Reginald Hargreeves - Tumblr Posts
Something I find fascinating is that the show implies that Five was the odd one out among the children who Reginald did train, that he was one whose potential Reginald actually fostered but who he couldn't keep under control the way he did the other six.
Three seasons in, we have a pretty reasonable idea of what Reginald did to each of the children. Klaus and Ben were terrified of their powers and hated using them. Viktor was unaware of his, because Reginald kept him medicated and subdued. Diego was constantly being undermined and made to feel inferior to Luther, while Luther was both bolstered as a leader but also kept small and docile by Reginald through constant criticism. Allison used her powers to get away with things, using them indiscriminately to get what she wanted, and she remained content with that for a pretty long time, being the last one to leave the Academy, save for Luther. And Five was an arrogant child striving to push his power to new heights - he was not afraid of it, he relished what he could do and wanted to do more.
It seems like Five, different from the other children apart maybe from Allison, was not stifled in developing his powers, but instead was pushed by Reginald to develop both his powers and his mind, as he did need a substantial understanding of maths and physics to be able to apply them. Indications for this are littered throughout the seasons. Luther saying Five always thought himself better than them. The implication that Five would use his teleportation powers as much as possible as a kid. Reginald giving him five stars on his performance report. "Five cheated!" "He adapted." Reginald being fascinated first and foremost by Five's powers at the tiki bar. The implication that things got even worse in the household once Five had gotten lost.

The implication is very much there that Reginald treated Five differently, did not quite nip him in the bud like he did with most of his siblings, and once that had backfired spectacularly on him, he tightened the grip on the siblings that were left, making them even more miserable than they already were, a situation that spiraled further with Ben's death.
Reginald not keeping quite as tight a lid on Five led to Five being less afraid of him, more willing to openly rebel and defy him, a trait that keeps up all the way through the show. Letting Five's natural curiosity and thirst for knowledge develop what I assume to be reasonably uninhibited also meant that Five did not adhere to Reginald's authority as strongly, because he had an inherent trust in his own abilities that the other children did not have. And it went wrong for both Five and Reginald, with Five overestimating his own abilities and their long-term consequences and Reginald overestimating how obedient Five would be to him, and so Five got lost, never to come back in Reginald's lifetime.
For all intents and purposes, Five should have been Reginald's golden child. He is very powerful - which I think is the key reason of why Reginald treated him the way he did, someone who can control time and space can be useful in many different ways - and he had an inherent drive to explore and better his powers. But he never was, because Reginald could never really figure out how to fully control him. His influence is still stark, but Five is inherently unpredictable and adverse to authority. He genuinely rattles Reginald in every season at least once, and it's all because Reginald raised, as he so nicely put it, "an arrogant son of a bitch".
Just a small addendum about the comics, but this characterisation in the show is interesting to me especially because it is also in the comics, albeit in a much sharper way, like most things taken from the comics. There's the three attached pages from Dallas here below, which is genuinely one of my top three favourite scenes from the comics, it's so good and such clever foreshadowing while also nailing down the dynamic between Five and Reginald within just a few pages. In this passage from the final installment of Dallas, Reginald wants to present Five to brag to some fellow-minded rich dickheads, and Five sabotages it on purpose to embarrass him, and Reginald knows it. And it goes even further, with Gerard Way saying in an interview that Five is called Five because he called his father's bluff about the numbers, that he understood that they are meaningless and chose to adopt his number as a name rather than a rank. In the comics, there was a genuine power play between these two, and it'd be really fun if the show headed in that direction as well, I think it would be incredibly interesting to explore.

the cinematography really didn’t have to go as hard as it did in the moment where Five and Reginald are face to face for the first time in the show
something I really appreciate about the show is that it doesn’t shy away from drawing deliberate parallels between Five and the two definitely irredeemable characters, Reginald and the Handler. it shows so clearly how both of them influenced him deeply, how he is, essentially, a product of the abuse both of them inflicted on him independently, and serves as a constant reminder that Five is balancing on a knife’s edge, always just a slip away from not only being the worst version of himself, but also a genuinely despicable creature in being the perfect combination of Reginald and the Handler
How did Reginald figure out Klaus would come back from the dead? Did he just actually kill him? Did Klaus die on accident?
Reginald’s journal entry s1 e7
I noticed that no-one had posted about what the journal entry we see Harold flip to in s1 e7 so I thought I’d transcribe since I’m rewatching it anyway (no image soz since Netflix doesn’t allow screenshots)
0.04 Conjuring incident 06/16/01
I found that number four was simply not progressing in his abilities to conjure the non-living. He seems to not want to embrace this power. I sped up that ability tonight by locking him in the mausoleum overnight. Hypothetically he is seeing gore and death, but to be affective he must become desensitised to this.
Notes from incident
Klaus resistant
More fearful than I’ve ever seen him
Trying to squeeze himself through gated bars. Appears to be seeing if he has another super power he doesn’t know about.
0:36 Appears to have made first contact with dead spirits

Thanks to @fiyero3305 for filling in blanks!
finished yesterday and I have no words to explain what the fuck was that last season
you're laughing. The umbrella academy's final season destroyed every character's personal growth and semi-healed traumas, left huge plot-holes, completely abandoned some of it's most beloved side characters that were crucial in previous seasons and you're laugh-oh. You're crying. My bad. Go ahead. Let it out. Understandable.

Their father was so awful they really had a dance party the day of his funeral 💀
What I thought of TUA season 4
(Just my opinion pls no hate n if ppl wanna talk Abt it I would love to)
SPOILERS AHEAD
1. Victor FINALLY having it out on reggie
That was fucking amazing all those years of pent up exhaustion and aggression towards Reginald has finally come out and it was just beautiful to watch tbh
2. Ben and Jennifer
THIS HAD ME IM NGL I LOVED IT SO MUCH I love how through all the timelines there’s ALWAYS them, I was picking up on it throughout the season and it was just amazing, I loved that, I am a hopeless romantic so I was all there for it even tho it did destroy everything
3. Paralells
there were so many parallel’s throughout it from the previous seasons and just even the parallel of Jennifer knocking on the wall to Ben bro It just had me, I also love how the violin was still a theme throughout it through Abigail and the music during certain scenes, also having I think were alone now as the ending song was absolutely amazing although it was a different version/cover I loved that they used it in the first and last episode
4. PLOT TWISTS
BENS DEATH WAS CRAZY, had me and my best friend GASPING I’ve spent years theorising over how he died and I NEVER ONCE thought of Reginald being the case
ALSO ABIGAIL (reggies wife) ended up being on the opposite side which was insane. The way she also let lose on Reginald in the skin of gene was hilarious
5. Lila and Five
Just gonna say this first, I DIDNT LIKE IT. Even though as disgusting as it looks (due to fives body being younger) Lila and five makes sense as Lila said it was survival and they thought that they weren’t ever going to find a way back however five hiding the journal and way home from Lila just to have a relationship with her when she’s HIS BROTHERS WIFE is CRAZY I hate how they made him the bad guy in the end when it came to Lila and Diego and I did hate how they ruined Diego and Lila’s relationship for that :(
The fact they both genuinely fell in love tho is just crazy and tbh I never knew how to feel whenever it was on the screen however klaus, Allison and Luther were HILARIOUS at the confrontation scene.
6. TUA growing up!
Content of the kids FINALLY
IVE WAITING SO LONG FOR THERE TO BE MORE SCENES OF TUA AS KIDS ANS WE FINALLY GOT IT! I loved seeing them interact with each other and also showing that viktor wasn’t CONPLETELY alone growing up as he and Ben had a friendship, it also shows how klaus and Alison’s friendship has been deep rooted since they were young
7. Allison EATING
Allison was HORRIFIC in season 3 as we all know due to her crisis(?) but this season she was such a boss bitch and I actually lived for it icl the way she put reggie in his place and also helped klaus so much it was beautiful
8. The last episode!
The last episode was very Rick and Morty esq. but I loved it, it was so sad but so good and although it felt a bit rushed and I WISH they had more seasons coming they ended it off so well and with the 8 marigold flowers growing at the END END it was just beautiful and also kinda made me think like what if there is more? (Even tho there’s not :() also having all of the characters at the end such as the triplets from season 2, the commission workers, hazel and Agnes, the handler, grace, it was just all amazing and left me speechless
I actually can’t believe it over tho, they did so well with all of it and I love it so much.
Ofc this is all my opinion and I can’t wait to hear what other ppl think cuz honestly there’s so much to debrief and talk Abt it was also rly funny but honestly I loved it.
im feeling a very specific emotion that i have only felt in very specific situations for very specific people and it's extremely violent and graphic and pouring it into words isnt exactly what someone would call healthy
okay is how do you think be died i know everyone has the theory that the eldritch consumed him / turned on him or that he killed himself.
since in 2.10 it’s said he died on a mission i was trying to figure out how tf ben got caught slipping on that mission lol.
then i thought maybe it plays into the suicide thing that he allowed himself to get killed or maybe on the mission he allowed the eldritch to turn on him which is why allison was so passionate about rolling reginald “it wasn’t our faults” and luther saying they could’ve done more was saying they should’ve tried to help him/talk him out of it.
and people might think if he killed himself regunal might see that as a sign of weakness and wouldn’t have built a statue in his honor but maybe reginald didn’t know and the kids didn’t tell him because they didn’t want him to view ben as “weak”.
and maybe ben being scared to go into the light was him regretting it afterwards because he didn’t want to leave everyone and everything behind.
luther and diego fighting at reginalds funeral and diego full blown throwing a knife at luther is really a scene i just ignored bc that’s how normal it felt lol. and i look back it now i’m like omg?? they were so extra lmao.
SEASON 4 TUA SPOILERS
I have so much to say about s4 and I think I need a day or two to process what I've just watched but one thing I will talk about is the fact that the writers tried to pull a 'he's a different Hargreeves so he's nicer now' on us because we literally went through this in s3???
Like Reg trys the whole 'I'm not your father' thing on Klaus in s3 to manipulate him into being his little guinea pig and it only further proves that he's not capable of being a better father EVEN in different timelines. SO by that logic, why would s4 Hargreeves be any less manipulative? We see him say almost the same thing to Viktor while driving to find Ben and the whole time it felt so reused to me. I know this version has Abigail so that could be the reason why he's 'nicer' but I really hate the whole bit at the end where he sits and watches the cleanse happen because I feel like they wanted us (the audience) to feel bad for him in some way. AND the whole point of the end was that the siblings had to die because they were the problem when in reality Reginald was the one who gave them the Marigold and started all of this.
Question!
So I don’t know if any of the Hargreeves siblings ever changed their legal names from “Number ______” to their more “normal” names. Like I’m pretty sure that Allison, Vanya and Diego would definitely have changed theirs, Allison because she is an Actress, Vanya because she seems like the responsible one, and Diego because he wanted to be a police at one point so it kind of makes sense, right? Five and Ben were long gone by the time they would have been able to change their names, Klaus would be too high to care and Luther never left the Academy and when he did, he was on the moon.
Though my question is not about that. I was thinking about Five and how he never really wanted a “normal” name. So legally, the seven children were all “Number ______” when they were adopted, so that means that Five is legally “Number Five Hargreeves” does that mean that “Number” is his first name and “Five” his middle name?
It just makes me think (and laugh) that for 17/18 years, there was a huge house with: one chimpanzee, one robot, one alien and seven children named “Number”.
currently thinking about how klaus will *have* to get sober now that he doesn’t have his powers to magically bring him back to life when he overdoses or puts himself at risk while being drunk or high…
i imagine that after all the trauma he went through the urge to fall back into old habits must be massive, specially given he is -from my viewpoint- the most sensitive out of all the hargreeves siblings.
seeing ben alive once again, being forced to face his childhood trauma, getting betrayed by reginald and left to die alone in the apocalypse, luther being murdered… it’s a whole lot and he has to work through all those emotions alone, because the siblings have each parted their own ways once again.
now he doesn’t even have ghost!ben to be his voice of conscience in the face of chaos…
idk, i really hope they address klaus’ addictions next season and how everything that happened has impacted on him.
but most of all i really hope he gets a happy ending pls or i will cry thx

Allison Hargreeves - a vent
So this is just a vent
I was re-watching the Umbrella Academy season 3 and oh my dear god
I just saw the seventh episode and I want Allison to just drop dead and never come back up
and I get all those people saying they liked her in previous seasons, I get it guys I do. I did not. always knew there was something going on something was wrong she would snap. her allgood kind to everyone didn't seem right (I mean maybe you can call it trauma that I don't believe it when someone is nice but come on when a family is that fucked up just- okay) and she got 'everything' in her life that Viktor supposedly stole from her was not hers to begin with. She manipulated things to be her way. Not to mention she raped not one but two men - Patrick and Luther(currently ignoring the FACT that Luther is her brother but okay)
and her blaming Viktor for everything I just...
small detail Mrs. Chestnut you rumored him(then her) in forgetting he even had powers and to do that you were taken to the exact room he was locked in and you didn't tell anyone anything. Fine, you're daddy's little princess and didn't tell Viktor about rumouring him but after Reginald was dead? After everything started going to shit it didn't hit you like "Whoa hold on a minute our sister(brother) also has powers maybe that would help" no? If you had just use basic common sense on MULTIPLE occasions instead of manipulating your way out of them maybe just MAYBE you wouldn't have 'lost' everything
I really suggest going to read - https://www.reddit.com/r/UmbrellaAcademy/comments/vjl1lh/about_allisons_behavior_in_season_3_and_how_its/ on Reddit cause this just sums everything up. I wasn't on reddit until recently and god yes- i have found other people who realise exactly how Allison's character is since the beginning
Yo-
This only makes a little sense but what if
Klaus Hargreeves has the ability to talk to the dead right?? So what if he is dead?
Died like ages ago i know i know he can't but what if
And because his powers were talking to the dead but because now he himself is dead his powers like reversed and now despite being dead he can talk to the living
That would explain suddenly being able to channel other spirits through him you know-
