I yearned with such desperation for “freedom” that I became weak and tearful.
Dazai Osamu, No Longer Human

I might act like a nerd but white nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky and flowers of buffoonery by Dazai Osamu are finally here! so excited to read white nights again since I already listened to it from an audiobook.

Guess who picked the worst Junji Ito manga to read in public.

the stage of cramming where you turn off the rain sounds, take off the headphones, sit normally, and temporarily enter an alternate reality of sheer panic and hope whilst frantically consuming knowledge.
Fucked up theory.
So, Dazai and Atsushi are the main characters in the anime/manga. Akutagawa is chasing Dazai's recognition.
ALTHOUGH IN THE BIOGRAPHIES OF THE WRITERS EVERYTHING IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT: The writer Dazai Osamu greatly delighted Akutagawa Ryunosuke in his school years. When Ryunosuke committed suicide, Dazai became depressed, causing him to not concentrate on his lessons. This means that in the anime, the main character should have been Akutagawa according to logic, BUT this idea can be refuted: in the book No Human Longer the main character Yodzo (the prototype of the writer himself - Dazai Osamu) talked with his old friend about antonyms and synonyms. When it came to Crime and Punishment, Yodzo thought that the author, Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, put them as antonyms (opposite things). IN THE MOVIE THE DEAD APPLE, Fyodor Dostoevsky said, “I am a crime, I am a punishment, did you know that? Crime and Punishment BEST FRIENDS.” And in Russian dub he said, “I am a crime, I am a punishment, did you know that? Crime and Punishment ARE EQUALLY SAME.”
Apparently, Asagiri Kafka decided to cast Fyodor's main enemy as Dazai. And Dazai would try to refute Dostoevsky’s lies about his ability.

I have 6 papers due by Sunday. Today is Wednesday. I’ll update with more news

September 17, 2024
I have just finished reading "No Longer Human" by Osamu Dazai.
Outside, the autumn sun is shining warmly, and a cool breeze is blowing. With the "ber" months in queue..I’m excited for this beautiful season to unfold and the stacks of the books 📚.
I am ashamed to be human.
Those who genuinely believe humanity's first instinct is to be kind and good have not worked in customer service.
That's one of the most relatable things I've ever read.
i think one of the reasons punk means so much to me is that under the spikes and studs and safety pins is the same kid who sobbed violently every time he got in an argument, a kid who cared so much about the people around him that he kept asking questions. kept trying to make sense of things, even when it started to alienate him, because it wasn’t a simple disagreement to him, it was his whole life. something was fundamentally wrong with his brain that made him incapable of understanding the world the way the people around him did, so he was seen as selfish when all he ever wanted was to make everyone happy. and maybe when that kid grew up, he still had questions, and he never stopped trying to understand the world a little better. but he was also going to realize that he was never broken; he was hurt by a system that was. but he wouldn’t stop fighting for change, to make it a hell of a lot better for the other misfits and outcasts who felt like there wasn’t a place for them. he was going to stop caring so much how he was perceived for expressing himself and he was never going to let anyone make him feel like he didn’t belong. ever.
I thought, “As long as I can make them laugh, it doesn’t matter how, I’ll be alright. If I succeed in that, the human beings probably won’t mind it too much if I remain outside their lives. The one thing I must avoid is becoming offensive in their eyes: I shall be nothing, the wind, the sky.” My activities as jester, a role born of desperation, were extended even to the servants, whom I feared even more than my family because I found them incomprehensible.
Dazai Osamu, No Longer Human

I've been thinking about this reblog of yours for months and I finally figured out how to respond to it.
I went and read No Longer Human by Junji Ito and it was a very upsetting thing to go through. I don't think I can read it again. However, I came out of it thinking that Gege was probably inspired by it.
When Yozo is first introduced, I noticed that Takaba's backstory was very similar. Feeling isolated from others, he decided to become a clown to gain acceptance from others. (Citations in Image Captions)

And later when Yozo was caught "cheating" (it's in quotes because those women are child rapists), I noticed that her face was really similar to the one Higuruma's client made when he felt betrayed by the trial outcome.

There's probably a lot more to say about how themes surrounding CSA and suicide in this work are echoed in JJK, but I'm not able to make the post myself. No Longer Human is too far out of my comfort zone in terms of graphic depiction to delve into it deeper.
But you seem strong enough to handle it, so... Idk maybe run with this some more.
Ohhh this is so interesting! I could definitely read No Longer Human again - tbh I read Junji Ito's version years ago. This year I listened to the audio book and bought a copy - but it's like, a draft in the author's handwriting (bc I thought it would help me study Japanese and if I had an English translation that I'd read it on repeat lmao). But you're real for that - I forget how disturbed people tend to be trying to read through it, I'm sorry that was rough.
I did go back to read the reblog and idk how relevant all that was - I've reread the manga since and felt like, oh I might have been misremembering some things like Uraume - idk if they actually had a freeze response in ch. 219, since they did tell Yorozu to back off though it took a minute - but it's also interesting how their CT deals with ice. Like to have a fight response, they freeze others? It's so interesting but I can't be sure whether it's there at all. (ik that yap II inspired some more coherent posts, like how it influenced Choso's self-image, etc., I linked but didn't tag you back then bc I felt Annoying especially w heavy topics but I can definitely go back and find them if you'd like.)
On a twin peaks note (without spoiling it), I feel like it inspired jjk to some extent - I've been feeling like the last chapter will end the way s2 did. Or at least - with the weird dreamy themes, "we are the dreamer who dreams and who lives inside the dream", etc...
But you're right - Yozo and the others' reactions resemble more jjk characters than I would think to connect. Takaba's jokes are truly a shield... And now I have an excuse to read Junji Ito's version again? Thank u so much (also isn't it funny how September 28 Uzumaki airs and September 30 jjk ends?).
I think gege gets inspired by the most tragic stories, I wonder how much of that is accurate but I can't always be convinced otherwise.... Especially when anime / manga series that he's confirmed as influences often deal with autonomy in ways that I couldn't handle (Evangelion, the night beyond the tricornered window).
By the way - ik we've mentioned elfen lied before, but in the first episode, you know that coffee mug? How it looks like jjk foreshadowing? Even has snail head Mahito - cut off-, the baseball, Panda, the worm (also cut off).... and later the newborn babies that look just like Yuuji...

I swear that elfen lied, Kagewani, and banana fish influenced jjk. It seems so obvious w those, maybe Vampire Princess Miyu as well.
Sorry for getting off topic - I've been looking into why Momotaro keeps coming up in jujutsu kaisen, and in the end it came back full circle to that damn coffee cup. Invest in a baseball team? A zoo? I'm going insane.
All this to say - rereading Junji Ito's version and seeing if I notice similarities between manga panels is so exciting. Gege even made a note that he asked for permission before drawing - I think it was the Uzumaki CT - So we know he's a big fan of Junji Ito. And it seems like there is a rly good chance No Longer Human inspired him as well (though I feel like characters with similar traumas having similar reactions is inevitable to some extent, if they're written in a believable way, it should be clearer when I'm reading both stories in the same format) based on the stories he has officially referenced.
If you see this you’re legally obligated to reblog and tag with the book you’re currently reading
Seriously, thank you to whoever came up with the idea for homoerotic fanfic of dead authors of classic novels and poetry that probably didnt know each other and then wrote a whole series abt it. Bungo stray dogs is iconic.
Mori would hate asagiri for making him a pe**0 and would have hated how his and Yosanos friendship wasn't included. (They were really close friends) and hate him for giving everbody trauma.
Dazai would hate bsd dazai for the way he treated aku. (He was a big Fan of aku in real live)
Tanizakis and akus friendship also wasn't included in bsd.
Chuuya would have hated the bsd Fans who ship him with dazai and dazai would also hate them and cry because in real live they didn't got along AT ALL.
Yosano would like her character but dislike how mori is portrayed.
They would have hated the fanfics about them.
I can imagine some of them to just be confused too bc some Aren't at all like the IRL authors...
Imagine if the real bsd authors looked at what the Fandom is saying abt them. "Fem Nikolai has big boobs", if Gogol saw that he would have a stroke. Chuuya would be mad about people making fun if his height, because he actually was really short. Idk if Dazai would be ecstatic or even more suicidal after seeing that. Fyodor would definitely write a book anylising his character's philosophy and motivations. DONT GET ME STARTED ON SOUKOKU
I'm spending my me-money on books this month and I might regret it

No Longer Human is told in the form of notebooks left by Ōba Yōzō, a troubled man incapable of revealing his true self to others, and who, instead, maintains a facade of a hollow jester. The work is made up of three chapters, or "memoranda", which chronicle the life of Oba from his early childhood to his late twenties.
A book that made me sympathize with the character's hollowness and, after learning of the author’s life, understand the sentiment behind it. There is a reason why in Japan, and now the world, this book makes you feel understood. The raw emotions leave a tear in your eye, unable to escape. The emptiness, hollowness, the human experience of the troubled person, not wanting to present the reality but, by making a mask, protecting yourself from evil eyes. It is a great book for psychology analysis, considering what has happened to the main character.
With caution and understanding of the TW, to feel human, you should read No Longer Human.
