Guilty Pleasure (Sketchtember 2024 - Day 9)

Guilty Pleasure (Sketchtember 2024 - Day 9)

[The Judge]

Ismaire: I guess it's about time I dragged Darr and Ashe into a sweet prompt together, huh?

Let this be proof that, at least much later in the story, Darr finally lets his death grip off the gas a little and learns to relax… sometimes. Almost exclusively with Ashe, and still not as much as he should, but he's learning. He still tends to feel like anything done for personal pleasure is a 'guilty' pleasure, but the two of them just love jamming together so much.

I mean, he painted those lilies on Ashe's guitar for him, for hell's sake. He's so dumb sometimes. Still, progress~

If you get this, answer w/ three random facts about yourself and send it the last five blogs in your notifs. Anon or not, doesn’t matter, let’s get to know the person behind the blog <3

As this uses the word “random,” I will try to be random, accordingly.

I currently have four instruments in my house: a piano, one plastic recorder, and decorative, dusty flamenco castanets and a replica bagpipe (gaita) on the wall. (Also, a strange thing I'm willing to bet people will find random: there is a miniature model hórreo (type of granary) in our dining room. It only takes up a bureau surface in a corner, but even if it did take up a lot of space, it wouldn't matter much because our dining table is covered in stacks of paperwork, so we can't actually eat there, unless we cleared it off for guests, haha.)

Rosemary Wells’ picture books were some of my favorites as a kid.

“Speech" incoming.

I had an interesting conversation yesterday that reminded me of something I think about every so often—I absolutely love the Hold Someone to Their Exact Words Exploitive Loophole as a trope and am a bit of a grammar enthusiast. However, I would never go into law. (And I understand having varying dialects and cultural differences. I think some people irl, even those with mostly standard "correct" speech, are just bored by grammatical/structural/rhetorical features, so I don't get to talk about it often.)

Fun fact: if you remove certain modal verbs from your speech and use declarative statements, you may automatically sound more confident in what you’re talking about. I don’t know if you can bluff with this trick/tip, but maybe someone out there will find it useful.

Second fun fact: To anyone, not even just English language learners, the native speakers I've observed lately often don't use the subjunctive (the hypothetical tense) or the right forms of adverbs when they should. It's surprisingly common, using phrasing like "was" instead of "were” in if-then statements. That said, maybe some people don't know or go for authenticity in oral speech over "correctness." And ultimately, there's nothing wrong with that. Breaking the rules for expressive or artistic purposes is fine!

However, I do have an example that bothers me because I haven't found a way around it. It's when people say: [omitted: "Get it done] quick!"

"Quick" used as a second person command works so well because it has a hard, monosyllabic impact, but it's wrong. If I'm not mistaken, "Quickly" would be the correct form. Why can't I be dramatic and correct at the same time, language?

The BBC Merlin Sountrack had NO RIGHT to go that hard.

Listen to this! 2:10 - 2:41 of ‘Merlin buries lancelot’ has me in literal CHILLS. The grief and loss and magic and love that crescendo conveys is just so extraordinary I have to go and be alone for a while.

y’all know how to play any instruments?

James: Does Edward count as an instrument?

Edward: Why am I getting married to you?

Camille: I know a little piano, but that’s it.

Gordon: We work on a very busy railway and are up early till the day is through. We don’t have time for that sort of thing.

Percy: But we can whistle!

Camille: I guess that kind of counts… It does make a noise.

Thomas: Does it though?

Percy: Well, I like to think it does!

Instruments The Boys Would Love To Try Out Since They Were Kids:

Leo would love to try any traditional Japanese instrument. But his all time favorite he would love to play the most, would be the Shakuhachi. It is a traditional japanese flute made out of bamboo that echoes beautifully when it is being played. When Leo was just a young boy, he would see a Japanese performers play the flute during japanese festivals in New york city through the sewer hole, and it helps relax his nerves from his brothers constant babbling and gives him inner peace when he meditates, and even wanting to have one and learn how to play it. He hopes someday he'll be able to get one so he can learn as many traditional Japanese songs as he would like to during his free time after night patrols. 😄🥰

Instruments The Boys Would Love To Try Out Since They Were Kids:

Donnie would of course play piano as a young lad With one of those old toy pianos he would find in rubbage in the sewers. but out of curiosity, his young smart mind would always wanted to try the saxophone. The way the fingers move smoothly on those keys, and the sound of it as he hears it from jazz bands on the streets of New York over the years always have him sway his head in satisfaction. Now as a young adult since he is a genius, he would end up making one out of old saxophone parts from trash bins and modernize it, and even up sizing the keys since his large fingers would be too big for regular saxophone notes to play on. He would jazz his heart out with that instrument he calls a masterpiece when he isn't busy with his work at his lab obviously. 🎷🎶

Instruments The Boys Would Love To Try Out Since They Were Kids:

Raph would enjoy the tuba as much as the next person, but there is one instrument he would love the living hell out of, and that would be the Electric guitar. As a child, He would sneak out of the lair while his family is asleep, and would go to punk rock bands performing at concerts enjoying the sweet sound of electric guitar solos which made him love punk rock music, and even wanting to learn the instrument itself, even to this very day. He would get lessons from Casey who would actually own an electric guitar himself, and Raph would definitely ask to borrow it on weekends so he can play it when he isn't busy working his muscles out or going on missions or basketball games with his brothers. 😎🎸🎛

Instruments The Boys Would Love To Try Out Since They Were Kids:

As we all know, since Mikey was just a little kid, he would always play with his drumset whenever he has free time to do so. But one particular and strange instrument that he has discovered years later would actually peak his interest in wanting to try it Really badly. It is called the Hang Drum. A large metal drum that sounds like a bell to Mikey, is his go to instrument. The look of the drum made him believe it looks like a turtle shell, but made out of metal and can be used as a musical instrument. He discovered it one day when he would sit at the edge of a building and staring into the distance of the streets during the day, until in the corner of his baby blue eyes was a street performer playing the hang drum itself. The beat of the drum would make Mikey jam to it. It's like the instrument is speaking to him. The best part is, he would just be able to use his hands instead of drum sticks to play it. He would ask Donnie to make one for him, but sadly Donnie wouldn't have the actual tools to create one. So Mikey would have to ask April to buy one for him despite of it being nearly $10,000 having it being one of the most expensive and rare instruments to own. Once Mikey does get one though, ooooh boy he would play it non stop especially overnight. 😆

Okay, so these are things we know:

Music is wiggling air

Color is wiggling light

Artist and musicians are magicians of the wiggle

Now may I present to you a weird realization:

The Wiggles

They sing

The play instruments

They wear colors

They are the ultimate magicians of the natural world. It was right under our noses the whole time, and I never thought about it.

Okay, So These Are Things We Know:

Also, if anyone finds the original poster of these big facts let me know :)

Strum Of The Strings

image

There goes the melody

That tugs at the strings of hearts

Craves the companionship of nobody

A beckoning of the calm it imparts

With backs bent double over stress

And mind laden with worry

A note to elate from the distress

Disguised as melancholy’s place of bury

As the sweet tantalizing of the strum

Promises tunes soothing to the soul

No matter what tongue it comes from

So competent of making a part whole

An ocean of emotion you may feel

A thousand feelings to the forth it brings

To hear and to heal

There’s nothing you can’t express with the strum of the strings

As a history nerd and a fantasy/sci-fi geek, I have long been enamored by the history of the fantasy world of George R.R. Martin’s The Song of Ice and Fire. That world and its myriad of cultures, religions, magic and dragons, with its intrigues and the feudal families’ vying for power, is almost a faint echo of medieval Europe, if not almost mirroring the mudslinging political families in Philippine politics. And so when I saw this video of Filipino musicians performing Game of Thrones’ OST on facebook last weekend, in anticipation of the release of Season 7′s Episode 1: Dragonstone last Monday, I got all the more excited.

The musicians are none other than Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino (Kontra-GaPi), the resident Ethnic Music and Dance Ensemble of the UP Diliman’s College of Arts and Letters. And the musical instruments they use come from some of the indigenous peoples of the Philippines, which are almost similar in shape and size with the other instruments used in some parts of Southeast Asia (a link that certifies our common bond with our Asian neighbors).

As Filipinos, it is unfortunate that most of us are not familiar with our own musical instruments, as much as (let’s say) a Westerner is familiar with the piano, the flute or the cello, etc. Just trying to study them and appreciate them, even if we don’t know how to play them, dignify these instruments and the peoples who produced music out of them. Indeed, music is a big chunk of our Filipino identity that we still try to redefine. And these musical instruments are evidence of cultures that were already flourishing in the islands even before the Spanish colonization. These instruments are also a testament to the enduring cultural diversity and richness that we have in the Philippines–truly a “nation of many peoples.”

I took the liberty of taking a screenshot of each of these instruments on the Kontra-GaPi music video in order to practice my familiarity.

1. Kulintang

While Kulintangs are widespread in Philippine cultural shows, the real kulintangs are found in the Maranao and Maguindanao communities (even in other parts of Southeast Asia), where a friend described it to me as like hearing drops of water hit a thousand crystals. Beautiful and tingling to the ears. Beginning in the 12th century “Kulintang” has come to denote an ensemble of instruments, almost similar to the Gamelan ensemble in Bali and Java in Indonesia. Hence, the video featured here a Kulintang Ensemble.

image

2. Agung

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) defines it as “knobbed metal gong of the Philippines used in various communal rituals. Suspended in the air by rope or metal chains, the musical instrument is also employed by some indigenous groups as a means to announce community events, and as an indicator of the passage of time.”

image

3. Kubing

It is a bamboo-made jaw harp in the Philippines, used by Maguindanaon, Maranao, and other non-Moro ethnic groups in Mindanao and Palawan.

image

3. Dabakan

The one used in the music video seem to be a variation of the Dabakan, a goblet shaped drum, usually with inlaid wood carving of okir (intricate patterns common to Maranao design). The drumhead is usually made of goat or carabao skin. It is the only non-gong instrument in the five main instruments of the Kulintang ensemble.

image

4. Gabbang

Our counterpart to the xylophone, ours is made of bamboo. Ethnic groups that usually use this are the Yakans, the Palaw’ans and the Tausugs. Kontra-GaPi seem to play two variations of the Gabbang.

image
image

5. Gandingan

It is a set of four hanging gongs, as compared to Agung which may have one gong or two. Gandingan gongs are also thinner than Agung. It is usually seen in the Kulintang ensemble as the second main instrument that follows the melody of Kulintang. The gong can also be used by the Maguindanaons to communicate to each other especially in long distances. It is said that the tune produced by the gong are similar to the Maguindanao language.

image

6. Kulintang (small)

It is a set of 8 brass/iron plates, and is tuned and played like the regular-size Kulintang. It is considered as a practice instrument for beginners due to its small size, but can also be played by advanced kulintang players. It is common among the Maranao.

Did I miss anything? Don’t hesitate to reblog and add to the identification of these awesome instruments. :)

Inktober 2019: Day 23 - Pentel Pocket Brush And Ink Wash (G-pen For The Strings)

Inktober 2019: day 23 - Pentel pocket brush and ink wash (G-pen for the strings)

Here’s another character we haven’t met before, although you may have seen his eye if you’ve been here a while. Jothan is a courtesan at the palace of the Dai Empress, with music among his specialist skills. His people never show their open mouths, so he wears a veil if he’s been ask to sing as well as play.

(The harp design isn’t final, I think it should be a bit less symmetrical.)

A Visual Guide for Drawing Flutes

Many artists like drawing their favorite characters playing flutes. And sometimes, there are errors. Especially when not all artists are musicians.

Well… I have 2 years total of flute experience. Some months of learning, some months of playing for fun, and 1 school year of marching band. But i haven't play in about 10 years. I play concert flute. The meTallic kind. Not the wooden/ bamboo kind. But the hands are the same.

Flutists/ Flautists , feel free to reblog and add your comments. Especially if you have more experience.

excuse my pajamas.

FOR VISUAL GUIDE: On my left hand is a red wristband/ bracelet. On my right hand is a black wristband/ bracelet and black paper claws.

First! I hold flute in set/ attention position (as known in marching band).

Me, wearing pajamas and sunglasses to cover my face, holding my flute in set position. The instrument is perpendicular to the ground (or parallel with the body) and the mouthpiece is level with my mouth. My left hand is wearing a red wristband/ bracelet. My right hand is wearing a black wristband/ bracelet and adorned with black paper claws.

My left hand is wearing a red wristband/ bracelet. My right hand is wearing a black wristband/ bracelet and adorned with black paper claws.

End Image ID]

NOTICE: My left hand is positioned above my right hand. this makes going into playing position easier.

Second! I hold flute in playing/ horns up position. This is what the artists are more interested in, since we are drawing characters playing the flutes.

Me, wearing pajamas and sunglasses to cover my face, holding my flute in playing/ horns up position. The instrument is parallel to the ground and the mouthpiece is touching my mouth. My left hand is wearing a red wristband/ bracelet. My right hand is wearing a black wristband/ bracelet and adorned with black paper claws.

End Image ID]

NOTICE: The flute is position on my right. My left arm is across my body. My left palm is facing in, the wall. My left hand is closer to my body. My right palm and fingers are facing out, toward you. My right hand is farther out away from my body.

This applies for any and all fandoms. I know that QSMP and Hetalia have characters who canonically play flutes. I originally made this post for the qsmp fandom.

HAVE FUN DRAWING!
