding out you were pregnant on your wedding day was a surprise. It meant you were pregnant during the fight that stopped the rumbling.

It was a miracle the child growing inside of you survived. But he’s a fighter like his father.

Asher Levi Ackerman.

A fortunate blessing for you both.

You leaned against the headboard stroking Asher’s hair as his eyes began to close.

“He looks just like you.” You whispered to Levi as you moved some of Asher’s dark hair out of his face. He smiled a bit.

“You think so?”

“Everyone says it. He looks nothing like me.”

“But he acts like you. A brat.”

You reached over to shove him playfully. It made him chuckle.

“Sleep, name. We have a long day at the shop tomorrow.”

“Fuck me.” You mumbled under your breath with a groan.

“Maybe tomorrow.”

Levi laid down and closed his eyes hearing you giggle quietly before drifting back to sleep. You laid down staring at your son and husband cuddling with one another. You could tell Levi’s nightmare was over for the night. You soon drifted into a deep slumber.

And yes, you did forget to wash the teacups in the sink

But Levi washed them before opening the tea shop for the day but he did remember to scold you about it.

your seatbelt was tightly tucked into a lock that held your cautionary option together. levi, on the other hand, was loosened around his chest for comfort as he held the leather steering wheel with his left hand—holding yours with his right.

you were slowly drifting off in the car, for you had a long day with your lover. you both did all sorts of wonderful things today: went to a local cafe, went tea tasting (with levi staying there for the longest), went to a local all you can eat buffet, went to the mall to get some more clothes (which levi eyed you in constantly). it was a wonderful day. you wish you could go out more, but as soon as tiredness struck your eyes, levi decided that he had to end the day there.

"love," he began, slowly rubbing the skin on your hand, "we're almost there." you grumbled in a response, slowly blinking your eyes open to see his handsome face illuminated in the street lights that came on after 8:30PM.

you rubbed your eyes open with your right, not letting go of his calloused hand that was holding yours tightly. "how long was i out for?" you asked him, sitting up from your current position.

he shrugged at the statement, truly not knowing how long you dozed off. "as soon as i put you in the car, you were asleep," he said, still rubbing your hand in a gentle gesture; tight circles slowly forming into small hearts.

you pressed your head against the windows to see lights illuminating the street, coming in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. you grinned at the sight and levi caught onto that. he loved seeing you amazed at certain things, but he would never admit it straight to your face. he just loves admiring your face up so close, seeing the emotions you display; especially when you plaster a big smile on your face.

as you started to drift off to sleep again, a familiar hill came to your attention. you had arrived at home, your safe haven where you and levi live together, admiring each other's company.

you yawned as levi unlocked the doors to open the trunk. "let me help you," you said, stretching your arms out from your present slumber.

"no baby, it's okay," he said, placing a kiss on your temple, "let me take care of it." and with that, he began taking out the groceries and continuous bags out of the car.

you didn't want to take his 'no' as an answer, so you decided to get some dresses out of the trunk. levi walked outside, seeing that you were disobeying his response. he knew you didn't take no as an answer, he admired that also.

as both of you finished putting the groceries and mall items inside of the house, levi offered something. "shall we take a drive this fine night?" you chuckled, "levi, it's eleven o'clock, it's late." he shrugged and took your hand into his calloused ones—rough from all the battles he's won, and some he lost.

"just a quick stroll, i promise." he said, pulling you in for a quick kiss. he guided you to the car, unlocking both driver and passenger doors as he leaned in to open your side.

"such a gentlemen," you said, shifting your weight into the car enough for you to get comfortable. he quickly scurried over to the opposite side of the vehicle and opened his side.

as he climbed in, he started the car and put it in reverse; beams of light coming through the car from a familiar screen that guided him. levi shifted the gears of the car, his slender fingers sliding against the gear stick, switching from 'R' to 'D' and lightly pressing his foot on the gas pedal.

you leaned back against the gentle headset that levi installed for your comfort. "what a lovely night out," you said, looking over at levi for a response. he nodded, "it is."

as he was pulling out of the neighborhood, he let his right hand rest on your thigh, gentle circles forming against the supple skin. you grinned at the gesture, intertwining your fingers with his.

as you were about to trace each finger with yours—wanting to feel the calloused skin of his, wanting to feel every scar he gained from his battles—you were distracted by a beam of light entering the car windows.

you looked out in amazement, putting both hands on the car window like a little child admiring the arcade. levi groaned at the sudden suspension of his lover's contact.

"pretty," you said to yourself, loud enough so levi could hear. "just like you," he mumbled, turning your attention to him.

your eyes meeting his gray ones for a brief second. "so handsome," you said, complimenting him, running your fingers along his jawline. he kissed your palm, enjoying the brief contact his lips had with your skin.

"levi," you began, "that tickles." you giggled. levi chuckled as well.

you both sat back in amusement, staring up at the lights—levi adjusting his chair so he could get more comfortable.

he let go of the steering wheel only to put the car in autopilot, landing a kiss on your lips. "i love you so much," he says, expecting a response. you giggled, "i love you too, silly," you said, kissing him back.

as he pulled away from the kiss, levi turned off autopilot and began to drive home. you enjoyed his company, and he sure enjoyed yours.

Levi x OC (reads like a reader insert i just hate the look of y/n, feel free to insert yourself)

Levi X OC (reads Like A Reader Insert I Just Hate The Look Of Y/n, Feel Free To Insert Yourself)

she is the most ill mannered, crude, and selfish woman i have ever met.. and god i love her for it. i don’t love her in spite of these flaws.. no, i love her because of her flaws. no matter how mean and cold she seems to the world she always has a way of surprising even herself, with how kind and loving she can be to me
i don’t know what i did to gain the favor of the universe for being allowed to love her but i can’t question it, not for a second.. as long as the invisible laws of the universe allow me to worship her, i will.

i live and i die by her piercing glares, the dip in her hips, those lips that spew the smartest of remarks, and her beautifully complicated and analytical mind.

she might hate me right now but i will happily live with her hatred as long as she is safe and breathing. fuck, i don’t know if it was fate or plain luck that allowed me to get there in time. i don’t even know what it was that came over me, it was like my mind and body switched to auto pilot.. not a single thought in my mind just my body reacting out of pure instinct, knowing exactly when, and where to strike to prevent her unconscious body from being crushed.

I know she told me not to come, i should be securing a safe route for the evacuees to escape on.. but i would gladly let every single person in that group face their deaths as long as it means that she lives. my moral compass has been shot straight to hell and i couldn’t care less. she will hate me forever but i already made my peace with that fact before i decided to act.

thankfully Hange’s team found the evacuees and led them to safety, maybe the fact that those people are still breathing will save me from her wrath, but that is nothing but wishful thinking on my end. i will still be here by her side until she wakes
waiting for my punishment whatever it may be. will she even be able to stand the sight of me? gods, i don’t know i guess only time will tell.

————————————-

clink clink clink

gods what is that infernal noise?

finally stirring from her peaceful unconscious state, reality hit Ava like a ton of bricks before even opening her eyes.

springing into an upright position trying to figure out where the hell she is, her line of sight lands directly onto Levi, holding a tea cup sitting in a small wooden chair.

Levi?

how in gods name is Levi here? he was ordered the secure a safe route for the evacuees.

A knowing look settled onto her face.

Levi did not follow through with his orders. no, he chose to disobey a direct order.

night air

levi x reader

Night Air

summary: you’ve been seeing Levi for a long time but you’ve grown tired of not knowing how he feels

tags: angst but it’s rewarded

———————————————————————

the night air was crisp on your skin. thankfully you thought to drag the quilt off of Levi’s bed on your way out the window.

this was your favorite spot, the shingled roof right outside of Levi’s chamber window had the best view of the night sky.

he’s probably looking for you right about now but you couldn’t bring yourself to care.

god.

you were just to tired of playing this game with him, never knowing what he is thinking or how he feels. you knew he had his reasons to keep his guard up, but none of his reasons had anything to do with you.

your done. you have officially given up on Levi.

as soon as you concluded that thought a throat clears behind you,

“ahem.. so this is where you’ve been hiding out, i should have known”

you don’t bother turning to face him.

you know exactly who it is, you would recognize that voice anywhere.. that voice you have grown to love so much.

a puzzled look settles on Levi’s face as he climbs out the window to take a seat next to you.

“don’t.”

“don’t what?” he says as he takes a seat next to you.

you finally turn to face him, just seeing that familiar stoic gaze almost makes you falter over your words.

“just
i just don’t want to see you right now” wrapping your arms around your knees bringing them to your chest to feel a sense of security.

“you do know that you broke into my room and stole my quilt right”

“yes well i can’t get this view anywhere else” you say as you lay your chin on top of your knees refusing to meet his hard gaze

“your angry with me” he says flatly trying to decipher the look on your face

“so perceptive” you said already having grown tired of the conversation

“tch. alright” he says as he quickly stands dragging you up with him.

“hey! what the fuck!” you say as he drags you back in through his bedroom window

swiftly bringing you to the bed setting you on the edge and kneeling between your legs.

why does he look so worried? you think.

you’ve never seen his face contort into such a position.

“tell me.”

“what?”

“tell me why you are angry” he says as he places his palms on top of your knees.

you take a quick breath in, not expecting this reaction out of him.

his brows furrow waiting for your response.

“i’m tired Levi, fuck i’m so tired. i can’t keep doing this. i can’t keep going through my days not knowing what we are, or how you even feel about me” you say as the moonlight pours in through the window. you feel tears welling up behind your eyes. you quickly close your eyes trying to prevent them from falling.

a knowing look settles on Levi’s face as he quickly stands gathering your hands in his. you finally look up at him with tear filled vison.

Levi let’s out a strangled breath his next words are going to be difficult to get out.

“im sorry, fuck. i am such an idiot”

your tear filled gaze still on him as he looks down at his hands tangled with yours.

“i’m bad with words, but that’s no excuse. i’m sorry i should have told you a long time ago how i feel.”

he lets out another strangled breath as he runs his thumb over your knuckles.

“i uh.. we’ll i love you”

the words fell over you so quickly you had no time to understand their meaning.

you continue to stare at Levi as your tears finally fall.

“fuck. i love you. i love you.” he says as he releases your hands to cup your face.

you notice a single tear falling onto Levi’s cheek as he quickly gathers you up in his arms.

you finally understand. he loves you too.

both your your lips meet in a desperate attempt to make up for the lost time.

i can’t lose you

levi x reader

I Cant Lose You

tags: canon universe // well established relationship // canon typical violence // swearing // sweet boy levi // sad boy levi // levi loves the shit out of you // star crossed lovers type beat

word count: 1.3k

————-

you and levi were drinking tea in his quarters when the news hit.

“wall rose has been breached!” a cadet yelled through the door.

levi was the first to his feet, stalking over to you grabbing your hands with a desperate look in his eyes.

“this is going to be bad okay” his grip tightened on your hands.

“no matter what, i need you to stay close. keeping you alive is my number one priority next to killing those giant fuckers where they stand.”

———

shit

they were everywhere.

titans poured in through the gaping hole in wall rose.

all of levi squad watched the carnage taking place from a rooftop above the streets waiting on the captain's orders.

levi’s cloak flapped in the wind as he mentally strategized what to do next.

all you could do is watch the wheels turning in his head.

the captain finally turned to address you all, his face was unreadable as ever.

“eren i need you to use your titan’s hardening ability to plug that hole, just like the trost mission. the rest of us will make sure you make it there unscathed. this is your one job eren don’t fuck it up.”

eren nodded in response.

levi squad saluted their captain, “yes sir!”

the soldiers took to the streets below using their ODM gear, leaving you and levi standing alone on the rooftop.

your captain’s face grew softer now that it was just the two of you.

levi reached around you, grabbing you by the small of your back pulling you into his embrace.

“remember what i said” a concerned look fell upon his face as he looked into your eyes earnestly. “stay close no matter what. i can’t lose you.. not yet
 not here”

levi didn’t allow you to respond, his grip tightened around your waist as the hook shot out of his gear propelling both of you through the street.

the two of you quickly separated, taking out the first titan you came into contact with.

your gear now being put to use, you sent your hook into the next titan’s shoulder blade as you flung by slicing its nape.

levi called to you from atop a nearby titans head,

“he’s on the move!” pointing to eren now in his titan form.

“let’s go!” he shouted as he initiated his gear.

you quickly followed suit and propelled yourself forward, falling in line next to levi.

from your birds eye view you both noticed the hoards of titans flowing in through the breached wall.

fuccccck this is all going to shit real quick

the whole first line of defense was taken out, eren was now going toe to toe with the swarm of titans.

“goddamn it” levi said as you both propelled through the air.

“we have to make sure eren makes it to the wall”

levi cocked his head in your direction, locking eyes with you, “remember what i said
you know what to do.”

you nodded. without a word you used your gear to skip from roof to roof in the direction of where the front line was just wiped out.

levi took the quicker route in the street below using the buildings stone walls to swing himself forward at a fierce speed.

levi made it to the pack of titans surrounding eren before you, slicing through nape after nape while you were not far behind.

you were one rooftop away from the carnage when the reinforcement team arrived.

thank the gods

you heard the whizzing noise of odm gear as you entered the fold with a flock of soldiers at your flank.

you quickly shot your spear grip through eren’s giant bicep, slicing through the muscle like a sword slicing through flesh.

using his massive form as leverage to fling yourself forward, flying feet first into a titans massive eyeball almost completely crippling its vision.

i’ll apologize to eren for that later. you thought laughing as you tried to pull your foot from the titans eye.

shit shit i’m in deep you quickly realized.

you hastily jabbed at the sludge beneath your feet with both swords not gaining an inch of leeway. you knew you were seconds away from the titan plucking you out of its eye.

sweat formed on your forehead as panic set in.

moments before the titan plucked you from its eye, memories you shared with levi started to flash before your eyes. you thought of all of the calm mornings you spent together, how the sun would pour through his window and how he would kiss your forehead when your eyes fluttered open, awakening from your blissful slumber.

“mmmm.. good morning sweet girl” he would say.

a single tear fell from your eye as the titan pulled you free from its eye. time moved so slow as it smashed your body under its fierce grip and lifted you high in the air.

you thought of levi’s words to you

“i can’t lose you.. not yet
 not here”

not yet
 not here
you thought as you became completely weightless.

the giant titan flung your lifeless bloodied form far and high like it was swatting a fly.

you didn’t feel the impact when your body landed on a nearby roof, your mind was already halfway to the other side, your soul was almost ready to cross over.

——

after tearing down dozens of titans, levi and the reinforcements were able to give eren an opening to plug the hole in wall rose using his hardening ability.

everyone took an exhausted sigh of relief, at the end of the hard fought mission.

levi turned in circles in search of you. you were nowhere to be found.

bodies of steaming dead titans surrounded him

no, no where is she?! he thought in a panic.

without notifying anyone, levi quickly leaped into action initiating his ODM gear, launching himself upwards above the rooftops.

levi saw a body atop of a roof a single block away.

no it can’t be. please don’t be her. he thought as he neared the sight of your bloody body.

levi disengaged his gear landing hard on the roof; he had never ran faster in his life.

finally reaching your lifeless body levi sank to his knees next to you. in complete delirium levi grabbed at your limp body pulling your lifeless form too his chest.

“no no no please no” he chanted as his body shook against yours.

tears fell freely from levi’s eyes as he lifted your head up, placing a kiss to your lips.

this wasn’t supposed to happen. no. you were supposed to survive this together. you were supposed to tell your children and grandchildren all the stories about how the two of you survived a world full of shit and destruction together.

“i told you to stay close! you weren’t supposed to go yet!” he screamed.

“no..no.. not you. not you sweet girl” levi said as he wept into your neck.

you were nowhere, floating in the cold dark lifeless void when you saw a faint light.

well this must be it. i hope levi’s okay. you thought as warmth washed over you.

for a split second you thought you could hear levi’s voice calling out to you like a sweet siren song luring you to shore.

i hope he knows how much i loved him.

blinking away tears levi placed two fingers on your neck desperately feeling for a pulse.

eyes wide, levi shouted. “MEDIC MEDIC I NEED A MEDIC NOW!” he gripped your limp body tighter waiting for help.

you had a pulse, it was faint but it filled levi with hope nonetheless.

——-

levi held your hand the whole wagon ride back to the castle while you were unconscious, and sat by your bed for days waiting
 hoping for you to wake.

it had been three days and you still hadn’t come conscious yet.

levi couldn’t sleep a wink as the days passed, he grew more and more worried as he held your hand waiting for you to show any sign of life.

your body felt so heavy as your eyes fluttered open instantly finding levi’s gaze.

tears welled in levi’s eyes once again as he cupped your cheek.

“hey sweet girl, i’ve been waiting for you”

Could I Request A Levi X Reader Drabble Where Reader Always Overthinks And Has Anxiety But Doesn't Tell

tw’s & tags: talks of dealing with anxiety // levi comforts u :) <3

a/n: was gonna do a modern au but this felt really fitting for the canonverse

you knew levi already had so much to worry about on his own, you never wanted to bother him with your issues. it was always the worst after a mission, it’s like your body doesn’t understand that the fighting is over, and your nervous system just keeps pumping adrenaline throughout your body.

you made a b-line straight for your quarters as soon as the horses were settled, not waiting for a debriefing. you hoped that the solitude of your bed chamber would calm you, but your chest only got tighter, as your hands kept at their persistent shaking.

you sank to the floor, while anxiety consumed your mind. with tears streaming down your face, you buried your face into your lap, forming into a ball of emotions on the floor.

your whole body was shaking when you heard footsteps approaching your door, you knew exactly who those footsteps belonged to. everything about levi was very distinct, including the sounds his boots made against the stone floor.

shit. shit. shit. he can’t see me like this. i can’t be just another burden to him.

he knocked with one knuckle as his voice came through the door, “it’s me, can i come in?” his voice carried a softer tone than usual.

you attempted to even out your voice, “no! i’m not decent!” you cringed when your voice came out thick with emotion.

levi didn’t heed your warning, stepping inside anyway. immediately sinking to his knees in front of you, levi pried your hands off your face, ignoring your resistance. the last thing you wanted was for levi to see you in the state that you were in.

your tear filled eyes finally met his worried gaze, levi felt some relief now that he could see your face, he so desperately wanted to make you feel better no matter what the cause for your distress was.

levi reached for your hand, and brought it to cradle his face while placing his hand on top, in an attempt to ground you back into reality.

you tried to pull your hand away, feeling deeply embarrassed by allowing yourself to be seen in such a vulnerable state. levi’s hand didn’t budge, holding yours in place still cradling his face.

“please just go, i really don’t want you to see me like this.” you said as you clamped your eyes shut, in attempt to withhold your tears.

levi shifted your whole body so that your back could rest on his chest, his arms held you tightly. “shhh.. i’m not going anywhere.” levi placed a kiss atop your head, “i’m here, i’m here” he said as he softly rocked your body in his arms.

finally feeling a sense of safety, you relaxed into his embrace.

perfect stranger

Perfect Stranger

word count: 503 short n sweet <3

the train was packed today, every seat had a passenger, and standing space was very limited. you felt like a canned sardine being stuffed body to body in the train car. you tried to grip onto the overhead handrail when the train lurched forward, you lost your balance causing you to fall into the person behind you.

thankfully the person caught you before you hit the ground, you knew it would’ve been a hard fall.

strong arms wrapped around your waist, “don’t worry, i got you” you took a sharp breath in, feeling dazed by the masculine voice speaking lowly into your ear. the man helped you right yourself, still keeping a steady hand on your waist as you got readjusted.

feeling completely mortified, you turned to face the man to apologize for your clumsiness. all coherent thoughts came to a complete halt when your gaze finally met his. you were in absolute awe of the beautiful stranger that kept a protective hand over your waist. the man had sharp masculine features while carrying an air of elegance at the same time, the combination created an intoxicating aura that made your head spin.

the man raised a brow, staring at you quizzically as he tried to read your face. you stared into his grey eyes still not being able to form words, time seemed to slow around the two of you.

the train reached its next stop, many passengers shuffled out of the sliding doors allowing you more space to breathe.

his words broke you out of your daze, “hey, are you okay?”

you tried to laugh off your embarrassment, “oh! ha, yeah i’m okay, sorry for falling all over you. i’m usually more careful than that.”

a smile tugged at the corner of the man's lips, “no apologies necessary, it was so trouble at all.” his hand left your side as he reached for his discarded book on the ground. “though, you did make me lose my place, and it was just getting good” he said teasingly, as he flipped through the pages.

you laughed at his jest, “well in that case i can assure you, an apology is definitely necessary. let me buy you a coffee, that would surely make up for it.”

the man looked at you thoughtfully, as you prayed that he would take you up on your offer.

time seemed to slow once again as you waited for his response.

the train jutted forward again, on its way to the next stop. the man instinctively grabbed onto your waist afraid that you would lose your balance. you eyes went wide as you fell into his embrace, his lips hovered just above yours.

“i’m not big on coffee, can we do tea instead?”

you let out a sigh of relief, “tea works for me.”

the man hummed at your response.

_____

the man guided you off the train at the next stop, “before we share a cup of tea, i suppose i should introduce myself properly, i’m levi. and you are?”
