Satan!Crowley’s (Mis)Adventures Raising the AntiChrist

I want to read a Good Omens fic where Crowley is Lucifer, and when he is “ordered” to take the baby AntiChrist (his son!) to the Satanic nuns to be switched with the Dowling baby…he. Doesn’t.

Lucifer rebelled against God so why would he do what She says he will? And furthermore why would he put his child. His creation. His heir into the hands of Humans? He knows what the humans are capable of. Besides, he started the whole rebelling thing. There would be no one better to teach his child how to be evil (he can also teach his boy how to see the beauty in the world—give him all the love Crowley thought had been burnt away in his fall. Show Her that throwing him away had been a mistake).

Crowley makes it appear that the switch went off without a hitch, but really all the new parents go off with their own babies. And then Crowley, Lucifer, Lord of Hell and all that. Has to figure out exactly how you raise a baby demon. Or Angel? Lucifer was an Angel but he fell. Demons are fallen angels. So is the baby an Angel? Because he hasn’t fallen? Unless Crowley’s evil was passed onto his child? That wouldn’t be fair though. The baby hasn’t done anything wrong and Crowley will go back to being Lucifer and he will tear Heaven and Hell apart before he lets them punish his son just for existing.

Hours later Crowley is raiding a bookstore trying to find a Manuel on how to raise a child without giving them massive amounts of trauma. He is also worrying himself sick because he doesn’t really remember his time in heaven and isn’t entirely sure if angels were ever babies or not.

Eventually he decides to drag Aziraphale into helping him without explaining a thing.

(God is just watching all of this and wondering if allowing Lucifer to spawn was really a good idea. It seems to be just making his issues worse. Maybe She should have done as the version of Her from a couple alternate timelines over did and gotten Lucifer into therapy.)

just. I want to read where a bumbling bibliophile Angel and the equally dumbass King-of-Hell-in-Hiding raise the AntiChrist. Complete with Crowley trying to not let Aziraphale know the truth because he’s certain the Angel will leave him. And Beelzebub who knows exactly where their idiot king is keeps dropping by and Crowley goes to increasingly extreme lengths to keep them from spilling the news to Aziraphale and Adam. also. Gabriel. Just, Gabriel.

And the Angel and Demon are having to deal with their two sides while also trying to keep the whole AntiChrist thing from Adam.

How Are You Repressed?

Pile 1: Perfectionism! The thief of progress and enjoying your work. You believe you shouldn't rest. You really can't see or believe that every small step counts when you are looking at, for all intents and purposes, a mountain. Take a breath. Try not to think of the end goal. Do the thing because it needs to be done, not because it is one step out of a thousand. The goal should be to move forward.

How Are You Repressed?

Pile 2: You are repressing positive or non stressing emotions following stressful events. It makes sense right? To be stressed about a stressful event. But worrying and being dramatic doesn't actually solve the problem. Feel what you need to, but don't sit there. Try being optimistic while moving through your emotions. Rest. You must be exhausted.

Pile 3: You are repressing your true self. There is a vicious cycle of being stuck and not fully accepting that you are the one who determines who you are and what is right for you. And what isn't. I hate to say this, but the coffee theory is inherently bad and completely undermines the entire season of progression we’ve been seeing with Aziraphale.

The coffee theory completely robs his decision of agency and accountability - it gives him an easy out and thus gives the next season an easy conclusion. And I’m sorry, but Neil just Would Not write that.

He wouldn’t make it so simple and easy and, I know this sounds harsh, POORLY WRITTEN.

Aziraphale has spent thousands of years desperately clinging to the idea that Heaven is inherently good, that serving Heaven as an Angel is inherently good. He’s spent thousands of years being gaslit and undermined and tricking himself into honestly believing that Heaven isn’t broken, it can still be fixed, the system still works if HE just helped it.

That’s all Metatron did. He dug those seeds back up. He put it back in Aziraphale’s head that it’s not Heaven who’s bad, it’s not the system that’s broken, it just needs someone better at the helm! Someone like Aziraphale!

The coffee didn’t brainwash him. The coffee was just a simple act of manipulation from someone who’s been doing the same thing for thousands of years.

‘I know you. I understand you. I’m proud of you. I want you to be the leader of Heaven. Here’s a coffee.’

And Aziraphale went with it. Because it’s all he’s ever known.

If the coffee theory is true, then all of this characterization is GONE. All of the tension and pain in his decision is GONE. Any hope of Aziraphale having a satisfying character arc in season three is GONE. Because if the coffee theory is true, then Aziraphale is Stuck. His character is trapped in a place with no room to grow, to learn, to change.

If the coffee theory is true, then Aziraphale won’t even be able to apologize to Crowley for making the wrong choice.

And that, as a potential culmination of their relationship, is SO fucking sad.

Aziraphale deserves better. Because he’s a complicated, flawed, and deeply traumatized person. And now he needs to make the wrong choice. He needs to make that wrong choice, and hurt the person he loves most, because that is the ONLY way he can grow. It is the ONLY way he can break free of the bonds that Heaven’s broken system have put on him. Like Gabriel did.

Aziraphale needs to have wanted that coffee.

Because without that, then no lessons are learned. No resolution is earned.

And Aziraphale AND Crowley deserve so much better than that.

I'm sure someone already pointed it out, but– I just can't get over the symbolism of the church scene in 1941. How the bomb shatters the church and kills the nazis and leaves Aziraphale and Crowley behind.

The bomb literally destroys the Good™ (the church obviously represents Heaven) and the Bad™ (we know that the nazis represent Hell because that's where we meet them again. Also, they're nazis) but it doesn't do any harm to Aziraphale and Crowley, therefore placing them with neither Good nor Bad but rather something in between.

And high-angle shot of the destroyed church. There is fire burning between the stones. Aziraphale looks around.

Look at them. The sacred ground is scattered around them, not even sacred anymore, since Crowley no longer is bothered by it. What once was to resemble the Evil is now buried beneath.

Aziraphale takes his hat from his head and holds it in his hands. In the right corner, Crowley leans against some stone and cleans is sunglasses.

But there is Aziraphale, who used a miracle to save not only himself but also Crowley. And there is Crowley, who used a miracle to save Aziraphale's books. Because they care for each other. Because they look out for each other. Because neither of them is solely good or bad, they are shades of grey.

Crowley pulls the bag out of a hand that sticks through the shattered bricks.

We even see Crowley pulling the bag out of the dead person's hand, which could be interpreted as an act of ultimate liberation from the past. After thousands of years of choosing between Heaven and Hell, Crowley chooses to save the books for Aziraphale.

Crowley gives the bag to the astonished Aziraphale.
Crowley leaves the frame, Aziraphale looks after him.

Even though this scene takes place years before they get cut loose from Heaven and Hell respectively, it already depicts Aziraphale and Crowley as independent from both, as their own team. It's the visual proof that they already are an us.

In the end, it all comes down to them. When Heaven and Hell lose their power, when there's little more than broken pieces left –

Aziraphale and Crowley still survive. Together.

Aziraphale, with the bag in his hand, still looking after Crowley in amazement.

Anyways, I'm going mad over here

After rewatching the Final Fifteen over and over again, I don't think Crowley wanted to kiss Aziraphale.

Look. I know we’ve all read a lot of different readings of ✨the kiss✨ and why it happened the way it did. It’s just that none of the posts I’ve seen so far captured exactly the feeling I was reading into the scene, so I thought I might as well share my interpretation. Because I don’t think Crowley wanted to kiss Aziraphale, actually. I mean of course he wanted to, but– let me explain.

I brought gifs and a little more heartbreak :)

First of all, I do agree with most of the interpretations going around. Crowley wanting to change Aziraphale's mind? Totally plausible. Wanting to show him what he’s losing? Probably. Taking the last chance he might get to finally kiss him? Yes, please!

What I mean when I say I don’t believe Crowley wanted to kiss Aziraphale are essentially two things, one of them being that Crowley didn’t plan on kissing him. He planned on leaving.

We know this because it’s exactly what he does.

The moment I come back to over and over again is when Crowley puts on his sunglasses and heads for the door.

Aziraphale is looking at Crowley, saying: "Oh, Crowley. Nothing lasts forever."
Crowley is slowly nodding, looking somewhere else before putting on his sunglasses. He says: "No. No, I don't suppose it does."

Look how close they are to each other. Usually, you would expect the kiss to happen in a moment like this. All it would take Crowley is to lean forward. If he wanted to kiss Aziraphale and change his mind, he would do it right there. But he doesn’t. He nods in a way that screams: Right. This is a losing game.

Aziraphale had just told him that nothing lasted forever (so why should he stay) and he already put back his wall of defense (the sunglasses). Of course, we can't tell for sure but everything in his appearance tells us that for him, the moment between them is gone. The only chance he had decided to take had slipped through his fingers. It is time to leave. So he does.

Crowley is walking past Aziraphale, saying: "Good luck."

Crowley does not stop until Aziraphale cries out his name and wants him to come back. He is not held back by his own desire but by his incapability to resist Aziraphale’s cry for help. Not that these things can’t be connected – but look at his body language, look how reluctant it seems, annoyed almost.

Crowley is stopping, turning back to Aziraphale. As said before, he is looking reluctant, almost annoyed.

It looks like he really doesn't want to stay. At the same time, he doesn’t want to hurt Aziraphale. He wants him to know that he cares. It’s not easy for him either. So he stays. Listens to what Aziraphale has to say.

Crowley takes a deep breath while looking out of the shop's window.

But it hurts even more. Crowley doesn't even bear to look at him. Aziraphale just doesn’t understand him, doesn’t understand the way Heaven works, even after all these years. At least, that’s what Crowley thinks. Everything that made the air around them vibrate, every nightingale that ever sang, is now dead silent. Crowley says so himself.

Crowley is pointing his finger upwards, saying: "That's the point." He is dropping his arm again. "No nightingales."

This is not him pathing the way for a kiss. This is him saying goodbye.

And then he says: “You idiot. We could have been –“

Maybe he doesn’t quite know what exactly he wants to say or maybe he does but he doesn’t know how.

“– us.”

Crowley looks desperate. He is saying: "We could have been ... us."

His voice is trembling. He lets the words linger in the room between them. Note how he is already speaking in the past tense. We could have been. But we’re not.

However, Crowley admits that the possibility of them being an Us was there, hence the possibility of everything that being an Us means to him. It drips from his toungue, every moment and every feeling he connects to the sense of being an Us. You have to remember the feeling to voice it, even when you do it to say goodbye.

And I think – we’re getting to the essence of this post – I think what happens is that Crowley gets overwhelmed by his own words, or rather: by grabbing his feelings and putting them into words, by the implication of them as an Us and everything he imagined it would have been for them. And what it means to lose it.

And I don’t think he consciously decides to kiss Aziraphale. I don’t think he wanted to kiss him in the sense that he didn’t want to take this step and actually do it. He had already lost.

(We could have been us but we’re not.)

They are still too far away from each other.

(We’re not. But we could have been.)

Eventually, Aziraphale averts his gaze, and turns his head to the side.

Aziraphale looks away from Crowley, presumably to hold back tears.

And this! This is the moment Crowley steps forward! Let me emphasize it once again because I do believe it’s crucial to Crowley's change of heart.

Aziraphale looks away. And Crowley snaps.

He snaps like a rubber band you pull at for too long, like the clip of a ballpoint pen cap you push too hard upside. It’s not a conscious decision. It’s a reflex. Like closing an app on your phone and opening it again directly after. Like someone calling your name and you turn your head in the direction of the voice. You don’t think about it. It just happens.

Crowley steps up to Aziraphale, grabs him by the collar and kisses him.

And I think Aziraphale looking away was the last straw that held the rubber band in place. The last thing that kept Crowley from falling once again. I genuinely don’t believe he would have kissed Aziraphale if the latter had continued to look at him. Too scary, right? Too real. Too close.

So this is the second thing I mean when I say that Crowley didn’t want to kiss Aziraphale. Of course, he wanted to but he didn’t make a deliberate decision. He just … gave in.

And when he pulls away, he knows that everything between them has changed. He waits for Aziraphale’s reaction, everything about him is tense.

Crowley is looking at Aziraphale. He is almost motionless, only breathing.

And if he dared to hope for anything at all, it surely wasn’t this.

Forgiveness.

Aziraphale is almost crying. He is saying: "I forgive you."

"I forgive you."

I forgive you for giving in.

Crowley is sighing, then turning away. "Don't bother."

Don't bother.

So Crowley does what he wanted to do in the first place – and leaves.

Crowley is leaving the bookshop.

He didn’t plan on kissing Aziraphale. He wanted to leave, maybe even to prevent this from happening. And when it happened, I don’t think it’s because of ulterior motives like changing Aziraphale’s mind or grabbing the opportunity as it presented itself to him.

I’m not saying these motives aren’t there – in fact, I pretty much believe so! I'm just saying that maybe he didn’t think about them when kissing Aziraphale and that he didn’t decide to kiss him because of that.

Maybe this is more than obvious to everyone else already and I'm stupidly rambling to myself. Also, I'm truly sorry if I overlooked another analysis of this.

I just don’t think there was time in Crowley’s head to reflect on any of his feelings.

I think he was just not holding back anymore.

Okay, at this point, I'm not even sure what to think of my own theories anymore and if this makes any sense AT ALL but WHAT IF

What if Aziraphale not only was very aware of how much the words “I forgive you” after the kiss would hurt Crowley but WANTED his words to hurt Crowley – to make it easier for both of them to leave.

Let me elaborate. Gifs inclusive!

I was just listening to the song “Hot Mess” by dodie and one part of the chorus especially struck me:

Make it ugly, put on a show Hack it that I hate you so that I can let go

Essentially, it’s about how the narrative voice of the song is trying to hate their partner in order to let them go. The idea behind this is that if the breakup is worse than it needs to be – i.e. if one person is being tricked into hating the other person – it’s easier for them to stop loving them.

What if Aziraphale is doing this to his relationship with Crowley?

We know (thanks to Rob Wilkins) that, after the kiss, Aziraphale is trying to comprehend what's happening and that he wants Crowley to do it again.

But he doesn't say any of that.

Aziraphale after the kiss. He is avoiding Crowley's gaze, breathing shakily and searching for words. He starts with: "I..."

In this 10-second-long eternity after the kiss, Aziraphale is clearly struggling for words. He is not even looking at Crowley but focused on an undefined point in front of him as if he can't bear to meet his gaze just yet. He is completely overwhelmed.

Aziraphale is still breathing shakily. As he looks up to Crowley, he takes a deep breath.

When he dares to look up, he takes one deep breath. Of course, we can only speculate what is going through his mind. For the sake of this meta, I'm going to propose the theory that at this moment, Aziraphale realizes how hopeless their situation actually is.

Their love for each other is undeniable. Both of them said that they wanted to be together, even if they used different words to describe their desire. But while Crowley wants to fight their battle against Armageddon from the outside, Aziraphale wants to change Heaven's system from the inside. And behind these approaches lie such deep-rooted beliefs about, well, everything, that they pose an obstacle they can't overcome. Not yet. Not through running off together. Not even if their love is 6000 years deep. It's the epitome of tragedy, really.

Aziraphale knows this. He knows that in this situation, this will only hurt more the further they go. So he takes a deep breath. And he decides to do the excruciating thing neither of them wants to do but that needs to be done:

He ends it.

Aziraphale says: "I forgive you."

Aziraphale knows about the harmfulness of his words – these specific words of all the things he could have said or done. Even as he is saying them, he looks as if it physically hurts him to do so. His eyes seem to be full of pain, maybe even regret. But how else will he convince Crowley to do what he can't, how else will he make him let go?

Aziraphale looks after Crowley, breathing heavily, on the verge of tears. Eventually, he looks down.

When Crowley leaves, Aziraphale doesn't attempt to stop him again. No matter how plainly this breaks his heart, no matter how he's barely holding himself together. He lets him go.

In German, there is a saying that could literally be translated to: It's better to have an end with terror than to have terror without an end (Besser ein Ende mit Schrecken als ein Schrecken ohne Ende). I think it fits this particular reading of the scene quite well. In Aziraphale's mind, their relationship would result in such agony that they would hurt even more. By ending their relationship before it has even begun, he is trying to protect both of them – making the pain great but definite instead of ongoing.

Does that sound plausible to anyone?

I myself am still quite unsure how to feel about this interpretation of Aziraphale's reaction, so I would love to hear some thoughts on it! <3

What we know + a little speculation - eccles cakes, Gabriel, and Crowley's anger

Okay so with the past two teasers, a lot is put into context. I've finally sat down to put it all down for anyone that would like it, and a little spec on what could be related to the scenes we have, I'll be going in chronological order. I'm listening to Crowley's playlist as I write this so I'm going a little insane.

Okay first off we got a new teaser here, where we see their little coffee date happening, but the interesting thing to note here is that Crowley comes into this scene already pissed. Aziraphale is taking Nina's suggestion, eccles cakes, in hopes to calm Crowley.

What We Know + A Little Speculation - Eccles Cakes, Gabriel, And Crowley's Anger
What We Know + A Little Speculation - Eccles Cakes, Gabriel, And Crowley's Anger
What We Know + A Little Speculation - Eccles Cakes, Gabriel, And Crowley's Anger

So then Nina, darling Nina, asks about the NAKED MAN IN AZIRAPHALE'S SHOP and Crowley's very interested in this. Crowley doesn't know about Gabriel at this point, Aziraphale (probably) is taking this time to figure out how to tell Crowley Gabe's crashing at the bookshop, that he's even here on Earth at all. Nina's forced his hand, he's got to explain himself, I mean did you see the guilt in his face?

What We Know + A Little Speculation - Eccles Cakes, Gabriel, And Crowley's Anger
What We Know + A Little Speculation - Eccles Cakes, Gabriel, And Crowley's Anger

So it's safe to assume Aziraphale needs to show him, an explanation is a matter of great importance, they take those place of cakes to go (I imagine Aziraphale very sincerely promised to bring the plate back, washed and in perfect condition post haste) and we get, well, you know, the best discovery of my life. Original eccles post here.

What We Know + A Little Speculation - Eccles Cakes, Gabriel, And Crowley's Anger

So we all know what happens next.

What We Know + A Little Speculation - Eccles Cakes, Gabriel, And Crowley's Anger

SOME SPECULATION NOW

Okay now that that's established, I think the newest little teaser here, aside from sending me into a tailspin, comes pretty soon if not immediately after Crowley finds out about Gabriel. It makes sense, does it not? Gabriel introduces his presence, Crowley says, "A word, Angel. In private," or something of the like and they go upstairs and Crowley says he's gotta get the fuck out. It all fits.

Now my favorite little bit of spec about this whole thing is the scene where Crowley has his lighting outburst. He's pissed, to a degree we've never seen before. Angry enough to fucking smoke and summon lightning. Armageddon didn't even piss him off that bad. I think what could bring him to this level is someone messing with that fragile peace he's they've carved out for themselves, possibly. That makes a lot of sense if this outburst is after the discussion where Crowley says Gabriel's gotta go. Maybe they did have a little spat, didn't resolve it immediately, Crowley left and is so pissed that, well.

What We Know + A Little Speculation - Eccles Cakes, Gabriel, And Crowley's Anger

Boom.

The other option for this fitting into this bit with the cakes and Gabriel is if this happens before the coffee shop date. If that's the case, it explains why he's so damn angry. Maybe something with Hell, his car (he is living out of it), I don't know, but if this is the case then he has the outburst, maybe Aziraphale notices, comes out in a rush and takes Crowley into the shop to calm down? Does Crowley try to suggest they go into the bookshop but Aziraphale says no, takes him to the coffee shop? But oh, Nina forces the Gabriel reveal.

I really go back and forth on before or after, the scene looks right for the other ones as far as it could be the same day, continuity and all that. I could be totally wrong, this could come later, but I don't think so. But who knows.

Wait and see I guess.

Hi people, I don't usually post my thoughts online, but I REALLY have to post this one because I haven't seen anyone talk about it (yet) and I wanted to know what y'all think.

So, I've been thinking about Good Omens (a lot) and realized that, in season 2, Gabriel knew about the second armageddon and the Metatron's plan, but he never told anyone about it. Aziraphale didn't know about it until he accepted the job as an archangel and the Metatron told him, and, since he had kinda argued with Crowley and was still angry, he wasn't gonna quit the job he got. BUT what if he had already been warned about the plan? What if Gabriel told Aziraphale and Crowley about it before he got away from Earth with Beelzebub? But most importantly: WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T HE WARN THEM?! THAT COULD HAVE PREVENTED THE WHOLE FIGHT/ARGUING SCENE. 😭😭😭

Aziraphale complimenting Crowley's work during The Begging

Aziraphale's attempt to put his hand on Crowley's shoulder during the kiss because he wanted them to be closer to each other

Aziraphale has a diary with a description of his every meeting with Crowley (as i suppose)

"But you like waiting inside"

How literally every character made a remark about their relationship being a little bit more than just friendship and how they're flustered by those comments

"I am, but rescuing me makes him so happy"
