Poem: Burning
When I realized I loved you,
Your every motion stirred up
A commotion in my mind.
You sent my heart up in flames
That nearly choked me.
I couldn’t tell you
How you made me feel then,
How I was like a firework
Set off by you,
Barely able to contain myself,
About to burst apart in the sky.
How could anyone go on
Without that same level of chaos
After being aflame for so long?
How has anyone extinguished themselves
And been able to move on
From self-destructive love?
How did I get over you?
Your eyes were catalysts
To my combustion.
I simply had to remember
How wonderful life was
Before I was burning alive.

Poem: Song of Last Summer
When I would tune in to your station,
My BPM would shift to match your mood.
Some days I still hear the serene summer sound
Of your heartbeat in my memory,
Your sincere smile, reminiscent of sunshine,
A soothing vision in my sweetest dreams.
Sometimes I feel our hands brush past each other
In my nightmares,
Your fingers skimming mine for a moment
Before retreating, always too soon.
I watch you leave me
Again, every time,
Yet still, I love you in my mind –
Yet still, I love you
Like when your love was mine.

Poem: Curtains
From a balcony in the pale blue glow,
we stood, two small figures against
the vastness of the rest of the world,
taking in the soft colors of the sky
that continued to remind us of those
curtains we hung up together
that cast our worlds in heavenly hues,
highlighting the outlines of you and I
when they let in the afternoon sunlight,
as if fabric so thin could ever contain
or replicate the strength of feeling
in our hearts stained blue with sun-streaks,
painted a shade of navy blue as deep
and bold as my heart that overflows for you.

Poem: Tactless
Little is my love for you lately,
Knowing where you’ve been
And all that you’ve seen
Without a fraction of thought
For what it all might mean
When you recount it to me.

Poem: Breeze
Daydreams of you drift
Into my mind like the breeze
That rustles the curtains
As it welcomes itself in.
I have finally found peace
Enough to close the windows
And let my thoughts of you
Be whisked away by the wind.

Poem: Oatmeal
Holding your hands
Reminds me of having
Oatmeal with peanut
Butter for breakfast;
You are as warm as
The milky mixture,
As comforting as its
Smell, and as sweet
As the honey I stir in
To start my day with
A labor of love, and
Oh, how I do
Love you.

Poem: Dusk
Dusk was infinitely more appealing to
Me when I saw the darkness in your eyes
And knew that we were due for some
Sort of adventure, or maybe a few.
I wondered where we would wind up
If we wandered toward the shadow
Of the sun along the dimly lit horizon,
Where we had watched it fall away
And leave us longing for more time
In the day. If the sun would not take
Another moment to lighten up
Your gaze, I would chase it until
You laughed at the futility of making
Haste in such a pointless race. Dusk was
Infinitely more appealing to me when I
Saw the moon rise to reflect light back
From your eyes and knew that there was
No disguise in your sweet, honest smile.

Poem: Sounds Like Loving You
I strolled past a guitarist
On another date with you,
My dear, and felt a certain
Shiver down
my
spine,
as though
my soul was
Singing along to the silky,
Soothing tune of the soft
Strumming and the beauty
Of being in love with you.

Poem: Watching Paint Dry
She liked to think that you
Were looking for a love
Like hers, a love that
Badly serenaded you
In the car to the tune
Of your old radio, a love
That gave you chills
Because of how icy
Her hands always were,
A love that progressed
Too slowly for you, a love
That you compared to
Watching paint dry.

Poem: Lighthouse
You arrived like a welcomed breeze
On that scorching summer night,
Casting your lantern light over me
Like you were a lighthouse sending
A sign of home out to the lonely sea
And I was the sailor who had longed,
All along, for your light to illuminate
My life as you drew me back to shore.

Poem: Space Machine
Starry-eyed space machine, I’ve seen
You launch rockets right from your heart,
Sending them like fireworks into the dark.
I’ve watched your midnight eyes,
With their sparkles inside, mesmerize
A room like a full moon on a clear night.
Movie screen space machine, you have
An otherworldly opal sheen, yet you live for
Little things like old movies and worn blue jeans.

Poem: Sugar Sweet
Sugar sweet, my love,
You were meant to be the one
To set my fears asunder
And fill my heart with wonder.

Poem: Intertwined
We never went on an adventure,
But we figured that was fine,
Because our hearts were satisfied
By our fingers intertwined.

Poem: Chime
The chime above the door sings
As you come gliding through,
Bringing along the velvet breeze
Of the autumn winds outside.
Your hands cradle your cheeks
As your arms rest on the counter,
And your coffee breath wafts
To me like a whispered secret.
The chime above the door sings
As you float away through it,
My heartbeat carried on the wind
To you like a whispered secret.

Poem: Solo
She danced around the room,
looking people in the eyes
as she twirled past them,
never meeting the same gaze
twice. In the flashing lights,
spinning late into the night,
she was untouchable,
her tears dripping like sweat,
catching light like diamonds,
slipping, unseen, to the ground
as she kept gliding forward,
spinning late into the night.

Poem: Coffee Date
For once, I’d like to love you
in a typical way, weekends
with planned coffee dates
in picture-perfect cafes,
where the pink walls match
the rosy tint of my view
of you, leaning forward
from your pillowed rattan chair,
beige as the pastries we share
to indulge in the sweetness
of pastry scents filling the air
between us, the mood pink
and soft and pure like you
with those three packets
of sugar you always stir
into your lattes, welcomingly
warm like your laughter,
carried by the breeze as it floats
through the open windows,
gently welcomed by our lungs.

Poem: Little River Love
A Haiku
little river love,
we adore your flow while you
reflect skies above

I’m lonely and high and you’re probably out tonight. Probably with friends, who probably brought friends. And you probably find one attractive, who probably finds you attractive too. You’ll probably end the night together.
I want to be okay with probably. I want to wish the best for you, but that’s still me in my eyes. So I hope she has my eyes and hangs her a’s like I do. I hope her curves mimic my silhouette. I hope every joke she tells reminds you of my laugh. And I hope when she leaves, you wonder if I’m out tonight.
