Goretober Day 18: Plants/Hanahaki This has happened..even in the past? --------------------------------- Did I seriously make a *Prequel* (not Sequel) for the Stargazer drawing I made? Yes I did. I didn't know who to draw for this one, so I did a poll a week or two ago in a server and this character got the most votes, so here I am.
You can check out the Stargazer drawing here. www.deviantart.com/alterkun/ar…

"wait what!?" Allura stared, bewildered by her paladins.
"do you guys not get diseases?" Pidge asked, staring at her. Allura stuttered.
"we-well of course we do! But they're so rare and dangerous, outbreaks only happen every few thousand years!" Allura stated, making pidge rain an eyebrow.
"really? That's weird. We have thousands of disea-"
"thousands!?"
"-ses on Earth, but only a few are really classified as a plauge." Pidge declared.
"well, what cl-classifies as a plauge?" Allura asked, dumbfounded at how non-chalant pidge was
"oh, well, the most 'popular' or well known one is the black death, or bubonic plauge. It was cause by fleas that carried yersinia pestis. They would attach rats and mice, and then when the animal died, they would latch onto humans, evidentially spreading it all throughout the middle East." Pidge explained, leaving allura both shocked and confused.
"how did you know they had it?" She asked.
"oh, well it's called the bubonic plauge cause it would cause limphnodes to swell to sizes of what, chicken eggs?" Pidge pondered for a second. "I think that's it. Anyways, the limphnodes would swell, and other symptoms were fevers, chills, fatigue, headaches, and the grossest one, necrosis on fingers, toes, and noses." She stated.
"what's necrosis?" Allura asked, and pidge cringed.
"basically, necrosis is when the skin cells start..." She paused, thinking deeply. "Promise me you won't start screeching?" She looked at allura, who nodded I'm affirmation, curious as to why she needed to promise.
"okay. So basically, the skin cells start dying. You loose all feeling in them, and they start decaying completely, even if you're still alive." Allura looked horrified.
"WHAT THE-" she yelled, but pidge cut her off.
"yup. It's gross, but at least we can treat it now. When the black death happened, it killed a third of Europe. It got so bad that there were dead bodies just lying in the streets. There was no cure for it back then, and nobody knew what was causing it." Pidge said. "There are also less 'popular' ones than that one, like Taburculosis, which causes your skin to become pale, you're emaciated, and you cough up blood. Or Colera, a water faring disease which sucks up all the hydration in your system within 24 hours, leaving you so dehydrated you start dying very quickly, though it only occures when drinking extremely gross and dirty water-"
"WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FUCK!?"
Will Newman(Cole Sprouse) x Reader-Hey Neighbor!
So I thought it would be pretty cool to do a Will Newman imagine/oneshot because there aren’t that many out there. We need to make more for this character since he’s newer.
Descripton: Y/N transfers to St. Grace hospital due to her having XP(Xeroderma Pigmentosum) and turns out she’s Will’s next door neighbor.
Warnings: None

(Y/N)
I finally moved into my hospital room on September 14th, 2017 with my mother’s help of course. Looking around at my new room I’m glad to see that I have all my paintings, drawings, books, and electronics. My hospital bed consisted of (F/C) pillows and (S/F/C) blankets with (F/C) stripes making the room seem a little more vibrant.
Since my windows are tinted it makes my room seem gloomy so I have to have a couple lamps on at all times. “There finally all done with unpacking your stuff (Y/N),” I look over at my mom and smile, grateful that she helped me in the first place when I could have taken care of it myself. “thanks mom, what would I do without you,” I walk up to her and give her a hug, “You’d probably be so lonely.” I roll my eyes playfully and chuckle trying to be sarcastic, “Oh yeah mom, because I totally don’t have 4 other siblings that kept me company all the time.” She pulls away from the hug and playfully slaps my upper arm, “You shush your mouth.”
I laugh and put my arms up in a surrendering motion, “Okay, okay I give in,” before we could continue our fun a nurse walks in and smiles kindly at my mom and I. She had black curly hair that kind of turned into an afro, dark skin and brown eyes that seemed to sparkle at the sight of my room. “Hi, I’m Barb, and I’ll be the nurse that checks in on you from time to time and when more treatments are needed, I’m there to help.” I nod my head and smile at Barb, “Hi Barb, it’s nice to meet you I’m (Y/N), if you didn’t already know that. I can’t wait to settle in and get better if I can.”
." Barb smiles at me and then looks at my mom, “I promise you she is in safe hands here,” my mom smiles back at her, “Thank you.” Mom then turns to me and kisses my forehead, “Take care sweetheart, I promise I’ll come visit soon,” I nod my head as my response. “Okay, I love you,” before she walks out she turns back around, “I love you too.” After those words she left with me not knowing when I’d see her next. I turn towards the window of my room and remember it’s still dark out meaning I may be able to go out for a while.
“Umm Ms. Barb,” she was about to walk out of the room until I called her name, “Yes (Y/N)?” “May I go outside now? My mom usually lets me out when it’s dark and I have an alarm on my phone to make sure I come back on time before the suns up.” I look at her hopefully, hoping she’ll let me go out, “Of course you can sweetie, just if you’re late I’m going to set a curfew, do you understand?” I nod my head enthusiastically happy that I’m not going to be stuck in this hospital all the time. I hug Barb and jump up and down a little, “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” she chuckles and hug’s me back but pulls away after a couple seconds.
“Now go on before you run out of time,” I nod and walk out of my room feeling free until the smell of different medicines fill my nose. I ignore the smells knowing I’ll have to get used to them sometime soon and continue my way down the hallway into several different hallways to get outside. On my way out I look down a hallway and notice a pale young man, about 6’0 with short fluffy black hair and blue-green eyes. His clothes consisted of grey sweatpants and a loose white shirt that really brought out his eyes. After I wake myself up from my daze I notice he’s staring at me and he has a nasal cannula and it’s hooked to a small oxygen tank that’s in his satchel.
Immediately I began to become flustered by how cute he is and continue my way out the door not noticing that the boy followed me. “Hey, mystery girl,” I stop and turn to look at the raven-haired boy in curiosity, “Yes?” He smirks at me, “Were you just visiting someone?” I chuckle and shake my head, “Actually I’m a new resident here,” his smirk leaves his face and he smiles softly.
“Well since you’re staying a while I minus well introduce myself, my name’s Will, Will Newman,” I smile and nod my head, “My name’s (Y/N), (Y/N) (Y/L/N).” Will’s smirk returns, “That’s a beautiful name. So (Y/N) why are you leaving the hospital at almost 1 in the morning?” I look up at the night sky enjoying the sight of the stars, “Well, I wanted to take a walk and Barb said it was okay for me to do so, so here I am.” He nods and begins to walk back inside, “If you like you can join me,” he turns back to me with his breathtaking smirk, “Okay but be warned I’m highly dangerous.” He wiggles his eyebrows making me laugh, “Yeah you keep telling yourself that,” I turn away from him and begin walking down the road to a hill.

Should I do a part 2?
“Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.”
—Hippocrates
I finally got some “reasonable” photos of the plague doctor mask, and have posted it up on my Etsy here.
This sinister but highly capable healer is ready to bring your adventuring party back to fighting shape–for a price.
It’s my contribution to this year’s @magicmeatmarch, a sexy plague doctor! Inspired by the global viral pandemic, because that’s a perfectly reasonable sentence to write in the year 2020.
I designed the mask in the last couple weeks, and modified one of my codpiece designs to work with the red cross yesterday. The chaps and jacket I’d made over the last couple years for different outfits, but I thought they fit with this idea nicely.
Also, haha CORVID-19.
Whoops I forgot to post this plague doctor hood. I finished it up around the end of May, then it sold off of my Etsy while I was in media blackout.
This one has room for glasses to be worn underneath, clear acrylic lenses, ventilation through holes and grommets in the beak, and ear cups for comfort (no more squishing your ears when you lace up the hood!) with a bunch of holes for uninterrupted hearing.
I really like showing off the un-dyed color of the leather when using this sort of aesthetic. It’s got just a light application of oil to darken it slightly (this hide was very light tan to start), then it’s finished with a matte acrylic clear coat.
I’d made a similar plague doctor mask years ago (here) as one of my first big whole-head hood style masks, and this design built on a bunch of stuff I’ve learned since then. I went for a more visually coherent eye design; used rivets for the long seams to reduce the assembly time; and I tried out the ear cup idea, building on the deer head mask previously.
A black version of my plague doctor hood. (Previously.)
I went for a lustrous finish coat on this, with silvered lenses that block off all view of the inside. I tend to prefer matte finishes on light colored pieces, but black does look really nice when it’s shiny.
This hood has ear-cups for comfort (with holes for good hearing), ventilation holes on the underside and side of the beak, and enough room inside to wear glasses underneath!
Designed by myself, laser-cut out of 4 oz vegetable-tanned leather, then formed, dyed, finished, riveted and sewn together by hand. It’s available here.

ID above the cut this time! I took up a good amount of space talking about the inspiration and process for this one, and wanted to make the ID easier to get to, so no one needs to scroll through it if they don't want to.
[ID: A portrait of a moon elf, from Dungeons and Dragons, shown from the shoulders up, facing forward. Instead of having hair, five mushrooms of various sizes have sprouted from their skin, and a couple on their neck. They wear silver earrings, and their left ear has a small notch carved into it. Small beads of a dark, red liquid are scattered across their cheeks and right shoulder, and are concentrated on areas where red blotches have started to darken the pale skin. Their eyes are completely red, with the left eye containing a thin webbing that is also starting to form on the right. End ID]
CW for a discussion focused around mushrooms, fungal infections, death to said fungal infection, and undeath. There's also mention of tree parasites, starvation (after death), and colonization.
Really, anything under the cut is extra; you don't need to read it if you're not comfortable. Please stay safe! (:
Hi! Get ready for an essay, because while I was taking a break from drawing, I wasn't taking a break from thinking about drawing, and I have a lot of unorganized thoughts about this piece, not just about the design, but the fictional fugal infection that its depicting.
I got my Spotify wrapped playlist, and wasn't surprised when Lord Huron's "Not Dead Yet" was my most played song. After all, it's one of my favorites, often getting me in the mood to create, and the inspiration behind a concept I have for another new OC, an undead-ish ranch hand. (It's a work-in-progress.) So over the past few days I've been listening to that song on loop even more than usual, and it put me in the mood to look into some different zombie video games that I have no intention of ever playing. I noticed that the zombie apocalypses I was looking at were all focused on humans turning, and I couldn't remember anything about a zombie plague for any fantasy races. Thus, I decided to create a concept for one that effects the moon elves from Dungeons and Dragons.
I decided that the condition would be caused by a fungal infection. Partially inspired by how European colonizers brought illnesses to the Americas, I decided moon elves would first encounter it when trying to colonize land originally inhabited by wood elves. I know that is the opposite of how it happened with the colonizers, but I wanted to change it up a bit. The fungus wouldn't be a concern to the wood elves, as they already had time to adapt and build up a resistance. However, once brought back to moon elf settlements it would be able to run rampant.
As many already know, elves live for a long time. In this universe that I am apparently creating now, part of the reason for that is that all of them, not just wood elves, are similar to trees, slow growing, and able to survive even when most of its body has been damaged. In the case of trees, it means that when a parasite such as Dwarf Mistletoe* decides to use a tree as its host, a slow race begins. The tree needs to keep growing in order to have enough branches to obtain enough oxygen, while the mistletoe tries to use that oxygen for itself as it tries to take over the entire tree. In some cases, the parasite remains inside the host for a long stretch of time before sprouting to release seeds.
Something similar occurred with the infected moon elves.
After the moon elves' failure to take the land from the wood elves, they returned home, not knowing they were carrying the fungus. It took around fifty years before anyone noticed something was amiss. Infected elves began to die from an illness that weakened them over time and reddened their skin and clouded their eyes. From there, it becomes a standard zombie story: they start to rise from their graves, mindless and seeking out living targets.
The zombies themselves are fairly passive, only attacking if one around them is attacked first. In most cases, they simply wandered around they areas they had risen from, then following living elves. They did not go out of their way to feed, so many would eventually collapse once their bodies finally gave out, either due to starvation or decay.
The main threat comes from the mushrooms that sprout from their bodies. As the mushrooms matured, they released their spores, which then in turn infected the living around them.
The main design inspiration for this was the Bleeding Tooth Fungus, a type of mushroom that, as its name suggests, looks like a tooth with drops of blood on it. I decided that moon elves, with their pale, blue skin, would match the fungus the most after the infection sets in and red blotches start to form. The mushrooms sprouting from the body are not based on any particular species, just slightly inspired by the mushrooms on my Animate Dead sticker. The disk shapes are fun to shade and detail.
A large portion of the line art on the face and neck were done with the symmetry tool. To hopefully keep the piece from looking too balanced, and to distract from the mirrored lines, I purposefully shifted the mushrooms and details in the coloring to different heights on the face.
For the red markings, I experimented with a different combination of brushes that usual. In most cases, I use a simple opaque brush and add details with the flat marker, thin gouache, and g-pen brushes, but I decided to use one of the airbrushes to add some finer speckling.
The eyebrows are only there because I liked the shape I had made them, and I thought the cool color would add some contrast to the area around the eyes.
Thank you for reading this far! I normally don't post lots of writing like this, but if you're interested in reading some more of my world building ideas, check out my side blog, @tired-spider. I'm more active on this blog, but I a lot of my art and world building ideas there, along side some DnD stuff and headcannons for different media I'm invested in.
Critique is always welcome, and I hope you have a nice day!
* It should be noted that I first learned about this on a hike a few months ago. So while I think that this is the type of mistletoe I was told about originally, I'm not entirely sure.
Hanahaki disease
Heaving, The flutter in my lungs grows each time I inhale. Choking, It's enamouring flocculence rises up my throat as my face turns pale. Coughing, Its softness caresses the inside of my mouth as its scent infatuates my senses. Spluttering, It reveals its scarlet shade from the corner of my lips, prohibiting denial-filled sentences. Gagging, The clusters of sweetness drift forward, spilling themselves onto floor. Crying, The petals have made me breathless once more. Weeping, They could make the prettiest rose ever cited. Sobbing, But they'll never flow together, because this is Unrequited.
The raging crown of Summer,
Livid over maddened eyes-
The heady burn of dry air
Poised on the precipice
Of swallowing whole
Half the country in a blinking
and the other half in terror
of the too-green arms that strangle
Gentle blossoms in their beds.
All that, child’s play,
A matchbox world in idle hands
As they fiddle with the package
Fray the edges soft with age
And remember of an evening
When the sky is black with soot
The loam-dark halls beneath the earth
That welcomed his fury, and gave birth
To the fiery death of melancholy
As the smoldering fields of war
Swallowed the heads he piled
on the doorstep of Death
And the welcoming graves split the earth
As a lover welcomes
Her soldier home.
(He caresses her in the trenches,
Kisses her steel,
Breathes in her cyanide perfume
And laughs at the way the earthworks growl as he leaves their cold embrace.
Soon, love, soon,
And when I come to bed at last
I will grip you
As the roots of the hanging tree
Grip the veins of the earth,
And love you
As surely as the fire loves a witch,
As the sweet rotting contagion
Loves a warm bosom
In which to sleep
and strengthen anew.)
I know I've complained about this before but I'm still disgusted that men continue to spit on the sidewalk every day during a god damned pandemic. I actually avoid walking on the sidewalk by the boy's Catholic school down the street from my apartment because it's always completely coated in spit. Teach your sons some god damn basic hygiene like don't coat the sidewalk with your nasty saliva during a fucking pandemic. Actually don't cover the sidewalk with your nasty saliva ever because that's gross and I don't want to be tracking your gross saliva into my home, not ever but especially not during a pandemic.

Dear friends and supporters,
My name is Nada, and I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart and a sense of urgency.
Here in Gaza, there is a small tent standing alone in the corner of a refugee camp. Inside it, I sit with my young children, trying to protect them in every way possible and provide them with comfort and safety despite the hardships.
My children and I are now in great danger and need your help to evacuate from Gaza to safety. The situation worsens every day with limited access to drinking water, food, and medicine, along with facing the horrors of war.
The war has swept away our homes and dreams, and now we live in a tent, surrounded by hunger, fear, and diseases. My youngest son suffers from hepatitis due to pollution and lack of healthcare.
The days pass very slowly, and the situation deteriorates further each day. The need for food, medicine, water, shelter, and safety has become nearly impossible.
I have launched a fundraising campaign to facilitate our evacuation to Egypt and to start our lives anew. The ticket price to enter Egypt is $5,000 for each adult and $2,500 for children.
Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a significant difference in our lives and give us a chance for a brighter future. With your donation, you can be the light that illuminates our lives.
Please save my children; I do not want them to die in Gaza. If I cannot survive, please do not forget them. Protect them after I am gone.🙏🏼❤️
Nada's gofundme for her and her children is currently at around 40% of their goal - €6,364/€16,000.
Please boost her posts and donate if you are able to

The Unraveling Thread
Hello Hello, today’s six-sentence story is based on the word of the week, THREAD. I took this one a little metaphorically, with the idea of it being the thread of someone’s argument. It got weirdly preachy, and it is sort of a outsider POV of someone delivering an epic anti-vax rant. This is delivered from the POV of a pro-vax narrator, and if that isn’t your jam, I would ask that you please…
