Fandom Problems - Tumblr Posts - Page 2
something I hate about fandom culture is the idea that there are newer, less committed, less valuable fans. Let me explain that. When someone acts like because they were a fan of a tv show from the beginning, or read a book series as it was being published, therefore, they are a better fan, or more valuable somehow. I see it mostly in young fans, but the "I'm the biggest fan" "I was an OG fan" "I've been here since the beginning" kind of gatekeeping behavior is a huge problem for me.
Part of it for me is how fandoms are about coming together over something we have in common, but to make a hierarchy within the fandom means that a lot of people are alienated. I was thinking about this recently because when Harry Potter was new, I hadn't been born. When The Hunger Games was new, I was really really young. But in the past year, I've been reading both. And I've noticed that I feel like an imposter, like I'm not a real fan, because I didn't read them when they were new. As if because I'm not an early fan, I might as well not be a fan at all. And I hate that feeling for me and everyone else.
In the meantime, that's a plus with reading older literature, watching older movies, etc. the chances that someone will "OG fan" you are much lower.
My least favorite thing about multiple pov books, is how the author inevitably tries to switch povs consistently but there are always those parts where one pov is full of action and really interesting and the other (s) is soooo boring in comparison. And I have to force myself to not skip the boring povs temporarily, and I hate it

joining a series fandom after the majority of it has been released sucks because you don't get to live theories and reactions and you risk spoilers, but it's also really nice because you don't have to worry so much about cliffhangers. You can go straight into the next book or season or movie without thinking about it for a year
This is a bit unrelated and I'm sorry to derail your post, but this feeling is so valid and I want to talk about it.
I can't say how many times my opinion of a piece of media or character or ship shifted negatively due to the fans. As a preteen/early teen, I read all of the Keeper of the Lost Cities books, I was on that side of Pinterest and I was on fandom, but I got so so tired of the fans that I dropped it altogether. The fans were so aggressive with their opinions I started getting anxious every time I looked at anything related to the fandom. And that's not an uncommon experience, for me or for fandoms. So many fandoms have this problem, where fans get so caught up in their opinions they refuse to participate in friendly dialogue and instead opt to get aggressive and insulting. And personally, I'm sick of it. I avoid most fandoms now. I don't join fandoms, I just consume the media privately and don't engage. And though there's nothing wrong with not being involved in a fandom, I think it's terrible that anyone should be made to feel as though they can't join in or that there is some kind of risk involved with participating in a fandom and having an opinion of their own about any given part of it.
If fandoms are communities that come together over shared enjoyment of a piece of media, why are people being mistreated, insulted, and made to feel unwelcome?
The Percabeth community SUCKS
Okay, I’m going to share something about this. The Percabeth fans suck.. especially when I post stuff that isn’t related to the ship. Anytime I talk about even something else, they unfollow me or block me. I posted a Valgrace piece and they unfollowed me. It makes me so mad considering I always have to talk about and share Percabeth art. I really wish I didn’t actually start drawing Percabeth because that ship is so overrated and overused. I do love it but I hate the fans of the ship.. I can’t even do anything. I can’t talk about my ocs or other ships.. it always has to be Percabeth this and Percabeth that.. Percabeth Percabeth Percabeth Percabeth Percabeth Percabeth Percabeth.
In some fandoms, every fic has to be a fix it fic
TikTokers are such pussies when it comes to ships. “B-but they’re not canon 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😖😖” honey back in my day we shipped characters from entirely different medias uphill both ways in the snow
listen.
when I look up headcanons for characters.
I do not want. A whole x reader fanfiction (spicy) or something. THATS A FANFIC. NOT A LIST OF SILLY LITTLE CHARACTER HEADCANONS.
I don’t need ship headcanons either but those are unavoidable no matter what.
Friendly reminder that being rude to someone because you disagree with their headcanons, ships, or really how they enjoy a fandom at all is not okay.
If they are not actively being harmful, it’s not your place to judge.
And yes, I mean actually harmful. Omegaverse, littlespace, etc. are not harmful.
Just putting it out there that my blog name contains the word “lurker” for a reason. Even though I post more than I thought I would when I created this I’m not changing it. Most of my posts are to do with Catholicism or whatever is on my mind, however I am interested in many different fandoms, TTTE in particular. I’ll occasionally repost some things to do with fandom but I’m choosing to keep that to a minimum. The fandom world has some great people but it’s also filled with many horrible people. I’ve experienced more toxicity than I expected from being in fandoms long before I even decided to join tumblr. I’m not calling anyone out so don’t fret about that, I’m just explaining why I’m called “the-polite-lurker” and not something else. Anyway, rant over and God Bless!

I'm gonna say it.
It's unhinged to assume that someone's taste in fiction equates to what they believe is moral or good, or is something they want to see or experience in real life.
That is a bonkers assumption to make.
I'm tired of humoring people with long arguments about it when the simple fact is it is a totally fucking absurd reach to accuse someone who enjoys something in fiction of being in favor of it in real life.
I'm tired of pretending like this is a legitimate position to hold-- that they should be afraid of fiction's dire influence on a reader's moral decay or that it's a sign of what the author secretly wants for realsies in real life.
Same here 😩
Some side effects I hate are the authors changing the original script just to accommodate the incoherent requests of rabid "fans" whose noise could cancel out the swifties at an Eras tour concert (love y'all swifties ✨), thus ruining the entire plot of a story
AAAAND speaking of books here, the fact that supposedly mature books now have the reading level of a 6 y/o, just because they have to appeal to a mass-mainstream "fandom" that just pics up books for aesthetic and because it's "cool and edgy".
I know the genie is out of the bottle and you can't go back but dear GOD I hate the mainstreamification of fandom so much
I do NOT want authors or showrunners or actors to acknowledge us or talk about fanfic or fanart or fan theories! I do NOT want people asking questions of the canon creators and getting them answered (make up your own answers, like god intended!) I do NOT want companies making jokey advertisements aimed toward fandom!
I know that fandom was never entirely underground but like... I miss that fourth wall existing, you know?
YoU oNlY liKe zUtaRa cAuSe zuKo iS HotTer tHan aAng 🙄🙄🙄
Not to quote literal Jesus... but "you said that".
Plus, man he's a firebender, he's literally hotter than anyone, he can set himself on fire. Lol.
“I think Zuko and Katara would’ve made a cute couple”
normal person irl: oh yeah, now that you mention it I can see it
ATLA fan online: Zutara fans are DELUSIONAL and so ANNOYING. There is NOTHING in the entire show that indicates anything romantic whatsoever. EVERYONE hates Zutara. Katara would never get with her colonizer and Zuko loves MAI. Katara and Aang are SOULMATES. You just like Zutara because they look good together. Well joke’s on you because Aang got Katara pregnant THREE TIMES —
I wanna contribute to fandom/s, but I don't wanna be involved with fandom/s, do you see my problem?
self-gatekeeping, where I'm like 'I haven't been into this long enough/haven't seen all of this/don't know the people behind this -what if it's actually problematic', so I refuse to wear merch, or show fanart
also a moment of silence for female characters who get a lot of shit but would be adored if they were male
It's 5:30 in the morning and all I can think about is "Where the hell is Chuck?!".
best kind of writing is the kind that's like 'we didn't think about the implications of any of this, and surprise! we created nuanced characters and complex worldbuilding'
Check this out!
Hey peeps!
So I wanted to know what fandoms are y'all in. So here's a google form for it. If the fandom's something I'm not in, I'll try to get in.
So I hope y'all fill it up then we'll talk about it everyday :)
